Start at Settings > Storage. Remove games or applications you can download again, use a game’s Customize menu to delete unused add-ons or completed sections when that option is available, and treat saved data and captures separately from installed games. If you want several PS5 titles to remain installed and playable, add a compatible internal M.2 SSD. A USB extended-storage drive is excellent for archiving PS5 games and playing PS4 games, but a PS5 game must be copied back to console storage or M.2 storage before it will launch.
First, see what is consuming the drive
PlayStation’s official instruction is: “To check how much free storage space you have, go to the home screen and select Settings > Storage.” The Storage screen separates the space used by installed games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and other console data. Check this view before buying hardware or deleting anything so your decision matches the problem.

The largest category is often Games and Apps, but a full drive is not always caused by one game. Captures can accumulate independently, and saved data follows different backup and transfer rules. Decide whether you need to reclaim a small amount immediately, keep an infrequently played PS5 title available for later, or expand playable capacity for a larger library.

Free space without buying an expansion drive
Delete an installed game or app
- From the home screen, open Settings > Storage.
- Select Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Choose the installed game or application you no longer need locally.
- Select Delete and confirm.
Deleting an installed purchase removes its local files, not your ownership. PlayStation says you can download purchased games again from your game library. This makes deletion a practical first step when the title is easy to reinstall and you need space now. You will need to download the game and any required updates again before playing, so do not use deletion as a substitute for an archive if your connection or time is limited.
Check whether the title is a disc installation, a downloaded purchase, or an application you can reinstall from its original service. In each case, the action removes the local installation; it does not turn a purchased game into an inaccessible account item. If another person uses the console, tell them which titles were removed so they do not mistake an empty tile for lost ownership.
Remove only optional game content
Some games show a Customize option in the Games and Apps view. Open it before deleting the entire title and inspect whether the game offers removable add-ons, language packs, campaign portions, or other completed sections. The exact choices are controlled by each game’s developer; the menu will not appear for every title. Remove only content you recognize as unnecessary, because a later mode or add-on may depend on it.

This selective approach is useful when you still play the base game but have finished a campaign or installed content for a mode you no longer use. It also avoids downloading the entire game again simply to recover one optional component. Read each item name carefully: a similarly named multiplayer pack, language file, or story segment may be needed by someone else who uses the console.
Handle saves and captures as their own data
Installed game data, saved progress, and screenshots or video captures are not interchangeable. Do not treat a USB game drive as a universal place to move all three.
Saved data
PlayStation says PlayStation Plus members can upload saves to cloud storage. Its storage table also lists USB copying for PS4 saves, while it does not list USB-drive storage for PS5 saves. Before deleting a game, confirm that its progress is protected by the save method available to your account and console. Cloud availability depends on PlayStation Plus membership; do not assume that a PS5 save can be copied to a USB drive in the same way as a PS4 save.
Keep a save backup separate from the decision about installed games. Deleting the application is normally reversible through the game library, but losing progress is a different problem and may not be reversible without a backup. If a game has both PS4 and PS5 versions, verify which version contains the progress you care about and do not infer that moving the game files also moves or converts every save.

Screenshots and video clips
Review captures in the Storage view when Games and Apps are not the only large category. Export or retain clips you actually need, then remove redundant local copies through the console’s capture-management controls. Captures are personal media, so check that an important clip is backed up before deleting it; moving a game between drives does not automatically solve capture-space use.
A useful order is to secure irreplaceable saves and clips first, remove duplicate captures next, and only then delete or move game installations. That order reduces the chance of solving a space warning by accidentally removing personal files you cannot recreate.
Use USB extended storage as a PS5 game archive
A USB extended-storage drive is the lower-friction option when you want to keep PS5 game data off the internal drive without installing an expansion card. It is an archive: PS5 titles stored there must be copied to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before they can be played. PS4 games can launch directly from USB extended storage.

These requirements come from PlayStation’s USB extended-storage support page. Sony warns that not every device meeting the broad description is guaranteed to work, so compatibility remains a consideration when choosing a drive.
The practical tradeoff is convenience versus immediate access. USB storage lets you retain a library without occupying playable console space, but every archived PS5 title requires a move back before launch. It is therefore most useful for finished games, occasional replays, or titles you want preserved but do not need every day. A PS4-heavy library benefits more directly because those games can remain on the USB drive while you play them.
Format a new USB drive
- Connect the drive directly to the PS5, not through a USB hub.
- Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage.
- Select Format as USB Extended Storage and follow the on-screen confirmation.
Formatting erases the drive’s existing data. Copy anything important elsewhere before confirming. A drive previously used for other files may need to be reformatted before the PS5 will use it as extended storage. Formatting is a setup operation, not a way to preserve the drive’s existing folders or media library.
Move a game to or from USB storage
- Open Game Library and highlight the game.
- Press the Options button.
- Choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the USB extended-storage destination or the console/M.2 destination, then choose Move.
For a PS5 game, moving it back is the step that restores playability. The archive preserves the installed data, but it does not provide a launch location for PS5 software. A PS4 title can remain on the USB drive and run from there. Keep the drive connected while a transfer is in progress and wait for the console to report completion before starting another move.
Disconnect the drive safely
When the console is on, use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5 before unplugging the drive. Sony warns that improper disconnection can cause data loss or corruption. Do not pull the cable while a transfer is active, and allow the safe-removal command to finish before disconnecting. This applies even when you believe no game is open: the console may still be completing background storage work.

An installed M.2 SSD is the direct expansion route when you want PS5 games to remain installed, update, and launch without a copy-back step. Sony says M.2 storage can download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games. You can choose it as the installation destination and move existing titles to it.

An M.2 drive has a higher entry cost than simply deleting a game, and installation requires opening the expansion area, but it removes the repeated archive-and-copy step for PS5 titles. Budget for the drive and an appropriate heat-dissipation solution rather than comparing capacity alone.
Check compatibility before purchasing
- M.2 SATA SSDs are unsupported.
- A heat-dissipation mechanism is required.
- The SSD and its heatsink must fit the dimensions specified for your PS5 model.
- Sony does not guarantee that every third-party device meeting the described requirements will work.
Do not select a drive solely because a listing says “M.2.” Check the current requirements and the model-specific installation guidance in PlayStation’s M.2 SSD installation guide. A compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with a suitable heat-dissipation solution is the relevant category; no single model is universally assured by the guidance.
Verify the interface, cooling assembly, and total height and width together. A drive can have the right connector yet fail the console’s dimensional limits once its heatsink is attached. Keep the retailer’s return terms in mind, because Sony’s compatibility statement is not a guarantee for every third-party product.

Sony lists a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver among the tools to prepare. Read the instructions for your exact PS5 model before opening the console and use the specified cover and expansion-slot procedure. Do not operate the console with its cover off. If the drive, heatsink, or dimensions do not match the requirements, stop rather than forcing the part into the slot.

Installation is separate from transferring games. First complete the physical installation and let the console recognize and format the drive as directed; then choose an installation location or move titles. Keep the screwdriver as a secondary checklist item, not as a reason to skip the compatibility review.
Set the M.2 drive as an installation location
- After the drive is installed and recognized, open Settings > Storage.
- Select Installation Location.
- Choose the M.2 SSD for the applicable game installation setting.
The setting controls where newly downloaded games are placed. It does not automatically relocate every title already on console storage. Review the destination after a system reset, drive replacement, or major settings change so new downloads do not silently fill the wrong location.
Move existing games to M.2 storage
- Open Game Library and highlight the title.
- Press Options and choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the M.2 SSD as the destination.
- Choose Move and wait for the transfer to complete.
Sony says a game’s data cannot be split between console storage and the M.2 drive. Choose one destination for the title rather than expecting part of the installation to remain in each location. Moving the installation does not replace the need to manage saves and captures separately.
What each move changes—and what it does not
- Deleting a game or app removes its installed files. Purchased access remains in your game library, but the title and its updates must be downloaded again.
- Using Customize removes only the portions the individual game exposes as optional. It is not a system-wide compression feature.
- Moving to USB extended storage preserves PS5 game data as an archive. It does not make that PS5 game launchable from USB.
- Moving to M.2 storage places the complete game on playable expansion storage when the SSD is compliant. A title cannot be divided between console and M.2 locations.
- Removing captures affects your media library, not the installed game. Back up clips before deleting them.
- Managing saves is a separate protection task. Use the cloud option available to PlayStation Plus members and follow PlayStation’s distinct guidance for PS4 save copying.
Understanding these boundaries prevents a common mistake: moving a game and assuming its saves, captures, or launch permissions changed with it.
Choose the expansion method that fits your play pattern
Use this decision framework after clearing space with deletion and selective content removal:
- Choose USB extended storage when the priority is inexpensive, removable archiving of PS5 titles you are not currently playing, or direct play of PS4 games. Plan for a copy-back before launching an archived PS5 game.
- Choose an M.2 SSD when the priority is keeping PS5 games installed and immediately playable, with no archive transfer before launch. Accept the hardware cost, compatibility checks, and physical installation.
- Choose neither immediately when captures or removable add-ons are consuming the space. Cleaning those categories may solve the problem without changing your storage setup.
Both expansion routes can hold PS5 and PS4 game data. Their decisive difference is where a PS5 game is allowed to run: USB is an archive, while a compliant M.2 SSD is playable storage.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Buying a drive before checking the Storage screen
If the console is full because of captures or optional add-ons, an expansion drive may address the wrong category. Return to Settings > Storage, identify the largest category, and apply the least disruptive fix first.

The game can be present on the USB drive and still be unavailable to launch. Use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps to copy it to console storage or a compliant M.2 SSD, then launch it from that destination.
Formatting the wrong drive
Formatting as USB Extended Storage erases existing data. Verify the selected device and back up personal files before confirming. If the drive contains irreplaceable files, cancel and copy them elsewhere first.
Disconnecting during activity
Use the safe-removal command rather than unplugging a live drive. An interruption can produce data loss or corruption and may force another format or download.

Assuming every M.2 listing fits
M.2 is a form factor, not a guarantee of PS5 compatibility. SATA models are unsupported, and the heat-dissipation hardware must fit the console’s specified dimensions. Check Sony’s current guide and your PS5 model before installation.

Sony’s USB extended-storage requirements say the drive must not be connected through a USB hub. Connect it directly to the console and remember that only one USB extended-storage drive can be active at a time.
Confusing a full drive with a lost purchase
A deleted title may disappear from local storage while remaining downloadable in the game library. Sign in to the account that owns the game before troubleshooting access, and distinguish a missing installation from a licensing or account problem.
