Australian teams can control AI API spending by measuring cost per request and successful task, then reducing unnecessary context and output, testing prompt caching, batching eligible work, and comparing models on representative examples. There is no authoritative Australia-wide figure here showing that local organisations spend more tokens than teams elsewhere, so treat “bleeding tokens” as a cost problem to investigate—not an established national trend.
How do I attribute API costs for AI?
Start with request-level usage, not a monthly total alone. A token is a unit of model input or output, not a word; tokenization varies by model and language. Depending on the provider and model, charges may distinguish ordinary input, cached input, cache writes, output, reasoning, or tool use. OpenAI’s token guidance explains why token counts and costs can differ across models.

Export provider usage and invoice data for a representative period. Group records by application, team, model, environment, and workflow wherever the provider exposes those dimensions. If it does not provide enough detail, attach your own application or gateway identifiers to requests and log them alongside the provider’s usage response.
For each request, capture as many of these fields as the API exposes:

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
- Timestamp, application, team, environment, workflow, and request identifier.
- Model and endpoint; input and output tokens; cached tokens and cache writes, if applicable.
- Reasoning-token and tool-use charges where reported separately.
- Latency, retries, number of completions, and whether the request produced a successful task outcome.
- Realized cost calculated from the applicable provider rates and token categories.
Include retries and multiple completions in the calculation: a retry or extra completion can consume additional tokens. Include tool charges where they apply. OpenAI recommends tracking cache use and realized cost in its prompt-caching guidance; its pricing page lists model-specific billing categories. Check current rates and the terms on your own account before calculating savings.
Which usage patterns should you investigate first?
Rank workflows by total spend and cost per successful task, then inspect the requests driving those totals. These are audit targets, not claims about the habits of Australian organisations generally.
- Repeated system instructions or documents included in many requests.
- Long conversation histories that retain stale or irrelevant turns.
- Large retrieval results sent without filtering for relevance.
- Responses that routinely exceed what the task requires.
- Routine tasks routed to a higher-cost model without evidence that its quality is needed.
Compare quality on representative cases before changing a model or prompt. A lower listed input rate does not by itself mean a lower cost per completed task: models may tokenize the same text differently or produce different output and reasoning volumes.

How can you reduce unnecessary tokens?
Trim input context
Remove duplicated, stale, and task-irrelevant material. Retrieve or pass only the portions needed to answer the current request. If a large document can be summarized or preprocessed first, test that approach against the original input and confirm that task quality remains acceptable.
Limit output to the task
Set a maximum output size supported by the chosen endpoint and model, based on the answer the workflow actually needs. Avoid asking for expansive explanations when a concise result is sufficient. On models that use reasoning tokens, leave adequate room for the model to complete the task; a limit that is too restrictive can impair results or cause incomplete responses. Token counting and supported limits are model- and endpoint-specific, so consult the provider’s token guidance.
When is prompt caching worth testing?
Caching can reduce the cost of repeated input when requests share a sufficiently long, stable prefix. It is less useful when prompts change substantially on every call or the reusable portion is too short. Put reusable instructions and context at the beginning of the prompt where the provider’s implementation requires a matching prefix, and verify actual cache reads and writes in usage data rather than assuming a hit.

Pricing and matching rules vary by provider, model, and service. OpenAI’s current documentation accessed in 2026 says that, for GPT-5.6 and later, cache writes cost 1.25 times the standard input price and subsequent reads cost 0.1 times that price on most covered models; it identifies GPT-6.1 Sol as an exception with a 0.05-times read multiplier. These are model-specific terms and may change. Check the current OpenAI caching guide for the model you use.
Azure’s documentation says supported prompts need at least 1,024 tokens and an identical first 1,024 tokens to qualify for a cache hit; a single-character change in that prefix causes a miss. The details depend on deployment and model family, so verify them in Azure’s caching guidance for your service.

Batch processing may suit asynchronous work—such as queued classification or summarization—when users can wait for results. Before switching, check that the provider and model support the batch route, that your requests meet eligibility rules, and that the turnaround fits the workflow. Compare the applicable batch rate and constraints with standard API use.

Anthropic’s pricing documentation accessed in 2026 lists a 50% discount on input and output tokens for its Batch API. That figure applies to the documented Anthropic service; it is not a general discount available across providers. Check the current Anthropic pricing terms.
How should you compare models and providers?
Build a small evaluation set from representative requests and compare complete task outcomes, not headline input prices. Record quality, latency, total input and output use, reasoning or tool charges, cache behavior, and realized cost. Repeat the evaluation when prompts, models, or pricing change.

What Australian teams should verify on their own account
Provider documentation establishes API mechanics and listed prices; it does not establish that Australian organisations have unusually high token spend. Check your actual billing currency, regional processing or deployment choice, taxes, and negotiated terms in your own contract and provider console.
