On a Samsung Galaxy phone, three different controls are often confused: placing a widget on the Home screen, granting an app permission to read data, and limiting the app’s background activity. Use the Home-screen widget menu to add or remove the panel, Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions to review access, and Settings > Battery > Background usage limits to control background battery use. Changing one of these does not automatically change the other two.
If a widget is missing information, first check the app permissions that correspond to that information. If the app is draining the battery, inspect battery-usage details before applying the least restrictive limit that solves the problem. Deep sleep saves more background activity than ordinary sleep, but it can delay updates and notifications until you open the app.

Understand which Galaxy control you actually need
A widget is a small view of an app placed on a Home screen. Its position and size are managed from the Home-screen editor. The widget does not have a universal, separate “widget permission” switch on every Galaxy model. The app behind it may need permissions such as location, calendar, contacts, or notifications to show particular information, and those permissions are reviewed in the app’s own settings.
Background limits are a third, independent control. Samsung can let an app run occasionally, stop it from running until you open it, or exempt it from automatic sleep. These choices affect refreshes, alerts, and battery consumption, not whether the widget exists on the Home screen.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Widget placement: add, move, resize, or remove the panel from the Home screen.
- App permissions: decide which protected information or device functions the app may access.
- Background usage limits: decide how much work the app may perform when you are not actively using it.
Keeping those controls separate prevents a common mistake: removing a widget to solve battery drain, or granting a permission and expecting a widget to update even when the app is restricted from running.
Add or remove a widget on a Galaxy Home screen
Samsung’s One UI 7 instructions use the following route. Menu presentation can differ by Galaxy model and software version, but the action remains in the Home-screen editor.
Add a widget
- Go to the Home screen and touch and hold an empty area.
- Tap Widgets.
- Find the app and select the widget style or size you want.
- Tap Add. Place the widget where you want it; if the editor offers a resize frame, adjust it before leaving the Home screen.
Adding the panel only places a shortcut-like view on the Home screen. It does not grant the app access to information and does not exempt the app from battery management.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Remove a widget
- Touch and hold the widget on the Home screen.
- Tap Remove.
Removing the panel does not uninstall the app, revoke its permissions, or necessarily stop its background activity. If battery use is the reason you are removing it, continue to the battery-usage and background-limit steps below.
Review the permissions that feed a widget
When a widget shows a blank value, an old location, missing appointments, or another incomplete result, inspect the app’s permissions before changing battery settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app that provides the widget.
- Tap Permissions.
- Review the permissions under Allowed and Not allowed, then select the option appropriate for the feature.
Depending on the permission and Android version, choices can include allowing access only while using the app, asking every time, or denying access. Some apps present additional choices. For example, a weather widget may need location access for local conditions, while a calendar widget may need calendar access to display events. Grant only the access required for the information you want.

A permission change is not a guaranteed widget repair. The app could have its own account, sync, server, or widget-refresh problem, and a background limit can still prevent timely updates. Treat permissions as a prerequisite check rather than a promise that every widget will refresh immediately.
What to do when the expected permission is absent
Not every widget depends on a permission visible in the app screen. Some information comes from an account sign-in, an app-specific setting, or the app’s own synchronization service. Check the app’s settings and sign-in status after reviewing Android permissions. If the permission is present but the widget remains empty, continue with the refresh and battery checks instead of repeatedly changing access.
Why a Galaxy widget may not update
Widget failures usually come from one of four places: the app cannot access the required data, the app has not synchronized, the system has restricted its background work, or the widget itself needs to be reloaded.
Check the data path first
- Open the app from the widget and confirm that the same information appears inside the app.
- Verify the relevant permission in Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions.
- Check whether the app requires an account, an enabled sync option, or an internet connection.
If the information is missing inside the app too, the widget is only displaying the underlying app’s problem. Fix the account or sync issue before changing widget placement.
Reload the widget without changing permissions
For a stale panel, remove the widget from the Home screen and add it again using the steps above. This refreshes the widget instance, but it does not alter permissions. If the panel updates only after opening the app, investigate its background limit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck background restrictions
Samsung may place unused apps into sleep categories based on usage patterns, inactivity, and background battery consumption. A sleeping or deep-sleeping app may therefore update less often than an app you use frequently. The exact behavior depends on the Galaxy model, One UI version, and the individual app.

See which app is using battery in the background
Do not start by putting every app into deep sleep. First identify the app associated with the drain.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery. On some older interfaces, open Battery and device care first, then tap Battery.
- Review the battery-usage graph and the app details. Look for an app with unusually high background activity relative to how much you have used it.
- Open that app’s background-usage controls and choose the least restrictive setting that addresses the problem.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance uses the battery graph and details as the starting point because a restriction applied to the wrong app can break useful updates without reducing the actual drain. A high total percentage alone is not proof that a widget caused the usage; inspect whether the app’s background activity is the unusually large part.
Choose among sleeping, deep sleeping, and never sleeping
Under Settings > Battery > Background usage limits, Samsung provides automatic management and lists for sleeping, deep sleeping, and never sleeping apps. Older Galaxy software may put the same controls behind Battery and device care > Battery. Use Settings search for “Background usage limits” if the path is different on your phone.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Setting | Background activity Samsung describes | Effect on updates and notifications | Appropriate use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleeping apps | The app may still run occasionally in the background. | Background work can be less frequent, so timing may vary. | Apps that do not need constant refresh and can tolerate occasional activity. |
| Deep sleeping apps | The app does not run in the background and works only when opened. | Samsung says app updates and notifications are available only when you open the app. | Infrequently used apps where delayed alerts and refreshes are acceptable. |
| Never sleeping apps | The app is excluded from automatic sleep. | It can continue background work without the automatic sleep exception. | Apps whose timely background behavior is important and worth the additional battery use. |
Samsung’s wording for the strongest restriction is explicit: “Deep sleeping apps: Apps set to deep sleep will not run in the background. You will receive app updates and notifications only when you open the app.” That is why deep sleep should not be the default fix for an app that supplies time-sensitive alerts.
Automatic sleep for unused apps
The automatic option lets the phone manage apps that are not used regularly. Samsung Developer documentation explains that usage patterns, periods of inactivity, and background battery consumption can influence sleeping or deep-sleeping assignments. A Never sleeping apps exception is available for apps that must remain eligible for background work. Automatic management is not a guarantee that every Galaxy model will classify every third-party app identically.
Apply the least restrictive limit that solves the drain
Use this decision sequence after identifying the app in battery details.

Use ordinary sleep when occasional work is acceptable
Place a rarely used app in Sleeping apps when you want to reduce routine background activity but still want the possibility of occasional work. This is the moderate restriction. Test the widget or notifications over the period in which you normally rely on them.

Use deep sleep only for apps you open manually
Choose Deep sleeping apps for an app that does not need to alert you or refresh while closed. Open the app whenever you need current data. A widget backed by a deep-sleeping app can remain on the Home screen, but its information may not change until the app is opened, so this setting is unsuitable for a clock-like feed, active navigation, urgent messaging, or any other time-sensitive function.
Use Never sleeping as a deliberate exception
Add an app to Never sleeping apps when its background behavior is part of its purpose and delayed operation is unacceptable. This removes Samsung’s automatic sleep exception for that app and may increase background battery use. Reserve it for apps you have identified as necessary rather than adding every widget provider.
Test and reverse the change
- Change one app’s category at a time.
- Use the phone normally through the period when the widget, alert, or sync should occur.
- Check whether the expected update or notification arrived and review battery details again.
- If the feature broke, return to the previous category or remove the app from the sleep list.
This one-change-at-a-time approach makes it possible to tell whether the restriction solved the drain and which feature it affected.

Time-sensitive communication
Messaging, calling, security, and other alert-driven apps are poor candidates for deep sleep if you rely on immediate notifications. If battery use is high, inspect the app’s own sync and notification settings first, then test ordinary sleep only if delayed alerts are acceptable.
Recommended Free Tools
Navigation and location-dependent tools
Navigation and other location-aware services may need background operation during an active task. Deep sleep can stop that work until the app is opened. Keep the app outside deep sleep when you need an ongoing route or service, and use a less restrictive category only after testing the exact activity you depend on.
Best Value
News, weather, finance, and other informational widgets
These widgets trade freshness for battery. If opening the app manually is acceptable, deep sleep can limit background work. If you want periodic updates, ordinary sleep is the safer first experiment. Confirm that the app itself can display current data before blaming the widget.
Rarely used utilities and games
Deep sleep is usually least disruptive for apps you open only on demand and from which you do not expect alerts. Removing their widgets may reduce Home-screen clutter, but it is the background-limit choice—not removal alone—that controls whether the app can run while closed.
Use Power saving mode for an immediate, broader reduction
Galaxy’s Power saving mode is a device-wide battery measure. It can reduce background activity and limit selected features, making it useful when the phone must last longer immediately. It is not a widget-permission fix and does not replace checking the individual app’s permissions or background category.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBecause Power saving affects more than one app, expect broader behavior changes than you would get from placing a single app in Sleeping apps. Use it when the priority is extending the phone’s remaining charge, then turn it off or adjust the selected limits when normal operation is needed. Samsung notes that the available settings and path vary by model, software version, and region.
When your menus do not match these paths
Samsung changes labels and menu locations across Galaxy models, One UI releases, and regions. The widget instructions cited for One UI 7 come from Samsung Canada; permission guidance comes from Samsung US support; battery descriptions also appear in Samsung Canada, Samsung Gulf, and Samsung Developer documentation. Their labels are similar but not identical.
- Use the Settings search field for Permissions to jump to an app’s permission page.
- Search for Background usage limits when Battery does not show the option immediately.
- Try Battery and device care > Battery on older software.
- Read the description shown on your phone before confirming a sleep category, because the available choices can differ.
Do not assume that instructions for one Galaxy model establish identical behavior on every third-party app. The phone’s displayed description and the app’s own documentation are the best guides when a label or option differs.
Quick Recap
A practical troubleshooting checklist
- Widget absent: touch and hold an empty Home-screen area, open Widgets, select the app, and tap Add.
- Widget removed but battery still drains: inspect Settings > Battery; removal does not change app permissions or background limits.
- Widget lacks specific information: open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions and review the permission tied to that information.
- Widget updates only after opening the app: check whether the app is in Deep sleeping apps and move it to a less restrictive category if timely refresh matters.
- Notifications stop: undo deep sleep first; Samsung says deep-sleeping apps provide updates and notifications only when opened.
- Battery drain continues: recheck the usage graph to confirm that the targeted app is still the source, then investigate another high-background app rather than restricting everything.
