To mass transfer Pokémon in Pokémon GO, open your Pokémon storage from the Map View, press and hold one Pokémon, tap the others you want to include, inspect the selected group, and tap Transfer only when you are satisfied. Transfers are permanent from your account’s point of view: Niantic’s Help Center says, “you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.”
The safest approach is to narrow the list with the game’s search filters first, then perform a deliberate final review. Favorites, your active Buddy, and Pokémon defending Gyms cannot be transferred, while several special categories have additional bulk-transfer restrictions.

What mass transfer does—and why the final review matters
A transfer sends the selected Pokémon to Professor Willow and awards Candy. It also removes those Pokémon from your collection. There is no undo step described in the official transfer guidance, so treat the final Transfer command as an irreversible decision rather than a way to temporarily clear your storage.
Multi-select is useful when you have a group you have already decided not to keep. The risk is selecting a Pokémon that has personal value, useful battle potential, a favorable appraisal, or a role you still need. The game’s protection rules prevent some obvious mistakes, but they are not a complete safety system. A favorite is protected, for example, yet an unfavorited Pokémon that you intended to keep can still be selected. Your own review remains essential.

Use this sequence every time:
- Search and narrow the inventory.
- Decide what the search results are supposed to exclude or include.
- Start multi-select by pressing and holding one Pokémon.
- Add the rest of the intended batch.
- Inspect the selected group, not just the search results.
- Transfer only after the selection passes your checks.
Prepare the inventory before selecting anything
From the Map View, tap Main Menu, then tap Pokémon to open your inventory. The magnifying-glass control opens the inventory search field. Official inventory guidance says search terms can be combined, allowing you to narrow a large collection before you begin selecting.
Useful documented search categories
| Search aid | What it helps you inspect | Safety use |
|---|---|---|
favorite |
Pokémon marked as favorites | Check that protected favorites are not part of the group you intend to clear. |
shiny |
Shiny Pokémon | Separate rare-looking entries for a deliberate, individual decision. |
lucky |
Lucky Pokémon | Keep them out of an ordinary cleanup batch. |
legendary |
Legendary Pokémon | Review these separately; bulk transfer requires a setting change. |
mythical |
Mythical Pokémon | Review individually or as a deliberately enabled special batch. |
buddy0 through buddy5 |
Buddy-level categories | Identify Pokémon with Buddy progress before selecting common duplicates. |
# followed by a tag name |
Pokémon carrying a particular tag | Use your own tags as a pre-transfer keep or review list. |
! before a category |
Excludes a matching category; the official guide gives !defender as an example |
Remove a category from the displayed results when that exclusion matches your plan. |
These filters are review aids, not guarantees that every Pokémon you care about will be identified. A search result can be technically correct while your underlying rule is wrong—for example, you might search for a species or status but forget that one particular specimen has a tag or personal significance. Read the individual entries in the final selection.
Make a keep list before making a transfer list
Before you search, decide what must not be transferred. This can include a favorite, a Pokémon with a tag you use as a reminder, a Buddy you are actively working with, a rare category, or simply one specimen you want to keep. If you have not made that decision, do not begin a large batch. A short pause at this stage is safer than trying to reconstruct your collection after pressing the button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen a search is intended to show possible transfers, use the narrowest rule that matches your goal. A broad list creates more visual checking work. A narrow list may require several batches, but it reduces the number of entries you must inspect at once.

2. Start multi-select mode
Press and hold the first Pokémon until it becomes selected. A normal tap opens an individual Pokémon’s details; the press-and-hold gesture is what begins the batch-selection process described in the official guidance.
3. Add each additional Pokémon
Tap every other Pokémon you want in the same transfer. Work through the displayed results deliberately rather than tapping quickly through a grid. If the list contains entries that require individual decisions, leave them unselected and handle them separately.
4. Inspect the selected group
Pause before committing. Look at the selected entries and compare them with your keep list. Check names, species, tags, visual appearance, Buddy status, and any other information you personally use to distinguish a keeper from a duplicate. A search filter narrows what you see; it does not replace this final inspection.
Pay particular attention to the first and last items in the batch. Those are easy to overlook when you have selected a long run of entries. Also check that a change in the list—such as scrolling, applying a different filter, or returning from an individual view—has not caused you to lose track of what is selected.
5. Commit the transfer
When the selected group is exactly the group you intend to remove, tap Transfer. The Pokémon are sent to Professor Willow and you receive Candy. Once the transfer is complete, the Pokémon cannot be recovered, so do not use the button as a test of whether your selection is correct.

Which Pokémon can be transferred together?
The ordinary multi-select process has important exceptions. The following table separates categories that are blocked automatically from categories that require a setting or a different workflow.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Category | Bulk-transfer behavior | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Active Buddy Pokémon | Cannot be transferred while it is your active Buddy. | Do not expect it to be selectable in a normal cleanup batch; decide separately how you want to handle it. |
| Favorited Pokémon | Cannot be transferred. | Remove the favorite protection only if you have intentionally changed your mind, then review the Pokémon again. |
| Pokémon defending a Gym | Cannot be transferred while defending. | It must no longer be in that protected state before it can be considered for transfer. |
| Legendary Pokémon | Multiple Legendary Pokémon require the relevant option to be enabled in app settings first. | Enable the setting only when you are deliberately preparing a Legendary batch, then inspect the selection with extra care. |
| Mythical Pokémon | Multiple Mythical Pokémon also require the relevant setting to be enabled. | Use the setting only for an intentional batch; some Mythical Pokémon remain unavailable. |
| Shiny Pokémon | Multiple Shiny Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch. | Handle any eligible Shiny transfer through the allowed individual workflow and verify each one. |
| Lucky Pokémon | Multiple Lucky Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch. | Do not include them in an ordinary mass-transfer plan. |
| Good Buddy or higher | Multiple Pokémon at Good Buddy status or higher cannot be transferred together. | Review these separately rather than adding them to a general batch. |
| Certain Legendary and Mythical Pokémon | Some cannot be selected for transfer at all; the Help Center names Mew and Celebi as examples. | Do not treat a missing selection as a gesture problem; the Pokémon may be ineligible. |
The restriction for Legendary and Mythical Pokémon is a setting requirement, not permission to transfer every such Pokémon indiscriminately. Enabling the option changes what can be selected; it does not decide which specimens you should keep.
How to use searches without creating a false sense of security
Use filters to reduce the review area
Suppose you have tagged Pokémon you want to retain. Search for the tag with # and its tag name, inspect that set, and keep it out of a cleanup batch. Likewise, use the documented status searches to isolate shiny, lucky, Legendary, Mythical, or Buddy-level entries before dealing with ordinary duplicates.
Exclusion searches can be useful when an entire category should be absent from your working list. The inventory guide documents ! for excluding a matching category and gives !defender as its example. Use the exact documented category names and still check the resulting Pokémon manually.
Combine terms only when you understand the result
Because terms can be combined, a search can represent a more specific group than a single word. The trade-off is that a complex query is harder to audit. If you cannot explain in plain language exactly what the displayed result should contain, simplify the search and use multiple smaller batches.

Do not infer a keep decision from absence alone
If a Pokémon does not appear in a search, that tells you only that it did not match the terms you entered. It does not prove that the Pokémon was transferred, protected, unimportant, or safe to ignore. Clear the search and confirm when you need to account for the rest of your inventory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical pre-transfer safety checklist
Run this checklist immediately before tapping Transfer:
- Is this definitely the intended inventory view and not a different search result?
- Did you begin selection by pressing and holding the correct first Pokémon?
- Did you add only the entries that match your stated cleanup rule?
- Did you inspect every selected entry, including the first and last?
- Did you look for favorites, tags, shiny appearance, Lucky status, Legendary or Mythical status, and Buddy progress?
- Are any active Buddy or Gym-defender entries involved?
- If the batch includes Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, did you intentionally enable the required setting?
- Are you trying to include a category that cannot be transferred in bulk, such as multiple Shiny or Lucky Pokémon?
- Did you leave out anything whose status or value you cannot confidently identify?
If any answer is uncertain, cancel the batch by deselecting the questionable entries or leaving the inventory without committing. A smaller batch is preferable to an irreversible mistake.
Troubleshooting a Pokémon that will not select
The Pokémon is favorited
Favorited Pokémon are protected from transfer. Check the favorite status before assuming the interface failed. If you intentionally want to transfer that Pokémon, change its protection deliberately and then repeat the full review; do not remove protection merely to make a batch larger.
The Pokémon is your active Buddy
Your active Buddy cannot be transferred. Treat this as an eligibility restriction, not something to bypass by repeatedly tapping the entry.
Best Value
The Pokémon is defending a Gym
A current Gym defender cannot be transferred. It must no longer be defending before it can be considered for transfer.
The batch contains special categories
Multiple Legendary or Mythical transfers need the relevant app-setting option enabled. Conversely, multiple Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon cannot be sent together even if you can see them in your inventory. Split the work according to the game’s rules and make an individual decision where bulk transfer is unavailable.
The Pokémon is Mew, Celebi, or another protected special Pokémon
The Help Center identifies Mew and Celebi as examples of Legendary or Mythical Pokémon that cannot be selected for transfer. If one of these entries refuses selection, that behavior is an eligibility rule rather than evidence that you selected the wrong gesture.
Choosing between one large batch and several small batches
Use one batch when the rule is simple and visible
A single batch can be reasonable when the displayed entries all satisfy one clear rule, none fall into a restricted category, and you can inspect each selected Pokémon without rushing. This is the fastest use of multi-select.
Use smaller batches when categories are mixed
Separate ordinary Pokémon from entries that are shiny, lucky, Legendary, Mythical, tagged, or connected to Buddy progress. Smaller groups make it easier to apply the correct restriction and reduce the chance that one exceptional Pokémon is lost among routine selections.
Stop when your rule stops being clear
Do not continue selecting simply because storage space is limited or because a long list makes progress feel satisfying. If you find yourself asking why a Pokémon is in the batch, remove it and investigate later. The safest mass transfer is one whose inclusion rule you can state and verify.
What happens after a successful transfer
The selected Pokémon leave your inventory and Professor Willow provides Candy. The official guidance does not describe a recovery or undo function, so record-keeping and review must happen before the confirmation tap, not afterward.

If the inventory still needs attention, return to the search field and create a new, clearly defined batch. Do not assume that the previous selection pattern remains appropriate for a different category. A new search should receive a new review.
