There is no universal FPS increase for a GPU driver update. A credible answer comes from a controlled before-and-after experiment: hold the game, scene, settings, operating-system state and capture method constant; repeat the same run several times; save raw frame-time logs; and compare averages or medians alongside low-percentile and displayed-frame results. If the direction does not repeat, or frame pacing and displayed timing worsen, the update has not produced a clean performance win even if the headline average is higher.
What a driver benchmark can—and cannot—tell you
A graphics driver can change shader compilation, scheduling, synchronization, power behavior, compatibility and workload-specific optimizations. The result therefore depends on the exact GPU, driver pair, game build, graphics API, scene and settings. A result from one title is not a promise for another, and an official source does not publish one FPS-gain percentage that applies to every GPU driver update.

The useful question is not “What percentage does this driver add?” but “Under my fixed test conditions, is the difference larger than normal run-to-run variation, and does it improve the frames that reach the display?” That requires more than a single screenshot or one benchmark pass.

- Asset streaming, shader compilation, background tasks and clock changes can make two otherwise identical runs differ.
- Averages can hide a short burst of very long frames. The game may report a higher average while feeling less smooth.
- Rendered timing is measured earlier in the graphics pipeline than displayed timing, so a frame counted as rendered may not yet have reached the screen.
- Driver installers or profile resets can silently change resolution, frame caps, power mode or other variables.
Reliable testing is a repeatable experiment with a written test matrix, not an anecdote.

Freeze the test matrix before changing the driver
Record every variable that can affect frame production or display. Save the list before installing anything so you can restore a setting that resets during the update.
| Category | Record and hold constant |
|---|---|
| Hardware | Exact GPU model, CPU, system memory and display. Note the monitor resolution and refresh rate. |
| Software versions | Current GPU driver, target driver, Windows build, game build and benchmark or capture-tool version. |
| Game settings | Graphics preset, ray tracing options, texture and shadow settings, resolution, HDR, V-Sync, frame cap, upscaling mode and quality, and frame-generation setting. |
| Workload | The same save file, built-in benchmark or route, camera path, enemies and weather state where applicable. |
| System state | Power mode, laptop AC state, GPU control-panel profile, overlays, recording tools, browser tabs, downloads, RGB utilities and scheduled scans. |
Write down whether the display is running at a fixed refresh rate or variable refresh rate. Do not change refresh-rate or synchronization settings between conditions. If a game uses a shader cache or streams assets, document that state and define in advance how you will handle the first run.

FrameView for repeatable logs
NVIDIA describes FrameView as an application for measuring frame rates, frame times, power and performance-per-watt across a wide range of graphics cards and APIs. It can display a configurable overlay and save logs using PresentMon-based analytics. Use the same FrameView version, overlay choices and logging settings for both drivers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Rendered versus displayed timing
FrameView separates Rendered FPS and MsBetweenPresents from Displayed FPS and MsBetweenDisplayChangeActual. Rendered timing is sampled near the beginning of the graphics pipeline. Displayed timing is sampled at the end of the pipeline and is closer to what reaches the monitor.
When the tool supports both, report both. A driver can improve the time at which the application presents frames without improving the time at which those frames are actually displayed.
Percentiles reveal the slow tail
A percentile frame-time value is a threshold below which a specified percentage of frames falls. Low-percentile FPS or the corresponding high-percentile frame time exposes occasional long frames that an average can hide. Include a 1% low, or an equivalent percentile supplied by the tool, and at least one relevant frame-time percentile in the report.

What changed in FrameView 2.0
FrameView 2.0 counts dropped and zero-display presents in its FPS reporting. That is intended to characterize stutter, 1% lows and 10% highs more accurately. Because the counting behavior changed, an average FPS value can move slightly even when the underlying workload did not; do not compare logs made with different reporting versions without labeling that limitation.

GPUView for difficult cases
Microsoft’s GPUView is an ETW-based diagnostic tool. It displays GPU and CPU activity, driver events, command-buffer timing and synchronization intervals from trace logs. It is not necessary for every comparison, but it can explain a noisy result that a simple FPS log cannot.
Run the before-and-after experiment
1. Define the run protocol
Choose the capture interval, warm-up period, route and run count before touching the driver. The official guidance supports running the identical scene several times; it does not establish one universal number that works for every game. The important requirement is that you use the same predefined count in both conditions and inspect the spread. If the spread is as large as the apparent driver change, add runs or classify the result as inconclusive.
Decide how you will treat shader compilation and asset streaming. Either warm the workload in both driver conditions or exclude the affected first run by a rule written before you inspect the results. Do not discard an inconvenient run only after seeing its FPS.
2. Prepare a quiet system
- Close downloads, browsers, launchers doing updates, recording software, overlays, RGB utilities and scheduled scans when possible.
- Connect a laptop to its normal test power source and select the recorded power mode.
- Reboot, wait for the desktop and background services to settle, then launch only the software required for the test.
Keep the capture tool itself unchanged. A different overlay, logging mode or capture version can alter overhead or metric definitions.
3. Capture the old-driver baseline
- Verify the GPU, driver version, Windows build, resolution, refresh rate, power mode and game settings against your test matrix.
- Open the same save, benchmark or route and perform the predefined warm-up.
- Start logging for the fixed capture interval. Follow the same camera path and actions every time.
- Save the complete raw log for every run; do not keep only the headline FPS.
- Repeat until you have completed the planned baseline sequence. Label each file with the driver, run number and workload.
Use the same order for all runs unless your protocol explicitly randomizes order. If the game has an internal benchmark, use its fixed sequence. For a manual route, record enough detail that another person can repeat the path.

4. Install the target driver without adding a confounder
Close monitoring and overlay utilities before installation. NVIDIA warns that a running monitoring application can interfere with installation or leave a lower power target that reduces performance. After installation, reboot and verify the test matrix again. Pay special attention to resolution, frame caps, power mode and game-profile settings, which can reset.
5. Repeat the exact sequence
Use the same reboot and settling procedure, warm-up, route, camera path, capture duration, run count and file-labeling convention. Do not change graphics quality to “show what the new driver can do”; that answers a different question. If the driver triggers shader recompilation, document it and apply the same warm-up or exclusion rule you used for the baseline.
What to record for every run
A useful worksheet has one row per run and preserves the raw log location. Include at least these columns:
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Condition | Old or new driver, with the complete version string. |
| Run and workload ID | Shows which pass, save file or benchmark sequence produced the data. |
| Rendered FPS | Application-side throughput near the start of the pipeline. |
| Displayed FPS | Frames that reached the display according to the capture method. |
| Mean and median FPS | Central tendency; use the same statistic on both driver conditions. |
| 1% low or equivalent | Low-end behavior that exposes slow frames. |
| Frame-time percentile | Long-frame tail, expressed in milliseconds and interpreted as lower being better. |
| Minimum FPS | A descriptive extreme, not a stable performance summary. |
| Dropped or zero-display indicators | Evidence that counted frames did not reach the screen normally. |
| Notes | Shader compilation, streaming, a background task, a hitch or any deviation from the route. |
Summarize distributions, not anecdotes
For each driver condition, report the mean and median FPS, a 1% low or equivalent percentile, relevant frame-time percentiles, the minimum FPS as a descriptive value, and the run-to-run range. Keep the individual rows as well as the aggregate. A single average erases the information needed to judge consistency.
Use one statistic on both sides
For any FPS statistic, calculate the percentage change as:
percent change = (new value - old value) / old value × 100

Report the absolute difference as well. Compare mean with mean, median with median and displayed 1% low with displayed 1% low. Do not compare an old mean with a new median. For frame time, lower milliseconds are better, so interpret the direction separately from FPS; a negative percentage in milliseconds can represent an improvement.
Show run-to-run spread
List the lowest and highest value, or another clearly defined spread, for each condition. If the old-driver runs range widely and the new-driver runs overlap that range, the apparent gain may be ordinary noise. If the direction repeats in every run and the difference is larger than the normal spread, confidence increases, but it is still specific to the tested workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether the gain is a real improvement
Use three tests together:
- Direction: the same condition wins across repeated runs rather than alternating.
- Magnitude: the difference is larger than normal run-to-run variation.
- Frame pacing: low-percentile FPS, frame-time tails, displayed FPS and dropped-display behavior do not worsen.
A higher average with worse 1% lows or displayed timing is a mixed result or pacing regression, not a clean win. A higher rendered FPS with unchanged or lower displayed FPS means the extra work is not reaching the screen reliably. FrameView’s dropped and zero-display accounting is particularly relevant to this interpretation.
Classify the outcome
| Observed pattern | Practical classification |
|---|---|
| Average, median and low-percentile results improve; displayed timing also improves; spread is small | Credible improvement for this workload and configuration. |
| Average rises, but 1% lows or long-frame percentiles worsen | Higher throughput with worse pacing; not a clean win. |
| Rendered FPS rises, displayed FPS does not | Pipeline-side gain that may not be visible at the monitor. |
| Results alternate between runs or ranges overlap heavily | Inconclusive; reduce noise or collect more predefined runs. |
| Both conditions are capped at the same frame rate | The cap may mask a driver difference; test an uncapped or differently bounded scenario only if that change is part of a new, separately labeled protocol. |
Cover more than one workload when making a broader claim
A driver comparison becomes more informative when it includes several games or engines, graphics APIs and scenes that exercise different limits. Keep each workload’s settings and route fixed, and analyze each one separately before discussing an overall pattern.
- Include a GPU-limited scene so shader, rasterization or scheduling changes can appear.
- Include a CPU-limited scene to show whether an apparent GPU gain is actually blocked elsewhere.
- Use both rendered and displayed measurements where available.
- Do not average unrelated games into one headline percentage unless you explain the weighting and preserve every per-game result.
One game can establish a result for that game. It cannot establish a universal driver benefit across hardware and software.

Runs disagree after the update
- Check that the game build, save, route, resolution, upscaling, frame generation and cap did not change.
- Confirm that Windows power mode and the GPU profile were restored.
- Look for downloads, antivirus scans, browser activity, overlays or recording processes.
- Check whether one condition compiled shaders or streamed assets while the other was already warm.
- Repeat the reboot, settling and warm-up sequence exactly.
Average improves but the game feels stutterier
Inspect displayed FPS, 1% lows, high-percentile frame time and dropped or zero-display presents. A mean can increase when most frames are fast even though a small number of very long frames has become worse. Report the regression rather than selecting the average as the verdict.
Best Value
Rendered and displayed numbers diverge
Check synchronization, presentation mode, variable-refresh behavior and dropped-display indicators. The rendered metric describes work presented by the application; the displayed metric is closer to the final visible result. Keep both labels in the table so readers do not mistake one for the other.
Escalate with an ETW trace
When ordinary logs cannot explain the variance, use Microsoft’s documented GPUView workflow: start an ETW trace, reproduce the workload, stop the trace and inspect it in GPUView. Look for CPU saturation, GPU bubbles, driver scheduling changes, synchronization delays and background activity. The trace can show whether the long frames come from the CPU, GPU, driver or a wait between them.
Make the result reproducible
Publish or retain the raw logs and this identification block with the comparison:
- GPU model, CPU and system memory.
- Old and new driver versions.
- Windows build and game build.
- Resolution, refresh rate, preset, ray tracing, upscaling mode and quality, frame generation, HDR, V-Sync and frame cap.
- Power mode and whether the system was on AC power.
- Save file or benchmark name, route, warm-up rule, capture interval and run count.
- Capture-tool name, version and settings, including whether rendered and displayed metrics were enabled.
- Every run’s raw log, aggregate statistics and notes about compilation, streaming or anomalies.
These details let another reader reproduce the comparison and distinguish a driver effect from a changed test environment.
The practical answer to “How much FPS will I gain?”
Only a controlled measurement for your specific GPU, game, driver pair and settings can answer it. Official FrameView materials define the measurements and percentile behavior, but they do not provide a universal cross-platform gain figure. Treat any percentage without those conditions as incomplete, and treat a repeatable displayed-frame improvement with stable pacing as stronger evidence than a one-run average.
