Measure the bag’s full outside height, width, and depth—including wheels, handles, pockets, and other protrusions—then compare each dimension with the rules for the airline operating your flight. If the airline also lists a combined linear-inch limit, check that total too. For a close call, try the airport bag sizer.
How to measure a carry-on bag
- Prepare the bag. Empty it, stand it upright on a flat floor, and close the expansion zipper for a baseline measurement. Leave fixed pockets, wheel housings, handles, and trim in place. A rigid tape measure can be easier to hold against a curved shell than a soft tailor’s tape.
- Measure height. Measure from the floor to the bag’s highest outside point. Include wheels and handle housing; include a handle that does not retract or fold flat.
- Measure width. Measure across the widest outside point, including side handles, pockets, and trim.
- Measure depth. Measure front to back at the thickest point, including wheel housings and front pockets. If you plan to travel with the expansion zipper open, measure the bag in that configuration too.
- Record the labeled dimensions. Write them as height × width × depth, with units. Check the airline’s stated dimension order before comparing: Air Canada, for example, lists its measurements as depth × width × height.
- Check the right rule. Look up the operating airline’s official baggage page for your flight and fare. Compare each dimension separately, then add them if the airline publishes a combined limit. Use an airport sizer when available.
Measure the bag as you expect to take it to the gate. A soft-sided bag can bulge when packed, and an expanded bag may exceed its closed measurement.

Do carry-on measurements include wheels and handles?
Yes. The whole outside of the bag counts, not just the fabric or hard shell. Delta, Air Canada, JetBlue, and American explicitly include wheels and handles in their published dimensions. Include fixed pockets, protruding trim, and wheel housings as well; if a non-retracting handle sticks out, measure to its highest point.
How do I know whether my carry-on fits?
A bag meets a published size rule only if its outside dimensions fit the applicable airline’s limits. Check both the individual caps and any combined limit: passing one test does not guarantee passing the other. The FAA’s Carry-On Baggage Tips page defines 45 linear inches as the sum of height, width, and depth, says most airlines use that maximum, and directs passengers to check their airline’s guidance. It does not set one universal carry-on size.

For example, Delta’s official carry-on page lists a maximum of 22 × 14 × 9 inches and 45 linear inches (114 cm), including handles and wheels. A bag could meet the total while exceeding one side’s individual cap, so check both. These dimensions are examples, not rules for every carrier.

What to do if your bag is close to the limit
- Recheck the measurement at the widest point and make sure you included protrusions and the bag’s actual packed shape.
- Confirm whether the airline’s dimensions are listed as height, width, and depth or in another order, and compare the units consistently.
- Try the airport sizer if available. American says its carry-on must fit the sizer; Air Canada describes automated baggage sizers.
- Check which carrier operates each flight. Air Canada notes that a partner airline’s policy may apply when that airline operates the flight.
The FAA advises travelers to check airline guidance before packing: “Check with your airline before packing to determine its carry-on guidelines regarding the number of items you may carry on and the maximum size of those items. Some airline rules are stricter than posted regulations.” A tape measurement can help you assess the published dimensions, but it cannot guarantee acceptance in every aircraft or boarding situation.
