On a Windows PC, use the Xbox PC app as the main Game Pass library, with Microsoft Store also handling supported installations. On an Xbox console, download queues and storage are controlled by console software whose labels can change by system version. First identify your platform, then use the matching workflow below. Local game installs consume drive space; cloud gaming can avoid a full installation when the title and your membership support streaming.
Start by identifying the app and platform
Windows has two Microsoft entry points that can be involved in Game Pass installs. The Xbox PC app is the central place to browse the Game Pass catalog and download or install PC games. Microsoft also describes Microsoft Store as a source for downloading and installing games on Windows and Xbox.

Do not use the old standalone Xbox Game Pass app as your assumed download route. Xbox Wire reported on September 25, 2024 that new downloads of that app would stop beginning in November 2024. Open the current Xbox app on Windows, or use Microsoft Store when the game’s listing directs you there.

| Where you play | Primary place to look | What a local download does | Alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Xbox PC app; Microsoft Store for supported listings | Installs game files on a selected Windows drive and uses local capacity | Cloud gaming for eligible titles and memberships |
| Xbox console | Console interface and its download queue | Stores the game on internal or supported external storage | Cloud gaming where offered on your console and subscription |
The exact console storage and queue labels are not universal across every Xbox generation and system update. Treat any menu path copied from an older guide as a hint, not a guarantee; use the labels currently displayed on your console.

Where do I find my Game Pass downloads on Windows?
Use the Xbox PC app first
- Open the current Xbox app for Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns or is authorized to use the Game Pass membership.
- Browse the Game Pass library or search for a specific title.
- Open the game’s page and choose the install or download command shown for your PC.
- When the app asks for an installation location, select the available Windows drive or folder option. The choices can differ by game, Windows build, and whether the title uses Microsoft’s gaming services.
- Confirm the installation and monitor its progress in the app’s queue or library view.
Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance describes the Xbox app as a place to download and install games, while also presenting cloud play as an option for supported games. See Microsoft’s Windows gaming page if you need to confirm which experience applies to your PC.
Use Microsoft Store when the listing requires it
- Open Microsoft Store from the Windows Start menu.
- Sign in with the account associated with your purchase or subscription.
- Search for the game and open its listing.
- Select the available install or get command, then follow the location and permissions prompts shown by Windows.
- Return to the Store’s library or downloads area to check progress if the game does not appear in the Xbox app queue.
Some titles may open or hand off between Store and Xbox components. That is normal; use the application that currently owns the install prompt rather than starting a second download from another listing.
How do I choose between installing a game and cloud gaming?
| Option | Storage impact | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local installation | Uses space for the game and later updates | A compatible Windows PC or Xbox console, enough free capacity, and the relevant account or membership | Playing when you want files on the device or when streaming is unavailable |
| Cloud gaming | Avoids a full local game installation | A title and membership that support streaming, plus a reliable internet connection | Trying a large game before committing drive space or playing on a device with limited storage |
Cloud availability is not universal. It depends on the individual title, your Game Pass plan, your region, and Microsoft’s current service offering. A cloud button appearing for one game does not establish that every Game Pass title can be streamed. Streaming also shifts the problem from disk capacity to network quality and service availability; Microsoft’s Windows page explains the download/install and cloud-play choices without promising a particular speed or performance level.
How do I change where Xbox games install on a Windows PC?
Windows and the Xbox app may present different controls, so start with the screen that appears when you install the game.

Choose a drive during installation
- Start the installation from the Xbox PC app or Microsoft Store.
- Look for the install-location, drive, or storage selector in the confirmation dialog.
- Select the drive with sufficient free space and confirm.
- Keep the PC awake and connected until the queue reports completion.
If no selector appears, the title or current app configuration may be using a managed Windows location. Do not move protected game folders manually in File Explorer; doing so can break permissions or make the app believe files are missing.
Review Windows storage defaults
Windows includes a setting for where new content is saved. Open Windows Settings and search for “where new content is saved,” then review the drive assigned to new apps. The exact navigation and wording can vary by Windows 11 release. Changing that default affects future installations and does not necessarily relocate games that are already installed.
After changing a default, begin a small or unimportant installation and verify the destination shown in the confirmation dialog. If the app still offers a separate location selector, that per-install choice takes precedence for that download.

- Check the game’s entry in Windows installed-app settings for a Move command. Microsoft-managed games do not always expose one.
- Use the Xbox app’s own install or library controls if it offers a relocation action.
- If neither interface offers a move option, uninstall the game and reinstall it to the desired drive rather than dragging its folder.
- Confirm that the new drive is available to the same Windows account and has enough free space for the game plus updates.
Do not assume that a drive containing ordinary files can be swapped between PC and Xbox console and continue a Game Pass installation unchanged. PC and console storage systems are managed differently.

How can I free space without losing track of my library?
Remove games you no longer play
Uninstall from the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or Windows installed-apps page—the same interface that currently lists the game. Removing the local files ends the installation but does not by itself cancel your Game Pass membership. You can reinstall while the title remains available to your account and catalog.
Keep a margin for updates
A drive that has only enough room for the initial download can still fail later. Updates need temporary working space in addition to the installed game. Leave practical headroom instead of treating the advertised game size as the only capacity requirement.
Audit the largest folders safely
- Use Windows Storage settings to identify which categories are consuming space.
- Remove temporary files only after checking that they are not active downloads.
- Empty the Recycle Bin if it contains previously uninstalled game data.
- Do not delete Xbox or Microsoft gaming folders by hand while an installation is paused or queued.
If a download repeatedly restarts, first verify free space, then cancel the failed item through the app that owns the queue and start it again. A partially downloaded folder is not a reliable backup.

Console controls are separate from Windows controls. Xbox Support maintains pages for viewing installation status and managing storage, including installation status and storage management. The visible labels can change with console software, account region, and Xbox generation.

Use the current queue shown by the console
- Open the console’s games and apps area and locate the section that shows active, queued, or recently installed items.
- Select the Game Pass download you need to inspect.
- Use only the pause, resume, cancel, or priority commands currently displayed for that item.
- After changing the queue, verify that the game returns to an active download state rather than remaining paused.
Because menu labels are software-version dependent, avoid relying on a fixed button sequence from an older console guide. If your screen does not contain the expected queue command, open the console’s Settings search and look for installation, updates, or storage terms, then follow the current on-screen path.
Review console storage before installing
- Open the console’s Settings area and search for storage or devices.
- Review internal free space and any connected storage listed by the console.
- Remove or relocate games using the console’s own manage-storage actions.
- Return to the Game Pass listing and retry the installation after the console reports sufficient space.
Do not format an external drive merely because a web guide recommends it. The accessible Xbox storage guidance does not establish one universal list of compatible drive types, capacity limits, format rules, or whether every game can be played directly from every attached device. Confirm those details in the current support instructions for your console generation before buying or formatting a drive.

Windows Microsoft Store app updates
Microsoft documents an automatic-update control for Store apps. In Microsoft Store, open Profile, then Store Settings, and review the setting for automatic app updates. The official instructions are at Microsoft Support.
This control is specifically about Microsoft Store app updates. It should not be presented as a universal switch for every Xbox PC game, every Xbox service component, or console game updates.

Xbox PC game updates
Game update behavior can involve the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Windows gaming services, and the game publisher’s package. If a game begins updating unexpectedly, check the app that lists the download, pause the item there if that control is offered, and review the Store setting separately. Turning off Store app updates does not prove that a particular game will never receive content or security updates.
Xbox console updates
Console game and system-update behavior is distinct from the Windows Store setting. Use the update and power options currently shown in your console’s Settings, and confirm the result by checking the game’s queue status. Microsoft’s readable Store guidance does not establish a matching console toggle, so do not copy the Windows Profile > Store Settings path onto an Xbox console.
Why is a Game Pass download stuck, missing, or repeatedly failing?
The game is not visible in the expected app
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account with the Game Pass entitlement.
- Search both the Xbox PC app and Microsoft Store on Windows; a supported title may be listed in one before the other.
- Check whether the title is available for PC, console, cloud, or a combination. Game Pass catalog availability can differ by platform and can change over time.
- On console, refresh the library or queue view rather than starting duplicate installs from multiple screens.
The queue is paused or will not start
- Check the selected drive’s free space.
- Check for a pending restart, sign-in prompt, or permission request in the app or Windows.
- Pause and resume the item once from the interface that owns the queue.
- If it remains stuck, cancel that item, restart the app or console, and begin a fresh installation.
Canceling a failed download removes incomplete local data; it does not remove the game from your account. A clean retry is safer than deleting unknown folders manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuick Recap
The download finishes but the game will not launch
- Open the Xbox app or Microsoft Store and check for a pending update.
- Restart Windows or the console after a major install or service update.
- Verify that the account launching the game is the one with the required entitlement.
- If the title was installed on an external drive, reconnect that drive and let the platform detect it before attempting repair or reinstall actions.
Which workflow should you use?
| Your situation | Recommended first action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You have plenty of PC or console space and want offline access | Install locally through the platform’s current Game Pass listing | Game files remain on the device, subject to future updates |
| Your PC drive is nearly full | Check for a different install drive or use cloud gaming if the title and membership support it | Avoids an unnecessary full installation |
| You cannot identify where a Windows install went | Check the Xbox app and Microsoft Store library, then review Windows storage defaults | Both Windows services can participate in delivery |
| A console guide shows a menu you do not have | Use the console’s current Settings search and queue labels | Console paths vary by software version and generation |
| You want to disable automatic updates | Adjust Microsoft Store’s Profile > Store Settings option on Windows; review console update settings separately | The verified Windows control does not govern console behavior |
| You are considering an external console drive | Verify compatibility, formatting, capacity, and play rules for your exact console first | Those rules are model- and software-dependent |
A short maintenance routine
- Once a month, check free space on every drive used for Game Pass.
- Remove games you have finished and keep a margin for updates.
- Review the Windows Microsoft Store automatic-update setting if background downloads are a concern.
- On console, inspect the current queue before starting another large install.
- When an app or menu looks different, trust the current platform interface and Microsoft’s latest support page rather than an undated walkthrough.
