To manually update Microsoft Edge on either Windows or macOS, open Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner, choose Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge. You can also enter edge://settings/help in the address bar. Edge checks for an update on that page, downloads it when available, and tells you when a restart is required.

Microsoft Edge normally checks for updates automatically, but Microsoft also provides a manual check. The About page is the direct browser-level control on both Windows and Mac. It reports the installed version, contacts Microsoft’s update service, downloads an available release and presents the action needed to complete installation.

Microsoft Support, Getting the latest Microsoft Edge update just got easier
A manual check is useful after an update notification, before troubleshooting a security issue, or when you want to confirm that a managed or metered connection has not left the browser behind. There is no universal download size or completion time published for Edge updates; the result depends on the release, connection and device.
The page separates three states that are easy to confuse. An available update still needs to be downloaded, a downloaded update may be waiting for a browser restart, and an up-to-date message means the installed build is current according to the service Edge reached. Reading that status before closing the page prevents assuming that a download alone finished the job.

The same procedure applies to current Edge installations on Windows 11, Windows 10 and macOS, subject to the operating system and organization policies that apply to the device.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge. For a shortcut, type
edge://settings/helpin the address bar and press Enter or Return. - Leave the About page open while Edge checks for updates. Do not close the browser or put the computer to sleep if the page shows an active download.
- When the page says An update is available, select Download and install. Edge downloads the package and prepares it to be applied when the browser restarts.
- If the page says To finish updating, restart Microsoft Edge, select Restart. This closes and reopens Edge so the new files become active.
- If the page says Microsoft Edge is up to date, no further update action is required from this page.
The wording can vary slightly by release, but the important distinction is whether Edge is still downloading, waiting for a restart, or already current. A download that has completed is not the same as an update that has been applied; use the restart control when it appears.
What to do before selecting Restart
Save work in web applications and note any forms or sessions that you do not want interrupted. Edge normally reopens its windows and tabs after a restart, but a site can still lose unsaved data or require you to sign in again. If several profiles or workspaces are open, allow each one to finish saving before confirming the restart.
On a Mac, select Restart in Edge rather than shutting down macOS. On Windows, the browser restart is separate from a full computer restart; only restart Windows when Windows Update or an installer requests it.
Windows-only fallback: use Windows Update
On Windows, Edge updates can also be delivered through the operating-system update channel. This option is useful when Edge’s own About page cannot reach its update service or when Windows has a queue of pending updates.

- Select Start, open Settings, and select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- For each available update, select Download & install and allow Windows to complete the installation.
- Restart the computer whenever Windows prompts you. A restart may be necessary before Edge can finish or recognize an update.
- After Windows returns to the desktop, open Edge and revisit Settings and more (…) > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge to verify the browser version and status.
Windows Update is an operating-system route, not a replacement for the About page on macOS. It may install several Windows components at once, so the list of updates and the restart behavior can differ from a browser-only update.
If Windows Update reports that the computer is current but the About page still offers an Edge update, treat the two channels separately: complete the Edge update from its page or use the official installer. Conversely, if Windows is waiting for a restart, complete that restart before judging an Edge update failure.
Fallback: run Microsoft’s Edge installer
If the About page cannot download an update, and Windows Update does not resolve the problem on a Windows computer, use Microsoft’s official Edge download page. The same fallback applies on a Mac when the in-browser check fails.

- Select Download for your operating system.
- When the download finishes, open the installer package.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. If the operating system requests administrator approval, provide an account that is permitted to install software.
- After setup completes, open Edge and check About Microsoft Edge again.
Microsoft states that updating with its installer keeps your favorites, passwords and settings. That statement concerns the update operation; it is still sensible to make sure you can sign in to any required profile and that important data is synchronized before repairing a browser installation.
Use only Microsoft’s download page for this recovery step. Search advertisements, third-party download portals and repackaged installers can provide a different file or add an unwanted program. If a work or school device blocks the installer, stop at the prompt and ask the administrator rather than trying to work around the restriction.
The installer is a recovery route, not a reason to remove the existing browser first. Uninstalling can create an avoidable data and configuration problem. Run the current installer over the existing installation, then verify the result from the About page.
How to confirm that Edge is really up to date
Do not rely only on a notification or on the installer’s final screen. In Edge, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge, or use edge://settings/help. The page displays the installed Edge version and its update status.

Record the version number if you are reporting a security or compatibility issue. Support staff can use that number, along with the operating system and the exact message on the About page, to distinguish an old build from a blocked update.

Check the page again after every recovery attempt. If the version number changes and the status says up to date, the installation completed even if Windows Update also installed unrelated system components. If the number does not change, capture the displayed error before trying another route; repeated attempts without that detail make troubleshooting harder.
Which update route should you use?

Start with the About page because it is the shortest path and works on both operating systems. Use Windows Update only on Windows, and reserve the installer for a failed or blocked update check.
The routes differ in what they can diagnose. The About page tells you whether Edge itself can reach its service. Windows Update shows whether the operating system has a pending delivery or restart. The installer tests whether a complete Microsoft package can be downloaded and applied with the permissions available on the computer. Comparing the result from each route helps identify whether the restriction is browser-specific, system-wide or imposed by a network policy.

An update failure is usually a delivery, storage, permission, compatibility or policy problem rather than a missing menu option. Work through the checks below in order, returning to the About page after each change.
1. The connection is unstable or a VPN is interfering
Edge must contact Microsoft’s update service and download the package. Confirm that ordinary web pages load reliably, then retry without a VPN if your network allows it. A VPN can route update traffic through a server that blocks or alters the connection. If the update succeeds on another trusted network, the original network path is the likely cause.
A brief loss of connectivity can leave an update paused without indicating that the browser is damaged. Reconnect, reopen the About page and let it check again. Avoid repeatedly starting downloads over an unreliable connection, especially when using a metered plan.
2. A firewall or security product blocks update traffic
Microsoft identifies msedge.api.cdp.microsoft.com for update checks and *.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com for downloads. A firewall, proxy or security-control policy that blocks these destinations can leave the About page stuck, produce a download error or repeatedly offer the same update. On a managed network, ask the administrator to allow the required Microsoft update traffic rather than disabling protection broadly. On a personal computer, review firewall and security-event logs for a blocked Edge updater entry before changing rules.

Do not permanently turn off antivirus or firewall protection to test one update. If a security product presents an allow prompt, confirm that the publisher is Microsoft and record the rule you changed so it can be restored or reviewed.

3. The computer does not have enough free storage
Edge needs room to download and unpack an update. Free storage on the system volume, then retry the check. Remove temporary files or unused applications only through the operating system’s normal cleanup tools, and avoid deleting Edge profile folders. If the installer reports insufficient space even after cleanup, restart Windows or macOS and check the available capacity again.
4. Windows has a pending update or restart
On Windows, open Start > Settings > Windows Update and complete available updates. Restart when prompted, then run the Edge About-page check. A pending operating-system restart can prevent an Edge update component from registering correctly.
5. The installer lacks permission
An installer can fail when the signed-in account cannot install software or when an administrator policy blocks the operation. Run the official installer again using an account authorized to install applications. On a work or school computer, do not attempt to bypass the policy; contact the administrator.

Microsoft recommends trying the Windows Program Compatibility Troubleshooter when applicable. Use Windows’ built-in troubleshooter, follow its proposed test, and retry the installation. Compatibility results can differ by Windows release, device architecture and organization configuration, so note the exact error rather than repeatedly launching the same installer.
7. The update cache is damaged
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes update-cache problems and reinstalling Edge from Microsoft’s site. If connectivity, storage and permissions are normal but the update still fails, close Edge, restart the computer and run the current official installer. Reinstalling from Microsoft’s source is the supported recovery path; avoid unofficial repackaged installers.
8. Update controls are disabled by an organization
If update buttons are dimmed, missing or replaced by a message that the browser is managed, an organization policy may control Edge. Policy can determine when updates are offered and which update channel is permitted. Microsoft advises contacting the IT administrator in this situation. The administrator may need to approve the update, change the policy or perform the installation centrally.
9. A metered connection is delaying the download
A metered network can restrict background downloads or defer large transfers. If your organization permits it, connect temporarily to an unmetered trusted network and start the check from the About page. Do not change metering settings on a managed device without approval, and do not assume that a stalled download indicates a browser defect.
Windows 10 support context
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10 under the stated lifecycle. This lifecycle fact is separate from the Edge update procedure: the browser’s About-page workflow and the official installer remain the relevant Edge mechanisms, while the availability of operating-system updates depends on the Windows version and support status of the device.
If a Windows 10 computer cannot obtain updates through Windows Update after that lifecycle date, do not treat the absence of an operating-system update as proof that the Edge About page is broken. Check Edge directly, verify the installed version, and follow your organization’s or Microsoft’s supported-operating-system guidance.
Practical checklist before escalating
- Open
edge://settings/helpand record the exact message and version. - Complete the required Restart action if Edge says the update is ready.
- Confirm a stable connection and test again without a VPN where permitted.
- Check free storage on the system drive.
- On Windows, complete pending Windows Update items and restart.
- Check whether firewall or proxy rules block
msedge.api.cdp.microsoft.comor*.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com. - Retry with Microsoft’s official installer.
- If controls are managed, send the version, error text and device details to IT instead of changing policy settings.
