There is no single Microsoft feature called “AI transaction matching” that works the same way across its finance products. In Business Central, Copilot suggests additional bank matches after standard automatic matching. In Excel, the Financial Reconciliation agent compares two data sets and proposes matching keys. Dynamics 365 Finance uses imported bank statements and configured matching rules, with a different workflow when Modern bank reconciliation is enabled.
Choose the workflow that matches your data
| Product and data | How matching works | How you review results |
|---|---|---|
| Business Central bank reconciliation | Standard automatic matching runs first; Copilot suggests matches for remaining statement lines using dates, amounts, and descriptions. It can propose one statement line against several ledger entries. | Review each proposal and keep or discard it; proposals are not saved immediately. |
| Financial Reconciliation agent in Excel | AI-aided analysis suggests mapping and monetary keys for two data sets. Results can include one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many matches. | Inspect perfect, potential, and unmatched classifications, with optional AI summary and troubleshooting guidance. |
| Dynamics 365 Finance advanced bank reconciliation | Imported electronic statements are reconciled with Finance transactions using configured matching rules and rule sets. | Rules can run sequentially; ambiguous amount matches can be routed for manual matching. |
These are separate product workflows, not interchangeable modes of one feature. Use Business Central for its bank-account reconciliation flow, Excel’s agent when comparing two tabular data sets, and Finance advanced bank reconciliation for statement imports and rule-based matching.

How do I reconcile bank accounts with Copilot in Business Central?
Copilot supplements the ordinary Match Automatically operation; it does not replace it. Standard automatic matching runs first, and Copilot then examines the transactions that remain unmatched. Microsoft says it considers dates, amounts, and descriptions. One documented use is reconciling a single lump-sum bank payment against several separately registered ledger entries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRun matching and review the proposals
- Open the Bank Account Reconciliations list and start a reconciliation, or open a new or existing reconciliation card.
- Import the bank statement file if the bank account is not linked to an online account.
- Run Match Automatically first, then use Copilot to generate proposals for the remaining unmatched transactions.
- Review the suggestions. They are not saved until you choose to keep them. Discard individual proposals or discard all; keeping the remaining proposals applies them to the reconciliation.
- If the reconciliation is fully applied, automatic posting is available as an option.
An administrator must activate the Bank account reconciliation capability. Microsoft labels the feature preview in its documentation. It is validated and supported only in specific languages; using another language may not work as intended. See Microsoft’s Business Central Copilot reconciliation documentation for applicable setup and release details.

Check the release-dependent transaction limit
Microsoft documents an approximate limit based on the relevant open ledger-entry count: around 1,000 for 2025 release wave 1 and earlier, and around 3,000 for 2025 release wave 2 and later. The actual limit varies with description length, so confirm the documentation for your Business Central release rather than treating either figure as an exact fixed cap.
How do I match transactions in Excel?
The Financial Reconciliation agent compares two data sets represented as tables in one or two Excel worksheets. It analyzes their structures and suggests reconciliation vectors, including mapping keys and monetary keys. You can accept or edit the suggestions, regenerate them, or choose keys yourself. Optional reference columns can help people review results, but they do not determine matching.

Read the result categories
- Perfectly matched: rows the agent classifies as matching.
- Potentially matched: possible relationships that may be one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, or many-to-many and merit review.
- Unmatched: rows without a corresponding match in the other data set.
The agent can also produce a generative-AI summary and offer troubleshooting guidance for unmatched or potentially matched rows. Treat the summary as a review aid; inspect the underlying rows when a result affects a financial decision. Microsoft’s Financial Reconciliation agent documentation describes the workflow.

What partial matching means
Partial matching in this agent is not unrestricted fuzzy or semantic matching. It uses exact substring matching on a selected pair of mapping keys: one string must appear within a larger string. Microsoft says potential matches are evaluated one-on-one to help reduce false-positive classifications. See Microsoft’s partial-matching documentation for the feature’s definition.

How can I automate bank reconciliation in Dynamics 365 Finance?
Finance advanced bank reconciliation imports electronic bank statements and compares them with Finance bank transactions using matching rules. A rule set can run rules sequentially, and the process can be configured to run after statement import or started on demand.
Design rules for ambiguity, not just speed
By default, a matching rule selects the first transaction that meets its criteria. If multiple documents meet the amount criteria, an administrator can enable a parameter that requires manual matching. This is important when amounts alone do not uniquely identify a transaction: a rule that accepts the first eligible item can create a match that needs correction.

Confirm whether Modern bank reconciliation is enabled before following procedural instructions. It changes the available workflow and adds capabilities; some older instructions apply only when it is turned off. Microsoft’s advanced bank reconciliation documentation covers the feature-state distinction and matching-rule setup.
Which approach should you use?
- Choose Business Central Copilot when you are reconciling a Business Central bank statement and want suggestions for items standard automatching left open.
- Choose the Excel agent when the task is comparing two tabular data sets, rather than completing the Business Central bank reconciliation workflow.
- Choose Finance advanced bank reconciliation when the process is built around imported bank statements and configurable matching rules in Dynamics 365 Finance.
Microsoft’s documentation describes these workflows but does not establish a shared feature or a quantitative accuracy or time-saving advantage across them. Product version, feature state, language, and data volume can change which steps apply.
