How to Manage Storage When You Buy More Digital Games on Switch, PS5, or Xbox

When you run out of room, first decide whether you need a game installed and playable now or simply want to avoid downloading it again later. On Nintendo Switch, archive or delete downloaded games you can redownload, or add a microSD card for software storage. On PS5, use a compatible M.2 SSD for games you want to play from expanded storage, or USB extended storage to keep games installed but move PS5 titles back before playing. Xbox-specific steps and compatible storage options are not confirmed here, so check current Microsoft support guidance before buying or changing anything.

Choose between freeing space and keeping games installed

There are three different ways to manage a full console: remove a game and download it again when needed, move it to storage where it cannot be played directly, or expand storage with a compatible device that lets you keep more games installed. The right choice depends on whether you value immediate access, avoiding another download, or minimizing setup.

Option What it does Best for
Archive or delete software Frees space by removing downloaded game software; redownload later when you want it. Games you do not need installed right now.
Move to storage that cannot play the game directly Keeps game data without using the console’s main storage, but may require moving it back before play. Games you want to retain without downloading again, but do not need to launch immediately.
Add compatible playable storage Expands the space available for games you can play from the added storage. A larger installed library and fewer transfers.

These options do not necessarily store saved games. Check the platform-specific save-data rules below before deleting or moving anything.

Nintendo Switch: use microSD for software, not saves

A microSD card expands room for downloaded software on the original Nintendo Switch family, including Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Nintendo says downloaded games, updates, and downloadable content can be stored on the card. Game save data, however, is kept in system memory—not on a microSD card or game card. Nintendo’s data FAQ explains what can be stored on each medium.

Archive or delete a game you can redownload

Both options remove downloaded software and leave save data untouched. Archiving preserves the game’s icon on the HOME Menu; selecting it later lets you redownload the software. Deleting also frees space, but removes the icon. To redownload a purchased title, use the Nintendo Account that bought it. See Nintendo’s FAQ and software-management instructions.

Move software between system memory and microSD

If you already have a card, Nintendo provides a way to move eligible software data between it and system memory. On the console, open System Settings > Data Management > Move Data Between System / microSD Card. This is a transfer tool, not a setting that chooses where every future game installs. Save data and some update data cannot be moved this way. Follow Nintendo’s move-data instructions for details.

PS5: choose between playable M.2 storage and USB storage

PS5 offers two distinct ways to add game storage. A compatible internal M.2 SSD can hold and play PS5 and PS4 games. A USB extended-storage drive can retain games outside console storage, but PS5 games on it must be moved back before you can play them. Sony’s storage guide also covers deleting games and managing saved data separately.

PS5 storage choice Can you play PS5 games from it? What to know
Compatible internal M.2 SSD Yes Can download, copy, store, manage, and play PS5 and PS4 games. Verify the current Sony requirements and console compatibility before buying.
USB extended storage No PS5 games must be moved to console storage or an M.2 SSD before play. PS4 games can be played directly from the USB drive.

Install a compatible M.2 SSD for games you want ready to play

If you want expanded storage that can run PS5 games without first moving them back to the console, choose an M.2 SSD that meets Sony’s current specifications. Sony’s M.2 storage-solutions page explains the requirements and installation process. Check that page before purchasing: a drive’s general M.2 label alone does not establish that it is compatible.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Use USB extended storage for games you want to keep but not launch immediately

USB extended storage is useful for retaining games while freeing the console’s main storage. Under Sony’s cited PS5 requirements, the drive must support SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later and have a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Those are requirements in Sony’s USB extended-storage guidance; check the current page for compatibility before choosing a drive. PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage, while PS5 games must be moved back to console or M.2 storage before they can be played.

Delete a purchase without losing access to it

Deleting a purchased PS5 game removes its installed software, not the purchase: Sony says deleted games and applications can be downloaded again from your game library. Saved-data management is separate from game installation, and a USB game-storage drive is not a backup for PS5 saves. Sony describes save-data options, including cloud storage for PlayStation Plus members, in its PS5 storage-management guide.

Xbox: verify current guidance before buying storage

Current Xbox-specific storage options, compatibility requirements, capacities, and transfer or play-from-drive rules are not established here. Microsoft’s storage-management page did not provide readable support details, so do not assume that a drive suitable for another console will work the same way on Xbox. Check Microsoft’s current instructions for your exact Xbox model before buying a drive or moving games.

  • Want Switch software room? Use a microSD card; Switch saves remain in system memory.
  • Want PS5 games playable from added storage? Check Sony’s current compatibility requirements for an M.2 SSD.
  • Want to retain PS5 games but can tolerate a transfer before playing? USB extended storage can hold them; PS5 games must be moved back first.
