This distinction matters because each setting has a different scope and timing. A permission change is usually prospective, while a dot reset is destructive. A Memory switch affects sharing, not necessarily information already held by the dot. A model-improvement opt-out leaves chats visible in history, and deleting a chat does not substitute for changing the relevant sharing preference.

What each privacy control actually changes
These settings operate at different boundaries. Revoking microphone permission blocks audio access at the operating-system level. Turning off Memory changes future sharing between ChatGPT and the dot, but it is not a deletion command. Resetting the dot removes the dot and the context it retained. Turning off model improvement changes eligible future training use, while chats can remain in history. Voice audio has separate retention and sharing rules.

Labels and availability can differ by platform, plan, region, workspace, and staged rollout. If a label is missing, use the closest current control in the same settings area rather than assuming that another switch has the same effect.

Think of the controls as layers. The device permission is the outer boundary: if it is denied, the app cannot capture microphone input. The Memory setting governs what account-level personalization is shared. The dot’s own context is a separate store with its own reset action. Data Controls govern eligible product-improvement use, and Voice controls address clips created by particular audio modes. Changing one layer does not silently change the others.
Set up or revoke microphone access
For a computer-connected dot
A dot cannot use your computer’s microphone merely because it is paired. You need both an active dot-computer connection and operating-system permission for the ChatGPT app.
- Connect the dot to the computer using the setup flow for your dot.
- When the operating system asks whether ChatGPT may use the microphone, choose Allow if you want voice interaction.
- If you previously denied access, open your computer’s privacy or permissions settings, find the ChatGPT app in the microphone list, and enable access. The exact menu name varies by operating system and version.
- Start a voice interaction and check that the microphone indicator responds. During an active conversation, use the in-conversation microphone control to mute or unmute.
- To block access later, return to the operating system’s microphone permissions and switch ChatGPT off. This is a device-level block and takes precedence over an in-app preference.
Allowing access does not mean the microphone is continuously recording. Capture still depends on starting a supported voice interaction, and the in-conversation mute button provides a quick pause. For a stronger guarantee when you are finished, revoke the operating-system permission or disconnect the dot, rather than relying only on mute.

For ChatGPT Voice on the web
- Open ChatGPT in your browser and start Voice.
- When the browser requests microphone access, select Allow for the site.
- If you blocked it earlier, open the browser’s site-permission controls, locate ChatGPT, change Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.
- Use the Voice microphone button to mute or unmute while speaking.
Browser permission is independent of permission granted to a desktop app. Allowing one does not automatically allow the other. If you use more than one browser, each browser can have a separate site-permission decision.
For the mobile app
- Start Voice in the ChatGPT app.
- Accept the phone’s microphone prompt.
- If the prompt no longer appears, open the phone’s app-permission settings, select ChatGPT, and enable Microphone.
- Use the in-call microphone control whenever you need to pause capture without ending the conversation.

If the microphone still does not work
- Confirm that the dot is connected to the intended computer rather than another nearby device.
- Check that the operating system has not globally disabled microphone access.
- On the web, verify the browser’s site permission, not only the computer’s app permission.
- Close another application that may have exclusive control of the microphone, then restart Voice.
- Check whether the active conversation is muted.
- Verify that the correct input device is selected if your computer has several microphones or a headset connected.
These checks address access. They do not change how audio clips are retained or whether they can be used for improvement; those choices are covered by Voice and Data Controls.

Review ChatGPT Memory shared with the dot
Change the account-level Memory setting
- Open ChatGPT Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Open Memory.
- Review the available Memory controls and turn Memory off if you do not want future sharing between ChatGPT and the dot.
On mobile, the dot profile may expose the path as Customize → Memory. The exact controls can vary with plan, region, platform, workspace, and rollout.
What turning Memory off does—and does not do
Turning Memory off stops future sharing between ChatGPT and the dot. The OpenAI Help Center states: “Turning off Memory in ChatGPT stops that sharing. It does not delete information that your dot has already received.” In practical terms, this is a prospective control. It prevents new Memory sharing but does not purge the dot’s existing context or saved memories.
Memory is also separate from model-improvement settings. You can keep Memory enabled while opting out of eligible model-improvement use, or disable Memory while leaving model-improvement settings unchanged. Choose each setting based on the data flow you want to change.
If several people use the same account or workspace, check which profile the dot is linked to before changing Memory. A setting changed on one account does not necessarily alter another account’s dot, and managed workspaces may limit or rename the available controls.
Remove information the dot has already retained
Why there is no individual-memory editor
Current dot documentation does not provide a screen for viewing, deleting, or directly editing individual dot memories. ChatGPT Memory settings remain the place to manage ChatGPT’s account-level memories, but they do not expose a list of every item held in the dot’s own context.
Reset or delete the dot
- Open the dot’s profile.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose the reset or delete option shown for your dot.
- Read the deletion notice carefully. Confirm only if you accept the broader scope.
Resetting deletes the dot itself, including its conversations, saved memories, and scheduled tasks. It is therefore the appropriate action when the goal is to remove the dot’s own retained context, not merely to stop future Memory sharing. Because reset is broader than a permission change, export or copy anything you need from the dot before confirming.
Data that remains elsewhere
Deleting the dot does not automatically erase files, Codex threads, or ChatGPT conversations created by the dot when those items are stored separately. Other ChatGPT memories also remain manageable through ChatGPT’s Memory settings. Review and delete those records separately if you need account-wide cleanup.

A useful cleanup sequence is to reset the dot first, then inspect ordinary ChatGPT chats, files, Codex threads, and account-level Memory. Deleting only a chat may leave dot-specific context; turning off Memory alone may leave both the dot context and ordinary chat records intact.

- Open ChatGPT Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
For personal plans, this setting controls whether eligible new conversations and dot work may be used to improve models. Turning it off does not hide or delete saved chats; new conversations can still appear in chat history.
Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspace content is not used to train models by default according to OpenAI’s policy, although an organization’s controls and policies determine which settings are available. If you use a managed workspace, follow its administrator’s policy as well as the switches visible in your account.
This control is not a microphone permission and is not ChatGPT Memory. A microphone block prevents capture; a Memory change affects personalization sharing; the model-improvement switch affects eligible use of content for improving models. If your goal is deletion, use the relevant chat, file, Memory, or dot deletion action as well; opting out is not a retroactive eraser.
Understand Voice audio retention and sharing
Live and Advanced Voice
Live and Advanced Voice audio clips are stored with the transcript in chat history and retained for 30 days, according to the 2026 OpenAI Help Center Voice guidance. Deleting the associated chat triggers deletion of its audio and video clips within 30 days. Security, safety, legal, or previously disassociated training-data exceptions can affect that process.

Standard Voice
Standard Voice audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share it for training. This is a different handling rule from Live and Advanced Voice, so identify the Voice mode before drawing conclusions about retention.
Consumer audio-sharing controls
For consumer personal workspaces, audio and video clip sharing is controlled separately through Data Controls. Disabling the relevant sharing toggle stops new sharing. Clips that were previously disassociated may continue to be used, so changing the toggle is not a universal recall of earlier data.

Dictation
Dictation audio has its own FAQ and retention details. Do not assume that the Voice rules above apply identically to a dictation recording. Check the Dictation-specific information in Help Center when dictation, rather than a Voice conversation, is the feature you used.
Deleting a transcript and changing audio-sharing preferences solve different problems. Deletion addresses the chat record and associated clips under the applicable retention process; the sharing toggle governs whether new eligible clips are shared. Check both when you need to limit future use and remove an existing conversation.

Temporary Chat is a conversation-level option for cases where you do not want a chat to become part of your normal history or personalization.
- Temporary chats do not appear in chat history.
- They do not create or update memories.
- They are not used to improve models while they remain temporary.
- They may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
- Before starting, you can choose whether the conversation may use existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins.
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat governed by your account settings. Decide whether the conversation should remain temporary before saving it. Temporary Chat is therefore narrower than resetting a dot: it limits one conversation and does not erase the dot’s previously retained context.
Review the pre-chat choices carefully. A temporary conversation can be configured to use existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins, so “temporary” does not automatically mean that every surrounding personalization feature is unavailable. Select only the inputs you need for that session.
Choose the narrowest control for your goal

Use the least disruptive action that meets your objective. For example, mute for a momentary pause, revoke permission for a device-wide block, disable Memory for future personalization sharing, and reset only when the dot’s existing context must be removed.

A practical privacy checklist
- Before first use, connect the dot to the intended computer and grant microphone access only if voice features are needed.
- After setup, open Personalization → Memory and decide whether the dot should share ChatGPT Memory.
- If you turned Memory off after using the dot, reset the dot if you also need to remove context it already received.
- Review Data controls separately and set Improve the model for everyone according to your preference or workspace policy.
- If you use Voice, identify whether the session was Standard, Live, Advanced, or Dictation before applying a retention assumption.
- Use Temporary Chat for a one-off sensitive discussion, and do not save it unless you want regular-chat handling.
- When deleting the dot, separately review files, Codex threads, ChatGPT conversations, and account-level memories that may be stored outside the dot.
- After changing a permission, test with a short voice interaction and confirm the microphone indicator and mute state behave as expected.
Why a setting may look different
OpenAI can expose different labels or controls by plan, region, platform, workspace, and staged rollout. A personal account may show a switch that a managed workspace hides, and a mobile profile may place a control under Customize rather than the main Settings page. Feature availability can also change over time. Confirm the scope described by the notice beside the control before enabling or disabling it; do not treat a missing switch as proof that the underlying feature is unavailable everywhere.
If a menu path in this guide does not match your screen, update the ChatGPT app or reload the web session, then look for the same category—Personalization for Memory, Data controls for improvement and audio sharing, and the dot profile for reset. Workspace administrators can also impose policies that supersede personal preferences.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off ChatGPT Memory delete what my dot already knows?
No. It stops future Memory sharing, but information the dot has already received remains until you reset or delete the dot. Account-level ChatGPT memories are managed separately in Settings → Personalization → Memory.
Is muting the microphone the same as revoking permission?
No. Mute pauses an active Voice conversation. Revoking the operating-system, browser, or mobile-app permission blocks future microphone access at the device boundary.
