1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMap a large lawn by first identifying the mower’s supported navigation system, then drawing every mowable area, obstacle, slope and connector before you install wire or create a virtual map. On a boundary-wire AWD mower, the charging station and guide wire determine whether the machine can reach a remote section and return home. On a satellite or app-mapped mower, the same survey becomes a digital boundary and set of exclusion zones.
The exact dimensions, slope limits and mapping controls vary by model. The figures below use Husqvarna Automower AWD models as clearly labeled examples; they are not universal specifications for every AWD robot mower.

Start with the mower’s actual mapping method
“AWD” describes the drive system, not the way a mower knows where it may cut. Before measuring the lawn, record the exact model name, model year or generation, firmware version and installation method supported by its operator manual. A large lawn can be mapped with physical boundary wire, satellite positioning, a local reference station, a camera-based system or a manufacturer’s app-created virtual map. These systems are not interchangeable.
| Mapping method | What you install or draw | How remote sections are reached | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical boundary and guide wire | Perimeter wire, charging station and, where supported, guide wire | The mower follows the guide route to a distant area and back to the station | Wire spacing, station clearance, guide-wire terminals and the model’s passage requirements |
| Satellite or network positioning | Digital perimeter, keep-out zones and any required reference or correction equipment | Positioning instructions send the mower across the mapped lawn without a buried perimeter wire | Sky view, correction-signal coverage, subscription or network requirements and firmware |
| Virtual map created by the mower | The mower records or is driven around the perimeter and obstacles | Software assigns areas, routes or zones after the map is saved | Whether the model supports zone scheduling, no-go areas and manual map editing |
| Other manufacturer-specific systems | Follow the supplied installation procedure | Depends on the navigation hardware and software | Only the exact operator manual and app documentation establish the limits |
Do not bury wire or purchase mapping accessories until this check is complete. A guide wire is useful only on a mower that can detect and follow one, and an app map cannot compensate for a navigation method the mower does not support.

Survey the property before installing anything
Walk the entire property with a tape measure, a phone or paper plan and the mower’s specifications. Separate the lawn into areas the mower may safely cut and surfaces it must never enter. Include the route between areas, not just the areas themselves.
- Outline the complete mowable perimeter, including changes in elevation and lawn edges that meet paving, gravel, planting beds or water.
- Mark trees, play equipment, fire pits, ponds, pools, drainage channels, rocks, ornamental beds, vegetable gardens and temporary items that may become permanent obstacles.
- Record fences, gates, paths and roads. A public footpath or driveway is a boundary and a safety concern even when it looks like a convenient connector.
- Identify every separate lawn section and the narrowest connector between sections. Measure the connector at its tightest point, including the space occupied by boundary wire or edging.
- Mark slopes, wet ground, retaining-wall edges and places where a wheel could lose traction. Measure the steepest part rather than estimating from the flat portion of the yard.
- Choose where the charging station can receive power and remain level, dry and accessible for maintenance. Draw possible guide-wire routes from that station toward remote sections.
- Photograph gates, low branches and overhangs. Seasonal changes can close a route that appears open during installation.
Label remote sections and dead ends
Give each separate lawn section a name such as “front,” “side,” or “orchard.” For each one, draw an entrance and an exit route. A cul-de-sac that the mower can enter but cannot leave is not a usable mapped area. If a section has only one connector, that connector must remain clear during every mowing session.
Account for the mower’s physical envelope
Measure the mower’s width, turning space and clearance around obstacles from the manual. A route that fits the body may still be too tight for the mower to turn, detect a wire reliably or recover after a wheel slips. Keep the plan conservative where the edge borders a drop, water or traffic.
Choose and prepare the charging-station location
The station is the reference point for every physical-wire map and the destination for a mower that needs to recharge. Place it where the mower can approach straight enough to dock, where the base remains level and where the power lead is protected from cutting and weather as specified by the manufacturer.

For a large property, favor a station position that gives a clear guide-wire route toward the longest or most isolated lawn section. A central position is not automatically best: a station near the main lawn may reduce wire complexity, while a position closer to a remote section may make the return path safer. Draw both the outbound and return route before fixing the station.
Follow the exact manual for station clearance, wire connection order, loop direction and any requirement for a power-supply signal. Do not assume that two models from the same brand use identical terminals or spacing.
Map a boundary-wire AWD mower step by step
- Mark the perimeter. Transfer the sketch to the ground with flags or temporary paint. Walk the intended loop and check that every protected object is inside an exclusion loop or outside the mowable area according to the manual.
- Install the charging station. Fix it on the prepared surface, connect power as instructed and leave enough working room for the mower to approach and depart without crossing an unsafe edge.
- Lay the boundary wire. Follow the manual’s distance from walls, drops, planting beds and hard surfaces. Keep the loop continuous and avoid crossing it unless the model explicitly supports that arrangement.
- Plan guide-wire branches. Route a guide wire from the station toward remote sections, long passages and the far side of an open lawn. Connect it exactly as the manual shows; a guide wire is not a second boundary loop.
- Secure and protect the wire. Peg the wire firmly at the manufacturer’s interval, leave the recommended slack at corners and bury it only to the approved depth. Recheck it after edging, aerating or other ground work.
- Check every connector. A loose or wet connector can make an entire map appear faulty. Inspect the station indicator or app diagnostic before trying to solve a navigation problem.
- Test the route manually. Place the mower at the station, start a controlled run and watch it follow the guide route into the remote section. Confirm that it can turn, cut and find the guide wire on its way home.
- Finish the map in software. If the model provides coverage settings, work areas or virtual zones, configure them only after the physical route has passed the test. Save one zone at a time so a failed change can be identified.
Route the guide wire to the far side
On an open lawn, Husqvarna Support states: “If you have an open lawn, lay the guide wire from the charging station to a central point on the opposite side of the lawn.” This is a practical starting route for supported Husqvarna boundary-wire installations: take the wire across the lawn toward the area that would otherwise be least likely to receive visits, then use the mower’s coverage settings to distribute work.
Keep the guide route smooth. Husqvarna advises avoiding sharp guide-wire angles and recommends a diagonal route across a slope to improve traction. Its support guidance also says to keep the guide wire at least 30 cm (12 in) from the boundary wire. If the exact model manual specifies a different distance, the model manual takes precedence.

Design passages rather than forcing them
A passage is not successful merely because the mower can squeeze through once. It must have enough width for reliable detection, traction, turning and return travel after grass grows or an edge shifts.
| Guidance | Value | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna recommendation for a good cutting result on Automower 435X AWD and 535 AWD | At least 2 m (6 ft 6 in) | Use this model-specific recommendation when designing a connector for either of these AWD machines. |
| General Husqvarna passage guidance when a guide wire is used | At least 60 cm (24 in) between boundary wires | Treat this as general guidance only; it does not replace the 2 m recommendation for the 435X AWD or 535 AWD. |
| Guide wire to boundary wire | At least 30 cm (12 in) | Maintain this separation unless the exact model documentation requires more. |
If a connector is narrower than the model’s recommendation, redesign the route, divide the lawn into independently accessible areas or exclude the passage. Do not narrow a 2 m connector to the 60 cm general figure and expect the same cutting result on the named AWD models.
Check slopes before including them
AWD improves climbing ability but does not remove slope limits. Measure the steepest work area and the steepest boundary approach separately. A mower may tolerate a steeper interior slope than the edge where a wheel can lose contact or slide over the boundary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Model example | Maximum slope in work area | Maximum slope at boundary | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD and 435X AWD NERA | 70% (35°) | 50% | Keep any section above the applicable limit outside the work area and boundary route. |
The percentages are product specifications, not measurements of what every AWD mower can climb. Check the exact model’s limits, surface assumptions and any restriction for wet grass. Route the boundary below a crest when possible, and use a diagonal guide route on a slope where the manufacturer recommends it for traction.

Use virtual mapping and app controls only when supported
Some Husqvarna models support Husqvarna AIM, which can display the installed wires, charging station and mower position on a virtual map. The map and zone controls are model-dependent, and current mower firmware is required for the mapping functions. A visible map does not prove that every boundary, exclusion zone or passage is configured correctly; compare the digital map with the physical installation.
Prepare the mower and app
- Charge the mower at the station and install the current firmware offered for the model.
- Open the manufacturer’s app, select the correct mower and verify that its location, station and connection status are current.
- Start the supported mapping process or open the existing map. Keep the mower within the documented operating area while it records its position.
- Draw work areas around the lawn sections that are safe to mow. Add no-go zones for beds, pools, roads and temporary hazards that will remain during scheduled runs.
- Save the map, assign schedules or cutting priorities if the model provides those controls, then observe a complete route before leaving the mower unattended.
If the app does not show zone controls, do not infer that a software update will add them. Availability depends on the exact mower, navigation hardware and firmware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Commission the map with a supervised test
The first test should be slow and supervised in daylight. Remove toys, hoses and tools, keep people and pets away, and be ready to stop the mower. Watch the points most likely to reveal a design error:
- The departure from the station and the first guide-wire turn.
- The entrance to every narrow connector and the mower’s ability to remain centered.
- The transition between flat ground and each slope.
- The farthest lawn section, including whether the mower begins cutting there instead of immediately returning.
- The return route and the final docking approach.
Repeat the test after rain or after the grass grows. Traction and clearance can change without any map setting changing.

Verify coverage over several sessions
Large-lawn coverage is a scheduling and route problem as well as a boundary problem. Keep a simple log of which named zone was reached, whether the mower docked and where it stopped. If one area is consistently missed, adjust only one variable at a time: guide-wire endpoint, passage layout, zone schedule or exclusion boundary. Changing all of them together hides the cause.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely design or setup cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The mower never reaches the far side | No guide route to the remote area, an incorrectly connected guide wire or a zone that is not enabled | Check the physical route from the station, connector order and coverage settings; test the guide route separately. |
| The mower enters a passage but turns around | Passage is below the model’s width recommendation, wire spacing is wrong or the route has a sharp angle | Measure the tightest point, restore the model’s required width and smooth the guide route. |
| The mower loses traction on a slope | The slope exceeds the mower’s work-area or boundary limit, or the surface is wet | Exclude the section, move the boundary below the limit and use the manufacturer’s recommended diagonal guide route where applicable. |
| The mower cuts a protected bed | Boundary loop is outside the intended edge, an exclusion loop is open or a virtual no-go zone is misplaced | Stop the mower, trace the loop or digital polygon against the physical edge and repair the first discontinuity found. |
| The mower cannot dock | Station is not level, approach is obstructed, guide wire does not lead cleanly to the station or a connector is faulty | Clear the approach, verify station alignment and inspect every connection before changing the map. |
| The app map does not show zones or current position | Unsupported model, outdated firmware or lost connection | Confirm model support and firmware requirements; do not create a workaround that contradicts the operator manual. |
| A previously reliable route fails after gardening work | Boundary or guide wire was cut, shifted or buried too deeply | Inspect the disturbed ground, repair the wire with approved connectors and rerun the supervised route test. |
Maintain the map as the lawn changes
Mapping is not finished when the first run succeeds. Mark the wire location before installing edging, lighting, irrigation or fencing. After seasonal planting, construction or tree work, update both the physical boundary and any virtual map. Keep passage widths clear of stored bins, hoses, fallen branches and temporary decorations.
Check the charging station and guide-wire connection at the start of the mowing season, after storms and whenever the mower reports a boundary or docking error. Clean the mower and wheels according to the manual before diagnosing traction; packed grass can mimic a slope or passage problem.

Choosing an installation kit
Husqvarna lists an Automower Large Installation Kit on the 435X AWD support page. Treat that as a product path for a physical-wire installation, not proof that one kit fits every large lawn or every AWD model. Before buying, compare the kit’s wire length, connectors, pegs and other contents with your measured perimeter and guide routes, and confirm compatibility with the exact mower and the current listing. A kit cannot correct an undersized passage, excessive slope or unsuitable station location.
Compare mapping approaches before committing
When the mower genuinely offers a choice, use the following decision order rather than choosing by the word “AWD.”
- Compatibility: select only an installation method explicitly supported by the exact model.
- Remote-area access: determine whether the method can route to the far section and return without a person moving the mower.
- Passages: compare the model’s minimum connector width and the physical room available after boundaries, edging and growth are included.
- Zone control: check whether the app or display can assign areas, schedules and no-go zones, and whether those controls require current firmware.
- Slope: compare the work-area limit with the stricter boundary limit; design to the lower limit where the mower crosses an edge.
- Maintenance: consider whether future digging, edging or landscaping will make a physical wire difficult to protect, or whether satellite visibility and correction coverage will be difficult to maintain.
This process produces a map the mower can actually use, rather than a drawing that merely outlines the property.
