To make room for another PS Plus Extra game, open Settings > Storage, remove or move the largest items, and check the installation location before downloading. Delete installed game data—not saved data—and you can download purchased games again from your Game Library. For PS5 games you play regularly, an installed compatible M.2 SSD is the playable expansion; USB extended storage is best used as an archive because PS5 games must be copied back before they launch.
Start by checking what is using your PS5 storage
Open Settings > Storage before deleting anything. The storage screen separates console storage from any USB extended storage or installed M.2 SSD and shows the categories consuming space. Check Games and Apps, media, and saved-data areas rather than guessing which title is responsible.

Large games are often the quickest way to recover room, but captures, media applications, and multiple versions of a title can also matter. Sort the games list by size when that option is available, then decide which titles are actively played, which can be archived, and which can be removed because they are easy to download again.

Remove installed game files
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Select Console Storage.
- Open Games and Apps.
- Select one or more titles you no longer need on the internal drive.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
This removes the installed game data from that storage location. Sony’s storage guidance treats game data and saved data as separate categories, so deleting a game is not the same operation as deleting its save. Do not select a saved-data category if your goal is only to reclaim installation space.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Remove only optional content when the menu offers it
Some games show Customize instead of, or in addition to, a simple delete choice. Use it to remove selected add-ons or portions of a game that you no longer use, such as an installed language pack, campaign component, or multiplayer component when the developer has exposed those choices. The available components differ by title; do not assume every game supports partial removal.
What happens after deletion
Purchased games that you delete remain available to download again from your Game Library, according to Sony. A PS Plus Extra title is different from a permanent purchase: the Game Catalog changes over time and availability can vary by region. If a catalog title leaves the service, you may no longer be able to launch it through the subscription unless you own it separately. Check the title’s current catalog status before treating a deletion as temporary.
USB extended storage versus an M.2 SSD
Both options reduce pressure on the console’s built-in space, but they serve different purposes. USB extended storage is a removable holding area. An installed, compatible M.2 SSD becomes another playable storage location for PS5 and PS4 games.
| Decision point | USB extended storage | Installed M.2 SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Can a PS5 game launch directly? | No. Copy the PS5 game back to console storage or the M.2 SSD first. | Yes, once the SSD is installed and recognized by the PS5. |
| Can a PS4 game launch directly? | Yes. PS4 games can be played from USB extended storage. | Yes. The M.2 SSD can download, copy, and launch PS4 games. |
| Best role | Archive finished or infrequently played games and move them between compatible consoles. | Permanent expansion for a library you want to install and play without shuttling PS5 data. |
| Moving existing games | Use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps; copy PS5 titles back before playing. | Use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps to relocate titles to the SSD. |
| Capacity and cost | Varies by drive capacity, model, and seller; there is no single universal price. | Varies by compatible SSD capacity, model, heatsink design, and seller; verify the current listing and console fit. |
| Portability | External and removable, provided it is handled and connected correctly. | Installed inside the console and not intended as a quick swap during normal use. |
When USB extended storage is the right choice
Choose USB extended storage when you want to keep games without occupying the console’s playable space. It is particularly useful for PS5 games you have finished but may return to later: move them to USB, then copy one back when you are ready. PS4 games can stay on the USB drive and run there, which makes the device more convenient for a backward-compatible library.
Sony’s guidance is explicit: “PS5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5 game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” Treat the drive as an archive for PS5 titles, not as a second PS5 game launcher.

When an M.2 SSD is the right choice
An installed compatible M.2 SSD is the better fit when you routinely install PS5 games from the PS Plus Extra Game Catalog and want them available without a copy-back step. Sony says M.2 SSD storage can be used to “download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps.”
Compatibility matters. Confirm the current PS5 requirements, usable capacity, physical clearance, and heatsink arrangement before buying. Product specifications and prices change, and a drive that fits a listing’s generic description may still be unsuitable if its interface or cooling solution does not meet the console’s requirements. Follow the console’s installation and formatting prompts; formatting erases data already on the drive.

Install the next PS Plus Extra game with a deliberate workflow
- Measure the available space. In Settings > Storage, note free space in console storage and any expansion device. Compare that amount with the game’s displayed installation requirement, leaving headroom for updates.
- Identify removable items. Open Console Storage > Games and Apps and sort through the largest titles. Include media and captures in your review if the game list does not explain the missing space.
- Use partial cleanup first. Select Customize where offered and remove only add-ons or game portions you no longer need. This can preserve the main installation while recovering some space.
- Delete or move dormant games. Delete games that you can redownload and do not need immediately, or choose Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps to place them on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD.
- Set the intended installation location. If an M.2 SSD is installed, open Settings > Storage > Installation Location and select it for PS5 games. Check this setting before beginning a large download; otherwise the console may fill its internal storage first.
- Install from the Extra catalog. Open the PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog, select the game, and start the download. Catalog membership and title availability are time- and region-sensitive, so the listing shown on your account is the controlling one.
- Confirm where the game landed. After installation, return to the storage screen and verify that the title is on console storage or the selected M.2 SSD. If it is on USB, a PS5 version will need to be copied before launching.
- Protect saves separately. Before a major cleanup, confirm that recent saves are synchronized to PlayStation Plus cloud storage or copied through the PS5’s saved-data tools. Do not use the saved-data deletion menu merely to remove an installed game.
How to move games between storage locations
Move a game to USB extended storage
From Game Library, highlight the title, press the Options button, and choose Move Games and Apps. Select the USB extended-storage destination and confirm. A PS5 game moved this way remains archived until you copy it back to console storage or an M.2 SSD. A PS4 game can remain on USB and be launched there.
If the move option is unavailable, check that the USB drive is connected, recognized under Settings > Storage, and formatted as extended storage. Do not disconnect it while data is moving or while a game on it is running.
Move a game to an M.2 SSD
Use the same Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps path, then select the installed M.2 SSD as the destination. You can also control where future games install through Settings > Storage > Installation Location. Once the transfer finishes, the PS5 version can launch from the M.2 SSD without first returning to internal storage.

Keep saved data safe while managing installations
Your save is your progress; the installed game is the software needed to run it. Removing the latter does not intentionally remove the former when you stay in Games and Apps. The risk appears when someone opens a saved-data menu and deletes the wrong category, or when a save exists only locally and the console later suffers a storage failure.

PlayStation Plus support guidance lists 100 GB of cloud storage for saved data on PS5 and PS4 consoles. Allow the console to synchronize recent saves before deleting or moving a game, and verify the upload status in the saved-data settings. Cloud storage protects progress, not the game installation itself; you still need to download or copy the game before playing.
Understand the limits of a cloud copy
Cloud synchronization does not make an unavailable Game Catalog title playable. If a PS Plus Extra game leaves the catalog, its save can remain in cloud storage, but access to the game depends on owning it or having a current entitlement. Save files can also be tied to the correct account and game edition, so restore them only to the account and version that created them.
Plan capacity without relying on an average game size
There is no official universal number for how many PS Plus Extra games fit on a PS5. Install sizes vary substantially between games, editions, language packs, downloadable content, and later updates. Instead of planning around an average, use the size shown on your console for the exact title and keep additional free space for patches and temporary installation work.
- Keep frequently played PS5 games on console storage or the M.2 SSD so they launch immediately.
- Archive completed PS5 games on USB extended storage when you want to preserve them without paying for another playable location.
- Leave PS4 games on USB when you are comfortable with their performance and the drive remains connected.
- Reserve internal space for updates and for titles that cannot be played from USB.
- Review add-ons with Customize before deleting an entire installation.
Capacity and cost are personal trade-offs: a larger drive costs more, while a smaller device may require more frequent shuffling. Compare the capacity you actually need with the drive’s current price, compatibility, and warranty rather than choosing solely by the advertised terabyte figure.

Troubleshooting common storage problems
The PS5 says there is not enough room even after deleting a game
Return to Settings > Storage and check each category. Captures, media, another installed version, or update data may account for the remaining usage. Empty the relevant media or capture items only after confirming they are backed up elsewhere. Also check whether the download is targeting console storage instead of an M.2 SSD.
A PS5 game on USB shows a play button but will not start
That behavior is expected for PS5 software on USB extended storage. Use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps to copy it to console storage or an M.2 SSD, then launch it from that playable location.
A PS4 game will not launch from the USB drive
Confirm that the drive appears under Settings > Storage, remains connected directly to the console, and was not unplugged during a transfer. If the game was moved but the installation is incomplete or corrupted, move it back or reinstall it, then test again.
The M.2 SSD is missing as an installation location
Check that the SSD was installed correctly, formatted by the PS5, and recognized in the storage menu. If it is not listed, shut down the console and recheck the physical installation and compatibility requirements. Do not assume that any M.2 drive qualifies; interface, capacity, and heatsink clearance must match the current PS5 guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA save is missing after reinstalling a game
Make sure you are using the same PlayStation account and the same game edition. Open the saved-data management screen and check the console and cloud copies. If a cloud copy exists, download it before starting a new game; downloading the game itself does not automatically restore every save.

A practical storage routine for a growing Extra library
After finishing a game
Decide whether you are likely to return soon. Keep it on the M.2 SSD if you want immediate access, move it to USB if it is a PS5 title you want to archive, or delete it if redownloading is acceptable. Leave its saved data alone unless you intentionally want to remove the progress.
Before downloading a large title
Check the current free-space figure, installation location, and the title’s catalog availability. Remove optional content first, then move or delete the least-used installation. Confirm cloud synchronization before any saved-data operation.
When rotating several games
Use a simple division: internal storage or M.2 SSD for active PS5 games, USB for PS5 archives and playable PS4 games, and cloud storage for saves. This avoids repeatedly downloading the same titles while keeping the console’s fastest playable space available for the games you actually use.
Recommended Free Tools
Which expansion approach should you choose?
- Choose USB extended storage if your priority is inexpensive, removable archiving and you mostly need to store PS5 games or play PS4 games directly.
- Choose an M.2 SSD if your priority is installing and launching PS5 games without a copy-back step.
- Use both if your Extra library is large: keep active titles on the M.2 SSD and rotate completed titles through USB.
- Choose neither immediately if deleting a few dormant games and removing unused add-ons already provides enough room; expansion is useful, not mandatory.
Menu labels can vary with PS5 system software. Catalog contents, regional eligibility, and subscription terms can change, so use the options and titles currently shown on your console when following these steps.
