Identify whether each clip is LogC3 or LogC4, match the camera gamut and recording type, and never expect one LUT or plugin to fix mismatched input encodings. Film Lab can add a consistent film-emulation layer to normalized RGB images, but it does not replace camera-specific color management.
What a cross-camera match actually requires
A shared look file only behaves consistently when its input is consistent. Log footage is intentionally low-contrast and desaturated for grading; viewed directly on a normal display, it is not supposed to resemble the finished image. Before comparing cameras, convert each source from its recorded log or raw encoding into the working space expected by the look. Then compare shots through the same viewing transform on a calibrated, suitably managed display.

Matching is not the same as making every camera identical. Exposure, white balance, lighting spectrum, lens transmission, filtration, sensor response, compression, and the grade applied to an individual shot all remain visible after technical normalization. The goal is a coherent response to the creative treatment, not a claim that two sensors have the same spectral characteristics.

ARRI separates its older LogC3/AWG3 workflow from the REVEAL color science used by newer cameras. A LogC3 show LUT should therefore be treated as a LogC3 asset, not as a universal ARRI look. ARRI’s Color FAQ recommends completely redesigning or visually matching a LogC3 show LUT for REVEAL cameras such as the ALEXA 35 and newer models.

Inventory the footage before opening Film Lab
Create a source manifest for every camera, card, and recording format. Do this before applying a look so that an incorrect input transform does not get mistaken for a creative mismatch.
Record these fields for every clip
- Camera model and firmware or project metadata, when available.
- Color encoding: LogC3, LogC4, another manufacturer log curve, or a raw sensor format.
- Color gamut or camera primaries, such as AWG3 or AWG4 where applicable.
- Recording type: ARRIRAW, Apple ProRes, or the third-party camera’s raw or mezzanine codec.
- Any in-camera look, LUT, CDL, exposure offset, white-balance setting, or baked transform.
- Frame rate, shutter, ISO or EI, and the intended delivery standard.
- Whether the clip is an original camera file, an offline transcode, or a VFX render.
Metadata is useful but not infallible. Confirm the interpretation against a known test frame or the camera report, particularly when editorial has transcoded the material or when a LUT was embedded during recording.
LogC3 and LogC4 are different generations
| Asset or camera family | Expected encoding and gamut | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Older ALEXA and AMIRA workflows | LogC3 with AWG3 | Use LogC3-compatible input transforms and ALF2-era creative assets. Do not feed the material to a LogC4 look without an explicit, tested conversion. |
| ALEXA 35, ALEXA 35 Xtreme, and ALEXA 265 families | LogC4 with AWG4 under REVEAL color science | Use LogC4-compatible input transforms and ALF4-era creative assets. A legacy LogC3 show LUT normally needs redesign or visual matching. |
| Third-party cameras | Manufacturer-specific log, gamut, or raw encoding | Choose that manufacturer’s input transform in ACES or the grading application’s color-management system. There is no single ARRI transform that correctly covers every third-party format. |
ARRI’s ARRIRAW SDK can develop supported older ALEXA and AMIRA LogC3 ARRIRAW material to LogC4 for a REVEAL workflow. That route is specific to supported ARRIRAW files. ARRI states that the conversion cannot be performed on Apple ProRes footage, so a ProRes recording should not be presented as if it can be retroactively converted through the same SDK path.
Choose one normalization strategy
Pick a pipeline for the project and document it. Switching between unmanaged LUT stacks and different color-management systems from shot to shot is a common reason a look appears to change.

ARRI and REVEAL processing
Use ARRI’s generation-appropriate tools when the project is primarily ALEXA or AMIRA material and the finishing team needs an ARRI-native path. Keep LogC3 and LogC4 assets separate in bins, node graphs, or presets. If older LogC3 ARRIRAW must enter a LogC4/REVEAL show, develop it through the supported ARRIRAW route before applying a LogC4 creative treatment. ProRes clips require a different, documented transform.
ACES
ACES provides a vendor-neutral common working framework. ARRI describes it as simplifying the process of matching images from different sources. In an ACES workflow, each camera receives its appropriate input transform into the ACES scene-referred working space, the creative look is applied there or at the designated look stage, and the output transform is selected for the final display standard.
ACES does not automatically erase differences in lighting, lenses, exposure, or sensors. It makes the technical interpretation explicit so that the creative grade is not compensating for an incorrectly decoded source.

DaVinci Resolve, Baselight, and Nuke can each be configured with camera-specific input transforms and a defined working space. The exact menu labels vary by application and version, so write down the project’s input, timeline or working space, and output settings rather than relying on an undocumented default. ARRI’s ALF4 workflow guideline uses Resolve 18.6.1 for its screenshots; that is a version-specific example from the 2025 guideline, not a guarantee that every later release presents identical controls.

Step-by-step matching workflow
- Preserve the camera originals. Keep ARRIRAW, ProRes, and third-party originals available. Do not overwrite metadata or bake a LUT into the only copy.
- Build a camera map. Group clips by LogC generation, gamut, raw or codec type, and any baked look. Give each group a clear label in the media pool.
- Set the project output first. Decide whether the master is SDR or HDR and identify its target color space and display transform. A look judged through an SDR transform will not necessarily retain the same contrast or saturation through an HDR transform.
- Assign the correct input transform. Decode LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4, or the third-party camera’s log/raw format into the chosen working space. For raw media, set the decoder’s white balance and exposure interpretation before creative grading.
- Neutralize obvious technical differences. Balance exposure, white balance, black level, and lens or filter anomalies on representative shots. Use a neutral chart or gray reference when one was captured, but do not force every shot to a sterile neutral if the cinematography intentionally used a color bias.
- Choose a reference frame. Select a well-exposed shot with representative skin, neutral production design, and the lighting style that dominates the project. Compare other cameras against this reference through the same output transform.
- Apply the creative look in the working space. Use the generation-matched ALF2 or ALF4 treatment, an ACES-compatible look, or a custom grade. Keep technical input conversion before the look and the display render transform after it.
- Match camera groups, then individual shots. First correct systematic differences between cameras. Then refine exposure, color balance, and local contrast shot by shot. Do not create a separate look for every angle unless the photography intentionally changes.
- Check motion and texture separately. Grain, halation, gate weave, denoise, blur, shapes, and other spatial effects should remain separate from a reusable creative 3D LUT. ARRI’s workflow guidance specifically advises excluding these spatial tools from the creative LUT.
- Review under the delivery transform. Toggle through the actual SDR or HDR output used for finishing and inspect faces, saturated production colors, highlights, and near-black detail. Export stills or a short test reel for review on the intended monitoring chain.
- Document the handoff. Record input transforms, working space, look version, output transform, node order, and any shot-specific offsets so editorial, VFX, and the final DI can reproduce the image.
Keep the creative look separate from display rendering
ARRI’s ALF4 approach distinguishes a creative Log-to-Log color management transform from the display-rendering or output decision. This separation matters when one creative treatment must serve multiple deliverables. You can preserve the same scene-referred creative intent while selecting an SDR or HDR output transform appropriate to the master.
Combining the look and display conversion into one opaque LUT makes reuse harder. A LUT built for one display target may clip highlights, alter contrast, or produce a different saturation balance when placed in another pipeline. Store the creative treatment and the display render as identifiable, separately bypassable stages.
Spatial operations cannot be faithfully embedded in a conventional creative 3D LUT. Keep masks, windows, blur, denoise, grain, halation, and gate weave as nodes or plugin controls after the base color treatment, with shot-level controls where needed. This also makes it possible to disable texture for VFX plates or editorial viewing without rebuilding the color look.
Using ARRI Film Lab with mixed-camera material
Film Lab is an optional film-character layer, not a source decoder. ARRI says it processes RGB images from ARRI and third-party cameras and supports LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4, and ACES 2.0. The practical sequence is to normalize each camera first, then place Film Lab where its expected RGB encoding and the project’s working-space design agree.

Film Lab capabilities relevant to a mixed-camera project
| Control or input | What it provides | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| LogC3/AWG3 support | Film Lab can receive normalized older-generation ARRI material in the supported encoding. | It does not identify an incorrectly tagged LogC3 clip or convert arbitrary third-party log footage automatically. |
| LogC4/AWG4 support | It can receive normalized REVEAL-generation material in the supported encoding. | It does not make a LogC3 show LUT appropriate for a LogC4 camera. |
| ACES 2.0 support | It can be incorporated into an ACES-based project when the node or effect placement follows the application’s ACES design. | ACES still requires the correct input transform for every camera. |
| Negative-stock grain references | Selectable references include 50D, 200T, and 500T. | These are emulation choices, not measurements of a camera’s noise or a performance guarantee. |
| Print, reversal, and bleach-bypass characteristics | Provides different film-style color responses for the creative treatment. | It cannot correct exposure, white balance, or a mismatched camera gamut by itself. |
| Halation and gate weave | Adds optional film-associated optical and movement characteristics. | These are spatial or texture effects that should remain adjustable outside a reusable creative LUT. |
ARRI lists Film Lab as a paid, license-based OpenFX plugin available through RE:Vision Effects, with weekly, monthly, annual, and permanent individual licenses. Resolve, Baselight, and Nuke are among the grading environments ARRI identifies as compatible. Availability, supported versions, and license terms can change, so verify the current product page and host-application requirements when purchasing.
Where to place Film Lab
There is no single correct placement for every project because the plugin’s result depends on its declared input and the color-management design. In a scene-referred pipeline, follow the Film Lab documentation for the supported ACES or LogC mode and keep the output transform distinct. In a display-referred pipeline, ensure the plugin is receiving the encoding it expects rather than a display-rendered image that has already had contrast and gamut mapping applied.
Use one Film Lab setup for the project’s common treatment, then expose only the controls that genuinely need shot variation. A 50D-style grain choice, for example, should be a creative decision tied to the intended daylight-film character, not a substitute for balancing a daylight and tungsten camera.

Workflow comparison
| Approach | Best fit | Strength | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARRI generation-matched workflow | Projects dominated by ALEXA or AMIRA footage | Clear LogC3 versus LogC4 asset discipline and direct ARRI guidance | ARRIRAW-to-LogC4 development is not available for Apple ProRes, and LogC3 show LUTs need redesign for REVEAL cameras |
| ACES | Mixed ARRI, third-party, VFX, and multi-vendor finishing | Common scene-referred framework with explicit camera input and output transforms | Correct input transforms and exposure or white-balance decisions are still required |
| Application-managed color | Teams already standardized on a grading platform | Flexible node or layer control and straightforward shot matching | Defaults and labels vary by application version; undocumented settings can break a handoff |
| Film Lab after normalization | Projects seeking grain, print, halation, or gate-weave character | One film-emulation layer can span normalized ARRI and third-party RGB sources | Paid licensing, host compatibility, and source normalization remain separate requirements |
Common failure modes and fixes
The LogC3 LUT looks wrong on an ALEXA 35
First verify that the ALEXA 35 clip is LogC4/AWG4 and that no LogC3 conversion was accidentally assigned. Replace the legacy look with a LogC4-compatible asset or redesign the look by visually matching a controlled set of reference frames. ARRI’s recommendation is to redesign or visually match LogC3 show LUTs for REVEAL cameras, not to assume direct compatibility.
Best Value
ARRI and third-party shots still differ after ACES input transforms
Check exposure, white balance, lighting, lens filtration, and any baked in-camera look. Confirm that the third-party raw decoder is using the intended debayer, white-balance, and exposure settings. ACES standardizes the color-management route; it does not remove photographic differences.
The same look changes between SDR and HDR exports
Inspect whether the creative look and display render are fused. Separate the creative Log-to-Log or scene-referred treatment from the output transform, then evaluate each deliverable through its own documented target transform. Check highlight roll-off and saturation in the HDR master rather than judging it through an SDR preview.
The ARRIRAW SDK conversion is unavailable
Confirm that the source is supported ARRIRAW from an older ALEXA or AMIRA generation. If the file is Apple ProRes, ARRI’s stated ARRIRAW-only conversion path does not apply. Use the appropriate ProRes input transform in the project’s color-managed pipeline and preserve the original recording and metadata.

Bypass Film Lab and inspect the normalized image. If the base image is already display-rendered, double-transformed, or incorrectly tagged, correct that stage first. Then verify Film Lab’s selected LogC3, LogC4, or ACES mode and keep grain, halation, and gate weave at intentional levels rather than using them to disguise a color-space error.
VFX plates do not match the editorial grade
Send VFX a documented technical transform or scene-referred plate policy, not a screenshot of a display-rendered grade. Include the input encoding, working space, output transform used for review, and any show LUT version. Keep spatial texture effects adjustable so they can be disabled for compositing and restored during the final grade.
Delivery and handoff checklist
- Every camera group has a recorded input encoding and gamut.
- LogC3 and LogC4 looks are clearly separated and named.
- Third-party formats use camera-specific input transforms.
- ARRIRAW and ProRes have not been treated as interchangeable conversion sources.
- The working space, creative look, and SDR or HDR output transform are documented separately.
- Film Lab’s mode, stock reference, color characteristics, and texture controls are recorded.
- Reference stills have been checked through the actual delivery transform.
- VFX and editorial receive the same transform instructions and look version.
- Original camera files and metadata remain available for reconform or regrade.
What a reliable match can and cannot promise
A disciplined pipeline can make a mixed-camera project feel as though it belongs to one photographic world. It cannot establish an objective universal tolerance for “matched” images, and ARRI’s published material does not provide a cross-camera accuracy percentage or guaranteed time saving. Judge the result with real frames under the target viewing transform, especially faces, saturated colors, skies, and shadow detail.
The most dependable order is therefore: identify the source, normalize it, balance the shot, apply the generation-appropriate creative treatment, add optional Film Lab characteristics, and render for the delivery display. Keeping those decisions separate is what makes the look repeatable when cameras, codecs, deliverables, or finishing applications change.
