There is no single, provider-neutral energy figure for “an AI prompt.” A useful result depends on the model, input and output lengths, serving setup, workload, and—especially—the measurement boundary. To measure it well, define what energy you are counting, divide by completed work, and report latency and output quality alongside the result. To reduce energy, test changes such as batching, quantization, and model choice against representative tasks rather than assuming any one optimization will help every deployment.

What does energy per AI inference mean?

Inference is the work a trained model performs to serve a request. Energy per inference expresses the energy used for a defined amount of that work; energy per token expresses it relative to a stated token count. Those figures are only comparable when they use the same workload and energy boundary.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) gives the basic calculation as energy per inference (Wh) = total runtime energy (Wh) ÷ inference count. For energy per token, its report gives energy per token (Wh) = (power × inference duration) ÷ (number of tokens × 3,600). The factor of 3,600 converts watt-seconds to watt-hours. Use consistent units and state whether “tokens” means generated output tokens, input plus output tokens, or another defined count. See the ITU’s 2025 report, Measuring what matters: How to assess AI’s environmental impact.

Set the measurement boundary before collecting data

A result can describe different things, and the labels should make that distinction explicit:

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
  • Accelerator energy: energy used by a GPU or other accelerator during the measured work.
  • Whole-server energy: accelerator energy plus the server’s other components, such as the host CPU and memory.
  • Facility energy: energy that also accounts for data-center overhead such as cooling and power delivery, depending on the accounting method.

These are not interchangeable quantities. A shared server or data center also raises an attribution question: what share of idle capacity and general-purpose infrastructure belongs to the AI workload? The IEEE Standards Association’s active P7100 project describes a framework for reporting environmental indicators for AI training and inference and for separating AI-specific compute from general-purpose data-center compute. P7100 is an active project, not a completed standard. Its scope is described on the IEEE P7100 project page.

Build a benchmark that another team can interpret

Record enough detail to explain what was measured and to repeat the comparison. A useful benchmark record includes:

  • Model: model name and version, plus the serving software and relevant configuration.
  • Workload: representative tasks or prompts, input and output lengths, and the number of completed requests.
  • Serving conditions: hardware, batch size, numerical precision, concurrency, and measurement duration.
  • Instrumentation and boundary: energy instrument or telemetry source, and whether host CPU, memory, idle capacity, power-supply losses, or cooling are included.
  • Denominator: whether the result is per completed request, per output token, or per input-plus-output token.
  • Service outcomes: latency, throughput, and a task-quality measure appropriate to the workload.

For a carbon estimate, report the electricity emissions-factor source and its location and time basis; specify whether accounting is location-based or market-based where applicable. Energy and carbon are separate quantities: carbon depends on the electricity supply and the accounting basis as well as the amount of energy consumed. The ITU cautions that assumptions about runtime, generic hardware, and generic carbon-intensity factors can introduce significant uncertainty.

How much energy does an AI prompt use?

There is no single provider-neutral, directly measured value established for “an AI prompt.” Prompt and response lengths, model, serving system, batching, idle capacity, and measurement boundary can all change the result.

One useful illustration—not a universal benchmark—is Google’s provider-reported figure of 0.24 Wh for a median Gemini Apps text prompt in May 2025. Google also reported 0.03 gCO2e and 0.26 milliliters of water for that prompt. The emissions figure uses Google’s methodology and its 2024 average fleetwide grid-carbon-intensity. Google compared the May 2025 result with a median text-generation prompt in May 2024. These are specific to Google’s service, definitions, and method; they should not be applied to other providers or workloads as a typical prompt value. Details are in Google Cloud’s methodology for measuring AI inference’s environmental impact.

Keep broader provider statistics separate from inference measurements. Google reported that data-center energy emissions fell 12% while electricity consumption grew 27% year over year in 2024; those are company-wide figures, not an inference-only measurement. They appear in Google’s account of its energy and AI environmental-footprint approach.

How to measure energy per request or token

  1. Choose representative work. Use a task mix, request volume, and input and output lengths that resemble the deployment. An isolated short prompt is not a substitute for a service workload.
  2. Declare the boundary and denominator. For example, state that the metric is whole-server watt-hours per completed request, or accelerator watt-hours per generated output token. Do not switch boundaries or token-count definitions between comparisons.
  3. Measure runtime energy. Use suitable hardware telemetry or an energy instrument over a stated interval, and document what it covers. If the service shares capacity, state how shared and idle energy is allocated; the right method depends on available provider telemetry and the deployment.
  4. Count completed work over the same interval. Divide runtime energy by completed inferences for energy per request, or by the declared token total for energy per token. Use watt-hours consistently; if starting with power in watts, multiply by elapsed seconds and divide by 3,600 to obtain watt-hours.
  5. Record service behavior. Alongside energy, report latency, throughput, batch and concurrency conditions, and a task-quality measure. Note failures or retries if they are part of the observed workload, rather than counting only ideal completions.
  6. Repeat and compare like with like. Run enough representative measurements to characterize normal variation. A result from a different model, task set, hardware, batch policy, or boundary is not a clean comparison.

Measurement and estimation are different. The 2024 IEEE Access study introduces EnergyMeter, a Python tool for profiling software energy, and examines model characteristics, batch size, quantization, energy, and latency under its tested configurations. Those experimental results are evidence that such variables matter, not fixed production constants. See the IEEE Access paper, “Measuring and Improving the Energy Efficiency of Large Language Models Inference”.

How to reduce inference energy without losing useful output

Start with a baseline that reflects real work. Track energy per completed task and per token, but also latency, throughput, and quality. A change that produces shorter answers may look efficient while making the system less useful or causing more retries. Evaluate the service outcome, not just a convenient proxy.

Test batching

Batching can change energy efficiency and latency by serving multiple inputs together. Measure it at the concurrency and request mix the system actually encounters: production batching behavior may differ from an isolated benchmark. Record the batch settings, throughput, and latency so that an apparent per-request energy improvement is not separated from its operating conditions.

Test quantization and serving configuration

Quantization and other serving choices can alter energy use and response time. Evaluate each configuration on the target tasks, with the target quality and latency requirements. The EnergyMeter study examines these variables in its own test setups; it does not establish that a given quantization level is a guaranteed win in every deployment.

Compare models and architectures on equivalent work

Model size and architectural characteristics affect inference energy, but a smaller or different model is a meaningful improvement only if it completes equivalent tasks at acceptable quality. Compare options using the same task set and quality criteria, and report energy per completed task, energy per output token, latency, throughput, and the measurement boundary.

Use production-scale assumptions for fleet estimates

Do not scale a lightly loaded or non-production test to fleet energy without checking throughput, utilization, and serving assumptions. Microsoft Research’s September 2025 analysis found that non-production estimates and assumptions could overstate results by 4–20× in the scenarios it analyzed. That range is not a universal correction factor; it is a reason to model deployment conditions carefully. See Microsoft Research, “Energy Use of AI Inference: Efficiency Pathways and Test-Time Compute”.

Report energy and carbon as different results

Energy describes electricity consumed under the declared measurement boundary. Carbon estimates additionally depend on the electricity emissions factor and its location, time, and accounting basis. Google’s figures illustrate why the two should not be merged: its May 2025 prompt emissions result uses a stated grid-carbon-intensity methodology, while its energy result is an energy quantity. A reader comparing deployments needs both the energy method and the emissions-factor basis, not an unlabeled carbon figure.

Estimates based on generic runtime, hardware, or grid assumptions should be presented as estimates, with their assumptions visible. InferenceCarbon’s methodology v1.0.0, updated October 1, 2026, is one example of a published estimation method; it does not replace deployment-specific telemetry where that is available.

What a fair comparison should include

When comparing two models or serving configurations, put the results side by side only when the workload and boundaries are aligned. Include these comparison dimensions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Energy per completed task and energy per output token.
  • Task quality and whether the options meet the same acceptance criteria.
  • Latency and throughput.
  • Batch size, concurrency, and other serving assumptions.
  • Measurement boundary and uncertainty.
  • Carbon intensity for the relevant deployment location and time, reported separately from energy.

If one option is measured at the accelerator and another at facility level, or if their task mix differs, the numbers do not support a straightforward ranking.
