Measure the case as it will travel, then verify the operating airline’s allowance for your exact fare and route. Record the greatest outside height, width and depth, including wheels and handles whenever the carrier’s definition includes them. Add those three numbers when the policy uses total linear dimensions, and compare the packed case with the airline’s weight limit. Finally, check which airline operates each flight, because a codeshare can put a different baggage policy in force.

The three checks that prevent most hard-case baggage surprises

  1. Exterior size: measure the case’s greatest outside height, width and depth, with every required protrusion included.
  2. Total linear dimensions: add height + width + depth when the airline or industry guidance uses a linear-dimension limit.
  3. Allowance and weight: confirm the ticket’s included pieces, maximum weight, oversize rules and applicable fees for the actual operating carrier.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says baggage restrictions can vary by airline, type of travel, and origin or destination. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) describes 158 cm (62 in) as a common checked-baggage reference where the piece concept applies, but also says allowances and conditions remain airline-specific. Treat 158 cm as a starting point for checking a rule, not as permission to travel without verifying it.

What “outside dimensions” means for a hard case

Measure the case in its travel configuration

Airlines generally care about the space the case occupies, not the dimensions printed for the empty shell. Close and latch the case, install removable wheels or handles that you intend to use, and position telescoping handles as the carrier’s instructions require. Do not measure only the rigid shell if wheels, feet, corner guards or fixed handles extend beyond it.

Use the three largest perpendicular measurements:

  • Height: the greatest vertical distance from the lowest point to the highest point.
  • Width: the greatest side-to-side distance, including a side handle or other fixed projection when required.
  • Depth (also called length by some carriers): the greatest front-to-back distance, including wheels, latches or protective features that stick out.

ANA’s cited U.S. checked-baggage guidance and Air Canada’s checked-baggage guidance both describe greatest outside measurements and include wheels and handles in the stated dimensions. Their wording illustrates why a manufacturer’s shell-only specification can understate the airline measurement.

Good sewing tool, accurate tape measuring for sewing, tailoring, body, waist measurement or measuring any curved surface. can provide you accurate measurements, suitable for a seamstress, a crafter, a quilter or whoever just need a flexible measuring tape

Why the largest point matters

A case can taper, curve or have a raised lid. Measure the widest point in each direction rather than taking a measurement near the center. For a molded equipment case, place the tape against the extreme edges of the shell, then repeat with the case rotated if necessary. Record the largest result for each axis.

If a component can be removed before check-in, decide whether it will actually be removed. A detachable wheel kit that stays at home does not belong in the travel measurement; a wheel kit attached for the airport does. When the policy is ambiguous, use the larger measurement and ask the airline for a written interpretation before departure.

How to measure a hard case accurately

Prepare the case and a simple record

You need a flexible tape measure, a flat floor, a straightedge or ruler for awkward corners, and a note or spreadsheet. A second person makes it easier to hold the tape level, but is not essential. A flexible tape is a convenience, not an airline requirement.

  1. Empty the case enough to close it normally. Bulging contents can change the outside size.
  2. Fit the wheels, feet, handles and protective accessories that will travel with it.
  3. Set the case on a flat surface in the orientation used for transport.
  4. Measure the greatest height, width and depth. Keep the tape straight; do not follow a curved shell.
  5. Repeat each measurement from the opposite side and write down the larger reading.
  6. Photograph the tape positioned at each extreme if the case is close to a limit. The images create a dated record of how you measured it.
  7. Weigh the closed, packed case and record the result in the unit used by the airline.

Label the record with the case model, date, packed contents and whether wheels and handles were installed. If you later change the contents or remove an accessory, recheck both size and weight rather than relying on the old note.

Handling irregular or oversize gear

For a long instrument, tripod, lighting stand or other non-rectangular item, use the smallest imaginary rectangular box that fully encloses the packed item. Measure the box’s maximum height, width and depth. Soft covers that compress under normal handling may be treated differently by a carrier, but do not assume compression will be accepted; ask the operating airline when the item is close to a threshold.

Separate pieces packed inside one hard case still count toward the case’s outside dimensions. A lid that closes only when the contents are rearranged should be measured after that final arrangement, not while the case is empty.

Calculating total linear dimensions

The formula

When a rule says “total linear dimensions” or “length + width + height,” add the three outside measurements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

total linear dimensions = height + width + depth

For example, a case measuring 70 cm × 45 cm × 30 cm has total linear dimensions of 145 cm. A case measuring 75 cm × 50 cm × 35 cm totals 160 cm, which is above the 158 cm (62 in) reference used in IATA guidance. The arithmetic does not decide acceptance by itself; the fare, route and airline policy still do.

Convert units without rounding away a violation

Airlines may publish inches, centimetres or both. Convert before comparing:

  • 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres
  • inches = centimetres ÷ 2.54
  • centimetres = inches × 2.54

Keep at least one decimal place during conversion and round only for display. A measurement that appears to be exactly 62 inches after aggressive rounding can exceed 158 cm in the airline’s centimetre calculation. If the case is close to a limit, leave a margin rather than treating a borderline number as compliant.

Check packed weight separately from size

Size and weight are independent tests. A case can fit the linear-dimension rule and still incur a heavy-bag charge, or be light enough while exceeding an oversize limit. Weigh the case after packing the actual gear, cables, batteries, locks and accessories that will be checked.

Reliable home weighing methods

  • Use a luggage scale by lifting the case as instructed by the scale manufacturer.
  • With a household scale, weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the case; subtract the first reading from the second.
  • Repeat the reading after moving the case and use the higher stable result.

Record the unit and leave room for last-minute additions. If the airline limit is stated in pounds, do not assume a kilogram conversion will be rounded in your favor. JetBlue’s cited checked-bag policy, for example, lists 50 lb alongside its standard 62 in overall-dimension limit; those are two separate thresholds in that policy.

Read the baggage allowance for the exact itinerary

Start with the booking, not a generic search result

Open the reservation or e-ticket and identify:

  • the number of checked pieces included in the fare;
  • the maximum weight per piece;
  • the maximum dimensions or linear-dimension rule;
  • the route, connection points and travel dates;
  • any listed oversize, overweight or additional-piece charges.

Fare families can have different free allowances on the same aircraft. ANA’s cited U.S. page notes that the free allowance varies by fare. A case that is accepted under one ticket may cost extra under another, even when the physical flight is identical.

Identify the operating carrier

Look for wording such as “operated by” on every flight segment. A ticket sold by one airline can include a flight operated by another. ANA specifically notes that another airline’s rules may apply when an itinerary contains a flight operated by another airline. For a connection, verify the policy that governs each relevant segment and ask which carrier controls baggage charges at check-in.

Do not assume the first airline’s allowance carries through the whole journey. The answer can depend on the itinerary construction, ticketing arrangements and the carrier operating the segment. Save the policy page or written response you relied on, including the access date, so you can show the same information if a question arises at the airport.

Check for oversize and excess-baggage categories

Policies commonly separate standard checked bags from oversize, overweight and extra pieces. Read all three sections. A case can be accepted only after a fee, routed through a special counter, or refused when it exceeds the carrier’s maximum—even if it is below the maximum weight.

Air Canada’s cited checked-baggage page lists an oversized maximum of 292 cm (115 in), measured using greatest outside height, width and length including wheels and handles. That is an Air Canada policy detail, not a general industry ceiling. JetBlue’s cited page presents a standard 62 in overall-dimension and 50 lb limit and a separate oversized-dimension range; consult its current policy for the applicable range and charges rather than transferring another airline’s numbers.

Reference figures—and how not to overgeneralize them

Source or carrier Published rule or reference How to use it
IATA 158 cm (62 in) total linear dimensions is described as a common checked-baggage maximum where the piece concept applies. Use as a comparison reference only; IATA says allowances and conditions remain airline-specific.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) 62 in (158 cm) total linear dimensions on the cited U.S. checked-baggage page, including wheels and handle. Apply only to the relevant ANA policy and itinerary; the page also says free allowance varies by fare and another airline’s rules may apply.
JetBlue Standard checked bags should not exceed 62 in overall dimensions or 50 lb on the cited policy page. Check the live JetBlue page for its current oversize range, fees and itinerary conditions.
Air Canada Oversized maximum listed as 292 cm (115 in), using greatest outside height, width and length including wheels and handles. It is an Air Canada maximum, not a universal allowance for other carriers.

These figures are policy thresholds and an industry reference, not results from a statistical study. The pages were accessed in 2026; policies can change, so confirm them again before each trip.

A practical decision framework for your case

Case 1: comfortably below the published limit

Keep the measurement record, confirm the packed weight and verify the included piece count. Recheck if you add equipment or change the fare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Case 2: close to the limit

Measure again with the case fully equipped, include all protrusions, avoid rounding down and contact the operating carrier. Ask whether the published number includes wheels and handles, whether the limit is per piece, and what happens when a measurement is one or two centimetres over.

Case 3: above the standard limit but below an oversize maximum

Find the carrier’s oversize fee, acceptance conditions, payment timing and drop-off location. Some airports require a special-baggage counter. Obtain confirmation that the particular route accepts the size; an oversize maximum on a general page does not guarantee acceptance on every fare or aircraft.

Case 4: above the carrier’s maximum

Do not arrive hoping an agent will waive the rule. Reduce the case size, split the equipment into permitted pieces, ship it separately, or choose a service that explicitly accepts the dimensions. Recalculate every resulting piece.

Common measurement and policy mistakes

Measuring only the shell

Symptom: the manufacturer’s dimensions fit, but the check-in measurement is larger.
Fix: measure the greatest outside dimensions with wheels, handles and fixed hardware installed.

Adding the wrong sides

Symptom: a single long side is compared with a linear-dimension limit.
Fix: add all three outside measurements and preserve the units.

Confusing allowance with acceptance

Symptom: the case is within the size limit but the fare includes no checked piece.
Fix: check the ticket’s included pieces and charges separately from dimensions.

Checking the marketing airline only

Symptom: the booking confirmation shows one airline, while the flight is operated by another.
Fix: identify the operating carrier for each segment and verify the applicable rule.

Using an old policy page

Symptom: a saved limit or fee differs from the current booking screen.
Fix: recheck the carrier’s current baggage page and reservation details close to departure, and retain the date of the information used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the return journey

Symptom: the outbound allowance works but the return itinerary has a different carrier, fare or route.
Fix: run the same size, weight and allowance checks for the return segments.

What to do at the airport

  1. Keep the case closed and packed exactly as measured.
  2. Have the booking, operating-carrier details and saved baggage policy available.
  3. Declare oversize or overweight status before the agent completes the bag tag.
  4. Pay any required fee through the channel the carrier specifies.
  5. Follow signs for special or oversized baggage if directed; do not leave the case at a standard belt without confirmation.
  6. After tagging, verify the destination tag and retain the baggage receipt.

If an agent gives a different interpretation from the written policy, ask for the specific rule or supervisor review before surrendering the case. A written confirmation obtained before travel is stronger than an informal assumption made at the airport.

Choosing or modifying a hard case for future trips

Compare cases by published exterior height, width and depth—not shell-only interior capacity. Calculate each candidate’s total linear dimensions, then compare the packed weight of the case plus gear with the intended carrier’s limit. Leave clearance for measurement variation, replacement wheels or protective covers.

  • Prefer a case whose measured outside dimensions are below the limit without relying on a removable part that you may forget to remove.
  • Check whether wheels and handles are included in the manufacturer’s stated dimensions.
  • Account for the empty case’s weight before choosing heavy locks, dividers or foam.
  • Use the strictest allowance among the carriers and fares you realistically expect to use.
  • Re-measure after repairs or modifications that add hardware.

The right case is the one whose real, packed exterior and weight fit the specific itinerary—not simply one advertised as “airline compatible.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final pre-departure checklist

  • ☐ Height, width and depth measured at their greatest outside points.
  • ☐ Wheels, handles and fixed protrusions included according to the carrier’s wording.
  • ☐ Linear dimensions calculated as height + width + depth, in the carrier’s units.
  • ☐ Packed weight measured, with a margin below the limit.
  • ☐ Included checked pieces and fare allowance confirmed.
  • ☐ Standard, oversize, overweight and extra-piece rules reviewed.
  • ☐ Operating carrier identified for every segment, including codeshares.
  • ☐ Outbound and return itineraries checked separately when they differ.
  • ☐ Current policy details and any written approval saved for the travel day.

Measuring the complete case and matching those numbers to the exact operating carrier removes the guesswork. The 158 cm (62 in) figure is a useful reference, but only the airline’s current rule for your fare and itinerary determines whether the case travels as standard baggage, incurs an oversize charge, or cannot be accepted.
