How to Match OBS Frame Rate to Pre-Recorded Videos for YouTube Live

For a YouTube Live stream built around a pre-recorded video, set OBS’s output frame rate to the video’s actual frame rate when practical. In OBS, go to Settings > Video > Common FPS Value. Matching is a sensible default for preserving the source’s motion cadence—not a special YouTube Live rule. YouTube’s published live limit is up to 60 fps; choose a lower rate if your computer cannot stream reliably at 60.

Why match OBS FPS to the video?

Frame rate, measured in frames per second (fps), describes how many images appear each second. Matching OBS output to the prerecorded file’s actual rate is the clearest starting point for keeping its original cadence. YouTube’s upload guidance says video should be encoded and uploaded at the rate at which it was recorded, and lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps as common rates. That guidance concerns uploads; applying it to a live OBS media source is a practical inference, not an explicit YouTube Live requirement. YouTube’s upload encoding settings

YouTube Live allows an encoder frame rate of up to 60 fps. That is a ceiling, not a reason to set every stream to 60: a higher output rate does not create source detail that is not present in the file. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Set the OBS output frame rate

  1. Check the file’s actual frame rate. Read it in the video’s media information or in the editing/export workflow that produced it. Do not infer frame rate from resolution; a 1080p file, for example, is not necessarily 30 fps.
  2. Open OBS’s video settings. In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Video, then find Common FPS Value. OBS describes this as the output FPS setting and says it should match the desired output rate. OBS Studio Overview Guide
  3. Choose the source rate when it suits the stream. Select the matching common value if available. If the file uses a less common or fractional rate, choose the closest practical setting and check the result rather than assuming a perfect match.
  4. Keep resolution decisions separate. OBS’s Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution are not frame-rate controls. Set the output resolution for the video and intended broadcast; changing resolution does not set FPS.
  5. Test the actual program before relying on it. Use the same clip, audio, transitions, and representative movement you expect to stream. Check for judder, dropped frames, audio-sync problems, and YouTube stream-health warnings. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement, then monitoring stream health during the broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Should OBS be 30 or 60 fps?

Choice When it makes sense What to weigh
Match the source, such as 24, 25, or 30 fps The prerecorded video uses that rate and the computer handles the stream steadily. Preserves the intended source cadence without choosing a higher rate just because YouTube permits it.
60 fps The source is 60 fps and the computer and upload connection can sustain the chosen output settings. Can show smoother motion, but OBS may have more rendering and encoding work than at 30 fps.
30 fps instead of 60 60 fps produces instability or the computer cannot keep up. OBS recommends trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. A 30 fps output changes cadence for 60 fps source material, so test the actual video. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting

For a playlist with mixed frame rates, pick the rate that best serves the dominant or most important material, then test transitions between clips. There is no single universally correct OBS rate established for every mixed-rate playlist.

Check bitrate and encoder settings too

Frame rate is only one part of a stable stream. YouTube’s current live guidance calls for CBR bitrate encoding for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency (not over 4 seconds), and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs. It automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes the stream for viewers. Follow the current YouTube settings for your ingest protocol, resolution, and codec. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Output Codec Minimum ingest bitrate Recommended ingest bitrate

1080p30 AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 10 Mbps

These are YouTube’s listed ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or a substitute for testing available upload capacity and stream health. YouTube advises running a speed test and testing the stream. The table also shows why matching source FPS does not settle the bandwidth question: recommended bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Troubleshoot a test stream

  • Motion looks uneven: Confirm the source’s actual rate and the OBS Common FPS Value. Test the clip at the matching rate; if you intentionally selected a different rate, judge the result with representative movement.
  • OBS drops frames or struggles to render or encode: Reduce output FPS from 60 to 30 as OBS recommends, then test again. Consider whether the selected resolution and bitrate are also sustainable.
  • YouTube reports stream-health or connection warnings: Check upload capacity against the selected resolution, FPS, and codec; run a speed test and repeat a representative stream test. Monitor YouTube’s live stream health rather than treating a configured bitrate as proof of a stable connection.
  • Audio and picture do not stay in sync: Test the same audio and transitions planned for the live program and inspect synchronization during playback. The FPS setting alone does not diagnose every audio-sync cause.
  • A playlist switches between different rates: Test at least one transition between the rates in the playlist. If the result is poor, reconsider which rate best serves the most important material.
