How to Manage Personal Dictionary and Text Replacement Settings on Android

Android does not have one universal personal-dictionary or text-replacement menu. The correct steps depend on the keyboard that is active in the text field. Samsung Keyboard has a dedicated Text shortcuts list for turning a short trigger into a longer phrase. Gboard documents adding individual words from a correction prompt, removing unwanted suggestions, and changing text-correction options, but its current help page does not document a complete route for browsing personal-dictionary entries or creating phrase shortcuts.

Identify the keyboard first, then use the matching instructions below. Menu names can differ by phone model, Android release, keyboard version, language, and region.

What the two settings actually do

Personal dictionary words

A personal-dictionary entry is a spelling that the keyboard should recognize or suggest even when it is not in the standard language dictionary. It is useful for names, technical terms, local expressions, unusual spellings, and abbreviations that you use repeatedly. Adding a word does not automatically make it expand into a sentence; it only teaches the keyboard that the spelling is intentional.

Text replacement or text shortcuts

A text shortcut maps a short trigger to a longer phrase. For example, a trigger such as addr1 could offer a saved postal address, while tyvm could offer a longer thank-you message. Samsung describes this as a shortcut phrase paired with an expanded phrase. The expansion is a separate control from a dictionary word.

Learned predictions

Keyboards can also learn from what you type. A learned word may appear in the prediction bar after you finish entering it and press the spacebar. Learned suggestions are not the same as manually created shortcuts, and clearing learned prediction data is broader than deleting one shortcut.

Identify the keyboard before changing anything

Settings belong to the keyboard app, not to Android’s text fields in general. Open any app with a text field and look at the keyboard branding or layout. You can also open your phone’s keyboard settings and check which on-screen keyboard is enabled and selected as the default. The instructions in Samsung’s support documentation apply to Samsung Keyboard; they do not automatically apply to third-party keyboards. Gboard has its own menus and behavior.

  1. Tap a text field, such as a message, note, or browser search box.
  2. Inspect the keyboard that appears and note whether it is Samsung Keyboard, Gboard, or another keyboard.
  3. If the wrong keyboard appears, use the keyboard-switcher button on the keyboard or change the default under your phone’s on-screen-keyboard settings, then return to the text field.

If more than one keyboard is installed, changing settings for an inactive keyboard will not change the suggestions or shortcuts you currently see.

Samsung Keyboard: create and use text shortcuts

Add a shortcut and expanded phrase

On current Samsung Galaxy software, the documented route is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose General management.
  3. Tap Samsung Keyboard settings.
  4. Open Text shortcuts.
  5. Tap the + icon.
  6. Enter the short trigger in Shortcut phrase.
  7. Enter the complete wording in Expanded phrase.
  8. Tap Add.

The new shortcut should appear in the Text shortcuts list. When you type the trigger in a text field, Samsung says the expanded phrase appears in the predictive-text bar. Tap that suggestion to insert the longer phrase; typing the trigger alone does not necessarily replace it automatically.

Choose reliable triggers

Use a sequence you are unlikely to type as ordinary prose. A short, distinctive trigger reduces accidental expansions. Avoid a common word as the trigger, because it may appear in the prediction bar whenever you type that word. Keep punctuation and capitalization consistent with the phrase you want inserted, and test the shortcut in a note before relying on it in a form or message.

Edit or delete a Samsung shortcut

Return to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts to review saved entries. Use the controls on that list to change an entry when your trigger or expanded wording changes. To remove one, use the bin icon on the Text shortcuts screen. Deleting a shortcut removes the expansion rule; it does not erase all learned prediction data.

Older or alternate Samsung menu labels

Samsung documents older menu paths that may appear on earlier devices or software builds, including Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Smart typing. If you do not see General management or Text shortcuts, open Settings search and search for Text shortcuts, Samsung Keyboard, or Smart typing. Samsung notes that some options are unavailable on older devices or operating-system versions, and labels can vary by model.

Samsung Keyboard: manage learned words and corrections

Save a word through normal typing

Samsung says a word can be learned when you finish typing it for the first time and tap the spacebar. The keyboard may then offer that word in its predictive toolbar later. This learning behavior is different from creating a Text shortcut: no trigger-and-expansion pair is created.

Remove one learned suggestion

  1. Type until the unwanted word appears in Samsung Keyboard’s prediction bar.
  2. Touch and hold that suggestion.
  3. Select Remove.

This removes the selected learned suggestion from the toolbar. It is a targeted action and does not clear every personalized prediction.

Erase all personalized predictions

For a broad reset, open Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions, then tap Erase. This clears the keyboard’s personalized prediction data rather than only one word. Use it when the prediction history is broadly unhelpful or when you want to remove the learned vocabulary in one operation. A broad erase is not a substitute for deleting a single Text shortcut from the shortcut list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate prediction, replacement, and spell-check controls

Samsung exposes several independent switches under its keyboard settings:

  • Predictive text controls whether the keyboard offers word predictions while you type.
  • Auto replace can complete or replace the word being typed with the word Samsung considers most likely for the sentence.
  • Auto spell check underlines likely misspellings and offers corrections.

Turning off predictive text changes the suggestion bar but does not delete saved shortcuts. Turning off Auto replace changes automatic completion behavior, while Auto spell check controls underlining and correction prompts.

Gboard: add a word and manage suggestions

Add a word to Gboard’s dictionary

Google’s current Gboard Help instructions use a contextual method rather than a universal dictionary-list route:

  1. Type the desired word in any text field.
  2. When Gboard marks it with a red underline, tap the underlined word.
  3. Choose Add to dictionary.

The word is then treated as an accepted spelling by Gboard. The cited Gboard help page does not provide a complete procedure for opening a browsable list of personal-dictionary entries, editing an existing entry, or creating a phrase-expansion shortcut. Do not assume that a menu path found for Samsung Keyboard applies to Gboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove an unwanted Gboard suggestion

  1. Wait for the unwanted word to appear in the suggestion strip.
  2. Touch and hold the suggestion.
  3. Drag it to the bin that appears.

This is Gboard’s documented way to dismiss an unwanted suggestion. It is distinct from adding a word through Add to dictionary and does not establish a universal Android procedure for editing every personal-dictionary entry.

Change Gboard text-correction options

  1. Open the keyboard features menu.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open Text correction.
  5. Adjust the options available on your device and for your language.

The exact switches shown can vary. Google’s help page states that some instructions require Android 7.0 or later and that certain suggestion features depend on supported devices and languages. If an option is missing, check the phone’s Android version, the active language, and whether another keyboard is actually being used.

Gboard and Samsung Keyboard compared

Task Gboard Samsung Keyboard
Add a word Type the word, tap its red underline, then choose Add to dictionary. Samsung documents learning a word by typing it and tapping the spacebar; the word may later appear in predictions.
Create a phrase shortcut The cited Gboard Help page does not document a complete shortcut-entry workflow. Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts, tap +, enter a shortcut and expanded phrase, then tap Add.
Remove one unwanted suggestion Touch and hold the suggestion and drag it to the bin. Touch and hold the learned suggestion in the toolbar and choose Remove.
Clear learned data broadly Not covered by the cited Gboard Help page. Use Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions > Erase.
Version and availability limits Some steps require Android 7.0 or later; suggestion availability can depend on device and language. Older devices or operating-system versions may lack options, and menu labels can differ.

Decide which control you need

Start with the result you want, not with a menu name. If the keyboard flags one spelling as wrong, add that spelling to the dictionary. If you want a short code to produce a sentence, address, or sign-off, use a text shortcut where your keyboard documents one. If an old word keeps appearing in suggestions, remove the individual learned suggestion. If many predictions are irrelevant, consider the broader Samsung personalized-predictions erase command. These actions have different effects, so choosing the narrowest one avoids unnecessary cleanup.

  • One accepted spelling: use Samsung’s learning behavior or Gboard’s Add to dictionary prompt.
  • A reusable multiword phrase: use Samsung’s Text shortcuts list and its separate shortcut and expanded-phrase fields.
  • One bad prediction: remove that item from the suggestion strip.
  • A generally unhelpful Samsung prediction history: erase personalized predictions, knowing that this is a broad reset.
  • Unexpected automatic changes: review Samsung’s Auto replace, Predictive text, and Auto spell check switches separately.

Plan and test shortcuts safely

Before adding several entries, make a small list of the phrases you actually repeat. Record each trigger and its expanded phrase in a note while you set them up. Distinctive triggers are easier to remember and less likely to collide with normal words. A trigger that contains an unusual letter sequence can be easier to spot in the prediction bar than a common abbreviation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test one new entry in a note, message draft, or browser search field. On Samsung, type the trigger and watch for the expanded phrase in the predictive-text bar; tap it to insert the phrase. Confirm that spacing, punctuation, capitalization, and line content are acceptable before using it in a form. If the phrase does not appear, check that the same keyboard is active and that the exact trigger was entered. Testing also reveals whether a trigger is too common and appears when you do not intend to use it.

Review the list occasionally. Delete obsolete Samsung shortcuts with the bin control, especially when an address, job title, or support response changes. Removing an obsolete shortcut does not automatically remove a similarly learned prediction, so clean those separately if they continue to appear.

Requirements, limits, and cost

This is a software-settings task. The documented workflows require no phone accessory, keyboard hardware, repair tool, subscription, or other purchase. You need access to the phone’s Settings app and the keyboard you intend to configure. The exact labels depend on the device, Android release, keyboard version, active language, and region.

Google notes that some Gboard instructions require Android 7.0 or later and that certain suggestion features are limited by supported devices and languages. Samsung likewise notes that older devices or operating-system versions may not expose every option. If a control is absent, do not substitute a different keyboard’s menu path: verify the active keyboard, check the software and language conditions, and search Settings for the literal feature name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot when a word or shortcut does not behave as expected

The shortcut never appears

  • Confirm that Samsung Keyboard is the active keyboard. A shortcut saved in Samsung Keyboard will not run while Gboard or another keyboard is active.
  • Check the exact trigger spelling, including spaces, punctuation, and capitalization.
  • Type the trigger in a normal text field and look in the prediction bar; Samsung presents the expanded phrase there for you to tap.
  • Open the Text shortcuts list and verify that the entry was saved. If it is missing, create it again and tap Add.
  • Check whether a keyboard update or device software change altered the menu or reset keyboard data.

A word keeps appearing after you removed it

A shortcut and a learned prediction are separate. Removing a Text shortcut does not necessarily remove a similarly learned word, and removing one learned suggestion does not delete every related shortcut. On Samsung, use the targeted Remove action for one prediction or the personalized-predictions erase option for a broad cleanup. On Gboard, use the documented touch-and-hold drag-to-bin action for the unwanted suggestion.

The settings path is different

Manufacturers rearrange settings between Android releases. Search Settings for the literal terms Text shortcuts, Samsung Keyboard, Smart typing, or Text correction. Samsung’s older documented path through Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Smart typing may be visible instead of the newer General management path.

The keyboard replaces words you did not choose

On Samsung, review Predictive text and Auto replace separately. Disabling Auto replace stops automatic completion or replacement while leaving the keyboard’s other correction features available. Disabling Predictive text removes the prediction bar. Auto spell check controls underlines and correction suggestions, not saved Text shortcuts.

Gboard lacks an expected feature

First verify that Gboard is active and that the phone meets the Android and language requirements shown in Google’s help. The current cited page documents contextual word addition, suggestion removal, and Text correction settings, but not a complete personal-dictionary editor or phrase-shortcut workflow. If you need a precise shortcut-entry procedure, consult documentation for the exact Gboard and handset version rather than applying Samsung’s menus.

A practical way to organize custom entries

Use dictionary entries for spelling

Add a personal-dictionary word when the desired output is one spelling, such as a surname, product code, specialist term, or regional word. This keeps correction and suggestion behavior from treating the spelling as an error.

Use shortcuts for reusable text

Create a Samsung Text shortcut when the desired output is a phrase, address, sign-off, support response, or other multiword block. Give each trigger a distinctive form, test it in a note, and remove obsolete entries from the Text shortcuts list so the prediction bar remains manageable.

Use resets sparingly

Remove one suggestion when only one item is wrong. Use Samsung’s personalized-predictions erase command only when you intend to clear the broader learned history. A reset is a data-cleanup action, not a way to edit one phrase shortcut.

What to expect after changing settings

Keyboard changes generally affect future typing and suggestions in the keyboard that owns the setting. They do not rewrite text already sent or saved in other apps. A Samsung shortcut may be offered in the prediction bar rather than inserted silently, so selecting the suggestion is part of the workflow. Gboard’s documented word-addition process begins from a red-underlined word, while its suggestion-removal process begins from the suggestion strip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because Android manufacturers, keyboard versions, and language packs change their menus, treat the keyboard name and the visible labels on your device as the deciding factors. The most dependable sequence is to identify the active keyboard, use that keyboard’s own settings, and distinguish a dictionary word, a learned prediction, and a text-expansion shortcut before deleting or resetting anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a personal-dictionary word the same as a text shortcut?

No. A dictionary word tells the keyboard that a spelling is acceptable or worth suggesting. A text shortcut maps a short trigger to a longer expanded phrase. Samsung lists these as separate controls.

How do I create a text replacement on a Samsung phone?

Go to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts, tap +, enter the Shortcut phrase and Expanded phrase, then tap Add. Type the trigger and tap the expanded phrase when it appears in the predictive-text bar.

How do I add one unusual word in Gboard?

Type the word in a text field, tap the red-underlined word, and choose Add to dictionary.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I remove one unwanted suggestion?

In Gboard, touch and hold the suggestion and drag it to the bin. In Samsung Keyboard, touch and hold the learned suggestion in the prediction bar and choose Remove.

How do I clear all learned Samsung predictions?

Open Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions, then tap Erase. This is broader than deleting one suggestion or shortcut.

Why can’t I find the Samsung Text shortcuts menu?

Menu names vary by device and software. Search Settings for Text shortcuts, Samsung Keyboard, or Smart typing. Older software may use Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Smart typing.

Why does my shortcut not work?

Check that Samsung Keyboard is active, confirm the trigger’s exact spelling and capitalization, verify that the entry appears in Text shortcuts, and look for the expanded phrase in the prediction bar rather than expecting silent replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do these settings require an accessory or paid app?

No. The documented workflows are built-in keyboard settings and require no physical purchase. Availability can still depend on Android version, keyboard version, device, and language.

The Bottom Line

Identify the active keyboard first. Use a dictionary entry for an accepted spelling, a text shortcut for reusable phrases, and learned-prediction controls for unwanted suggestions. Samsung provides the clearest documented phrase-shortcut list; Gboard’s documented workflows cover contextual word addition, suggestion removal, and Text correction settings.
