Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo add space for games you can play directly, use a dedicated Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card: Microsoft says it can run optimized games with performance matching the internal SSD. A USB 3.1 drive can store games and play backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles, but Series X|S-optimized games must be moved to internal storage or the expansion card to play. You can choose an expansion card as a default install location and move or copy games between storage devices.
Choose storage based on what you want to play
| Storage | What it can do | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Internal console storage | Runs games, including Series X|S-optimized titles. | Keep games here when they need internal storage to run and no compatible expansion card is available. |
| Dedicated Series X|S expansion card | Runs Series X|S-optimized games. Xbox describes its performance as matching the internal SSD. It can be selected as a default install location, and games can be moved or copied between it and local storage. | Add immediately playable space for optimized games. |
| USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD | Stores Xbox games and runs backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Xbox’s comparison says it cannot run Series X|S-optimized games. | Keep a larger library available for older compatible games, or archive optimized titles for later transfer. |
For Series S, Microsoft’s product FAQ says the console supports standard standalone hard drives and products bearing the Designed for Xbox badge, and recommends the 1TB Series X|S expansion card for the custom SSD experience. Can you play Series X|S games from a USB drive?
No—not Series X|S-optimized games, according to Xbox’s official storage comparison. A USB drive can hold one of these games, but storage is not the same as being able to launch it from that drive. Move or copy the game to the internal SSD or a dedicated expansion card before playing. In contrast, backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games can run from USB storage.

Xbox Wire confirms that players can move or copy games between local and external storage, and set the expansion card as a default install location. Xbox Wire said in 2020 that many Series S games would often be up to 30% smaller on average, reflecting an expectation about game design and texture data—not a guaranteed reduction for every title or a setting that frees a predictable amount of space. Xbox Wire, September 24, 2020
