The correct replacement battery is the one specified by the device—not merely one that fits the compartment. Copy the complete battery code from the manual or compartment, then verify its format, chemistry, voltage, polarity and, for multi-cell devices, the instructions for using cells together.
A battery with the same shape can still have a different voltage, chemistry, diameter, thickness or discharge behavior. Use the device manufacturer’s specification as the authority, especially for coin cells and rechargeable substitutions.

Start with the device’s exact specification
Look in the user manual, on a label inside the battery compartment, or on the device manufacturer’s support page. Record the complete code exactly as printed: for example, AAA, LR6, R03 or CR2032. A description such as “small round battery” or “AA-size battery” is not precise enough for a safe replacement.

- Format and model: cylindrical AA, AAA, C or D; a coin cell such as CR2032; or a proprietary pack.
- Chemistry: alkaline, zinc-carbon, lithium manganese dioxide, nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), or another type permitted by the device.
- Voltage: the nominal voltage the circuit expects.
- Polarity and configuration: which end is positive, and whether cells must be installed as a matched set.
Panasonic advises using the size listed in a device manual for coin cells, and Energizer gives the same model-specific advice for its CR2032. Physical fit alone does not prove electrical compatibility.

Decode the common size labels
AA, AAA, C and D are familiar market names. IEC codes identify the chemistry and size more explicitly. For common primary cells, Panasonic lists the following crosswalk:
| Familiar label | Common IEC alkaline code | Common IEC zinc-carbon code | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAA | LR03 | R03 | Whether the device permits alkaline, zinc-carbon or rechargeable cells |
| AA | LR6 | R6 | The specified chemistry and voltage, not only the diameter and length |
| C | LR14 | R14 | The exact cell called for in the manual |
| D | LR20 | R20 | Chemistry, voltage and the device’s current demand |
These are equivalent size designations across standards, not a universal permission to substitute one chemistry for another. Panasonic’s dry-battery FAQ gives an example of the same 10.5 mm by 44.5 mm cell being labeled LR03 under IEC or AAA under ANSI, depending on the market and standard. When shopping, search for both labels if necessary, then confirm the chemistry required by your device.
Why a size name is not a complete specification
The letters and numbers can identify the format while leaving important electrical differences unresolved. An AA-shaped cell might be alkaline, zinc-carbon or rechargeable NiMH. A device designed for one of those types may not operate correctly—or may have reduced runtime—with another. The manual’s wording takes precedence over a retailer’s category label.

Check chemistry and voltage before buying
Nominal voltage is a key reason not to replace a primary cell with a rechargeable one without checking the instructions. Energizer’s AAA alkaline datasheet (form LR03EU0120, a 2020-era document) lists 1.5 V nominal. Panasonic states that its eneloop rechargeable cells are 1.2 V nominal. Their dimensions follow IEC standards for equivalent dry-cell sizes, but matching dimensions do not establish that a particular device supports NiMH chemistry or its lower nominal voltage.
| Chemistry | Typical example from the cited guidance | Nominal voltage stated by the manufacturer | Use the information for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alkaline | AAA/LR03 primary cell | 1.5 V | Confirming the voltage of that specified product type |
| Rechargeable NiMH | eneloop rechargeable cell | 1.2 V | Checking whether the device accepts rechargeable cells before substituting |
| Lithium manganese dioxide coin cell | CR2032 | 3 V | Matching the exact coin-cell model named by the device |
Do not infer runtime, capacity or current capability from size alone. Those properties vary with the device’s load, discharge conditions, temperature, battery condition and the voltage at which the device shuts down.
Alkaline versus manganese: a guideline, not a guarantee
Panasonic describes alkaline cells as suitable for higher-current uses such as camera flashes and radio-controlled cars. It describes manganese cells as suitable for lower-current devices such as remote controls and clocks. This is a manufacturer rule of thumb, not a promise of a particular runtime. Device design, operating temperature, pulse loads and battery condition can change the result, so follow the device’s stated recommendation whenever one is available.
Read coin-cell codes character by character
Coin cells require the complete model code because small changes in diameter or thickness affect both fit and electrical contact. Panasonic explains the CR2032 designation as follows:

- C: lithium manganese dioxide chemistry.
- R: round shape.
- 20: approximately 20 mm diameter.
- 32: approximately 3.2 mm thickness (height).
Energizer lists CR2032 as a 3 V lithium coin cell and warns that coin batteries are not interchangeable simply because one can be made to fit. Use the designation specified by the device manufacturer.
Why CR2032, CR2025 and CR2016 are not automatic substitutes
CR2032, CR2025 and CR2016 share a 20 mm diameter but have different thicknesses: about 3.2 mm, 2.5 mm and 1.6 mm respectively. A thinner cell can fail to press firmly against the contacts; a thicker cell can prevent the holder from closing or damage it. Panasonic notes that a CR2025 may be too thick for a compartment designed for CR2016. It also notes that a CR1616 may be too small to make reliable contact in a holder designed for CR2016, even though both names include “16” for thickness.
Do not stack coin cells, bend contacts or add improvised spacers to force a substitute. If the printed code is missing or unreadable, identify the device model and consult its manual or manufacturer rather than guessing from the old cell’s appearance.
Use this step-by-step matching procedure
- Power down and inspect safely. Turn off the device and disconnect external power where applicable. Photograph or write down the existing cell’s code before removing it.
- Find the authoritative specification. Check the manual, the compartment label and the manufacturer’s support information. Prefer a complete model code over a broad description such as “button battery.”
- Copy the code exactly. Preserve every letter and number, including prefixes such as
LR,RorCR. For a multi-cell device, note the number of cells required. - Classify the format. Decide whether it is a cylindrical cell, coin/button cell or specialty pack. For a coin cell, record diameter and thickness from the model code; for a cylindrical cell, verify the standard size designation.
- Confirm chemistry. Check whether the specification calls for alkaline, zinc-carbon, lithium, NiMH or another type. Do not treat a familiar size label as proof of chemistry.
- Confirm voltage. Compare the device requirement with the battery’s nominal voltage. In particular, verify permission before replacing a 1.5 V alkaline cell with a 1.2 V rechargeable cell.
- Check polarity and contacts. Match the positive and negative marks in the compartment. Inspect for corrosion, bent contacts or debris that could cause intermittent operation.
- Install cells as instructed. If the device uses multiple cells, use the same brand, type and performance rating, and follow the package and device instructions. Do not mix old and new cells or different chemistries.
- Test the device. Confirm normal operation before closing the compartment permanently or reinstalling covers. If it does not work, remove the cell and troubleshoot rather than trying a larger or higher-voltage substitute.
What to do when the code is missing
Start with the device model number, not with a visual comparison. Search the printed model in the manual or manufacturer support documentation and look for a section titled “battery,” “power,” or “replacement.” If the manual is unavailable, contact the manufacturer with the model and revision information.
Measurements can help identify a cell, but they should confirm—not replace—the manufacturer’s specification. A measurement may not reveal chemistry, nominal voltage, terminal style or whether the device’s charging circuit supports a rechargeable cell. Never assume that a battery is safe because it slides into the holder.
Compare candidate listings before you buy
Retail listings often group several products under one shopping term, such as “AA batteries,” “button batteries” or “lithium coin cells.” Treat that category as a starting point only. Compare each candidate on four axes: exact model code, physical dimensions and contact style, chemistry and nominal voltage, and the device’s intended load. A listing that says “fits AA devices” may include LR6 alkaline and R6 zinc-carbon products together, while a listing for “20 mm coin cells” may contain CR2016, CR2025 and CR2032 cells with different heights.
Read the package or technical specification rather than relying on a product photograph. Confirm that the code printed on the individual cell matches the device requirement, especially when buying multipacks. If a product page offers several size or chemistry choices, select the exact one before placing the order. Product availability and labeling can vary by market, so the device manual remains the controlling specification.

There is no universal compatibility list covering every device. A manufacturer’s statement that two cells share a format does not override a particular device’s voltage, contact, charging or cutoff requirements. If the listing omits chemistry, voltage or dimensions, choose a better-documented product or ask the device manufacturer.
Specialty packs and rechargeable devices
Some equipment uses a proprietary battery pack rather than a replaceable AA, AAA or coin cell. Match the complete pack part number, connector or terminal arrangement, voltage and any charging instructions. Do not substitute a group of loose cells merely because the pack has a similar shape. The device’s charging circuit may be designed for one chemistry and unsafe for another.
For a device that explicitly permits rechargeable cells, use the rechargeable type and charger specified by its manufacturer. A cylindrical rechargeable cell can follow the same external size standard as an alkaline cell while still having a different nominal voltage. Conversely, a device that accepts only primary cells should not be connected to a charger or fitted with rechargeable cells unless its instructions expressly allow that use.
Install and use batteries safely
Polarity and mixed-cell risks
Insert every cell according to the plus and minus marks. In a series-powered device, reversed or mismatched cells can cause leakage, poor operation or excessive stress. Panasonic’s consumer guidance says to use the same brand, type and performance rating when cells are used together. Replace the entire set when the device requires a matched group, rather than combining a fresh cell with a partially used one.
Coin-cell child safety
Keep loose coin cells and devices containing them away from children. Energizer warns that swallowing a coin battery can cause serious injury or death. Keep unused cells in their original packaging, do not leave them on a work surface, and follow the package’s handling, storage and disposal instructions. Tape or otherwise secure a removed cell before disposal if the local waste authority or package instructions call for that precaution.

Store batteries in a cool, dry place, protected from metal objects that could bridge the terminals. Do not carry loose cells with keys, coins or tools. Do not burn, crush, puncture or recharge a cell unless it is specifically labeled as rechargeable and the device and charger are designed for it. Dispose of used batteries through the collection method required in your location; package instructions and local rules take precedence.
Troubleshoot a replacement that does not work
The device is completely dead
- Recheck the full model code and polarity orientation.
- Verify that the battery is new and has not been stored improperly.
- Inspect contacts for corrosion, dirt or a contact tab left in place from shipping.
- Confirm that a 1.2 V rechargeable cell was not substituted where the device specifies a 1.5 V primary cell.
The cell fits but the cover will not close
Remove it immediately and compare its dimensions with the specified model. This is common when a thicker coin cell is substituted for a thinner one. Do not press the cover down or modify the holder.

The device works intermittently
Intermittent operation can result from poor contact, a cell that is too small, corrosion or a mismatched set. Check the holder’s spring tension and contact surfaces, then reinstall the exact specified model. If the compartment is damaged, have the device serviced instead of wedging the battery in place.
The device reports low battery early
A lower-voltage chemistry can trigger a low-battery threshold sooner even when the cell is physically compatible. Check the device’s permitted chemistries and nominal voltage. Also account for temperature and the device’s cutoff voltage; battery size does not predict usable runtime by itself.

A quick decision checklist
- Do I have the exact code from the manual or compartment?
- Does the replacement have the same format, diameter, thickness and contact style?
- Is its chemistry explicitly permitted?
- Does its nominal voltage match the device requirement?
- Are polarity marks clear and unobstructed?
- If several cells are used, are they the same brand, type and performance rating?
- For a coin cell, is the model exact rather than merely similar?
- Have I followed the package’s child-safety, storage and disposal instructions?
If any answer is unknown, stop and obtain the device manufacturer’s specification. A correctly fitting battery is only a starting point; the complete code, chemistry, voltage and installation instructions determine whether it is the right one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does my device take?
Read the complete code in the manual or battery compartment, then match its format, chemistry, nominal voltage and polarity. Do not rely on appearance or a broad label such as “AA-size.”
How do I know what size battery I need?
Copy the model exactly. Common crosswalks include AAA/LR03, AA/LR6, C/LR14 and D/LR20 for alkaline cells, but verify the chemistry and voltage required by the device.
Is LR03 the same as AAA?
They can describe the same 10.5 mm by 44.5 mm format under different standards: LR03 is an IEC alkaline code and AAA is a common market or ANSI designation. Confirm that alkaline chemistry is permitted before buying.
Can I use a CR2025 instead of a CR2032?
Not automatically. Both are about 20 mm in diameter, but CR2025 is about 2.5 mm thick and CR2032 about 3.2 mm. The thinner cell may not contact reliably, and the holder is designed for the exact model specified by the device.

Can I use a CR2016 in a CR2025 or CR2032 device?
Only if the device manufacturer expressly permits it. Different thicknesses can leave a gap, prevent reliable contact or damage the holder. Panasonic recommends the exact coin-cell model listed in the manual.
Can I replace a 1.5 V alkaline battery with a 1.2 V rechargeable?
Only when the device instructions allow rechargeable NiMH cells. Panasonic states eneloop cells are 1.2 V nominal, while Energizer lists its AAA alkaline at 1.5 V nominal; identical dimensions do not make the chemistries interchangeable.
Why does a battery fit but the device still fail?
Check the exact code, polarity, contact cleanliness and cell condition. A wrong chemistry or voltage, a cell that is too small, corrosion or a mixed set can cause failure or intermittent operation.
How should batteries be used in a multi-cell device?
Follow the device and package instructions, use the same brand, type and performance rating, and do not mix old and new cells or different chemistries. Install every cell according to the polarity marks.
How should I handle a loose coin cell?
Keep it away from children, leave unused cells in their packaging, and follow package and local disposal instructions. Energizer warns that swallowing a coin battery can cause serious injury or death.
The Bottom Line
Match the battery to the device’s complete specification, not just its shape. Verify the exact model, chemistry, nominal voltage, dimensions, polarity and multi-cell instructions; for coin cells, never assume that a nearby number is an acceptable substitute.
