A Hindustan Times report attributes related tips—including waiting after a meal and taking three readings—to neurologist Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, but the outlet said it had not independently verified the social-media claims.
How long should you wait before measuring blood pressure?
Before taking a home reading, avoid exercise, smoking, and caffeinated drinks for at least 30 minutes. The CDC also cautions that alcohol in the 30 minutes before a measurement may make the result higher. Some American Heart Association (AHA) educational guidance advises waiting 30 minutes after a meal as well.
The October 2, 2026, Hindustan Times report attributes a 30-minute wait after exercise, a walk, a meal, caffeine or tea, smoking, or alcohol to Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, based on an Instagram video posted September 6. The report says its article was based on user-generated social-media content, that it had not independently verified the claims, and that it did not endorse them. The timing advice for exercise and caffeine aligns with AHA and CDC guidance; the meal advice is also consistent with some AHA educational material.
After avoiding those activities, sit quietly for at least five minutes before measuring. Empty your bladder first, and do not talk or use your phone while taking the reading. These steps help reduce avoidable influences on the result.

How to take a home blood pressure reading
- Choose the right monitor. Use a validated automatic upper-arm blood pressure monitor and a cuff sized for your arm. Wrist and finger monitors are less reliable for routine measurement, according to the AHA.
- Position yourself. Sit with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, and legs uncrossed. Rest quietly for at least five minutes.
- Fit the cuff. Put it on bare skin, not over clothing. Support your arm so the middle of the cuff is at heart level.
- Stay still and silent. Do not talk, move, or use your phone during the measurement.
- Repeat and record. Take two readings one minute apart and write down both results. The CDC advises at least two readings, one or two minutes apart.
Bring your monitor to a healthcare appointment so a professional can check the cuff fit, your technique, and how its readings compare with office equipment.
Left arm or right arm? One reading or three?
The Hindustan Times report attributes a preference for the left arm and an average of three readings to Dr. Sehrawat. That is distinct from the AHA’s general home-monitoring guidance: it says either arm may be used and recommends two readings one minute apart. The CDC recommends at least two readings spaced one or two minutes apart. Follow the instructions from your clinician if they have asked you to use a particular arm or schedule.

What to do with the result
A blood pressure reading is a snapshot, not by itself a diagnosis. Record repeat readings and share the log with a healthcare professional, who can advise how often to measure and interpret the pattern alongside your health history. The CDC notes that as many as 1 in 3 people with a high reading at a doctor’s office may have normal readings outside it; this refers to possible white coat syndrome, not the prevalence of hypertension.
The AHA says a single high reading is not an immediate cause for alarm. Home monitoring does not replace regular medical visits, and you should not stop or change prescribed medication based on home readings without checking with your clinician.
