Master advanced movement by treating it as a game-specific control system, not a universal bag of button combinations. First identify what preserves or builds momentum in your game, character, platform and patch. Then make one movement action repeatable, add transitions with a clear purpose, and finally apply those transitions to routes, evasions or attacks. The same input can behave differently across games, editions, characters and unlock states.
This method works whether you want faster traversal, more reliable route execution, safer repositioning or a better understanding of movement-focused clips. The examples below show how different systems handle momentum, timing, surfaces, resources and character abilities.

What advanced movement actually is
Advanced movement is the deliberate control of speed, direction, elevation and transitions between actions. A basic jump gets you over an obstacle; advanced movement asks whether you can approach at the right angle, preserve speed through the landing, redirect in the air, chain into a slide or wall-run, and arrive in a position that improves your next decision.

A traversal game may reward carrying momentum through vaults and wall-runs. A competitive action game may value a brief slide into cover, a climb that changes your angle of attack, or a zipline exit that avoids an exposed lane. A movement system can also include limits: a stamina meter, a finite move count, a surface requirement, a character-specific ability or an upgrade gate.

Do not learn a named technique as if its name guarantees a universal input. “Bunnyhop,” “dash slide,” “corner boost” and “wall eject” describe families of behavior whose timing and availability depend on the title. Learn the rule that makes the action work, then verify the exact controls in the manual or in-game settings for your edition.
Start with the control context
Before practicing, write down five details:
- Game and mode: movement can change between a campaign, training area, multiplayer mode or custom map.
- Character: abilities, body size, acceleration and traversal options may differ between characters in the same game.
- Platform and edition: Xbox, PlayStation, keyboard and controller layouts can use different labels or bindings.
- Patch or build: timing windows, costs and speed values can change after updates.
- Unlock status: an action may be unavailable until a skill, upgrade or progression item is obtained.
This check prevents the most common learning error: drilling a sequence that cannot work in the reader’s current setup. The official Mirror’s Edge Catalyst manual, for example, presents different button labels for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions and notes that some advanced moves require Upgrade Points.
Learn the movement vocabulary before the combinations
Use the game’s own terminology. Build a short glossary and describe what each action changes.

Vertical actions
Record jumps, wall climbs, vaults, springboards, grapples or climbs. For each one, identify its starting condition, the surfaces it accepts and whether it ends with a controlled landing, a bounce or a forced drop.
Speed-preserving actions
Slides, low vaults, hops and some dashes can preserve existing speed. They do not automatically create speed. Ask whether the action carries velocity into the next move, removes speed, or allows a new acceleration step.
Direction-changing actions
Air steering, wall exits, turn boosts and evasive dashes change your heading. Note whether direction is chosen at initiation, during the action, at the exit, or through a separate jump or aim input.
Resource-limited actions
Some systems limit wall-running, dashing or climbing by stamina, charges or move counts. A technically correct sequence can still fail when the resource is empty. Put the resource cost beside the move in your notes.
How momentum and timing interact
Momentum is not simply “move faster.” It is the relationship between your current speed, travel direction and the next action’s rules. The official Mirror’s Edge Catalyst manual states: “Momentum and direction determines the distance of the run.” That sentence is a useful model: a wall-run is affected by both how fast you arrive and where you are pointing.

The same manual describes sliding as farther when you enter with high momentum. It also describes beginning a wall-run by approaching a wall at an angle and pressing the relevant button shortly before contact; jumping out can extend the run. Treat those statements as that game’s rules, not as a universal formula.
When testing a move, observe four moments:
- Approach: What speed, angle and distance from the surface are required?
- Contact or initiation: Is the input pressed before contact, at contact or after the action has begun?
- Active phase: Can you steer, jump, aim or change direction while the move is running?
- Exit: Does the move preserve speed, consume it, redirect you or leave you vulnerable?
Write down what you can see rather than guessing hidden values. A missed wall-run may come from a shallow approach, late input, insufficient speed, an invalid surface or an unavailable ability. Separate those causes instead of changing several inputs at once.
A progression that turns techniques into usable movement
1. Make one action repeatable
Choose a low-pressure space: a training area, an empty section of a map or a route with a safe reset. Perform one action toward a simple target. Your first goal is consistency, not maximum distance.
- Start from the same position.
- Use the same approach speed and angle.
- Watch for the visual or audio cue that confirms activation.
- Record whether the action starts and ends where you expect.
Repeat until you can explain the failure when it happens. This is a practical teaching recommendation, not a result from a controlled learning study.
2. Test the boundaries
Change one variable at a time: approach angle, speed, contact distance, camera direction or exit input. Discover the smallest safe window before attempting a flashy version. Boundary testing tells you whether a mechanic is forgiving or demands precision.
3. Add one transition
Pair the reliable action with the next decision you actually need. Examples include a vault into a sprint, a wall-run into a jump, a slide into cover or a climb into an attack angle. State the purpose of the transition: preserve speed, clear an obstacle, break line of sight, gain height or reach a new lane.
4. Extend the chain gradually
Add only one new action at a time. If a three-action sequence fails, return to the last transition you could perform reliably and test the new link separately. Long strings hide the point of failure and encourage random button pressing.
5. Place the sequence on a route
Practice from a landmark to a landmark rather than in open space. A route reveals whether the technique saves time, reaches a shortcut, retains a useful combat position or merely looks impressive. Mark a start point, an intended line and a recovery point if the move misses.

6. Add pressure last
Only after the route is stable should you add enemies, a timer, limited resources or a moving target. Pressure changes attention and camera control. Keep the same route while adding one source of pressure so you can identify whether the issue is execution or decision-making.
Documented examples of different movement systems
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst: momentum, surfaces and unlocks
Electronic Arts’ official Mirror’s Edge Catalyst manual lists vaults, springboards, coils, wall climbs, wall-runs and slides. Its advanced-move guidance ties wall-run distance to momentum and direction, requires an angled approach, and explains that jumping out can extend a run. Its slide guidance also links distance to incoming momentum.
Use this system to practice a three-part question: how fast can you enter, which surface accepts the move, and where should you exit? A wall-run that reaches a ledge is useful only if the exit leaves you able to climb, jump or continue the route. The manual also says some advanced moves must be unlocked or purchased with Upgrade Points, so a failed input may indicate progression rather than poor timing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBecause the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 manuals use different button labels, identify the edition before following any control instruction. The mechanical idea can transfer between editions; the printed button name cannot be assumed to do so.
Red Eclipse: chaining movement while managing a limit
The official Red Eclipse parkour guide describes hops, slides, vaults, wall-running and dashing as ways to move around maps and build momentum. It also warns that exhausting move counts stops wall-running. That creates a different training problem from a purely momentum-based system: you must learn both the movement chain and the resource ceiling.
Practice a route while tracking when each action is spent. If a wall-run stops early, check whether you reached the end of the surface or exhausted the available move count. A route that looks slower in isolation may be better if it leaves enough movement capacity for the final gap or escape.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: the character changes the route
Ubisoft’s parkour overview distinguishes Naoe’s traversal and evasive capabilities from Yasuke’s. It specifically describes Naoe’s wall eject at the apex of a wall-run. This is a reminder that “the game’s movement” may actually be several character movement systems.

Unreal Engine’s wall-running mode: an implementation example
Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation for the Mover wall-running movement mode says the player retains some control during the mode and can jump. This is useful for understanding how a developer might expose steering and an exit jump, but it does not establish how any commercial game behaves. Engine documentation is an implementation reference, not a promise about a finished title’s controls, acceleration or collision rules.
Deadlock community techniques: useful labels, unstable numbers
A community guide for Deadlock lists slide bunnyhops, dash slides, fast climbs, corner boosts and zipline techniques. The guide says its timings and costs were checked against a community wiki for the October 6, 2026 patch. Those details are patch-sensitive and come from a community source rather than official documentation.
Use such a guide to identify ideas to test, not to memorize values permanently. Confirm the current patch, reproduce the move in a safe area and note whether a later update changed the timing, stamina cost, speed or interaction with a surface.
Compare movement systems by rules, not reputation
The following comparison uses only documented characteristics and keeps implementation examples separate from commercial games.
| System | Documented movement actions | Momentum or resource rule | Character or progression constraint | Best practice question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mirror’s Edge Catalyst | Vaults, springboards, coils, wall climbs, wall-runs and slides | Wall-run distance depends on momentum and direction; high momentum carries slides farther | Some advanced moves require Upgrade Points; Xbox and PlayStation button labels differ | Can you approach at the correct angle and exit while preserving a useful line? |
| Red Eclipse | Hops, slides, vaults, wall-running and dashing | Movement actions build momentum; exhausting move counts stops wall-running | Move availability is limited by the documented move count | Does the route spend movement capacity before the critical jump or escape? |
| Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Character-specific traversal and evasive actions; Naoe wall eject at a wall-run apex | The overview emphasizes differing traversal capabilities rather than a shared universal chain | Naoe and Yasuke have different capabilities | Which character can perform the required exit or approach on this route? |
| Unreal Engine Mover wall-running mode | Wall-running with player control and a jump option | Control retention and jumping are documented implementation behaviors | Engine documentation, not a specific commercial game | Which steering and exit behaviors does the finished game expose? |
| Deadlock community movement guide | Slide bunnyhops, dash slides, fast climbs, corner boosts and zipline techniques | Timings and costs are tied to a community-checked patch and may change | Patch-sensitive; community source | Does the current build still reproduce the documented timing and cost? |
Diagnose a failed movement attempt
Use a fixed troubleshooting order. Repeating the entire combo without isolating the cause wastes practice time.
- Availability: Confirm the move is unlocked, equipped and available to the chosen character.
- Surface: Check whether the wall, ledge, rail or floor accepts the action. Similar-looking surfaces may have different collision rules.
- Approach: Reproduce the required speed, angle and distance before changing the button timing.
- Input window: Test slightly earlier and slightly later inputs while keeping the approach constant.
- Resource: Check stamina, charges, move counts or other limits before blaming execution.
- Camera and direction: Verify that your movement direction and camera aim agree with the intended exit.
- Exit: If activation succeeds but the route still fails, inspect the jump, steering or landing that follows.
These categories are especially important for wall-running. A miss can be caused by angle, contact timing, momentum, an unsupported surface, a locked move or an exhausted resource. Treat each as a separate test.

Momentum drill
Choose a slide, vault or wall-run that visibly benefits from speed. Run it at low, medium and high approach speed. Observe the distance and the quality of the exit. The goal is to identify the minimum speed that produces a reliable result, not to sprint blindly every time.
Angle drill
Approach the same wall or ledge from several angles while keeping your speed similar. Mark the range that activates the move. This reveals whether the mechanic is tolerant of a broad approach or depends on a narrow line.

Exit drill
Start with the movement action already active and practice only the exit: jump, steer, turn, land or attack. Once the exit is consistent, reconnect it to the approach. This is useful when activation is reliable but the landing repeatedly fails.
Resource-budget drill
On a route with multiple movement actions, deliberately reserve enough capacity for the final obstacle. Compare a high-speed line that spends everything early with a slightly slower line that retains a wall-run, dash or climb for the end.
Recovery drill
Practice the safe response to a miss. A recovery might be a lower ledge, a slide into cover, a second jump or a retreat route, depending on the game. Advanced movement is more dependable when a failed attempt does not automatically become a lost fight or a death.

Use movement for a purpose
Traversal
For travel, prioritize route reliability and retained speed. A shortcut that succeeds one time in ten is not faster over a full session than a slightly longer line you can execute consistently.
Evasion
For evasion, value direction changes, cover access and the opponent’s line of sight. A high-speed slide that ends in an exposed lane may be inferior to a slower move that reaches protection.
Combat positioning
For combat, connect movement to the next action. A wall-run, climb or dash matters when it changes your angle, creates separation, reaches high ground or makes your attack safer. Do not judge a technique solely by travel distance.
Speed-focused routes
For time trials or speed routes, measure the complete segment from a fixed start to a fixed finish. Record failed attempts by cause and compare route consistency, not just the best single run. Patch changes can invalidate old timings, especially when a guide relies on community-checked values.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Copying a clip without its conditions: The player may have a different character, unlock, platform, patch or surface.
- Memorizing buttons before understanding timing: A sequence is fragile when the real requirement is approach angle, momentum or contact distance.
- Adding complexity too early: If the first action is inconsistent, a longer combo only hides the problem.
- Ignoring resources: A move can be executed correctly and still stop because a count, stamina pool or charge is empty.
- Practicing only in open space: Routes introduce collision, camera, landing and decision constraints that a blank floor does not.
- Using old patch advice as a guarantee: Community timings and costs can change after updates.
- Confusing style with utility: A flashy transition is valuable only when it improves speed, access, safety or positioning.
Create a personal movement reference
Keep a compact note for each mechanic:
- Name and purpose: What the action is for in your game.
- Prerequisites: Character, unlock, surface and resource requirements.
- Initiation: Approach speed, angle, distance and input timing.
- Active control: Steering, camera or jump options while the action runs.
- Exit: Expected landing, preserved momentum and available follow-ups.
- Failure signatures: What a late input, wrong angle, invalid surface or empty resource looks like.
- Patch note: The build on which you last confirmed the behavior.
This reference turns movement clips into testable hypotheses. When a guide says a technique is fast, translate that claim into a route, a start point, an end point and a reason the movement helps. When a guide lists a timing or cost, record the patch and verify it in your current build before relying on it.
Accessibility and control choices
No single controller, keyboard or mouse was established as necessary or superior for advanced movement. Use the layout that lets you reach the required actions without losing camera control, and check whether the game offers remapping, hold-versus-toggle settings, sensitivity controls or alternative input options. Because exact accessibility features differ by title, consult the current game menus and documentation rather than assuming a setting exists.
If a movement action requires a rapid transition between jump, direction and camera inputs, remapping can reduce hand travel. Test the new layout in a safe area and ensure that the remap does not make an essential combat or interaction command harder to reach. The objective is repeatable control, not conformity to another player’s bindings.
A reliable decision framework
- Define the outcome: faster route, safer escape, higher access, better angle or clearer understanding of a clip.
- Identify the rule: momentum, timing, angle, surface, resource, character ability or unlock.
- Isolate the action: repeat it from a fixed start until failures are explainable.
- Practice the transition: connect it to the next action with a stated purpose.
- Test the route: use landmarks and a recovery option.
- Validate the current build: recheck patch-sensitive timings, costs and controls.
- Keep or discard it: retain the technique if it improves the intended outcome consistently; otherwise choose a simpler line.
Advanced movement becomes dependable when the mechanic, the transition and the decision all support one another. Learn the specific game’s rules, verify your control context, preserve momentum only when the system rewards it, and build complexity from repeatable actions rather than from memorized strings.
