Start by managing the games you already have
Uninstalling an unplayed game is the simplest way to reclaim space. If you want to keep a game available without using your main drive, use the game-management controls to move it when that option is available. The steps differ between Windows and Xbox consoles.

Manage downloads and installed games on Windows
Choose a location for new installs
The Xbox app can offer a drive choice when you install a PC game. The exact prompt and available locations depend on your app and PC setup; check the install screen before confirming the download. Microsoft Community guidance discusses choosing another drive for new installs, but it is community advice rather than a guarantee that every configuration will show the same controls: Where does the Xbox app install games?
Move or remove an installed game
- Open the Xbox app and select the installed game.
- Open its Manage controls and look for the option to move the game or change its installation location. Labels can differ between app versions.
- Select a supported destination drive and follow the prompts. If no move option appears, use the app’s available install or uninstall controls rather than assuming the game can be moved in that setup.
Xbox Wire described moving and repairing games through Manage in a November 18, 2021 announcement for Xbox Insiders. Manage storage on an Xbox console
On Xbox consoles, use the current Storage and My games & apps controls to review installed games, choose what to remove, or manage a game’s storage location where supported. Menu names and paths can change with console software, so follow the labels shown on your console rather than relying on a fixed sequence of button presses.
Uninstalling a title removes its associated local storage, according to Microsoft’s developer documentation on local storage. That documentation does not establish that cloud saves are available for every title or in every situation; do not treat an uninstall as proof that every save is backed up. For problems installing a game or app to a device, Microsoft Support’s troubleshooting page provides a support route.

Can you play Xbox games from an external drive?
Storing a game and launching it from a drive are separate capabilities. An external USB drive can expand the space available for an Xbox library, but whether a particular game can run from it depends on the game and console generation. A 2026 TechRadar guide to Xbox Series X storage discusses external-drive storage and backward-compatible games; it is secondary guidance, not an official compatibility list.
For Xbox Series X|S optimized titles, do not assume an ordinary USB drive can run the game. Check the current storage requirements for the specific title and console, and use internal storage or a supported expansion card when the game requires supported console storage. The sources available here do not establish a complete, current model-by-model compatibility matrix, so verify a drive’s supported use before buying.

What to check before buying more storage
- Storage or playback: Confirm whether the drive can only hold games or can also run the titles you intend to play.
- Console and game compatibility: Check support for your console generation and the specific games, particularly Series X|S optimized titles.
- Connection and usable capacity: Compare the drive’s interface and usable space with your device and library needs.
- Price: Compare the cost of compatible options; no single drive is suitable for every console, game, or budget.
