A displayed local time or session elapsed time is not interchangeable with a UTC timestamp.
What “one clock” means for timing and photos
A useful join compares moments on the same time basis, not strings that happen to look alike. OpenF1 documents its date values as UTC date and time in ISO 8601 format. Parse any stated offset and normalize the instant to UTC before comparing it with image metadata. Do not compare local wall-clock values as if they were UTC.

Event identity matters as much as time. OpenF1 session data includes meeting_key and session_key; keep those with the timestamp so a close time from another session cannot be mistaken for a match. OpenF1 describes itself as unofficial and unaffiliated with Formula 1 companies. Its documentation describes historical data from 2023 onward as freely available without authentication and real-time access as subscription-based; access terms can change. See the OpenF1 documentation.

Which photo timestamp should you use?
Use the moment the image content was captured, not when a file was created, copied, exported, or modified. The IPTC Photo Metadata Standard 2023.1 defines Date Created as the date, and optionally the time, “the content of the image was created rather than the date of the creation of the digital representation.” It recommends that software surface EXIF DateTimeOriginal and OffsetTimeOriginal to help enter that information.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A capture-time field is still only as trustworthy as the clock and metadata that produced it. An offset helps interpret a recorded time; it does not prove the camera clock was accurate. IPTC also defines an Event Identifier field, which can be useful alongside Date Created when organizing images. Consult the IPTC Photo Metadata Standard 2023.1.
A practical workflow for aligning a session
- Identify the timing record. Record the event or meeting and the specific session. With OpenF1, retain
meeting_key,session_key, and the UTCdatevalue when available. - Read the image’s capture metadata. Start with EXIF
DateTimeOriginaland its offset, if present. Do not substitute a filesystem creation or modification date for the exposure time. Where useful, preserve the capture time as IPTC Date Created and associate an Event Identifier. - Normalize to UTC. Parse explicit offsets correctly and convert timestamps to UTC instants. If a photo time has no offset, treat its timezone as unknown until you establish it; do not silently assume either the venue’s timezone or the computer’s current timezone.
- Estimate camera-clock error. Compare a photo with a known reference event or a clearly identifiable moment in the session. Apply a correction only when its basis is documented. If the reference is ambiguous, flag the proposed match for review rather than presenting it as frame-accurate.
- Join on time and identity. Match within a tolerance chosen for the timing feed’s granularity and the camera clock’s known uncertainty, while requiring the correct event and session. There is no universal tolerance established for every feed or camera.
- Keep the correction auditable. Retain original EXIF/IPTC values and record the normalized or corrected timestamp, offset interpretation, correction method, and reference used. If you edit embedded metadata, keep an untouched original or a documented sidecar or version history.
- Validate across the session. Check sample matches near the beginning, middle, and end, especially if the camera may have been reset or its clock may have changed. This is a practical check, not a claim about a particular drift rate.
Elapsed session time is not a UTC timestamp
A timing display may show elapsed or remaining session time. That is a relative clock, not an absolute instant. To join a record that contains only elapsed time to a photo’s capture timestamp, you need a reliable session start or other reference mapping. The sources cited here do not establish one universal mapping for every timing feed, app, or camera, so document the reference you use and its uncertainty.

Apple’s AVFoundation documentation offers a specific implementation example: AVCapturePhoto.timestamp is the capture time synchronized to the masterClock of its connected AVCaptureSession. That describes Apple’s capture API clock domain; it does not establish that every camera’s stored EXIF time is synchronized to UTC or to F1 timing. See Apple’s AVFoundation timestamp documentation.
Keep timing and image rights in view
Check the terms for the particular timing feed and the rights attached to the photographs before republishing material. A 2024 FIA-hosted Austrian Grand Prix race-history chart carries a notice restricting reproduction, storage in a retrieval system, or transmission of its data without prior permission, subject to specified exceptions. That notice applies to that document; it is not a universal statement about all F1 timing data, image rights, or jurisdictions. Read the FIA race-history chart and its reuse notice.
