To change an app’s access to your media, open Settings > Apps > [app name] > Permissions > Photos and videos, then select the option your phone offers. To audit every app by permission type, use Settings > Security & Privacy (or Privacy) > Permission manager > Photos and videos. Android versions and manufacturers use different labels, and some apps support more limited access than others.

Change photo and video access for one app

This is the fastest route when a particular app cannot upload media, has more access than you want, or needs its permission reset.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open the phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select the app you want to inspect. If it is not in the first list, tap See all apps and find it there.
  4. Tap Permissions.
  5. Tap Photos and videos.
  6. Choose one of the access settings shown on your device, then return to the app and try the media task again.

The permission page is app-specific. A phone may show choices such as allowing access, allowing selected items, or denying access, but the exact choices depend on the Android release, the manufacturer’s software, and how that app requests media. If an option described in an online guide is absent, that does not necessarily indicate a fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You do not need a separate privacy utility or a paid service to make this change. Android’s Settings app provides the control. If your manufacturer uses a different heading, use the Settings search field for Permissions, Photos and videos, or the app’s name.

Review every app that can access photos and videos

Permission manager is better than opening apps one at a time when you want an audit of your phone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Security & Privacy or Privacy; the heading varies by device.
  3. Tap Permission manager.
  4. Select Photos and videos. Android’s permission list describes this type as “Access photos and videos on your device.”
  5. Review the apps listed under the available access categories.
  6. Tap an app to change its setting, then repeat for any other app that should have a different level of access.

This view answers two different questions: which apps have requested the permission and what access each one currently has. An app that does not appear may not have requested the permission, may use the system Photo Picker instead, or may use a different capability altogether.

Permission manager is also useful after installing or updating an app. A newly updated app can request media access when you first use a gallery-related feature, so checking the list after that interaction gives you a more accurate picture than checking only immediately after installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See which permissions were used recently

Permission settings tell you what an app is allowed to do. The Privacy dashboard helps you see recent permission activity.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security & Privacy or Privacy.
  3. Tap Privacy dashboard.
  4. Choose the permission category you want to inspect and open an activity entry for more detail.

Google’s Android help documentation describes a history window of the last seven days on Android 13 and the last 24 hours on Android 12. Those figures describe the dashboard’s activity history, not how long a permission remains granted. Your phone may present a different layout or history range on another Android version.

A dashboard entry is a useful prompt to investigate, not proof that an app saved or transmitted a file. To determine what the app retained, check its own imports, drafts, account, or cloud-storage controls. Permission history and the app’s data records answer different questions.

Understand the access choices Android may show

There is no single list of choices that appears on every phone. Android presents the controls supported by the operating-system version and by the app’s implementation.

Broad access

A broad Photos and videos setting lets the app read the media covered by that permission. This is useful for apps designed to browse, organize, back up, or edit a library, but it gives the app more visibility than a one-time upload requires.

Before choosing broad access, match the setting to the app’s job. A photo organizer or backup tool may need to scan many items, while a messaging app used to send one picture may only need a single selection. Granting the broad setting can make a feature work immediately, but it is not required for every media task.

Selected media

On compatible Android 14 devices, an app can let you grant access only to particular photos and videos instead of all media of the requested type. This is called Selected Photos Access. The app must support the relevant Android behavior, so not every app will display it. The wording, picker screen, and way you change the selection can differ between apps.

No access

Denying Photos and videos blocks the app from using that permission. The app may stop showing a gallery, fail when attaching a file, or offer another way to choose a file. You can return to its Permissions page and change the setting later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How Selected Photos Access works on Android 14

Android 14 introduced Selected Photos Access for qualifying apps that target Android 14, also known as API level 34, or a higher target level. Instead of approving the entire media collection, you can approve specific items. This limits what the app can read while preserving the workflow the app needs.

Eligibility is not enough by itself. The app must implement the feature, and the choices shown during the request depend on that implementation. One app may offer a button to add or replace selected items; another may ask you to make a new selection when it needs more media. Android’s system and the app together determine the exact reselection experience.

If you need to change the items later, look for the app’s Photos and videos permission in Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions. If the app provides its own media-access control, use that as well. A selected-media grant is not the same as a permanent copy: it controls what the app can read through the permission, while files the app has already imported, edited, or uploaded are separate data.

Selected access is therefore a scope choice, not a deletion tool. Removing an item from the selection can prevent future reads through that grant, but it does not undo an edit, remove an attachment from a conversation, or retract a file that has already reached a cloud account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Photo Picker when you only need to share a few items

When an app offers the Android Photo Picker, it is usually the narrowest way to choose particular photos or videos. You select the items in the system picker, and Android grants the app temporary read access to the selected media URI. The app does not need broad runtime storage permission for that selection.

Typical Photo Picker flow

  1. In the app, start the action that needs media, such as attaching a picture or choosing a video.
  2. When the system Photo Picker opens, browse the available albums or media categories.
  3. Tap the specific photos or videos to share.
  4. Confirm the selection. Android returns the selected items to the app with temporary read access.

Photo Picker is intended for one-time or infrequent media access. It is different from granting an app ongoing library access in Settings: the app receives the items you selected for that operation rather than a general invitation to read your collection.

If an app opens its own gallery and asks for Photos and videos permission instead, it may not support Photo Picker. You cannot force every app to offer the system picker; the app’s design determines which route is available.

Do not confuse Photos and videos with Camera permission

Camera permission controls whether an app can use the camera to capture new images or video. Photos and videos controls access to media already stored on the device. An app can have one permission without the other.

  • An app that needs to take a new picture may request Camera.
  • An app that needs to attach an existing picture may request Photos and videos or invoke Photo Picker.
  • A scanning or messaging app may need both capabilities for different features.

Changing Camera permission will not, by itself, change the app’s access to your existing gallery. Check each permission separately on the app’s Permissions page. If a scan works but choosing an old image fails, inspect Photos and videos; if the gallery works but the in-app camera does not, inspect Camera.

Choose the right route for your goal

What you want to do Best route What access it provides
Change one app’s existing permission Settings > Apps > app > Permissions > Photos and videos The access settings supported by that app and phone
Audit or change several apps Settings > Security & Privacy (or Privacy) > Permission manager > Photos and videos A permission-type list of apps and their current settings
Share a few photos or videos once Use the app’s Android Photo Picker Temporary read access to the media you select
Inspect recent permission activity Settings > Security & Privacy (or Privacy) > Privacy dashboard Recent activity history; Android 13 documents seven days, Android 12 documents 24 hours

The practical trade-off is convenience versus scope. Broad access can reduce repeated prompts for library-oriented work. Selected access narrows the readable set. Photo Picker is most limited for an occasional upload because it supplies only the items chosen for that operation.

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective controls

The app is not listed under Apps

Open Settings > Apps > See all apps and search or scroll to the app. Some Settings screens initially show only recently used or recommended apps.

There is no Photos and videos entry

The app may not have requested that permission. It may use Photo Picker, a document picker, or another system-mediated route instead. Check the action inside the app that needs media and watch for the permission request when you perform it.

The available choices do not match a guide

Menu labels and permission choices vary by Android version and manufacturer. An Android 14 phone with a compatible app may show selected-media access, while an older phone or an app that has not implemented the feature may show fewer choices.

The app still cannot attach a file after permission is granted

  • Reopen the app after changing the permission.
  • Confirm that you changed Photos and videos, not only Camera.
  • If you granted selected access, make sure the exact item the app needs is included.
  • Try the app’s picker again; some apps request permission only when the feature is used.

The app can no longer see media after access was reduced

That behavior is expected when the app previously relied on broad access and now has selected or denied access. Add the needed items through the app’s reselection flow, or return to its Permissions page and choose the broader setting if the app genuinely requires library-wide access.

The permission appears correct, but the app shows an empty gallery

First test the same action with a newly selected item. If selected access is enabled, the app may only see the items in that selection. If the app uses Photo Picker, start the attach or import action again rather than looking for a permanent in-app gallery. Also verify that you changed the permission for the correct app; similarly named companion apps can have separate settings.

I cannot find Permission manager

Use the Settings search box for Permission manager or Privacy. On some phones, privacy controls are grouped under Security & Privacy; on others they appear under a shorter Privacy heading. The exact path can differ without changing the underlying permission controls.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What changing a permission does—and does not do

Changing Photos and videos permission changes what the app is allowed to read from the device going forward. It does not automatically erase media the app previously copied into its own storage, exported elsewhere, edited into a new file, or uploaded to a service. Those copies must be handled through the app’s own deletion, account, or cloud-storage controls.

Similarly, allowing selected media does not make every other image invisible to you in the phone’s gallery. It limits the app’s permission scope; your gallery and other apps retain their own access settings.

Revoking access also does not guarantee that an app will continue to offer every feature. A backup or editing app may depend on broad library visibility, while a messaging app may continue to work through Photo Picker. Decide whether the app’s function justifies the access it requests, then test the specific workflow you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical permission audit

Use this checklist when you want to reduce unnecessary media access without breaking everyday workflows:

  • Open Permission manager and review the apps listed for Photos and videos.
  • Keep broad access only for apps whose main function requires browsing or managing a library.
  • Use selected access when an app supports it and needs only a defined group of items.
  • Use Photo Picker for one-off uploads or attachments whenever the app offers it.
  • Open Privacy dashboard to investigate unexpected recent activity.
  • Review Camera separately because it governs capture, not existing media.
  • After revoking access, check whether the app retained copies or uploads and remove those through the app’s own controls if necessary.

After making changes, perform one representative task: attach a picture, import a video, browse a library, or take a new photo. This confirms whether the narrower setting fits your actual use instead of relying only on the label shown in Settings.

Frequently asked questions

Will Android show the same Photos and videos options on every phone?

No. Google’s general instructions note that Settings paths can vary by device. Android version, manufacturer software, and the app’s implementation all affect the labels and choices shown.

Can I grant access to only one album?

The documented Android control is based on selected photos and videos, not a universal album-level rule. Whether an app offers album selection depends on its implementation and the picker it uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Photo Picker give an app permanent access?

The system Photo Picker grants temporary read access to the selected media URI for that operation. It is designed to avoid broad storage permission for one-time or infrequent sharing.

How far back can Privacy dashboard activity go?

Google documents seven days of activity on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. These are dashboard history windows, not permission-expiration timers.

What should I do if an app asks for full access when I only want to send one image?

Look for a system Photo Picker or another “choose photos” action inside the app. If it does not provide one, you can deny or limit Photos and videos in Settings, but the app may be unable to complete that feature without broader access.

Can I switch from selected access back to full access?

If your phone and app expose both settings, return to Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions > Photos and videos and choose the broader option. The available controls depend on Android version, manufacturer software, and app support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does denying Photos and videos delete the app’s old copies?

No. Permission changes govern access to media on the device. Copies already stored by the app or uploaded to a service require deletion through that app or service.

Why can an app take a picture but not choose one from my gallery?

Camera and Photos and videos are separate capabilities. Check the Photos and videos permission or use Photo Picker for an existing image; Camera permission alone does not grant gallery access.

Do I need to pay for an app to manage these permissions?

No. The Android Settings app, Permission manager, Privacy dashboard, Selected Photos Access, and Photo Picker are system features when supported by your device and the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can changing Photos and videos permission remove files an app already uploaded?

No. Permission changes control future access; remove previously copied or uploaded files through the app or service that holds them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Selected Photos Access available to every Android 14 app?

No. Android 14 supports the capability for qualifying apps targeting API level 34 or higher, but the app must implement it.

Can I use Photo Picker without granting broad media permission?

Yes. Photo Picker is designed to let you select particular photos or videos while Android grants temporary read access to those selected media URIs.

Why are my Settings labels different from the instructions?

Google’s routes are general. Android version, manufacturer software, and app implementation can change the headings and available choices.

Does Camera permission control access to existing photos?

No. Camera controls capturing new images or video. Existing gallery access is handled by Photos and videos or by a system picker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use the app’s Photos and videos permission page for a direct change, Permission manager for a phone-wide audit, Privacy dashboard for recent activity, and Photo Picker or Selected Photos Access when you want to share less than your entire library.
