A KB number is only an identifier, not a complete installation target. To install a Microsoft security update manually, match that KB to the device’s exact Windows product and release, OS build, CPU architecture, classification, and prerequisites. Download the matching package from Microsoft Update Catalog, install its MSU file with Windows Update Standalone Installer or DISM, restart, and verify the result with more than one signal.
The most useful first check is Get-HotFix -Id KBxxxxxxx, but it is not a complete inventory. It reports CBS/QFE updates through the Win32_QuickFixEngineering class, while some MSI or Windows Update-site updates may be absent. Windows Update history, the KB article’s expected build, and servicing/package state provide the necessary corroboration.

What you must identify before downloading anything
Write down the complete target before opening the download page. Record:
- The exact KB number, including every digit.
- The Windows product and edition, such as Windows 11 or Windows 10.
- The Windows release and current OS build.
- The processor architecture: x64, arm64, or x86 where that release supports it.
- Whether the package is a security update, cumulative update, servicing-stack update, or another classification.
You can obtain the release and build with winver or in Windows’ System information. The architecture is shown in the device’s system-type information. Do not assume that two computers running “Windows 11” can use the same file: a package can be specific to a release, build family, edition, and architecture.

Open the Microsoft Knowledge Base article for the KB and read its Applies to, prerequisite, supersedence, and known-issue sections. Those sections establish whether the package is intended for the device and whether another update must be installed first. A package for a different Windows release or architecture can be rejected as not applicable even when its filename contains the requested KB number.
Why Microsoft Update Catalog is the right download source
Microsoft Update Catalog is Microsoft’s authoritative location for standalone update packages. Microsoft describes KB numbers in the format KB1234567 as searchable catalog fields and directs administrators to open the Catalog, search for the KB, choose the matching result, add it to the basket, and select Download.
Catalog results can contain several entries with nearly identical titles. Select the row whose product, Windows release or build, architecture, and classification match the device. Read the full title and details rather than choosing the first result. A newer revision or a superseding cumulative update may appear beside the requested item; the KB article explains whether the older package is still applicable.

Catalog downloads are intended for advanced users and administrators because the person installing them is responsible for selecting the correct package and satisfying its dependencies. Avoid third-party download mirrors: they do not provide the same identity and applicability assurance as the Microsoft listing.
Manual installation procedure
1. Confirm the target KB and applicability
- Copy the KB number exactly as shown in the Microsoft support article or your administrator’s deployment instruction.
- Check the article’s Applies to list against the product, release, edition, and architecture recorded on the computer.
- Read the prerequisite and supersedence information. Note any servicing-stack update (SSU), earlier cumulative update, or checkpoint package that must be present first.
- Review known issues and the article’s expected OS build so that a later verification can distinguish an installation failure from a package that was already superseded.
Do not treat a matching KB suffix as proof of a match. The same search can return x64 and arm64 files, packages for different Windows releases, and revisions that apply only to a particular build line.
2. Search and download from the Catalog
- Open Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Enter the complete KB number in the search field.
- Compare each result’s product, release or build, architecture, and classification with the target device and the KB article.
- Add the matching result to the basket and choose Download.
- Save the MSU file in a folder you can reference from an elevated command prompt or PowerShell session, such as
C:Packages.
Keep the original filename. It commonly contains the Windows release, KB number, revision, and architecture, which makes it easier to audit the package selected for a particular computer.
3. Install prerequisites and checkpoint packages in order
Some updates cannot be applied directly. A servicing-stack update or an earlier cumulative update may be required before the target package. Installing a prerequisite after the target does not repair the dependency sequence automatically.

Windows 11 version 24H2 and later use checkpoint cumulative updates for some servicing paths. Microsoft’s Catalog guidance can expose the preceding checkpoint MSU files alongside the target. When the KB article or Catalog view lists checkpoints, download every required MSU and install them in the stated order. Do not rearrange the sequence or skip a listed checkpoint because the target filename looks newer.
Record the sequence in your change notes. If the target fails, the record shows whether the prerequisite was installed, whether the machine was restarted between packages, and which package produced the error.
4. Apply the MSU with Windows Update Standalone Installer
For an interactive installation, double-click the downloaded .msu file. Windows Update Standalone Installer checks the package and presents the applicable install or restart prompts. Follow the prompts for each prerequisite and then for the target update.
Use an elevated account. If Windows reports that the update is not applicable, stop rather than forcing the package; return to the product, release, build, architecture, supersedence, and prerequisite checks.

DISM is useful for a repeatable command-line installation or for servicing a running Windows installation. Open Command Prompt as administrator and substitute the actual path and filename:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:Packageswindows11.0-kb1234567-x64.msu
/Online targets the running Windows installation. The package path must point to the downloaded MSU, and the architecture in the filename must match the operating system. For a checkpoint sequence, run one command per MSU in Microsoft’s stated order and wait for each operation to finish before starting the next.
6. Apply the MSU with elevated PowerShell
PowerShell provides the equivalent Windows package operation. Open PowerShell as administrator and run:

7. Restart and let servicing finish
Restart when Windows requests it. Do not power off the computer, close the servicing process, or interrupt a restart while pending actions are being committed. A package can be staged before the reboot and become fully active only after Windows completes those actions.
After signing in, allow Windows to finish any remaining configuration before checking the result. If several checkpoint or prerequisite packages were required, complete the restart guidance in the KB article before judging the final package.
How to verify that the KB is installed
Use Get-HotFix for a quick direct check
In PowerShell, query the specific KB:
Get-HotFix -Id KB1234567
When the update is reported, the output includes fields such as HotFixID and InstalledOn. To list all hotfixes and sort them by installation date, run:
Get-HotFix | Sort-Object InstalledOn
Microsoft documents that Get-HotFix uses the Win32_QuickFixEngineering WMI class to list hotfixes installed on a local or specified remote computer. That makes it a convenient first check and a useful way to record when Windows reported a hotfix as installed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Understand the Get-HotFix limitation
Absence from Get-HotFix is not conclusive proof that an MSU failed. The command returns CBS-supplied QFE updates. Microsoft notes that updates delivered through MSI or the Windows Update site may not be returned by this view. A package can therefore be present or have changed the build without appearing under the expected HotFixID.
When the direct query returns no object, do not immediately reinstall the package. Use the other verification signals below and determine whether the package is already superseded, recorded under a different servicing representation, or genuinely absent.

Check Windows Update history
Open Windows Update settings and review Update history. Look for the KB number, its installation status, and the date. This view covers update activity that may not be exposed through Win32_QuickFixEngineering, so it is an essential second signal.
If history shows a successful installation but the KB is missing from Get-HotFix, preserve both observations. The difference is a limitation of the inventory view, not automatically an installation error.
Compare the installed OS build with the KB article
Read the expected OS build in the KB article and compare it with the machine’s current build after restart. A matching build is strong evidence that the cumulative update’s payload is active, even when a particular KB identifier is not returned by Get-HotFix.
Build comparison must use the same Windows release. A build number from another release line is not a valid match merely because its digits are higher.
Inspect servicing and package state
Use DISM’s package inventory when you need evidence at the servicing layer:
DISM /Online /Get-Packages /Format:Table
Review the package names and states for the KB or the corresponding cumulative package. This view helps distinguish a package that is installed and staged from one that is absent or pending. Interpret the result together with the restart state, Update history, and the KB article’s build information rather than treating any one listing as a complete update inventory.
Diagnosing “update is not applicable”
“Not applicable” generally means Windows determined that the package does not target the current servicing state. Work through these axes in order:
Best Value
| Axis | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Package identity | Exact KB and revision | Prevents installing a similarly named or superseded update. |
| Applicability | Product, release/build, and architecture | A wrong-version or wrong-architecture package can be rejected. |
| Dependency chain | Servicing-stack update, checkpoint, or other prerequisite | Missing prerequisites commonly cause installation failure. |
| Installation method | Windows Update Standalone Installer versus DISM | Both apply MSU packages; DISM is useful for scripted or image servicing. |
| Verification evidence | Get-HotFix, Update history, and build/package state | No single view covers every update channel. |
Wrong product, release, or architecture
Return to the KB article’s Applies to section and the Catalog result. An x64 MSU cannot be substituted for an arm64 package, and a package for one Windows release is not made applicable by installing it on another release with a similar build number. Download the row that matches the device, not merely the row whose title contains the desired KB.
The update is already superseded
Read the article’s supersedence information. A later cumulative update may already contain the security fixes from the requested KB. In that situation, the older standalone package may be refused because the relevant payload is already present. Verify the current build and Update history before attempting another installation.
A prerequisite or checkpoint is missing
Install the required SSU, earlier cumulative update, or checkpoint MSU first. For Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, follow the checkpoint order displayed by Microsoft. Restart whenever the article requires it, then rerun the target installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe computer has pending servicing actions
Complete the requested restart and allow Windows to finish configuring the package. A second installation attempt during pending servicing can produce misleading applicability or state messages. After the restart, check Update history, the build, and package state again.
A practical verification record
For a single workstation, save a short record containing the KB number, the selected Catalog filename, product and release, architecture, prerequisite sequence, installation method, restart time, and verification results. A useful record distinguishes:
- Requested: the KB and revision you intended to install.
- Selected: the exact MSU filename and matching product, release, build, and architecture.
- Applied: whether Standalone Installer, DISM, or PowerShell accepted the package.
- Confirmed: the
Get-HotFixresult, Update history entry, post-restart build, and servicing/package state.
This record prevents a later administrator from confusing a downloaded file with an installed update and makes it clear when a KB is represented by a newer cumulative package.
What changes for Windows 10 after its support deadline
Microsoft’s current Windows Update support notice states that after October 14, 2025, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A manual Catalog workflow does not change that lifecycle policy. Before troubleshooting a missing Windows 10 security update, confirm that the device is on a supported servicing arrangement and that the KB is intended for the relevant release. The date is a support boundary, not a reason to install a Windows 11 package on Windows 10.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Example: handling a current Windows 11 security package
Microsoft’s KB5089549 example, dated May 12, 2026, illustrates the same MSU workflow: identify the applicable Windows 11 release and architecture, review any required ordering, obtain the standalone package, and apply it with the documented installer method. Treat the example as a model for reading the article, not as a universal package for every Windows 11 computer. The device’s release, build, architecture, and prerequisite state still determine applicability.
When to stop and reassess
Pause the installation rather than repeatedly retrying when any of these conditions occurs:
- The Catalog result does not list the device’s product, release, or architecture.
- The KB article requires a prerequisite or checkpoint that has not been installed.
- The package reports that it is not applicable after the identity and dependency checks.
- The computer has not restarted after a servicing operation.
Get-HotFixis empty but Update history, the post-restart build, or package state indicates that the payload is already present.
Resolve the mismatch first, then install only the package that the KB article and Catalog identify for that exact Windows state.
