Then use the least disruptive option: remove an unused game or app, use Customize to remove optional content where available, archive games on USB extended storage, or install a compatible M.2 SSD if you want more playable space. Installed game files, saved data, and screenshots are separate storage categories, so do not delete saves just to make room for an installation.
Start with the PS5’s actual free-space figure
Do not estimate how much room you have from the size printed on the console or from a game’s advertised download size. Open Settings > Storage and read the console’s reported free capacity. That number is the starting point for every cleanup decision and is the figure to check again after you make changes.

The storage screen separates categories such as games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and other system data. This matters because removing an installed game is a different operation from deleting its saved data. Begin with the category using the most space, but keep saves and personal media out of the cleanup unless you have deliberately backed them up or no longer need them.

Free space without buying hardware
Delete an installed game or app you can download again
The quickest way to reclaim internal capacity is to remove an installed game or application you are not using. Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select an item, and choose the delete command. Removing the local installation does not cancel your purchase or subscription entitlement. Sony states that you can re-download deleted purchases from your game library whenever you like: official storage guidance.
Deletion removes the installed program and its local game files. It is therefore a good choice when the game is easy to download again, you have a reliable internet connection, and you do not need it available immediately. It is less attractive if you are trying to avoid a long download, have a data cap, or expect to play the title again soon.
Look for Customize before deleting a whole game
Some games show a Customize option in the Games and Apps storage screen. When present, it may let you remove selected add-ons or portions of a game that you no longer need, such as completed content or an optional language pack, while leaving the rest installed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe available choices are game-specific. A title may offer no selective removal, or it may list only certain add-ons. Read the item names and sizes before confirming; do not assume that every campaign, multiplayer component, or language package can be restored independently. If Customize is not shown, the console is not offering that selective-removal workflow for that installation.
Do not treat saved data as expendable install data
Saved games are the progress files you create while playing. They are not the same thing as the installed game or its downloadable content. If you remove a game from Games and Apps, do not follow up by deleting its saved data unless you intentionally want to remove your progress.
PlayStation Plus members can use cloud storage for saved data. Sony’s storage guide also describes copying PS4 saved data to a USB drive, while PS5 saved data is not copied to a USB drive in the same way. The practical rule is simple: use the save-data menu and the backup method Sony documents for your console generation; do not assume that a USB game drive is a PS5-save backup.

Use USB extended storage as an archive
What USB extended storage is for
A compatible USB drive formatted as USB extended storage can hold installed games while freeing space on the PS5’s internal storage. This is useful when you want to keep a game locally but are willing to move it off the console until you decide to play it again.

This is not the same as plugging in an ordinary flash drive for photos or backups. The PS5 must format the drive as extended storage, and formatting erases the drive’s existing contents. Copy anything important from the drive before you format it.
Format and move games
- Connect the USB drive to the PS5 and follow the console’s prompt to format it as extended storage. The formatting process deletes all existing data on that drive.
- After formatting, open Game Library, highlight the game, press the options button, and choose the move command for games and apps. Sony’s current instructions describe moving items through Game Library > Move Games and Apps.
- Alternatively, use Settings > Storage to select games and apps and move eligible items between console storage and USB extended storage.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting the drive. Keep the drive connected whenever the console is using it, and use the PS5’s safe-disconnect option before unplugging it.
Sony lists connection requirements and safe-disconnection steps on its USB extended storage support page. Check that page for the requirements that apply to your drive and console software rather than relying on a generic USB specification.
Know the playback limitation
PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. PS5 games cannot. Sony’s wording is explicit: “To play PS5 games, you need to move game data from your USB extended storage drive back to your PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage.” The full statement appears on the USB extended storage on PS5 consoles page.
That makes USB extended storage an archive, not an expansion of immediately playable PS5 capacity. When you want to launch an archived PS5 title, copy it back to internal console storage or an installed M.2 SSD first. The transfer is usually preferable to downloading the entire game again, but it still takes time and requires enough free space at the destination.

What an M.2 SSD changes
An eligible M.2 NVMe SSD installed in the PS5’s expansion slot can store and run PS5 and PS4 games. Unlike USB extended storage, it can be selected as an installation location for games you intend to play from expanded storage. Sony also supports downloading games to M.2 storage and moving existing games there.

This is the appropriate route when deleting and archiving keep creating the same problem: you want a larger library available to launch without copying PS5 titles back and forth. It costs more and requires opening the console’s expansion area, so it is a capacity upgrade rather than a quick cleanup.
Verify compatibility before buying
Do not choose an M.2 drive from its capacity or brand name alone. Sony requires an M.2 SSD to meet current physical, interface, performance, cooling and size requirements, and those requirements must match your PS5 model and system software. Review Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guide immediately before purchase and compare the complete model specification, including any required heatsink, with Sony’s list.
The guide covers installing the drive, formatting it, moving games, and selecting it as an installation location. Follow that procedure exactly. A drive that fits physically but fails the required performance or thermal conditions is not a safe assumption for PS5 use.
When M.2 is preferable to USB
- Choose USB extended storage when your main goal is to keep games without redownloading them and you are comfortable copying PS5 titles back before play.
- Choose an M.2 SSD when you want PS5 games to remain playable from expanded storage and want a long-term answer to recurring capacity limits.
- Use the internal console storage or M.2 storage as the destination for a PS5 game you plan to launch; USB extended storage is the holding location.
Sony’s general PS5 support information describes M.2 storage as usable for downloading, copying and launching PS5 and PS4 games: PlayStation 5 Support.
Choose the least disruptive option
| Option | What happens to the data | Can PS5 games run there? | Extra hardware or service | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete a game or app | The installed files are removed; the purchase remains available in your game library. | Not until downloaded and installed again. | None; a later download may use your internet connection and data allowance. | Fastest recovery when you can reinstall later. |
| Customize a game | Selected add-ons or portions are removed when that title supports the feature. | Yes, for the parts left installed. | None. | Free space with less disruption than deleting the whole installation. |
| USB extended storage | Games are retained on a formatted USB drive; formatting erases the drive first. | No. Copy PS5 data back to console or M.2 storage before play. | Compatible USB drive. | Archiving PS5 games and playing PS4 games directly from the drive. |
| M.2 SSD | Games are retained on installed expansion storage. | Yes, when the drive meets Sony’s requirements and is installed correctly. | Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD and installation. | Adding a larger library that remains playable from expanded storage. |
No official universal number tells every PS5 owner how many gigabytes to leave free before installing a large game. The required space depends on the particular game and the console’s current system data. Use the game’s installation prompt together with the free-space figure in Settings > Storage, and confirm that figure after cleanup rather than relying on a general rule.

- Record the starting capacity. Open Settings > Storage and note the reported free space. This gives you a before-and-after check.
- Inspect Games and Apps. Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps and sort through the installed titles and applications.
- Check Customize. If a game offers Customize, remove only optional or completed content you no longer need. Confirm each selection before applying it.
- Delete a re-downloadable item. If selective removal is unavailable, remove an unused game or app whose purchase you can access from your library later.
- Archive instead of deleting when download time matters. Move an installed title to USB extended storage. Remember that a PS5 title stored there must be copied back before it can be played.
- Use M.2 storage for regular play. If a compatible M.2 SSD is already installed, move or install the game there and select that location when the console offers the choice.
- Protect saves and captures separately. Leave saved data alone unless you have chosen an appropriate backup or cloud-storage method. Copy screenshots and video clips to USB if you want to preserve them while clearing the console.
- Check capacity again. Return to Settings > Storage and verify the new free-space figure before restarting the installation.
- Start the installation and watch for a new requirement. If the console still reports insufficient capacity, read the exact message and use the troubleshooting branches below rather than deleting random files.
Troubleshoot common storage problems
The console still says there is not enough space
Reopen Settings > Storage after every deletion or transfer. The free-space figure may not match your expectation if the operation is still processing, if another download is in progress, or if the game requires additional working space during installation. The console’s own message is the authoritative check for that installation; there is no single extra-space allowance that applies to every title.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA PS5 game is on USB but will not start
This is expected behavior, not necessarily a failed drive. PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can run. Move the game back, wait for the transfer to complete, and then launch it from the destination storage.
The USB drive asks to be formatted
Formatting is required before a drive becomes PS5 extended storage, but it erases the drive. Stop if the drive contains files you need, copy those files elsewhere, and only then approve formatting. A USB drive used for extended storage should not be unplugged while formatting or while the PS5 is reading or writing game data.
A game has no Customize option
Selective removal is not available for every title. If the option is absent, choose another installed game or app to delete, move eligible games to USB, or use M.2 storage. Do not delete saved data as a substitute for removing optional install content.
You cannot find a deleted purchase
Deletion removes the local installation, not the entitlement. Open your game library while signed in to the account that owns the game and look for the download option. If the item was supplied through a subscription, its availability can depend on that subscription and the title’s current catalog status; ownership and subscription access are separate from the storage operation.
The M.2 installation does not offer the expected location
Confirm that the SSD was installed and formatted through the PS5’s M.2 storage workflow and that the complete drive model meets Sony’s current requirements. Use the steps in Sony’s M.2 SSD guide. Do not infer compatibility from a similar-looking drive or from capacity alone.

Keep screenshots and clips from consuming the space you need
Game captures can accumulate even when your installed-game list looks reasonable. Sony’s storage guidance supports copying screenshots and video clips to a USB drive. Export captures you want to keep, verify that the copies open on another device, and then remove unneeded local media through the PS5’s media or storage controls.
Use this as a separate cleanup pass from game management. Moving a clip does not make a PS5 game playable from USB, and copying a capture is not a substitute for backing up PS5 saved data. Each file type has its own handling rules.
Questions to settle before you choose
- Need the game playable immediately? Prefer internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD. USB is an archive for PS5 titles.
- Trying to avoid a download? Move the installed game to USB rather than deleting it, accepting the copy-back step later.
- Only a small amount of space is missing? Check Customize and remove optional content before touching an entire game.
- Unsure whether a file is safe to remove? Leave saved data alone and inspect the category and item name first.
- Need a lasting capacity increase? Verify an M.2 SSD against Sony’s current requirements instead of buying an unverified model.
What the official guidance does not establish
Sony’s storage pages do not publish a universal typical PS5 game size, a guaranteed amount of space recovered by a particular cleanup, or one mandatory number of free gigabytes that every installation needs. Those values vary by game, updates, language packs, add-ons and system data. A responsible cleanup therefore ends with the console’s reported free capacity and the installation’s own requirement, not a promise that a fixed amount of space will be enough.
Final decision
For a one-time installation, start at Settings > Storage, use Customize when available, and delete an unused game or app if you can download it again. If you want to keep the installation, archive it on USB extended storage, remembering that PS5 games must be copied back before play. If storage pressure is recurring and you want PS5 games to remain launchable from expanded capacity, install an M.2 SSD that meets Sony’s current requirements. Keep saved data and captures on their own backup paths throughout the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much free space should I leave for a large PS5 game?
There is no universal Sony figure that applies to every title. Check the installation prompt and the free-space value under Settings > Storage; the required amount can vary with the game, updates and installed content.
Can I use any USB flash drive as PS5 extended storage?
No. The drive must satisfy the PS5’s extended-storage requirements and be formatted by the console, which erases existing contents. Consult Sony’s current USB extended-storage page before connecting a drive.
Will deleting a game remove my trophies?
Deleting the installed game is separate from deleting saved data. Trophy synchronization and account access are handled separately from the local game files; do not delete saved data unless you intentionally want to remove progress.
Can I move PS5 saved data to the same USB drive that stores games?
Do not assume so. Sony documents PS4 save copying to USB, while PS5 saved data uses a different approach, including cloud storage for PlayStation Plus members. Follow the saved-data instructions for your console and account.
Why did free space change by less than the game’s listed size?
The displayed figure reflects the console’s storage categories and system data, while an installation can have its own temporary and content requirements. Recheck Settings > Storage after the operation and follow the exact message shown by the installer.
