Manage Nasdaq futures risk by sizing from a tolerable dollar loss—not from the margin shown in your account. Define where the trade is invalid, convert that point distance using the contract multiplier, add commissions, fees and possible slippage, and reduce or skip the trade if the resulting loss is too large. A stop order helps express an exit plan, but it cannot guarantee a fill price or a maximum loss.
The E-mini Nasdaq-100 contract (NQ) moves $20 for each index point; Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 (MNQ) moves $2. A 10-point adverse move is therefore $200 on one NQ or $20 on one MNQ, before costs and execution effects. Smaller MNQ contracts make exposure more granular, but both products remain leveraged futures in which losses can exceed the money initially deposited.

Start with risk capital, not your entire account
Futures should be funded only with money genuinely available for speculative loss. The National Futures Association (NFA) states in Investor Best Practices: “First and foremost, because futures trading is highly volatile and very risky, you should only trade futures using risk capital—capital you can afford to lose.”
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) gives a similarly severe warning in Futures Market Basics: “Many individuals lose all of their money, and can be required to pay more than they invested initially.” That possibility matters before choosing a contract, setting a stop or calculating margin. Neither NQ nor MNQ has a built-in maximum loss for a position.

Separate three figures before entering a trade:
- Trade-loss limit: the largest planned dollar loss you can accept on this position.
- Period loss limit: the amount you are willing to lose over a day or another period you choose, after which you stop initiating trades.
- Account survival requirement: the cash and equity needed to withstand adverse movement, variation in margin requirements and ordinary costs without an emergency deposit.
These are personal operating limits, not universal percentages. The available regulator and exchange material does not establish a single “correct” percentage of an account to risk per trade, so do not present a generic percentage as a guarantee of safety.
Know exactly what one NQ or MNQ contract is worth
CME Group’s contract specifications, accessed October 13, 2026, define the dollar exposure as follows:
| Contract | Multiplier | Minimum tick | Tick value | Value per index point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-mini Nasdaq-100 (NQ) | $20 × Nasdaq-100 Index | 0.25 index point | $5 per contract | $20 |
| Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 (MNQ) | $2 × Nasdaq-100 Index | 0.25 index point | $0.50 per contract | $2 |
One MNQ therefore has one-tenth of the nominal point exposure of one NQ. Ten MNQ contracts have the same nominal point exposure as one NQ before commissions, fees, liquidity differences and execution differences. The arithmetic is straightforward:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDollar move = index points moved × dollars per point × number of contracts
For example, a 10-point move against one NQ is 10 × $20 = $200. The same move against one MNQ is 10 × $2 = $20. Those figures describe contract mechanics, not the probability of a move, the likelihood of a loss or a recommended position size. CME describes Micro E-minis as smaller-sized versions of E-minis intended to allow more precise exposure management; the smaller multiplier does not remove leverage or market risk.
Size a trade from the invalidation point
Use the following sequence for every proposed position. It converts a chart or strategy idea into a dollar exposure that can be checked against your own limits.

- Set the maximum acceptable trade loss. Write a dollar amount before looking at the number of contracts. It should come from risk capital and your chosen operating limits, not from the broker’s minimum margin.
- Define the invalidation price. Identify the price at which the trade thesis is no longer valid. Measure the distance from the planned entry to that level in index points, including any difference between the displayed entry and the executable order.
- Convert points to dollars. Multiply the point distance by $20 for each NQ or $2 for each MNQ, then multiply by the number of contracts under consideration.
- Add non-price costs. Include commissions, exchange and broker fees, the spread and a realistic allowance for adverse execution. The amount varies by broker, account and market conditions, so obtain current terms directly from the broker.
- Compare the result with your limit. If the planned loss plus costs is too large, reduce contracts, choose MNQ for finer increments, widen or redesign the trade only if the strategy still makes sense, or do not enter.
- Check account resilience. Confirm available equity, current maintenance requirements and the broker’s house requirements. Make sure an ordinary adverse move will not force an unwanted liquidation or deposit.
- Recalculate after any change. A different entry, stop, contract count or overnight decision changes exposure. Do not treat the original calculation as valid after the trade has been modified.
A useful planning equation is:
Planned loss = points to invalidation × dollars per point × contracts + commissions + fees + slippage allowance
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

If the result exceeds the amount you can accept, the correct risk action is to size down or pass. Adding contracts to recover a loss changes the risk calculation and can accelerate losses.
Worked example: sizing MNQ
Suppose your entry-to-invalidation distance is 15 points and your maximum acceptable trade loss is $300. One MNQ would have a price-risk amount of 15 × $2 = $30 before costs. Ten MNQ would therefore represent $300 of price risk, leaving no room for commissions, fees or slippage. A smaller position—such as eight or nine contracts after checking actual costs—leaves some room below the stated limit. This is arithmetic, not a recommendation to use any particular number of contracts.
Worked example: sizing NQ
With the same 15-point distance, one NQ represents 15 × $20 = $300 before costs. If your limit is $300, one NQ already consumes it, so an entry that requires any cost or execution allowance would exceed the limit. MNQ can make the same nominal exposure adjustable in two-dollar-per-point increments rather than twenty-dollar increments.
Why a smaller contract does not make a trade safe
MNQ reduces the dollar change for each index point, but the index can still move farther than planned, especially around announcements or thin periods. Ten MNQ contracts can create the same point exposure as one NQ. The risk decision is therefore about total contracts and distance, not the word “Micro” in the product name.

Margin is collateral, not your risk budget
The CFTC describes futures margin as a performance bond. It is not a down payment that purchases the full contract, and it is not equivalent to the amount you can lose. Futures positions are marked to market: losses reduce account equity as they occur. If equity falls below a maintenance requirement, the broker or futures commission merchant (FCM) can require additional funds or reduce the position.

Exchange-published margin is only one reference point. An FCM may require more than the exchange minimum, and requirements can change with volatility, contract conditions, the time of day or the broker’s policies. Margin amounts for MNQ and NQ are therefore not fixed figures to copy into a permanent plan. Check the current exchange information and the broker’s customer agreement immediately before trading.
A position that barely meets an initial-margin check can still be too large. Ask instead:
- How many dollars would a 10-, 25- or 50-point move cost at the proposed size?
- How much equity remains after that move and after a possible increase in house margin?
- Could the account meet an intraday or overnight call without using money needed for living expenses?
- What happens if the broker liquidates positions under its risk policy?
Do not describe the margin deposit as the maximum loss. The CFTC expressly warns that losses can exceed the amount initially invested.

A stop is a risk-control instruction that tells the broker what to do if a trigger is reached. It is not a promise that the market will trade at your chosen price. The CFTC explains that contingent stop-loss or stop-limit orders may not execute at the stop price, and in adverse conditions may not execute at all.
Stop-market orders
When triggered, a stop-market order generally becomes a market order. In a fast market, the fill can be materially worse than the trigger because available bids or offers may be several ticks away. That execution difference increases the realized loss beyond the point-distance calculation.
Stop-limit orders
A stop-limit order adds a limit price. It may prevent a fill worse than that limit, but if the market moves through the limit, the order can remain unfilled while the position continues to lose. The exact trigger, protection and order-routing rules depend on the broker and exchange; confirm the current implementation in your trading platform’s documentation.

Plan for movement beyond the stop
Use a slippage allowance in the sizing equation and identify what you will do if the order is partially filled, rejected, disconnected or left working after a session change. A stop should not be used to justify a position whose theoretical loss already exceeds your limit. Nor should a trader assume that placing a stop makes a leveraged position safe during a gap or an unusually rapid move.
Account for nearly continuous access and scheduled events
CME describes NQ access as nearly 24 hours. That extended schedule means a position can be exposed outside the hours when you normally watch prices. CME identifies payrolls, corporate earnings, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Federal Reserve operations among factors that can move the market. None guarantees a direction or a particular move size, but each can coincide with rapid price changes and difficult execution.
Before entry, record:
- When you will be able to monitor and manage the position.
- Whether the position will remain open through a scheduled announcement or a period when you cannot respond.
- Which platform connection, order status and emergency contact you will use if the primary interface fails.
- Whether your broker applies different margin or order policies outside regular hours.
If you cannot monitor a position during a period your plan considers material, reduce exposure or do not open the trade. That is an operational decision, not a prediction about what the announcement will do.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.NQ versus MNQ for risk management
The practical comparison is the exposure each contract adds, the precision with which you can match a dollar limit and the costs and execution conditions of your account.
| Decision factor | NQ | MNQ |
|---|---|---|
| Dollar value per index point | $20 | $2 |
| Value of one 0.25-point tick | $5 | $0.50 |
| Granularity of position sizing | Larger increments; one contract changes exposure by $20 per point | Finer increments; one contract changes exposure by $2 per point |
| Equivalent nominal exposure | One NQ | Ten MNQ |
| Margin requirement | Current amount varies by exchange conditions and broker; not stated as a fixed figure here | Current amount varies by exchange conditions and broker; not stated as a fixed figure here |
| Fees and execution | Check current broker pricing, spread and fills | Check current broker pricing, spread and fills; ten contracts can create different total costs from one NQ |
| Trading-hours exposure | Nearly 24-hour access described by CME | Use the broker’s current schedule and order rules for the specific product |
MNQ is useful when one NQ is too large for the planned dollar risk or when you need to adjust exposure in smaller steps. It is not automatically cheaper in total execution costs, more liquid in every circumstance or less volatile in percentage terms. Compare the actual fee schedule, expected fills and account requirements for your broker.
Use a pre-trade, in-trade and post-trade checklist
Before sending an order
- Confirm the symbol, contract month and whether the order is for NQ or MNQ.
- Write the entry, invalidation level and point distance.
- Calculate price risk with the correct multiplier and contract count.
- Add commissions, fees and a slippage allowance.
- Check current initial and maintenance margin, plus any broker-specific house requirement.
- Confirm the account has risk capital and enough resilience for an adverse move.
- Check scheduled payroll, earnings, CPI or Federal Reserve events and your ability to monitor.
- Decide in advance what ends the trading period after losses or a platform problem.
While the position is open
- Verify that the intended protective order is accepted and working, rather than assuming it is active.
- Watch actual position size after partial fills, scaling or order amendments.
- Do not add contracts solely to recover a loss; recalculate total exposure first.
- Track equity and available margin, not just the displayed unrealized percentage.
- Be prepared for a fill worse than the trigger or for a limit order not to fill.
After exit
- Record the planned point risk, actual fill prices, commissions, fees and realized slippage.
- Compare the result with the period loss limit before considering another trade.
- Investigate rejected, delayed or partially filled orders with the broker and preserve the order record.
- Update future slippage and cost assumptions from your own account data without treating a small sample as a guarantee.
Common risk errors and their fixes
Using the minimum margin as the position size
Error: Trading the largest number of contracts the account can open. Fix: Calculate point risk first, then verify that equity and margin can withstand adverse movement. Margin eligibility is an account-access test, not a loss limit.
Best Value
Calling the stop price a maximum loss
Error: Multiplying the planned stop distance and assuming the result is certain. Fix: Include slippage and the possibility of a worse fill, an unfilled stop-limit order or a rapidly moving market.
Adding contracts after a losing trade
Error: Increasing size to recover the previous loss. Fix: Apply the same pre-trade calculation to the new position and respect the period loss limit. A previous loss does not reduce the next contract’s dollar exposure.
Ignoring costs because the point move looks small
Error: Treating gross point risk as net risk. Fix: Obtain current commission and fee terms, account for spread and include a realistic execution allowance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Assuming MNQ eliminates leverage
Error: Treating a Micro contract as a low-risk product regardless of size. Fix: Multiply the $2 point value by every MNQ contract and remember that ten MNQ have the nominal point exposure of one NQ.
Leaving positions unattended during known event windows
Error: Relying on a stop while unavailable to manage a position through a scheduled release. Fix: Decide before entry whether the position will be reduced, closed or monitored, and verify broker rules for the relevant hours.
A practical decision rule
Take a Nasdaq futures trade only when all of the following are true: the money is risk capital; the invalidation point is explicit; the point distance multiplied by the correct NQ or MNQ value fits your dollar limit after costs and slippage; the account can withstand adverse movement beyond that plan; current broker margin and order rules are understood; and you can monitor the position during the exposure you are accepting. If any condition fails, reduce the position or stand aside.
That process does not predict Nasdaq direction or prevent every loss. It keeps contract size, execution uncertainty and account capacity visible before leverage turns a modest index move into a disproportionate dollar loss.
