The two choices are not identical. Auto-Download fetches the update file but leaves the installation decision to you, which is the safer option when you need to preserve a suspended game. Auto-Install in Rest Mode lets the PS5 install the update while resting. System software updates use a separate menu and separate switches.

The PS5 settings that control automatic updates
PS5 automatic updating is split between two areas. Game and app updates are managed under Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Updates for the PS5 operating system are managed under System Software. Both types of update can use Rest Mode, but the console must be allowed to remain connected to the internet while resting.

Sony documents the game and app controls in its PlayStation Support guide to automatic downloads and updates. The page covers both PS5 and PS4, while the paths in this article are the PS5 paths.

Decide what should happen before changing anything
There are two separate decisions: whether the PS5 may stay online while resting, and whether a downloaded game update may install without you returning to the console. Enabling the internet connection does not by itself select either game-update behavior. You still need to configure the Automatic Updates page.
- Choose Auto-Download if you want the update file ready but want to decide when installation occurs.
- Choose Auto-Install in Rest Mode if finishing the installation while you are away is more important than postponing that change.
- Configure the system software download and installation switches separately; the game/app setting does not control PS5 system software.
This distinction matters most when a game is suspended. Sony specifically recommends Auto-Download when you do not want an update to close a suspended game. You can resume the game first and then decide whether to install the downloaded update.
Enable an internet connection in Rest Mode
This is the prerequisite for Rest Mode downloads. If the PS5 cannot remain connected while resting, the automatic game, app, and system software behaviors described here cannot take place during that rest period.

- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open Power Saving.
- Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
After this switch is enabled, the console is permitted to maintain its internet connection in Rest Mode. The setting is independent of whether game updates will merely download or also install, so continue to the Automatic Updates menu.

Turn on automatic game and app updates
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Open Automatic Updates.
- Enable Auto-Download, Auto-Install in Rest Mode, or the option that matches your preferred behavior.
The relevant controls are on this page rather than in the system-software update page. If you only want update files collected while you are away, use Auto-Download. If you want installation to happen during Rest Mode as well, use Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
Auto-Download versus Auto-Install in Rest Mode
The practical difference is whether installation can occur before you return to the console.

Use Auto-Download when a suspended game matters
A suspended game represents a session you may want to continue exactly where you left it. Sony recommends Auto-Download for this situation: let the PS5 obtain the update, resume the suspended game, and then choose whether to install. This keeps downloading separate from the moment at which the update is applied.

Auto-Install in Rest Mode is the hands-off option. Once enabled, the PS5 is allowed to install the game or app update while resting. Select it when you prefer to return to an already-installed update and do not need to defer that installation decision.

Do not confuse the two switches
Turning on Auto-Download does not mean that every downloaded file will be installed immediately. Conversely, choosing Auto-Install in Rest Mode changes the timing of installation, not the requirement that the PS5 be allowed to stay connected to the internet. Keep both settings in view when diagnosing why a game has a file available but is not yet installed.
Enable automatic PS5 system software updates
System software has its own controls. Configure them separately from game and app updates if you want the PS5 itself to download and install system updates while in Rest Mode.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- Enable Download Update Files Automatically.
- Enable Install Update Files Automatically if you want installation to occur during Rest Mode.
Sony describes these system-software switches as the controls for updating the console while it is in Rest Mode. They do not replace the game/app settings under Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
What happens to a game you have suspended
The installation choice affects the point at which the update can change the game’s installed version. With Auto-Download, the update file may be waiting without being installed, so you can return to the PS5, resume the suspended game, and make the installation decision afterward. This is the option Sony identifies for players who do not want to close a suspended game.

With Auto-Install in Rest Mode, installation is permitted while the console rests. That means the update can be applied before you return, rather than waiting for an explicit decision after you resume the game. Select this only when that earlier installation timing suits the way you use the console.
What happens when you start a game or app
Sony’s support wording is explicit: “When you start a game or app, it automatically updates to the newest version available.” This means launching a title is itself an update point, even if you did not arrange for installation during Rest Mode. If you need to keep a suspended session intact, use the Auto-Download approach and decide about installation after resuming rather than relying on an unattended install.

Return to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and verify that Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled. Without this permission, the PS5 is not configured to stay online while resting.
2. Check the game/app update behavior
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Confirm that the control you intended to use is enabled. Auto-Download prepares the file without committing to installation; Auto-Install in Rest Mode permits installation. A file that has downloaded but has not installed can therefore reflect the selected behavior rather than a failure.
3. Check the separate system-software page if the problem concerns the console
If the item that needs updating is PS5 system software rather than a game or app, inspect Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. The download and installation switches on that page govern system software and are separate from the game/app controls.
4. Allow for updates that require approval
Automatic updating is not an unconditional guarantee. Sony notes that an update may sometimes need user approval. If the settings are correct but an update still does not complete automatically, follow the approval prompt shown by the console.
5. Use Sony’s repair route when the update remains blocked
For problems that persist after checking the appropriate settings, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs through its support guidance. The repair path is the appropriate escalation when the console still cannot complete an update and the on-console controls have been configured correctly.
Choose settings for common situations

How to change the behavior later
You can revisit the same menus whenever your priorities change. For game and app updates, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and change the Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode selection. For system software, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and change the download or installation switches there.
If you want Rest Mode to stop maintaining an internet connection, return to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and disable Stay Connected to the Internet. Doing so changes the prerequisite for Rest Mode downloads; it does not alter the separate update preferences you selected on the other pages.
Limits to expect from automatic updating
- Automatic updating depends on the PS5 being allowed to stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode.
- Game/app updates and system software updates are configured in different settings areas.
- Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode represent different installation timing choices.
- Starting a game or app can trigger an update to the newest available version.
- Sony says some updates may still require approval, so no setting guarantees that every update will finish without interaction.
Final setup checklist
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Choose Auto-Download when you want control over installation, especially with a suspended game.
- Choose Auto-Install in Rest Mode when you want game and app updates installed while the PS5 rests.
- For console updates, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and configure the two system-software switches separately.
- If an update still does not complete, look for a required approval and use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs guidance if the problem persists.
For most players, Auto-Download is the balanced choice: the PS5 can prepare updates in Rest Mode while you retain the decision about installing them. Auto-Install in Rest Mode is appropriate when finishing updates unattended is more important than preserving that decision for later.
