How to Manage Steam Downloads and Storage for Large Game Updates

Use Steam’s Download Manager to control when updates run, how much bandwidth they can use, and which download gets priority. Use per-game update policies when one title needs different treatment. If disk space is the problem, add another Steam Library folder and move installed games instead of deleting and downloading them again. For update errors, work through Steam’s own recovery sequence before buying hardware; if an external drive is disconnecting, move the library to a suitable internal drive.

Start with the constraint you actually have

Large updates create three different problems, and each has a different fix. If an update is taking over your connection, manage the queue and apply a bandwidth or time limit. If one game keeps updating at an inconvenient time, change that game’s update policy rather than changing Steam globally. If the update cannot fit, manage library locations and move existing installations to another drive.

Problem Best first action Where to work
Several downloads compete for your connection Pause or reorder downloads, then set a bandwidth limit or automatic-update window Download Manager and Steam Settings > Downloads
One game should update only when you play it Set its policy to “Only update this game when I launch it” Library page > Manage > Properties > Updates
Your current drive is filling up Add another Steam Library folder and move installed games Steam Storage Manager and the game’s Installed Files tab
An update reports an error Restart, clear the download cache when appropriate, repair the library, verify files, and test another region or drive Steam client troubleshooting controls
An external drive keeps disappearing Use a stable internal drive for Steam or the affected game Library location and drive connection

Control the queue with Steam’s Download Manager

The Download Manager is the central place to see active downloads, completed updates, and the order in which queued work will run. Open it from the Downloads link at the bottom of the Steam client, or from the View or Library menus.

Pause work that is in the way

When a large game update is competing with a video call, work transfer, or another download, open Download Manager and pause the item that should wait. You can also pause the game update itself and resume it later. The manager shows progress, so you can tell whether a title is still downloading or has completed its update.

Reorder queued updates

Use the queue controls to move an update higher or lower. Put the title you need soonest first, or move a very large update behind smaller jobs when you need several applications available quickly. Reordering changes the sequence Steam uses; it does not remove the update from your account or uninstall the game.

Start a queued update immediately

A global automatic-update window does not prevent you from acting manually. If an update is queued outside the window, open Download Manager and start it there. Launching a game that has a pending update also forces that game to update immediately, so do not launch it when you only intend to inspect its files or settings.

Use the completed-updates view as a check

After Steam appears to finish, check the completed entries in Download Manager. This helps distinguish a finished update from one that is paused, waiting for disk access, or still queued behind another title.

Set a global bandwidth limit or update schedule

For rules that should apply across your library, open Steam Settings > Downloads. Steam provides a bandwidth-limit control and a setting that restricts automatic game updates to a chosen time window.

Limit Steam’s share of the connection

Apply a bandwidth limit when Steam should remain usable in the background without consuming the connection. The limit is global, so it affects downloads for every game and update while it is enabled. If a particular title needs to finish quickly, temporarily remove or raise the limit, start that update from Download Manager, and restore your normal limit afterward.

Choose a local-time update window

The automatic-update window uses the computer’s local time. For example, a window from midnight to 8 a.m. local time tells Steam to restrict automatic game updates to that period. This is a scheduling rule, not a promise that an update will finish during those hours: the queue, your connection, and the update itself still determine completion.

Remember the two exceptions that matter in practice. You can manually start a queued update from Download Manager at any time, and launching a game with a pending update forces that game to update immediately. If you need a title ready before a meeting or trip, start it deliberately rather than assuming the schedule will have completed it.

Give individual games their own update policy

Global settings are convenient until one game needs different treatment. From the game’s Library page, open Manage > Properties > Updates. Steam offers policies that let you choose between automatic availability, launch-only updating, and higher queue priority.

Policy Use it when What to expect
Always keep this game updated You want the title maintained automatically with the rest of your library Steam treats the game as eligible for automatic updates, subject to your global download timing and bandwidth rules
Only update this game when I launch it You rarely play the game or want to postpone its large patches The pending update remains until you launch the game; launching then triggers the update immediately
High priority A particular title should move ahead of other queued updates Steam gives that game priority in the download queue

Decide whether other updates may run while you play

The Updates section also includes a per-game choice about whether other updates may download while that game is being played. Allowing other updates can prepare the rest of your library in the background, but it may consume connection capacity while you play. Disabling that behavior keeps the connection focused on the active session; you can process the waiting updates later from Download Manager.

Make room with Steam Library folders

If the update cannot fit on the current drive, changing the queue will not create space. Steam supports multiple Library folders, allowing you to keep installations on more than one suitable drive. Open Steam’s Storage Manager to inspect where your games are installed and add another library folder.

Check the practical space constraint

Look at the free space on the drive that contains the game and at the other drives available to Steam. The exact free-space requirement for an update is game-specific and can vary; Steam’s support guidance does not establish one universal amount or a fixed temporary-space rule. Leave enough room for the update process shown by Steam rather than relying on a generic estimate.

If the game is installed on a nearly full drive, moving a less-used title first can be more useful than deleting it. You preserve the installation and free capacity for the update that matters.

Add a second library

  1. Open Steam’s Storage Manager and review the drives and Library folders it currently recognizes.
  2. Choose the option to add a Library folder on a suitable drive.
  3. Confirm the folder so Steam can use it for existing installations and future installs.
  4. Return to the game list and choose which titles should remain on the original drive and which can move.

A new Steam installation can likewise be directed to one of the available Library folders, so you can select the intended drive before installing a large title.

Move an installed game without downloading it again

Once another Library folder exists, Steam can move an installed game between libraries without requiring a new download. This is the preferred response when the game files are already present but the current drive is crowded.

  1. Open the game’s Library page.
  2. Choose Manage > Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Move Install Folder.
  5. Choose the alternate Steam Library folder and confirm the move.
  6. Wait for Steam to complete the transfer before launching the game or starting another disk-heavy operation.

Moving changes the installation location; it is not the same as uninstalling. It also does not guarantee that every future update will succeed, because update errors can come from permissions, network delivery, file integrity, or the destination drive. If the game later appears uninstalled, use Storage Manager to make sure the Library folder containing its files is added and recognized.

Choose internal or external storage carefully

Steam’s support guidance does not recommend external drives for Steam or games because a drive can disconnect. A disconnection can leave Steam unable to recognize the library or unable to complete an update, and it can create performance or recognition problems. For an issue involving an external drive, Steam recommends trying an internal drive.

This is a reliability recommendation, not a universal benchmark comparing every internal and external device. If you are considering new storage, first confirm that your computer supports the drive’s interface and physical format. Steam’s documentation supports using multiple library drives but does not identify a particular brand, model, capacity, or performance tier.

When buying storage is unnecessary

Do not purchase hardware merely because downloads run at an inconvenient time. Queue controls, a bandwidth limit, a local-time schedule, and per-game policies address timing and connection conflicts without changing your computer. Add storage only when the actual constraint is inadequate capacity or an unreliable existing drive.

Recover from “an error occurred while updating”

When Steam reports an error while updating a game, work through the fixes in a deliberate order. After each step, retry the update so you know which change resolved the problem.

1. Restart Steam

Close and reopen the Steam client, then check Download Manager. A restart is the least disruptive first test and can clear a stalled client state.

2. Clear the download cache when appropriate

Use Steam’s clear-download-cache control if the download state appears stuck or corrupted. Clearing the cache does not remove installed games. Steam requires you to sign in again afterward, so have your account credentials or sign-in method available before using this step.

3. Repair the Library folder

Use Steam’s Library-folder repair option for the location that contains the game. Steam lists folder repair as a way to address permissions that prevent updates from writing correctly. Retry the update after the repair completes.

4. Verify the game’s local files

From the game’s Properties, use the local-file verification control. This checks the installation and can replace files that are damaged or missing. Verification is a repair step for the existing installation; it is not a substitute for making room when the drive is full.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Try another download region

If the failure looks related to network delivery, select another Steam download region and retry. A different region tests whether the original delivery endpoint is the source of the problem. Keep the change only if it improves reliability for your connection.

6. Test another Library drive

If the error continues, move the game to another recognized Library folder and retry, or install a small test item on the alternate drive. This helps separate a problem with the game or network from a problem writing to the original drive.

If Steam says the game is uninstalled

Do not immediately download the entire title again. First check whether the game’s files still exist in the expected Library folder. Open Storage Manager and add that existing Library folder if Steam no longer lists it. Once Steam recognizes the folder, the installation may become available again without a complete redownload.

Practical workflows for common situations

You need internet capacity during the day

  1. Open Download Manager and pause or reorder the largest updates.
  2. In Steam Settings > Downloads, set a bandwidth limit that leaves room for your other activity.
  3. Set the automatic-update window to the local hours when updates are least disruptive, such as midnight to 8 a.m.
  4. For a game you do not want maintained automatically, select “Only update this game when I launch it” in its Updates properties.
  5. Before playing that game, allow time for its pending update because launching forces the update immediately.

Your system drive is nearly full

  1. Open Storage Manager and identify a suitable second drive.
  2. Add a Steam Library folder there.
  3. Move games you play less often through Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder.
  4. Recheck free space on the original drive before starting the large update.
  5. Start the update from Download Manager and watch its progress and completion state.

An update fails repeatedly

  1. Restart Steam and retry.
  2. Clear the download cache if the queue remains stuck, then sign in again.
  3. Repair the Library folder and verify the game’s local files.
  4. Try another download region if network delivery appears to be involved.
  5. Move the game to another Library drive if the original location may be the source of the write failure.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Launching to “check” a game while an update is pending: launching forces the update immediately.
  • Deleting a game to free space before creating another library: move it instead when you want to keep the installation.
  • Assuming a schedule blocks every update: manual starts and game launches override the automatic-update window.
  • Clearing the cache without expecting a sign-in: Steam requires authentication again after this operation, although installed games remain.
  • Blaming the network before checking the drive: repair the Library folder and test another drive when Steam cannot write the update.
  • Using a removable drive as if it were permanently attached: Steam warns that disconnects can cause recognition and performance problems.
  • Buying storage without checking compatibility: confirm the computer’s supported interface and physical format before purchasing an internal drive.

What to change first

For a connection problem, start in Download Manager and Steam Settings > Downloads. For a single-game policy, use that game’s Updates properties. For a capacity problem, add a Library folder and move installations through Installed Files. For an update error, follow the restart, cache, repair, verification, region, and alternate-drive sequence. These controls solve the respective timing, storage, and reliability problems without treating every large update as a reason to reinstall the game or replace hardware.
