Steam Input is a separate layer. Use it to put emulator hotkeys on a rear button, trackpad, face button, or radial menu when the default chords are inconvenient, while leaving the Game Boy A/B and directional mapping inside the emulator. Standalone mGBA follows a different EmuDeck hotkey profile rather than RetroArch’s Quick Menu workflow.

What you are configuring
A Steam Deck Game Boy setup has two control layers that can be changed independently:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Emulator controls: RetroArch’s Port 1 mapping translates Deck inputs into the Game Boy’s directional pad and A/B buttons.
- Steam Input controls: Steam’s controller layout sends emulator commands such as save state, load state, or menu access from physical Deck controls.
Keeping these layers separate makes troubleshooting much easier. A character that will not move can indicate an incorrect Port 1 mapping; a save-state chord that does nothing can indicate a Steam Input layout or hotkey issue. Do not replace the emulator’s A/B mapping with a Steam Input command unless you deliberately want that physical button to perform an emulator function.

Before you map anything
- Install and configure EmuDeck and launch the Game Boy or Game Boy Color ROM through its normal Steam library entry.
- Use the RetroArch version of the game if you want the RetroArch remap-file and save-state workflow described here. EmuDeck identifies Gambatte as a RetroArch core for Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles.
- Start the game before opening the Quick Menu. The menu belongs to the active RetroArch session, so changing a desktop configuration without a running ROM will not create a game-specific remap.
- Decide whether the layout is for one ROM, a content directory, or a broader emulator configuration. The save command you choose determines where the mapping is reused.
You do not need an external Bluetooth controller. The Deck’s built-in controls are sufficient; an external pad is an optional choice for a different button shape or a second player.
Map Game Boy controls in RetroArch
Open the RetroArch Quick Menu
- Launch the Game Boy or Game Boy Color game.
- Press L3 + R3 together. This is EmuDeck’s documented RetroArch Quick Menu shortcut.
- If that combination is inconvenient or does not open the menu, try Select + R3, which EmuDeck also lists as a Quick Menu shortcut.
The Quick Menu appears over the running game. A pause or a brief visual interruption while it opens is normal; your ROM has not been closed.
Set Port 1 for the Game Boy layout
- Choose Controls in the Quick Menu.
- Open the Port 1 controls. Port 1 is the controller assignment used by the active Game Boy core for the first player.
- Assign the Deck’s preferred directional inputs to the Game Boy directions and assign two convenient face buttons to Game Boy A and B.
- Check any remaining functions shown by the core, such as Start and Select, and assign them to the Deck controls you can reach without confusing them with Steam’s emulator hotkeys.
- Return to the game and test movement, both action buttons, Start, and Select before saving the file.
There is no universally correct A/B orientation. The useful test is whether the button you naturally press for the Game Boy’s primary action is the one you assigned to A, and whether the second action is comfortable on B. If a game feels wrong after mapping, return to Port 1 rather than changing Steam Input first.

Save a layout for one ROM
When the mapping is correct, return to Controls and choose Manage Remap Files → Save Game Remap File. This stores the layout for the active game only. It is the right choice when one ROM uses an unusual arrangement, when you are experimenting, or when you want another game in the same folder to keep its own controls.
A game remap affects the ROM associated with the current session. If you later launch a different title and it still has the old layout, verify that you saved a game remap rather than a content-directory remap.

Reuse a layout for a content directory
For a common layout across a group of games, choose Manage Remap Files → Save Content Directory Remap File. This applies the Port 1 mapping more broadly to the content directory that contains the active ROM. It is useful when a collection shares the same Game Boy control conventions and you want to avoid repeating the setup for every title.
Choose the narrower game remap when one title needs a special arrangement. A directory remap is a convenience for a consistent library, not a replacement for checking each game after you apply it.
Remap files versus RetroArch overrides
Remap files are for controller assignments. If you also need other RetroArch settings to persist, use the Overrides menu and save a game or content-directory override. An override can preserve settings beyond the button layout; a remap file is the focused tool for Port 1 controls.
Use the smallest scope that solves the problem:
- Game remap: one ROM’s controls.
- Content-directory remap: controls reused by games in one content directory.
- Game override: additional RetroArch settings for one ROM, when needed.
- Content-directory override: additional settings reused by a directory of content.
Saving both a remap and an override is possible, but it makes later diagnosis less obvious. If you only changed A/B or directional behavior, save the remap and leave overrides alone.

| Action | Deck shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Save State | Select + R1 | Writes the current emulation position to the active save-state slot. |
| Load State | Select + L1 | Loads the state stored in the active save-state slot. |
| Next Save State Slot | Select + D-pad Right | Moves to the next save-state slot without saving or loading by itself. |
| Previous Save State Slot | Select + D-pad Left | Moves to the previous save-state slot. |
| Quick Menu | L3 + R3 or Select + R3 | Opens RetroArch’s in-game Quick Menu. |
A reliable save-state routine
- Press Select + D-pad Right or Select + D-pad Left to choose a slot. Do this before saving so you know which slot will receive the state.
- Press Select + R1 to save.
- Continue playing for a moment, then use Select + L1 only when you intentionally want to return to that slot.
- When keeping several checkpoints, change slots first and save again. A slot change alone does not create a new state.
The slot shortcuts are documented defaults for EmuDeck’s RetroArch configuration. If you have changed Steam Input or RetroArch hotkeys, your active layout may send different commands.

Before pressing Save State, tap the slot-change chord and note that you are on the intended slot. Keep a simple personal convention, such as using one slot for a pre-boss position and another for a longer-term checkpoint. Loading is immediate, so do not use Select + L1 while testing a new mapping unless you are prepared to return to the stored position.
Put emulator actions on easier Steam Deck buttons
The Select-plus-button chords are compact but can be awkward during play. Steam Input lets you expose the same emulator commands on controls that are easier to reach.
- In Game Mode, open the affected game’s page.
- Select the controller icon to open its controller settings.
- Choose the current controller layout.
- Select an EmuDeck Steam Input profile. EmuDeck describes an EmuDeck – Steam Deck Radial Menus profile that includes blank profiles you can edit for per-game actions.
- Assign a Deck face button, rear button, trackpad gesture, or radial-menu action to the desired emulator hotkey.
- Save the layout, return to the game, and test the custom action without changing the Game Boy A/B mapping.
For example, you can reserve a rear button for save state and a second rear button for load state, or place slot changes in a radial menu. The exact physical controls are your choice; the important distinction is that Steam Input is generating the emulator command while RetroArch still owns the Game Boy controls.
When a custom layout is better than the default chords
- Use a rear button when you need to save without moving your thumbs from the D-pad and face buttons.
- Use a radial menu when you want several commands, such as next slot, previous slot, Quick Menu, and save state, without sacrificing face buttons.
- Use a trackpad action when you prefer a gesture or click and can reliably remember which direction sends each command.
- Keep at least one unmodified layout available so you can return to the documented defaults while diagnosing a problem.
Standalone mGBA is a different workflow
Standalone mGBA does not use RetroArch’s Quick Menu or its remap-file menus. EmuDeck provides an EmuDeck – Controller Hotkeys Steam Input profile for mGBA hotkeys. When mGBA ROM shortcuts are launched through Steam, EmuDeck says that profile is automatically applied.

If mGBA opens without the expected hotkeys:
- In Game Mode, open the game’s controller icon.
- Open the current controller layout.
- Select the appropriate EmuDeck profile, including EmuDeck – Controller Hotkeys when it is offered.
- Save the layout and relaunch the mGBA shortcut if the commands still do not respond.
Do not assume that RetroArch’s Select + R1 and Select + L1 commands will save or load states in standalone mGBA. The documented mGBA procedure is profile-based, and its hotkey assignments belong to mGBA’s own Steam Input profile.
RetroArch and mGBA: which setup should you follow?
| Question | RetroArch through EmuDeck | Standalone mGBA through EmuDeck |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you remap Game Boy buttons? | RetroArch Quick Menu → Controls → Port 1 | Use mGBA’s EmuDeck controller profile; the RetroArch Controls menu does not apply |
| How is the mapping saved? | Manage Remap Files, with game or content-directory scope | Use the standalone emulator’s Steam Input profile; a RetroArch remap file does not apply |
| Which profile is documented? | EmuDeck’s RetroArch setup and its Steam Input layouts | EmuDeck – Controller Hotkeys for mGBA ROM shortcuts |
| What is the documented RetroArch Quick Menu shortcut? | L3 + R3, with Select + R3 also listed | Not part of the standalone mGBA workflow |
| What save-state chords are documented? | Select + R1 saves; Select + L1 loads; Select + D-pad Left/Right changes slots | Use the mGBA hotkeys supplied by its EmuDeck profile |
The practical decision is simple: if you want RetroArch’s remap-file scopes and the documented Select chords, launch the RetroArch version. If you deliberately use standalone mGBA, configure its EmuDeck hotkey profile instead of trying to transplant RetroArch instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.External controllers and Steam Input conflicts
Steam Input supports external controllers, including Bluetooth gamepads. EmuDeck cautions that Steam Input can conflict with a controller’s native features. When an emulator needs direct controller access, disable Steam Input for that game and restart it if necessary.
Use this sequence when an external pad is connected but inputs are missing, duplicated, or behaving strangely:
- Close the running ROM.
- Open the game’s controller settings in Game Mode.
- Disable Steam Input for that game when direct controller access is required.
- Restart the game so the emulator can reacquire the controller cleanly.
- Test the external controller before changing the RetroArch Port 1 mapping.
Disabling Steam Input removes the layer that provides custom Deck hotkeys, so decide whether direct controller access or Steam-assigned emulator commands is the priority for that session.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The Quick Menu does not open
Confirm that the game is running under RetroArch, then try both documented combinations: L3 + R3 and Select + R3. If neither works, inspect the game’s Steam Input layout for a profile that has replaced the default chord. A standalone mGBA launch will not present RetroArch’s Quick Menu.
The buttons work in one game but not another
Check the remap scope. Save Game Remap File is tied to one ROM, while Save Content Directory Remap File is intended for a directory of content. Open the second game and configure or save the appropriate scope rather than assuming the first game’s file applies everywhere.
Save State appears to do nothing
First verify that the active emulator is RetroArch and that you are using the documented Select + R1 chord. If you changed the Steam Input layout, temporarily restore a profile that preserves the EmuDeck hotkeys and test again. Also change to a known slot with Select + D-pad Right or Select + D-pad Left before saving, then use Select + L1 to test loading that same slot.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Loading returns to an unexpected point
You may be on a different slot from the one you intended. Change slots deliberately, save a fresh state, and use the same slot for the subsequent load. Remember that moving to the next or previous slot does not itself save a checkpoint.
mGBA hotkeys are absent
Open the game’s controller layout in Game Mode and select the EmuDeck – Controller Hotkeys profile. Relaunch the mGBA shortcut after saving the layout. RetroArch remap files and RetroArch save-state chords do not configure standalone mGBA.
An external controller works in menus but not in the emulator
Steam Input may be intercepting the controller. Disable Steam Input for that game, restart it, and test direct access. If you later need radial menus or custom emulator hotkeys, re-enable Steam Input and build the layout after confirming the controller itself is recognized.
A repeatable setup checklist
- Launch the correct RetroArch or mGBA entry for the ROM.
- For RetroArch, open the Quick Menu with L3 + R3 or Select + R3.
- Set Port 1 so directions, A, B, Start, and Select feel natural.
- Test the game before saving anything.
- Save a game remap for one ROM or a content-directory remap for a shared collection.
- Use RetroArch’s documented save-state chords: Select + R1, Select + L1, and Select plus D-pad Left/Right.
- Customize Steam Input only when you want easier physical access to emulator commands.
- For standalone mGBA, select EmuDeck – Controller Hotkeys instead of using RetroArch menus.
- If an external controller conflicts with Steam Input, disable Steam Input and restart the game.
What to remember
Scope is the key to reliable Game Boy controls on Steam Deck. Port 1 defines how the Deck plays the game; the remap-file command defines where that layout is reused. RetroArch’s documented Select chords handle save states and slot selection, while Steam Input can move those commands to a rear button, trackpad, or radial menu. Standalone mGBA follows its own EmuDeck hotkey profile, and external controllers may require Steam Input to be disabled for direct access.
