Scalp itching, dryness, flaking, or redness while using a hair-loss treatment may be irritation from the product, but the same symptoms can also come from residue, an allergy, dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, infection, or another scalp condition. Topical minoxidil is a well-established possible irritant; symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. Follow your product label and clinician’s advice, and seek medical guidance if irritation is significant, persistent, or unexplained.
Could minoxidil be causing the irritation?
Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) lists dryness, scaling, itching, and redness among possible scalp irritation symptoms from topical minoxidil. Its U.S.-based guidance says foam seems to reduce the risk of irritation compared with other topical formulations, but it is not a guarantee that symptoms will stop or that foam is right for everyone.

The AAD’s female-pattern hair-loss guidance is explicit: “If this happens, it’s best to stop using minoxidil and see your dermatologist.” If you develop irritation, follow that guidance, check the instructions for your specific product, and contact your dermatologist or prescriber for advice tailored to you. Minoxidil products and regimens vary; do not assume dosing advice for one product or group applies to yours. The AAD pages do not establish that a shampoo or moisturizer can neutralize a medication reaction.

What else can cause scalp itching or flaking?
Minoxidil is one possibility, not a diagnosis. The AAD notes that an itchy scalp can have several causes, including hair-care product residue, allergic contact dermatitis from a product, dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, infection, and other disorders. A reaction may relate to a hair product rather than the hair-loss medicine itself.
Consider whether symptoms began after introducing or changing a product, but do not try to diagnose the cause from timing or appearance alone. If you cannot tell what is triggering symptoms, or they persist, a dermatologist can assess the scalp and help identify both the scalp problem and the cause of hair loss.

Do not assume dryness is dandruff
A medicated dandruff or psoriasis shampoo is not a universal fix for a dry or irritated scalp. The right treatment depends on the cause, so avoid adding medicated products without symptoms or a diagnosis that supports their use.
Rank #4
- Controls Scalp Fungus: Nizoral shampoo is different because it doesn’t just address the symptoms, it gets right to the root of dandruff as it kills the fungus that causes it
- Dandruff Shampoo For Men and Women: The only over the counter dandruff shampoo with Ketoconazole 1%, a clinically proven, powerful dandruff fighting ingredient
- 10X More Effective: The active ingredient in Nizoral is 10X more effective at killing scalp fungus, the primary cause of dandruff, than the active ingredient in the leading dandruff shampoo based on lab testing (not a product to product comparison)
- Gentle On Hair: Gentle enough to use on color treated, chemically processed, or gray hair
Keep condition-specific advice in context
For diagnosed scalp psoriasis, the AAD suggests alternating a medicated shampoo with a gentle non-medicated shampoo to reduce excessive drying, conditioning after shampooing, and asking a dermatologist if treatment seems too harsh. This is psoriasis-specific advice—not a general instruction for irritation from a hair-loss medicine.

Best Value
- TWICE THE VALUE FOR AN ALWAYS-ON ROUTINE: Dandruff is an ongoing concern. Consistent daily use is what keeps it controlled. Two bottles give you twice the supply so the routine never runs out, in a formula that is gentle, hydrating, and pH balanced.
- 72-HOUR DANDRUFF PROTECTION: Head and Shoulders zinc pyrithione formula stays on your scalp after rinsing, keeping it working between washes. Up to 72 hours of protection, up to 100% dandruff protection, even on non-wash days, with regular use.
- FIGHTS DANDRUFF AT THE SOURCE: Dandruff is caused by Malassezia yeast deep in the scalp, not just at the surface. The 1% pyrithione zinc formula targets it where hides, fighting dandruff at the root cause rather than only treating the visible result.
- DRY SCALP CARE: Helps restore scalp moisture balance and addresses itch associated with dandruff, so the routine works for both dandruff and dry-scalp needs.
- ALMOND OIL COMFORT: Infused with almond oil for a soothing, comforting experience when dry scalp is part of your dandruff routine.
When should you see a dermatologist?
Arrange an assessment if irritation is persistent, severe, or unexplained, or if you are unsure whether to continue a treatment. The AAD advises stopping topical minoxidil and seeing a dermatologist when scalp irritation occurs in its female-pattern guidance. For prescription hair-loss medicines, do not stop, restart, or change the dose on your own; ask the prescribing clinician what to do.
A dermatologist can distinguish among scalp conditions that may look similar and determine whether symptoms relate to a treatment, another product, or a separate disorder. That distinction matters because different causes of hair loss and scalp symptoms call for different treatment. See the AAD’s overview of hair-loss diagnosis and treatment.
