How to Manage Personalized Ads and Privacy Settings on Xbox

To manage advertising and privacy on Xbox, change the setting that matches the data you want to control. Microsoft account personalized-ad settings govern how account-associated activity is used for personalized advertising, including on third-party sites. Xbox console settings govern online safety, privacy, and app permissions. Windows Advertising ID is a separate Windows control, and turning it off does not reduce the number of ads shown. Xbox also treats personalized recommendations as a separate feature.

Xbox privacy is divided across separate controls

There is no single switch that covers every Microsoft, Xbox, and Windows privacy behavior. Use the scope that matches your goal before changing anything.

Turn off personalized advertising for your Microsoft account

The account-level setting is the relevant control when you want Microsoft to stop using account-associated activity for personalized advertising. It is separate from the privacy menus on an Xbox console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Microsoft’s personalized ad settings page in a browser.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account used with Xbox. Check the account identity carefully if you use more than one Microsoft account.
  3. Review the personalized advertising control and switch it off. Follow the page’s current confirmation or save prompt.
  4. Return to the page later if you need to verify the choice. Microsoft says a signed-in user’s choice is stored in the account settings until the user changes it or deletes the account.

This setting concerns personalization, not the existence of advertising. You may continue to see ads after opting out, but Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes those ads from ads selected using the account’s activity for personalization. The account privacy page also describes use of account-associated activity for ads on third-party sites, so this is broader than a console-only switch.

What the account setting does not cover

  • It does not replace Xbox online-safety, privacy, or app-permission controls.
  • It does not change Windows Advertising ID.
  • It does not disable personalized recommendations on Xbox.
  • It does not establish that all Microsoft services, websites, or third-party advertising systems will stop collecting or using data.

Manage privacy and online-safety settings on the Xbox console

Xbox Support maintains separate guidance for managing online-safety and privacy settings. The exact menu labels can vary by console software, model, account configuration, and region, and the support pages are the safest source for the labels currently displayed on your device.

  1. On the Xbox, open the system settings area and look for the section covering account privacy, online safety, or family and communication permissions. Do not rely on an old screenshot if the wording on your console differs.
  2. Use the Xbox Support page for managing online-safety and privacy settings to match each option with its current description.
  3. Review the permissions that matter to you, such as who can interact with the account and what information or activity can be visible. Change only the options you intend to change.
  4. Confirm or save the changes using the prompt shown on your console.
  5. Test the result with the activity or interaction you were trying to restrict. If a label or category is missing, use the current Xbox Support instructions rather than guessing at an equivalent setting.

Microsoft’s Privacy Statement says Xbox users can view or edit personal data, privacy settings, online-safety preferences, and data-sharing preferences through My Xbox on the console or through Xbox.com. Those areas are useful when you want to inspect the broader account and console privacy picture, not only advertising.

Review app privacy permissions separately

App permissions are a distinct Xbox Support topic. An app may have its own access requirements, and changing a console privacy setting is not a substitute for reviewing those permissions.

  1. Open the Xbox app-privacy settings area on the console.
  2. Read the permission description for each app or category before changing it.
  3. Disable access that the app does not need for your intended use, then confirm the change.
  4. Reopen the app and check whether a feature you rely on requires that permission. If it does, decide whether the feature is worth the access.

These controls are about app access and privacy behavior. They should not be presented as a way to turn off personalized advertising on the Microsoft account, and they do not control Windows Advertising ID.

Do not confuse recommendations with advertising

Xbox Support publishes separate guidance for personalized recommendations. Recommendations can include suggested games, content, or other offers selected for your account. Advertising personalization is a different setting managed through Microsoft’s account controls.

If your objective is to stop recommendations from being tailored to your activity, follow the personalized-recommendations guidance. If your objective is to stop account-associated activity being used for personalized ads, use the Microsoft account personalized-ad setting. Changing one should not be described as changing the other.

Windows Advertising ID is a separate decision

Windows has its own Advertising ID control. Microsoft’s Windows guidance explicitly says that turning off Advertising ID does not reduce the number of ads shown. It can make ads less relevant, but it is not a complete Xbox advertising solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change Windows Advertising ID only when your goal is to control that Windows-specific identifier. Do not use its status as proof that the Xbox account’s personalized-ad setting has changed, and do not expect a Windows change to alter Xbox console privacy or app permissions.

How the settings relate in common situations

Your goal Use this control first Expected result
Stop account activity being used for personalized ads Microsoft account personalized ad settings The signed-in account stores your choice until you change it or delete the account.
Limit who can interact with the Xbox account Xbox online-safety and privacy settings Console privacy and safety permissions change according to the options you select.
Restrict what an Xbox app can access Xbox app-privacy settings The selected app permission changes; advertising controls remain separate.
Change tailored game or content suggestions Xbox personalized-recommendations guidance Recommendation personalization is addressed without assuming an advertising opt-out.
Control a Windows advertising identifier Windows Advertising ID setting The identifier setting changes, but the number of ads shown is not reduced.

What to check when the change appears not to work

You still see ads

Seeing an ad after turning off personalized advertising is not, by itself, evidence that the setting failed. The Microsoft account control concerns personalization; it does not promise an ad-free Xbox, website, or Microsoft service. Check that you changed the setting while signed in to the Microsoft account used for the activity you are reviewing.

Recommendations are still tailored

Recommendations have their own Xbox Support guidance. Review that setting separately instead of changing the advertising control repeatedly.

The console menu does not match an online guide

Xbox Support’s current pages should take precedence over screenshots or instructions written for another console software version, model, or region. Use the labels displayed on your console and confirm the meaning of each option before saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You changed Windows Advertising ID and expected fewer ads

That outcome is not what Microsoft’s Windows guidance promises. The control can affect relevance, not the number of ads. Use the Microsoft account personalized-ad setting for account-level advertising personalization and the Xbox privacy settings for console privacy.

You cannot tell which account was changed

Sign out and identify the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox profile before revisiting the account-level ad page. A choice is stored with the signed-in account, so changing a different account will not alter the first account’s setting.

A privacy review checklist

  • Decide whether your goal concerns ads, recommendations, console privacy, app access, or Windows advertising identity.
  • Use the Microsoft account personalized ad settings page for account-level ad personalization.
  • Use Xbox online-safety and privacy settings for console permissions and safety choices.
  • Review Xbox app-privacy settings independently for app access.
  • Use the separate Xbox personalized-recommendations guidance for tailored suggestions.
  • Treat Windows Advertising ID as a Windows-only control; disabling it does not reduce ad volume.
  • After changing a setting, verify the signed-in account and the scope of the control before judging the result.

Why scope matters

The most common mistake is treating “privacy on Xbox” as one setting. Microsoft’s account controls, Xbox console controls, app permissions, recommendation preferences, and Windows identifiers operate at different scopes. A precise change is more reliable than switching unrelated options: account settings address account-level ad personalization, console settings address Xbox privacy and safety, app settings address app access, recommendation settings address suggested content, and Windows Advertising ID addresses a Windows identifier.
