What each YouTube history control does
YouTube separates search history (terms you enter) from watch history (videos you watch), but the management screens let you handle both. The available actions have different results:

Before deleting anything: understand the cross-deletion warning
A bulk deletion is broader than its label suggests. If you delete search history for a selected period, YouTube also deletes watch history for that period. Deleting watch history for a selected period likewise deletes search history in that period. This applies to a time-range deletion, not to removing one individual entry.
If you want to preserve the other history type, remove entries one at a time with the close or remove control. Use the search and calendar tools in the history view to find only the items you intend to erase.

This matters when you are cleaning up a recommendation problem. A single late-night video can be removed without sacrificing searches you made that day. Conversely, clearing an entire week can remove both the searches and videos that YouTube would otherwise use to understand your interests. Treat the DELETE command as an account-activity operation, not merely a visual cleanup of the list.
Manage history on an Android phone or iPhone
Open the history controls
- Sign in to the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings.
- Tap Manage all history.
The history screen shows your saved activity. Its controls are substantially the same on Android and iPhone/iPad, although button placement can change between app versions.
Delete one search or watched video
- Use the search field or calendar control to locate the entry.
- Tap the close or remove control beside the search or video.
- Confirm if YouTube asks you to do so.
This is the safest method when you want to keep the other type of history. For example, remove a single accidental search instead of deleting all activity from that day.

- In Manage all history, choose the DELETE action.
- Select the period you want to clear.
- Read the confirmation carefully: the corresponding search or watch history for that period will be deleted too.
- Confirm the deletion.
Deletion removes the selected entries and their influence on future recommendations, according to YouTube. It does not erase unrelated Google Account activity unless you remove that separately.
Pause saving searches or watch history
- From Manage all history, open the Controls tab.
- To stop saving searches, unselect Include your searches on YouTube.
- To stop saving watched videos, unselect Include the YouTube videos you watch.
Pausing affects new activity; it does not delete entries already stored. Searches made while search history is paused are not saved. Searches made in YouTube Incognito mode are also not saved in search history.
Pause only the category you need. If you want to watch videos privately but still keep useful search suggestions, pause watch history while leaving search history enabled. If you are researching a sensitive subject, pause search history or use Incognito for the search session. Turning one switch off does not automatically turn off the other.
Manage YouTube history on a computer
Review or remove watched videos
- Open Google My Activity and sign in to the Google Account used for YouTube.
- Open YouTube History, then choose Manage history.
- Search the list or use the calendar controls to find a video.
- Remove an individual video, or choose DELETE for a larger period.
When you use DELETE, remember that the matching search history for the selected period is deleted as well.

Review, delete, or pause searches
- In My Activity, open the YouTube history controls.
- Use the search and calendar tools to locate searches.
- Remove an individual search, or use the delete control for a period.
- To pause saving, unselect Include your searches on YouTube.
The computer controls call the setting “Saving your search history.” Turning it off prevents new searches from being added; it does not retroactively clear the list.

Set automatic deletion for search history
On the computer search-history settings, YouTube lists automatic-deletion choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. Select the retention period and confirm it in the history controls. YouTube’s watch-history instructions confirm that an automatic-deletion control exists, but do not state the available watch-history intervals; do not assume the search intervals are identical for watch history.
Automatic deletion is different from pausing. A retention period continues to save new activity until entries reach the selected age, while pausing prevents new activity from being saved at all. Check the confirmation screen after changing either option so you know which category and account are affected.
What gets removed, and what does not
Removing a YouTube search or watched video removes that entry from the relevant history list. YouTube also says deleting old entries removes those entries’ influence on future recommendations. It does not mean every other personalization signal is reset. Subscriptions, likes, dislikes, feedback choices, satisfaction surveys and broader Google Account activity can continue to shape what appears.
Likewise, pausing history does not erase the past. Existing entries remain until you delete them, and turning the switch back on allows future activity to be saved again. If several people use the same account, history changes apply to that account wherever it is signed in, not just to the phone or browser where you made the change.
Change recommendations without deleting your history
History is only one part of YouTube personalization. YouTube says recommendations can also reflect subscriptions, likes, dislikes, Not interested selections, Don’t recommend channel selections, satisfaction surveys, and activity in your Google Account. The signal that matters depends on where you are: watch history is a primary basis for Home recommendations, while the video currently playing is the main signal for Up next.
Mark a video as Not interested
- Find the unwanted recommendation on Home or another supported recommendation page.
- Open the video’s More menu.
- Choose Not interested.
- If YouTube offers a follow-up reason, choose the explanation that fits, such as I’ve already watched the video or I don’t like the video.
Your feedback helps tune future recommendations while leaving your useful watch history intact. Give feedback repeatedly when a pattern persists; one dismissal is not the same as deleting an entire topic from your account.
Reduce recommendations from a channel
- Open the More menu beside a recommendation from that channel.
- Choose Don’t recommend channel when the option is available.
This is more targeted than clearing all history because it addresses a source of unwanted videos rather than removing every personalization signal. The option may not appear for every surface or device, so use Not interested when channel-level feedback is unavailable.
Undo recommendation feedback
If you change your mind, open My Activity and go to Other Google activity. YouTube’s feedback controls there let you review and clear submitted Not interested and Don’t recommend channel feedback. Clearing feedback does not restore deleted history; it only removes that particular recommendation signal.

Why one fix may not change every surface
Home, search results, notifications, suggested videos and Up next do not use exactly the same signals. Home relies heavily on watch history, whereas the currently playing video is the main signal for Up next. A channel you blocked from Home may therefore appear in another context, especially when it is closely related to the video you are watching. Use the control on the surface where the unwanted item appears and allow new activity to provide a clearer pattern.
What happens if you turn off watch history
Watch history is a primary basis for Home recommendations. YouTube says that if watch history is off and there is no significant prior watch history, Home recommendations are removed. The Home page still retains the search bar and the left-side menu.
This is an important distinction: turning history off can eliminate the Home feed, not merely make it less personal. If you want a useful but cleaner feed, leave watch history on and use targeted feedback, or delete only the entries that are distorting recommendations.

If you clear old watch history and then leave the setting off, the lack of a significant prior history is what causes the Home recommendation area to disappear. Re-enabling watch history lets new viewing activity become a signal again, but it does not restore entries you deleted.
Manage history and recommendations on a TV or game console
YouTube’s TV and console instructions place watch-history controls in Settings from the left-side menu. Menu names and their exact position vary by device and app version.
Pause or clear watch history
- Open YouTube and expand the left-side menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open the watch-history options.
- Select the pause or clear command and confirm.
Read the confirmation for a clear operation carefully because bulk deletion can affect the corresponding history type for the same period.
Give recommendation feedback with a remote
- Highlight the unwanted recommendation.
- Press the remote’s select button to open its options.
- Choose Not interested, or choose Don’t recommend channel when offered.
If the television is shared, check the active profile before clearing anything. A change made on a console or smart TV affects the signed-in account across devices, while a guest or different account will have a separate history.

How Google Account activity affects YouTube
YouTube says Google Account activity may influence recommendations, search results, in-app notifications, and suggested videos in other places. If clearing YouTube history does not change what you see, review My Activity and the Google Account activity controls as well. This broader review is separate from the YouTube-specific switches and can affect more than YouTube.
Do not assume that deleting one YouTube entry removes every related Google activity record. Check the activity item and the account shown in My Activity, especially when several Google services or profiles are in use.

Troubleshooting common results
“I paused history, but old items are still there”
Pausing prevents new activity from being saved; it is not a deletion command. Return to Manage all history and remove old entries individually or select a deletion period.

“I deleted searches and my watched videos vanished too”
That is the documented cross-deletion behavior for a bulk time-range deletion. Recover the entries only if YouTube provides them in your account; otherwise, future recommendations can rebuild from new activity and feedback, but deleted history itself is not restored by unpausing.
“The Home feed is empty after I turned off watch history”
YouTube intentionally removes Home recommendations when watch history is off and there is no significant prior watch history. The search bar and left-side menu remain. Turn watch history back on if you want Home recommendations to return, then use targeted feedback rather than a full history shutdown.
“Recommendations still show subjects I dislike”
Watch history is not the only signal. Mark individual videos Not interested, use Don’t recommend channel for persistent sources, review likes and subscriptions, and check broader Google Account activity. Up next may continue to differ because the currently playing video is its main signal.
“I cannot find the same menu on my device”
Use the profile-picture route on phones and tablets, My Activity on a computer, or the left-menu Settings route on a TV or console. YouTube changes menu wording and placement by device and app version, so look for the equivalent history, controls, pause, clear, or feedback command.
