To prepare for several PS5 game launches, connect the console to the internet in Rest Mode, enable automatic downloads, and check storage before adding large games to your plans. Auto-Download and Auto-Install are separate settings: download updates automatically if you want to choose when they install, or enable both if you are comfortable with installation happening while the console is idle.
Set up Rest Mode downloads before launch day
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Rest Mode downloads and updates depend on this setting. PlayStation Support explains the Rest Mode requirements.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Choose Auto-Download to fetch game and app updates while the console is idle. Turn on Auto-Install only if you also want the console to install updates in Rest Mode. PlayStation Support advises: “When you don’t want to close your suspended game, only turn on Auto-Download.” With download-only enabled, you can decide whether to install after resuming the suspended game. Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. PlayStation says games and apps also update to the newest available version when you start them. PlayStation Support: update a game or app.

When one game matters most
The official guidance cited here does not document a universal queue-priority control or promise that every queued title will download simultaneously. If you need one game first, inspect the console’s download queue. If the current interface offers pause or defer controls for other items, use them so the desired title is the immediate task. This is a practical way to manage competing downloads, not a guaranteed priority or speed-boost feature.

Open Settings > Storage to see available space. If you are short on room, delete data you no longer need or move content to a supported storage location. Deleting installed game data frees space but removes that installation; moving content can preserve it elsewhere. The best choice depends on which games and data you want readily available. If you repeatedly run out of room, an M.2 SSD is one PS5 storage option. Check Sony’s current compatibility and installation specifications before buying a drive, since the relevant FAQ is launch-era documentation and should not be treated as a current model recommendation. Use game-specific install choices when available
Some games may let you choose which mode or portion to install first, or remove selected content later. These options depend on the individual game and its developer; they are not a system-wide PS5 feature. Look for install or content-management choices in the game’s own interface. Prepare downloads from the PlayStation App
After pairing the PlayStation App with your PS5, you can start downloads remotely and check or delete games to make room. Remote downloads still require the console’s Rest Mode internet connection. Keep system software updates separate
PS5 system software has its own automatic download and installation controls under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
