For large-area high-temperature-superconductor (HTS) films, an AC coil scanned above the surface detects the nonlinear third-harmonic voltage. Repeating the threshold measurement at several frequencies provides an electric-field criterion for estimating local critical-current density without soldering leads or forcing the specimen into a resistive state.
That result is not automatically the same as a device’s transport critical current. A transport test measures the current through the complete conductor at a specified voltage criterion; magnetic methods usually report local Jc, sheet current, or an effective shielding current derived from a model. Choosing the right quantity before choosing the instrument is the key to a useful, non-destructive measurement.

What you are actually measuring
“Critical current” can refer to several related quantities. Define the quantity first, because the test method, units, uncertainty and interpretation all depend on that definition.
Transport critical current, Ic
Transport Ic is the current passed through the conductor while voltage taps measure the resulting electric field. The reported value is the current at a chosen electric-field or voltage criterion. A tape rated at one criterion can therefore have a different numerical Ic at another criterion. This is the direct engineering answer to “How much current can the whole conductor carry before its voltage exceeds my limit?”

Because current and heat are injected through contacts, transport testing requires current leads, voltage taps, a controlled ramp and adequate thermal anchoring. A careful test can be non-destructive, but driving past the criterion or allowing a quench can damage a film, tape or solder joint.
Critical-current density, Jc
Jc is current per cross-sectional area, normally expressed in A/m². Magnetic methods infer it from shielding currents and the sample geometry. A thin-film inductive test often measures critical sheet current, Jcd, where d is film thickness, in A/m. Converting a sheet value to Jc requires a trustworthy thickness and a model that matches the coil, film and field distribution.
Local, global and effective currents
A magnetic scan can reveal a low-current patch, a crack, a weak link or an edge defect that would be hidden by a whole-sample average. Conversely, a magnetization loop can return an effective current over the length scale assumed by a critical-state model. In a granular material, distinguish intragrain current from intergranular or global current. In a plate-like sample, weak links can make the current-carrying length smaller than the physical sample dimension.
Why contactless measurement is safer
A contactless test applies a magnetic field and observes the superconductor’s response. There are no soldered leads to tear a film, no contact resistance to heat the sample and no need to ramp a large transport current through a valuable specimen. The safest operating point is below the level that produces irreversible heating, mechanical motion or a permanent change in the magnetic response.
“Non-destructive” does not mean “risk-free.” Excessive AC amplitude can heat a thin film; a large DC field can drive flux motion; poor thermal contact can make the apparent threshold drift; and repeated scans can alter a weak-link network. Use small amplitudes first, verify reversibility and stop if the baseline or harmonic signal changes after a scan.

Preferred method for large HTS films: third-harmonic inductive scanning
IEC 61788-17:2021 specifies an inductive method for measuring local critical-current density and its distribution in large-area HTS films by detecting third-harmonic voltages. A small AC excitation coil is positioned just above the film, and a pickup channel measures the voltage generated by the nonlinear magnetic response.
How the third harmonic appears
At low drive, shielding is approximately linear and the response is dominated by the fundamental frequency. As the local current approaches the film’s critical-current density, flux penetrates nonlinearly. That distortion produces odd harmonics, especially the third harmonic. The onset or threshold of the third-harmonic signal is used as a marker for the local current limit.

- Stabilize the specimen. Mount the film on a thermally controlled stage and wait for the temperature to settle. Record temperature and whether a DC magnetic field is present. The IEC 61788-17:2021 method scope described here is for measurements without a DC background field.
- Measure geometry. Record film thickness, length, width, substrate, coil diameter, coil-to-surface lift-off and scan coordinates. Thickness uncertainty directly affects conversion from sheet current to Jc.
- Position the coil. Keep the coil parallel to the surface and maintain a repeatable lift-off. A change in spacing alters coupling and can look like a change in material quality.
- Apply a small AC drive. Begin below the expected threshold and increase the coil current in controlled steps. Monitor the third-harmonic amplitude and the sample temperature at every step.
- Determine the threshold. Identify the drive current at which the third-harmonic response departs from the noise floor according to a documented criterion. Do not silently change the threshold from one specimen to another.
- Repeat at several frequencies. The frequency dependence links the threshold response to an electric-field criterion. Use the same coil position and amplitude protocol at each frequency.
- Scan the area. Move the coil on a defined grid or along lines of interest. Store the raw harmonic amplitude, phase, drive current, frequency, temperature and coordinates, not only the final color map.
- Convert and report. Apply the validated coil and film model to obtain local sheet current or Jc. State the electric-field criterion, model assumptions, thickness and uncertainty with the map.
What this method can and cannot tell you
The IEC page reports a result-based sheet-current range of 200 A/m to 32 kA/m and a resolution of 100 A/m for the method. It also gives target relative combined standard uncertainty below 10% for the absolute value of Jc and below 5% for homogeneity evaluation within the stated scope. Those figures are method targets, not a guarantee for every homemade coil, lift-off or sample geometry.
The measurement intrinsically concerns critical sheet current, Jcd. It does not, by itself, provide the whole-device transport Ic of a patterned conductor with current leads, terminals, turns or stabilizer layers. Use a demonstrated correlation before converting a magnetic map into a transport rating.
AC susceptibility: a contactless alternative
In AC susceptibility, a sinusoidal magnetic field excites the specimen and a pickup coil, connected to a lock-in amplifier, measures the in-phase and out-of-phase response. Complex susceptibility can provide information about critical-current density, transition behavior, penetration depth and pinning.

Typical measurement sequence
- Cool the sample to the target temperature and allow the temperature controller to settle.
- Set the AC field amplitude and frequency, and record both values. If a DC field is applied, record its magnitude, orientation and ramp history.
- Measure the empty-coil and reference responses so the pickup-chain gain and phase can be corrected.
- Acquire the real and imaginary susceptibility components while sweeping temperature, field or frequency, depending on the question.
- Fit the data with a geometry-appropriate critical-state or electrodynamic model, then report the resulting Jc together with the model range.
For thin films, one published relation gives Jc = 1.9 Ha|χ′|0.69/d over the susceptibility interval and fully penetrated conditions specified by its authors. Treat that expression as a calibrated model, not a universal conversion. Finite London penetration depth, demagnetization and any DC background field must be considered before applying it.
Recommended Free Tools
Magnetic hysteresis, Hall probes and magneto-optical imaging
These methods observe how magnetization or local field changes during an applied-field sweep. A Bean or other critical-state inversion can estimate shielding-current density and reveal the length scale over which current circulates.
Magnetization hysteresis
Record the magnetization while increasing and decreasing the applied field. The loop width is converted to a current density using the specimen dimensions and an assumed current distribution. Demagnetization corrections are important for thin plates and irregular shapes. The result is usually a field- and temperature-dependent effective Jc, not a direct terminal-current measurement.
Hall-probe mapping
A Hall sensor scans the local magnetic field above the surface. Inversion of the field map can expose current crowding, cracks and weak links. Sensor height, calibration, spatial averaging and inversion regularization all affect the result. Keep the probe position fixed or measure its height accurately during a scan.
Magneto-optical imaging
A magneto-optical indicator converts local magnetic flux into an optical image while the applied field is changed. It is valuable for visualizing dendrites, flux penetration fronts and weak-link paths. The image still requires a field-to-current inversion and careful control of indicator contact, temperature and optical calibration.

Transport and magnetization values may agree at low fields but diverge as field and temperature increase because thermally activated flux motion changes the current distribution during the magnetic experiment. Report the field sweep rate or time dependence when comparing methods.
Monitoring long insulated tape in a changing field
For long conductors, a changing-field magnetic system can monitor manufacturing quality without attaching voltage taps at every location. One reported system reconstructed the voltage–current relation from frequency-dependent magnetic response and demonstrated monitoring over more than 500 m of tape. This approach is suited to process screening and lengthwise uniformity, not to replacing a standards-compliant short-sample transport qualification without a validated correlation.
Contactless methods compared
| Method | Contacts | Primary output | Local or average | DC-field compatibility | Main dependencies |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Third-harmonic coil scan | No | Local sheet current or model-derived Jc | Local map | IEC 61788-17:2021 scope described here excludes a DC background field | Coil geometry, lift-off, frequency, threshold criterion, thickness and temperature |
| AC susceptibility | No | Model-derived Jc, transition and pinning information | Usually a sampled or bulk response | Possible, but the model must include the DC field | Calibration, demagnetization, penetration depth, amplitude, frequency and geometry |
| Magnetization hysteresis | No | Effective shielding-current density | Whole specimen or model-defined region | Yes, with field and history recorded | Critical-state model, dimensions, demagnetization and flux creep |
| Hall or magneto-optical imaging | No | Local field and inferred current distribution | Highly local | Yes, within sensor and field limits | Sensor or indicator calibration, height, inversion and field history |
| Transport voltage-current test | Yes | Criterion-based whole-conductor Ic | Global along the voltage-tap span | Yes, with an appropriate cryogenic and magnet system | Contacts, voltage criterion, ramp rate, thermal stability and conductor geometry |
How to choose the method
- Choose third-harmonic scanning for a large HTS film when you need a non-contact local map of defects or uniformity.
- Choose AC susceptibility when you need temperature, frequency or transition studies and can justify a calibrated susceptibility model.
- Choose Hall or magneto-optical imaging when the question is where current flows, where flux enters or whether weak links are present.
- Choose hysteresis when a bulk or plate-like sample is available and an effective shielding-current density is sufficient.
- Choose transport testing when the specification is the current through a complete tape, wire, device or terminal assembly at a defined voltage criterion.
Controlling temperature, fields and geometry
Temperature is not a minor correction. Jc can change sharply with temperature, and AC losses can create a local temperature rise before the thermometer on the stage responds. Use a stable thermal path, wait for equilibrium, and log the sample temperature rather than only the cryostat set point.
Record the DC field, AC amplitude, frequency and field orientation. A field parallel to a film, perpendicular to it or tilted between the two can produce different vortex structures and different apparent critical currents. Record whether the field was zero-field cooled, field cooled or swept from a remanent state.
Measure dimensions and thickness at the location being tested. Include demagnetization treatment, coil lift-off, substrate properties and any correction for finite sample size. A model that assumes an infinite film can bias the edge of a small coupon; a model that ignores lift-off can turn a mechanical positioning error into a false defect.
Best Value
Validation without sacrificing the sample
- Check repeatability. Repeat a low-amplitude scan at the same position. The threshold and harmonic phase should return within the stated uncertainty.
- Check reversibility. Increase and then decrease the drive. A large hysteretic change suggests heating, flux trapping, weak-link rearrangement or mechanical movement.
- Check frequency behavior. The frequency series should follow the electrodynamic behavior assumed by the conversion model. An isolated outlier is a reason to inspect wiring, lock-in time constants and thermal stability.
- Check the instrument chain. Measure a reference sample or reference coil, verify phase and gain, and confirm that the third-harmonic signal is above the noise floor but not saturating the amplifier.
- Cross-check selectively. If a companion coupon or already-qualified section is available, compare a small number of points with transport data. Do not destroy the only specimen merely to create a comparison point.
- Stop on evidence of damage. Stop if the baseline shifts permanently, the sample temperature rises, the harmonic response becomes noisy or irreversible, or visual inspection reveals cracking or delamination.
Transport testing when a direct Ic is unavoidable
If the requirement is a terminal current, a contactless estimate cannot substitute for transport qualification unless the correlation has been demonstrated for that conductor design and criterion. Use current leads with low-resistance, mechanically secure contacts and voltage taps that span the region of interest. Ramp slowly enough for the thermal system to follow, define the electric-field criterion before the test and stop at the criterion rather than continuing into a quench.
IEC 61788-26:2020 specifies DC critical-current testing for short straight REBCO tapes. Its standard conditions include liquid nitrogen, no external magnetic field, a specimen length below 300 mm, critical current below 300 A and an n-value above 5. Those conditions describe the standard’s scope; they are not universal requirements for every transport experiment or every conductor.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Useful correction |
|---|---|---|
| Third harmonic appears everywhere at the same level | Pickup-chain feedthrough, amplifier distortion or coil nonlinearity | Measure the empty coil, reduce drive, verify shielding and check harmonic distortion with a reference load |
| Apparent defect follows the scan direction | Changing lift-off, tilt or stage position | Use a rigid fixture, map height and repeat the line in the reverse direction |
| Jc changes during a repeat scan | Heating, flux creep or weak-link rearrangement | Reduce amplitude, lengthen settling time, improve thermal anchoring and record field history |
| Magnetic and transport values disagree strongly | Different electric-field criteria, current-carrying lengths or model assumptions | Match criteria, report local versus global quantities and revisit demagnetization and weak-link assumptions |
| Susceptibility fit works only in part of the curve | Outside the model’s fully penetrated or stated susceptibility interval | Restrict the fit to its published range or use a model that includes partial penetration and finite penetration depth |
| Edge values are much higher or lower than the center | Real edge screening, finite-size effects or an infinite-film model used incorrectly | Use a finite-geometry model and report whether the map is edge-corrected |
Minimum information to publish with a result
A critical-current result without conditions is difficult to reproduce and easy to misinterpret. Include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Material, substrate, conductor architecture and sample dimensions.
- Temperature stability and measurement temperature.
- DC field, AC field amplitude, frequency and field orientation.
- Coil dimensions, lift-off, scan spacing and pickup-chain calibration for inductive tests.
- Sensor height and inversion method for Hall or magneto-optical measurements.
- Demagnetization treatment and the critical-state or electrodynamic model.
- Electric-field criterion, threshold definition and whether the reported value is Ic, Jc, sheet current or an effective shielding current.
- Uncertainty budget, repeatability and any regions excluded because of edge, contact or signal-to-noise effects.
- Whether the current is intragrain, intergranular, local, global or transport-derived.
A practical decision path
- Write the engineering question in one sentence. If it names a terminal voltage limit, plan a transport test. If it names uniformity, defects or preservation of a valuable specimen, plan a magnetic test.
- Choose the output and units. Decide between whole-sample Ic, local Jc, sheet current or an effective shielding current before collecting data.
- Select a method whose model matches the specimen. Use third-harmonic scanning for local HTS-film screening when its no-DC-field scope fits; use susceptibility, imaging or hysteresis when their geometry and field assumptions are satisfied.
- Set conservative excitation. Confirm thermal stability and reversibility before increasing amplitude or extending the scan.
- Validate and document. Repeat points, inspect frequency dependence, record all conditions and state exactly what the result does not establish.
The result is most defensible when the measurement leaves the specimen unchanged, the model is stated alongside the number and the distinction between magnetic Jc and transport Ic is preserved. Contactless methods can map and screen superconductors safely; only a criterion-matched transport test establishes the current rating of a complete conductor.
