To track your brand’s presence in AI search, measure four things separately: whether an answer mentions your brand, whether it cites your pages, how your citations compare with others in a defined prompt sample, and whether AI assistants send visits to your site. None is a universal AI visibility score. Every reported number should name the engine or surface, prompt set, date range, denominator, and metric definition.

What AI visibility metrics actually measure

AI search reporting covers different points in a chain: a model may name a brand, cite one of its pages, cite it more or less often than other sources, and send a user to the site. These observations are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Metric What to count What it does not establish
Brand mention Whether an answer names the brand, whether or not it links to the brand’s site. A mention alone does not show that a page was cited or a visit occurred.
Owned-page citation Whether an answer lists one of your pages as a source. A citation is not a rank, impression, click, or visit.
Citation share Your citations as a proportion of citations in a defined query or prompt sample. It is not meaningful without its denominator, sample, competitor set, and calculation rule.
AI referral sessions Sessions arriving at your site from AI assistants, as reported by analytics. Traffic does not measure how often your brand appeared in answers.

Keep pages an AI system found or retrieved but did not cite separate from pages actually cited if your measurement tool exposes that distinction. Ahrefs, for example, treats “found but not cited” pages as a separate state in its metric definitions.

Why a citation count is not a search ranking

A citation count records sources displayed in AI-generated answers; it does not say where your content appeared within each answer or how many people saw it. Microsoft describes Bing Webmaster Tools’ Total Citations as citations displayed during the selected period, without indicating placement or presentation within a particular answer. Its AI Performance announcement also presents the report as citation activity and cited URLs, not as a traditional rank report.

Microsoft Clarity likewise says its citation dashboard does not measure traditional search rankings, impressions, or click-through rates. A top result in conventional search therefore should not be treated as proof that a brand will appear in a generated answer. AI answers are contextual and can synthesize information from multiple sources.

How to build a repeatable measurement system

The most useful comparison is not a large score from one run. It is a consistent series of observations on the questions your audience asks.

  1. Set the scope. List the organization and product names, relevant competitors, audience, languages, regions, and business questions you need to answer. Decide which AI experiences matter for that audience.
  2. Create a fixed prompt panel. Include real buyer questions, separating branded prompts from non-branded topical prompts. Preserve exact wording and record which prompts belong to the panel. Add new questions as a separately labeled cohort rather than silently changing the sample.
  3. Repeat the same observations. On a recurring schedule, run the same prompts across the same engines or surfaces. Save the date, surface, prompt, answer, brand mention, owned-page citations, other cited domains, and notable factual inaccuracies. HubSpot’s guide recommends using a fixed set of prompts over time; its tracking guide describes the approach.
  4. Calculate separate rates. For a mention rate, count responses that mention the brand and divide by responses checked. For an owned citation rate, count responses citing at least one owned page and divide by responses checked. State the numerator and denominator, and apply the same rule to every competitor.
  5. Keep referral sessions in analytics. Measure visits attributed to AI assistants in your web analytics rather than inferring traffic from mentions or citations. Clarity defines AI referral traffic as AI-referred sessions divided by total sessions for the period.
  6. Review trends and investigate changes. Compare like-for-like dates, prompt cohorts, and surfaces. Look for pages and topics that gain or lose citations, then investigate possible changes in content, freshness, competing material, platform behavior, or user demand.

What to put beside every reported figure

  • AI engine or surface, including any relevant product experience.
  • Prompt/query panel and whether it is branded or non-branded.
  • Date range and sampling schedule.
  • Metric definition, numerator, denominator, and competitor set for comparative figures.
  • Region and language where those affect the observation.
  • Whether the figure is observed, a vendor-defined estimate, or a preview-platform metric.

A one-time run is a baseline snapshot, not evidence of lasting visibility. The output is a sample of answers, not a census of private user conversations.

Choose tools based on the question you need answered

Start with a fixed prompt log if the goal is a low-cost baseline and answer-quality review. Add first-party dashboards for their reported coverage, and consider a packaged monitor only when its prompt inventory, history, engine coverage, and definitions meet a real reporting need.

Option Documented coverage and use Important interpretation
Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance Microsoft says the public preview reports citations in Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and select partner integrations, including citation totals, cited pages, and activity over time. Microsoft announced Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare as a global preview rollout in June 2026. The capabilities are preview features, and Microsoft says quality, coverage, and precision are expected to improve. They do not produce a single ranking or score. See the February 2026 announcement and the June 2026 update.
Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility Reports page citations, cited pages, topics/queries, Share of Authority, and AI referral sessions. Domain verification is required; Clarity documents verification via its tracking code, Google Search Console, or Bing Webmaster Tools. Share of Authority is domain citations divided by citations from all domains, calculated daily among queries with activity; Clarity also separates branded and non-branded queries. Its citation dashboard excludes traditional rankings, impressions, and CTR. See Citation Dashboard metrics and the overview.
Manual prompt log Repeat a fixed panel, save answers and source links, and annotate mentions, citations, and answer accuracy. Useful for an inexpensive baseline and qualitative review. Results are sampled observations; consistency of prompts, surfaces, and timing matters more than treating one run as a definitive measure.
Ahrefs Brand Radar and free checker Ahrefs describes its free checker as a snapshot across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Paid Brand Radar includes historical trends, custom prompt tracking, and competitor benchmarking. Definitions are vendor-specific. Ahrefs’ estimated impressions use Google search volume for prompts associated with appearances in AI answers; that is an estimate, not observed exposure to AI responses. See its AI visibility checker and metric definitions.
HubSpot AEO HubSpot describes tracking mentions, citations, prompts, and competitors as part of a bundled workflow. The vendor guide explains the workflow but does not independently validate cross-vendor score accuracy. See HubSpot’s guide.

How to interpret comparative metrics and estimates

Citation share needs a denominator

“Share of Authority” and “Citation Share” sound comparable, but the label alone does not specify the method. Clarity’s documented Share of Authority divides citations to a domain by citations to all domains and calculates daily among queries that had activity. A change in active queries can therefore affect the value. Microsoft’s June 2026 Bing preview added Citation Share alongside topic and intent views, but the announcement does not make every vendor’s metric definition interchangeable. Always report the tool’s rule and the sampled queries.

Estimated impressions are not observed exposure

Ahrefs defines estimated impressions using Google search volumes for prompts where a brand appears in an AI answer, with a selected high-volume keyword association. That can be useful as a vendor-defined estimate, but it does not mean that many people saw the AI answer, nor does it count measured views of that answer.

Sentiment, prominence, and accuracy need an explicit rubric

Teams may annotate whether an answer is positive, where a brand appears, or whether its statements are accurate. The reviewed platform documentation does not establish a common validated standard for those scores. If you track them, define the rubric, scoring unit, and reviewer process, and keep the annotations distinct from platform-reported counts.

Why tools report different numbers

Two platforms can legitimately produce different results because their prompt inventories, engine coverage, sampling schedules, denominators, and definitions differ. Before comparing figures, check whether both tools observed the same prompts and answer surfaces over the same dates, counted a mention once per response or multiple times, and treated citations and retrieved-but-uncited pages consistently. Ahrefs, for instance, counts a brand once per AI response even if the answer repeats it; another metric may use a different rule.

There is no neutral, independently validated benchmark in the reviewed measurement materials for what constitutes a “good” AI visibility score. Set goals around your own defined audience questions, citation patterns, referral outcomes, and business needs rather than an unsupported universal percentage.
