How to manage PS5 storage for a 100-hour open-world RPG

A 100-hour playtime tells you how long the RPG may keep you busy, not how much disk space its installation needs. Before deleting anything or buying storage, open Settings > Storage on your PS5 and record the available space. Then choose among three practical approaches: remove games or optional content you can restore later, install a compatible M.2 SSD so PS5 games remain launchable, or use USB extended storage as an archive for games you are not currently playing. Keep saved data separate from game installations, because save protection uses different storage rules.

Start with the space your console actually has

On the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > Storage. The storage screen breaks down what is consuming console space, including games and apps, media and saved data. Check the free-space figure before making a decision; the unnamed RPG’s 100-hour length does not establish its download size, patch size or required free space.

Installation requirements can vary by edition, language packs, updates and optional content. Look up the game’s current listing or the download information shown by your console, then compare that figure with the free space you just recorded. Leave additional headroom for updates and other games you want available rather than treating the game’s initial download as the only requirement.

Sony’s storage-management instructions are available at How to manage storage space on your PS5 console. Menu names and storage behavior can change with system software, so use the labels shown on your console if they differ from an older guide.

Free space without buying hardware

Delete games you can reinstall

Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. Sort through the largest entries and remove games you are not playing. Deleting an installed game removes its local installation, not your ownership. Purchased items can be downloaded again from your game library when you want them back.

This is usually the fastest way to make room for a large RPG. It is also reversible, provided you can sign in to the account that owns the game and have enough time and network bandwidth to download it again. Do not confuse deleting an installation with deleting an account purchase; the library is where you restore the software.

Use Customize when a game offers it

Some PS5 games display a Customize control in the Games and Apps storage view. Depending on the title, this can expose removable add-ons, language packs or completed portions of a game while retaining the core installation. Availability is game-specific, so a missing Customize option does not indicate a console problem.

Review each item in that control before confirming. Remove only content you recognize as optional or finished, and keep any component needed for the mode you still play. If the game later requests a deleted component, you can generally retrieve it through the game or library download flow.

Do not format a drive by mistake

Deleting an individual game is different from formatting a storage drive. Formatting erases the drive’s contents, so copy anything you intend to keep before confirming a format command. A drive used for extended storage should be treated as a data volume, not as a disposable cache.

Choose expansion based on how you play

The key question is whether the RPG must be ready to launch without moving files. The following options have different roles:

Option Can a PS5 game launch directly? Best use Important limit
Delete or customize existing games Not applicable Recover space immediately without purchasing hardware Deleted purchases must be downloaded again; Customize depends on the individual game
Compatible M.2 SSD Yes Keep the RPG and other PS5 games installed and ready It must meet Sony’s current size, performance and cooling requirements
USB extended storage No Archive games that you are not playing and move them back later A PS5 game must be copied to console storage or M.2 storage before launch
PlayStation Plus cloud storage No; it stores saves, not installations Protect or synchronize saved data for subscribers A PlayStation Plus subscription is required

Use an M.2 SSD when the RPG should stay playable

An M.2 SSD is the direct expansion route when you want PS5 games to remain installed and launchable. After a compatible drive is installed, PS5 games can be downloaded to it, moved there from console storage and started from it. Sony says to check the current M.2 specifications and provide effective heat dissipation before installation; compatibility is not determined by the M.2 label alone.

Capacity should follow your actual library rather than the RPG’s playtime. Add the game’s stated installation requirement to the space needed for updates and the other titles you want ready. Sony lists compatible M.2 expansion capacity up to 8 TB on its storage-solutions page, but the drive still has to meet the console’s current performance, physical-fit and cooling rules.

Verify the drive before opening the console

  • Read Sony’s current M.2 SSD installation guide and its PS5 and PS4 storage-solutions page.
  • Confirm the drive’s capacity and performance fall within the specifications shown on those live pages.
  • Confirm that the model has an effective heat-dissipation structure, such as a compatible heatsink, and that its total dimensions fit the PS5 expansion bay.
  • Have a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver available, as Sony lists that tool in the installation preparation.
  • Back up important saves and shut down the console completely before opening it. Follow the console-specific installation sequence rather than forcing a cover or screw.

Set the installation destination

Once the drive is installed and formatted by the PS5, choose where new games go under Settings > Storage > Installation Location. Set PS5 games to the M.2 storage when you want future downloads there. You can change the destination later if your priorities change.

Move an installed game

From the game library, highlight the installed title, press the Options button on the controller and choose Move Games and Apps. Select the RPG and the M.2 destination, then start the transfer. The move changes where the installation is stored; it does not create a second playable copy.

Use USB extended storage as an archive

USB extended storage is useful when you want to retain games without keeping all of them on the console or M.2 drive. Sony’s requirements call for a SuperSpeed USB connection of 5 Gbps or later, a capacity from 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum, and a direct connection to the PS5 rather than a USB hub. Sony also warns that compatibility is not guaranteed for every device.

Format a suitable drive as USB extended storage through the PS5’s storage settings, then move games using the game library’s Options > Move Games and Apps command. Keep the drive connected when you want to inspect or transfer its contents.

Plan for the copy-back step

A PS5 game held on USB extended storage is an archive, not a launch location. Before playing the RPG, copy it back to the PS5’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD. That transfer takes time and requires enough free space at the destination, so USB is best for titles you can leave parked between play sessions.

PS4 games have different behavior: Sony allows compatible PS4 games to run directly from USB extended storage. Do not apply that convenience to a PS5 version of the same title; check which version is installed before assuming it can launch from the external drive.

Remove the drive safely

Stop any game or transfer using the drive before disconnecting it, and use the PS5’s storage controls to stop or safely remove extended storage. Pulling the cable during a write can corrupt the installation or the drive’s file system. If the console reports that the drive needs repair, leave it connected and follow the on-screen process instead of repeatedly unplugging it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep saved data separate from the game files

Your save files are distinct from the RPG installation. Deleting a game from Games and Apps does not represent a request to erase its saved data, but you should still verify the saved-data menu before removing anything important.

For PS5 and PS4 saves, a PlayStation Plus member can upload saved data to cloud storage and synchronize it on supported consoles. Cloud storage requires the subscription; it does not provide space for the game installation itself.

Sony’s storage guidance also distinguishes PS4 save handling: PS4 saved data can be copied to cloud storage or a USB drive. The same Sony table does not list ordinary USB copying as the equivalent backup route for PS5 saved data, so do not assume that plugging in a USB drive creates a PS5-save backup. Use the supported cloud workflow and confirm the upload completed before deleting local data.

A practical installation sequence

  1. Measure first. Open Settings > Storage and write down free space, the largest installed games and the amount occupied by media and saved data.
  2. Confirm the RPG’s actual requirement. Check the console’s download information or the current store listing for the specific edition, then allow room for updates and any content you plan to install.
  3. Recover no-cost space. In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, delete games you can reinstall. Open Customize where it appears and remove only optional or completed content.
  4. Protect saves. Upload PS5 or PS4 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage if you subscribe, and verify the upload before changing installations.
  5. Pick the storage path. Choose a compatible M.2 SSD if the RPG and other PS5 titles must remain launchable. Choose USB extended storage if you are comfortable moving a title back before playing it.
  6. Prepare an M.2 installation. Check Sony’s live specifications, cooling guidance and fit requirements, gather a #1 Phillips screwdriver, power down fully and install the drive according to the official guide.
  7. Set the destination. Use Settings > Storage > Installation Location to direct new PS5 downloads to the M.2 drive, or use Options > Move Games and Apps to relocate the installed RPG.
  8. For USB, format and transfer. Connect the qualifying drive directly, format it as extended storage when prompted and move games you are not playing. Copy the RPG back to console or M.2 storage before launch.
  9. Recheck after installation. Return to the Storage screen and confirm that the destination still has room for patches, downloadable content and the next game you expect to install.

How to decide without knowing the RPG’s size

Choose deletion when your library is temporary

If you rotate through a few games and have reliable broadband, deleting finished titles is the simplest approach. You pay nothing, avoid opening the console and can restore purchases from the library. The trade-off is the time and bandwidth required for a future redownload.

Choose M.2 storage for an always-ready library

An M.2 SSD fits a library in which several PS5 games need to be playable without transfers. It requires checking current Sony specifications and physically installing the drive, but it removes the USB copy-back step for PS5 games. Select capacity by counting the games and updates you intend to keep, not by converting a 100-hour campaign into a guessed number of gigabytes.

Choose USB for an infrequently played backlog

USB extended storage suits games you want to retain but rarely launch. It can preserve the installed data while console and M.2 space serve active games. The operational cost is the transfer whenever you switch back to a parked PS5 title, plus the need to manage safe removal.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Assuming playtime predicts download size

Symptom: You buy or format a drive based only on the RPG being described as “100-hour.” Fix: Check the specific game’s current installation information and your own library plan. Playtime is not a storage specification.

Buying an M.2 drive without checking cooling or fit

Symptom: The drive has an M.2 form factor but does not meet the PS5’s current requirements or cannot fit with its heat-dissipation hardware. Fix: Compare the exact model with Sony’s live installation and storage-solutions pages before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting PS5 games to run from USB

Symptom: The title appears on the external drive but the PS5 asks you to copy it before playing. Fix: Leave enough console or M.2 space for the copy-back operation, or move less-used games off that destination first.

Deleting saves with a game

Symptom: A storage cleanup is followed by missing progress. Fix: Treat saved data as its own category, upload supported saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage and verify the backup before removing local data.

Disconnecting USB storage during activity

Symptom: The console reports corruption or asks to repair the drive. Fix: Stop transfers and use the PS5’s safe-removal control before unplugging. Avoid hubs and connect the drive directly.

What the available specifications do—and do not—tell you

Specification What it establishes What it does not establish
Up to 8 TB for compatible M.2 expansion Sony’s stated upper capacity for a compatible M.2 expansion solution The capacity required by this unnamed RPG or by your complete library
250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum for USB extended storage The supported USB extended-storage capacity range in Sony’s guide That every drive in the range is compatible or that PS5 games launch from it
SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later The connection class Sony calls for when using USB extended storage A guaranteed transfer time or performance level for a particular drive

These figures are product requirements and capabilities, not measurements of typical game sizes. Sony’s current pages should be checked again before purchasing because menu labels, compatibility lists and specifications may change.

Bottom line for a large, long RPG

Measure free space first, remove games or optional content you can restore, and keep saves separate from installations. If the RPG must remain ready to launch alongside other PS5 games, use a compatible, properly cooled M.2 SSD and set it as an installation destination. If it is part of a backlog, USB extended storage can hold it until you copy it back. Without the RPG’s name and current install size, no honest recommendation can specify how many terabytes you need.
