Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn an Xbox One, the built-in update command is under Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console. To see the installed operating-system version, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info. If the update control is greyed out and says No console update available, Microsoft says the console has no update waiting at that time.
What a manual Xbox update does
A manual update check tells the console to contact Xbox services and look for a newer system package. It is useful when you want to verify an update immediately instead of waiting for an automatic check, or when a game or service asks you to install a newer console version.

The online method is the normal route: the console needs a working internet connection, and the download and installation are handled from the console’s own settings. A separate USB procedure exists for consoles that cannot complete an online update. That offline method needs a Windows PC, a USB flash drive and the current recovery package and instructions published by Xbox Support.

Before changing anything, you can record the installed version from the Console info screen. That gives you a before-and-after reference if an update or recovery attempt does not finish as expected.

Manually check for and install an online update
1. Confirm the console is online
Connect the Xbox to the internet before opening the update command. A wired or wireless connection can be used; the important requirement is that the console can reach Xbox services. If other online features are already failing, resolve that connection problem first, because the built-in update check cannot download a package without network access.
2. Open the guide
Press the Xbox button on the controller. This opens the guide overlay.
3. Open Settings
Choose Profile & system, represented by the account icon, and then select Settings.
4. Run the console update command
In Settings, open System, choose Updates & downloads, and select Update console. The console checks whether a newer system package is available and presents the applicable update action on that screen.
5. Interpret the result
- An update is offered: follow the on-screen prompts and keep the console powered and connected while it downloads and installs.
- No console update available: the control is greyed out. Microsoft describes this state as meaning that no console update is currently available to install.
The message is a point-in-time result. It does not display a future release schedule, and it does not mean that every game or app is already updated; it only reports the system-update state available to that console during the check.

Find the installed Xbox system or OS version
The version number is shown in the console-information screen rather than in the update command itself.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system, then Settings.
- Open System, then select Console info.
- Read the system or OS version displayed on the console-information screen.
Write down the complete value if you are troubleshooting. A partial note can make it harder to distinguish an older installation from the version that was installed after an update or recovery.

When to record the version
- Before an update: it establishes the starting point.
- After an online update: it confirms which version the console reports after restarting.
- Before offline recovery: it preserves useful information if the console later stops at a recovery screen.
See when the console was last updated
To check update history at a high level, return to System > Updates & downloads and choose Latest console update status. This screen shows when the console was last updated. It answers a different question from Console info: the latter identifies the installed version, while Latest console update status reports the most recent update event shown by the console.
Use both screens when diagnosing a discrepancy. For example, Console info can provide the version number you are running, and the status screen can show whether the console recorded a recent update attempt.
Turn on automatic console updates
Automatic updating depends on two settings documented by Microsoft: the console’s power mode must allow background activity, and the keep-up-to-date option must be enabled.

- Go to General > Power mode & startup.
- Set Power mode to Instant-on.
- Return to System > Updates & downloads.
- Enable Keep my console up to date.
These settings allow the console to handle eligible system updates without requiring you to start the manual command each time. They do not guarantee that a download will occur immediately; availability and scheduling still depend on Microsoft’s update service and the console’s connection.
Online update versus USB offline update
Choose the online route whenever the console can connect and complete the normal update. The USB route is a recovery fallback for cases in which the built-in process cannot finish.
| Factor | Online update | Offline USB update |
|---|---|---|
| Internet connection | Required on the Xbox | The package is downloaded on a Windows PC; the Xbox does not need to complete the download online |
| Equipment | Console and internet connection | Windows PC, USB flash drive and the current Xbox Offline System Update package |
| Process length | Short built-in menu sequence | Download, prepare the drive, extract files, copy them, connect the drive and follow the console-specific recovery sequence |
| Best use | Routine update checks and normal maintenance | Troubleshooting an update that will not complete online |
| Version reference | Read Console info before or after the update | Record Console info before starting if the console still reaches its settings |
The USB method is not a shortcut for a routine update. It adds preparation steps and introduces compatibility requirements, so it should be reserved for a console that cannot finish the online process or for a recovery procedure specifically described by Xbox Support.
Prepare an offline USB update safely
Microsoft’s Xbox Offline System Update instructions are the authority for the package download and the exact sequence for your console model. Xbox Support can change the package, file-system requirement or recovery steps, so open the current support page immediately before preparing the drive rather than relying on an old filename or tutorial.
What you need
- A Windows PC that can download and extract the update package.
- A USB flash drive. Microsoft Community guidance cited for this procedure specifies a minimum capacity of 6GB; an 8GB drive is a practical fit for that stated requirement, provided it is otherwise compatible with the current instructions.
- The current Xbox Offline System Update download from Xbox Support.
- Enough time to let the package download, copy and install without interrupting power.
Prepare the drive on the PC
- Open the current Xbox Support page for Xbox Offline System Update and confirm that its instructions apply to your Xbox model.
- Download the package specified on that page to the Windows PC.
- Prepare the USB flash drive exactly as the current instructions require, including any stated formatting or file-system requirement.
- Extract the downloaded package and copy the required update files to the location specified by Xbox Support on the USB drive.
- Safely eject the drive from Windows so the copied files are fully written before you connect it to the console.
A recent walkthrough describes an NTFS-formatted drive and refers to an OSU1 package, but those details should not be treated as permanent requirements. Microsoft can replace the package or change model-specific instructions; use the live Xbox Support page for the version you are applying.

Start the offline procedure on the Xbox
Connect the prepared USB drive to the console and follow the recovery/update sequence on the current Xbox Support page for your model. The console may open an offline system-update or troubleshooting screen rather than the normal dashboard. Choose only the option that corresponds to the documented offline update procedure. Do not remove the drive or disconnect power while the console is applying the package.
If the console does not recognize the drive, stop and recheck the support page’s file-system, folder-placement and model requirements. Re-downloading the package and preparing a clean, compatible drive is safer than repeatedly forcing an unknown file set.

The update command is greyed out
When Update console shows No console update available in a greyed-out state, Microsoft says there is no update currently available. Use Console info to document the installed version, or use Latest console update status to see when the console last recorded an update.
The console cannot complete the online update
Verify that the Xbox is connected to the internet and retry the built-in command. If the online process still cannot complete, move to the current Xbox Offline System Update instructions. The offline route exists specifically for update and recovery situations in which the normal online method is not succeeding.
The USB drive is rejected
Check the drive capacity against the cited minimum of 6GB, then verify the current formatting and file-placement requirements on Xbox Support. Capacity alone does not establish compatibility: the package, file system and directory structure must match the instructions for the console model.

The system version did not change
Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info again after the console has finished and restarted. If the same version is shown, check Latest console update status for the recorded update event. If no successful update is recorded and the online command remains unavailable, consult the current Xbox Support recovery guidance instead of repeatedly applying an unverified package.
The console loses power during installation
Do not interrupt an update deliberately. If a power failure or accidental shutdown occurs, restart the console and use the on-screen recovery behavior described by Xbox Support. If the normal dashboard does not return, the offline system-update procedure may be the appropriate next step, using a freshly prepared drive and the current package.
A reliable update checklist
- Confirm the console has internet access before using the online command.
- Record the current value in Console info if you need a before-and-after comparison.
- Use Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console for the normal manual check.
- Treat a greyed-out No console update available message as Microsoft’s indication that no update is currently available.
- Use Latest console update status when you need the last-update information.
- For automatic updating, set Power mode to Instant-on and enable Keep my console up to date.
- For offline recovery, use the current Xbox Support instructions, a Windows PC and a compatible USB flash drive meeting the stated capacity and formatting requirements.
- Verify the version again in Console info after the process finishes.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S considerations
The menu paths and quoted wording above come from Microsoft’s guidance scoped to Xbox One. Xbox Series X|S consoles can have different recovery or offline-update requirements, even when the purpose is the same. Before using a USB package on a Series X or Series S, verify the model-specific instructions on Xbox Support and do not assume that an Xbox One package, filename or drive procedure applies.
