How to Manage Parental Controls and Spending in Fortnite

The reliable way to limit a child’s Fortnite spending or playtime is to use more than one control. Epic’s parental settings protect purchases processed through Epic, while PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, mobile stores and other platforms control transactions billed by those platforms. V-Bucks and paid random items require their own checks, and Fortnite’s account-level time settings do not replace limits on the console or device.

Start by identifying the child’s Epic account and the service that will process a purchase. Then set an Epic parental-controls PIN, configure the platform’s family and payment restrictions, review V-Bucks permissions, check whether the account is Cabined, and set both account-level and device-level time limits.

What each Fortnite control actually covers

Fortnite can be signed in on several devices, but the payment route determines which safeguard applies. An Epic PIN is not a universal lock for every purchase made while Fortnite is installed.

Control Covers Does not cover
Epic “Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments” Real-money purchases processed through Epic payment Purchases billed by PlayStation, Steam, Xbox or Nintendo Switch; purchases made with V-Bucks
Epic under-13 daily limit Up to $100 per day in purchases through Epic payment when the player indicates they are under 13; a parent or guardian PIN is needed to override a purchase above the limit Platform-billed purchases and anything bought with V-Bucks
Platform or device parental controls Purchases and playtime governed by the console, computer or mobile platform They do not automatically configure the child’s Epic account on other devices
V-Bucks random-item setting Whether V-Bucks, or content bought with V-Bucks, may be used on paid random items where the feature is offered It does not stop ordinary Epic-payment purchases or platform billing
Fortnite and UEFN time controls Daily amounts and time windows for the same Epic account across devices; play and create time can be separated They do not remove independent console or device limits

The $100 figure is an Epic policy limit for the stated under-13 condition, not a universal Fortnite spending cap. A child can still encounter a different result if the transaction is routed through a platform or uses V-Bucks.

First identify the account and payment route

Before changing settings, establish which Epic account the child uses and where the account is signed in. A family can otherwise secure one account while the child plays another.

  1. Confirm the Epic account. Check the account used for Fortnite and, if applicable, Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Record the sign-in email or other recovery details and make sure the child does not have a second account.
  2. List every device. Include computers, consoles, phones and tablets. Fortnite time settings follow the Epic account, but each device can impose a separate limit.
  3. Trace the billing route. An Epic checkout uses Epic payment. A purchase made through a console or another platform’s checkout is governed by that platform. V-Bucks are an in-game currency and are excluded from Epic’s payment PIN and under-13 daily limit.
  4. Check saved payment methods. On a PC where Epic processes purchases, Epic suggests removing stored purchasing methods as an additional way to prevent an unsupervised checkout.

Do this inventory before setting a PIN so you know which controls must be repeated elsewhere.

Set the Epic parental-controls PIN for Epic-processed payments

Use the child’s Epic account and open its Parental Controls area. Create a PIN that the child cannot guess and do not reuse the device unlock code. Enable the setting named Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the child’s Epic account using an adult-controlled session.
  2. Open the account’s Parental Controls page.
  3. Choose the option to require a PIN for Epic Games Payments.
  4. Create and confirm the parental-controls PIN.
  5. Sign out of the adult session and verify that an Epic-processed real-money purchase requests the PIN before completion.

This PIN applies only when Epic is the payment processor. It does not protect a purchase billed by PlayStation, Steam, Xbox or Nintendo Switch, and it does not authorize or block spending of V-Bucks. Configure those routes independently.

Epic says the PIN cannot be deleted after it is set up. Parents can change or turn off individual restrictions, so keep the PIN private and update the permitted settings rather than trying to remove the PIN itself.

Secure console, computer and mobile billing separately

If the child buys Fortnite content through a platform checkout, use that platform’s current family, purchase-approval and spending controls. Menu names and available features vary by platform, device, country and software version, so open the current parental or family settings on each device rather than assuming the Epic PIN will appear there.

Console billing

For PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch billing, the platform account processes the transaction. Require an adult approval or password for purchases, remove the child’s access to the adult payment profile, and review any stored cards or wallet balance on that platform. These controls must be set on every console where the child can sign in.

PC billing

On a PC using Epic checkout, the Epic PIN and removal of stored purchasing methods provide the relevant safeguards. If the computer is shared, also protect the adult operating-system account and browser or password manager that could expose payment details.

Mobile and other device billing

When a device routes a Fortnite purchase through its own store or payment service, use that service’s family approval and payment settings. The Epic account PIN does not extend to a separate store checkout. Confirm the billing account shown on the purchase confirmation before assuming the restriction worked.

Understand the under-13 $100 daily limit

Epic says a player who indicates they are under 13 has a daily purchase limit of $100 for purchases made through Epic payment. The limit applies to Fortnite and other listed Epic products that use Epic payment. If a purchase would exceed the daily amount, a parent or guardian’s parental-controls PIN is required to override the limit and complete it.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online

The limit has two important boundaries:

  • It does not cover a purchase billed by a gaming platform such as PlayStation, Steam, Xbox or Nintendo Switch.
  • It does not cover purchases made with V-Bucks.

Therefore, do not treat $100 as the household’s total daily Fortnite budget. Set a lower family budget through platform controls, avoid leaving payment methods available, and manage the child’s V-Bucks separately.

Control V-Bucks and paid random items

V-Bucks are outside both the Epic payment PIN and the under-13 Epic-payment limit. A child may obtain V-Bucks through a platform transaction, a code or an existing balance, then spend them without triggering those real-money safeguards.

Epic provides a parental setting to allow or block spending V-Bucks, or content purchased with V-Bucks, on paid random items. “Paid random items” are purchases where the reward is not known in advance. The setting is not available in every region, so it may not appear for every account.

  1. Open the child’s Epic Parental Controls page.
  2. Look for the setting covering paid random items bought with V-Bucks.
  3. Choose the restrictive option if you do not want V-Bucks or V-Bucks-purchased content used for those random rewards.
  4. If the option is absent, check the account’s region and use the platform’s spending approvals and your household rules instead; absence of the setting does not mean that V-Bucks are covered by the Epic PIN.

Review both the source of the V-Bucks and the intended purchase. Blocking random-item spending does not necessarily block every ordinary cosmetic or other V-Bucks purchase.

Check whether the account is Cabined

Epic uses Cabined Accounts for players under 13 or below the relevant regional age of digital consent, whichever is higher. While Epic is waiting for parental consent, real-money purchases and some other features are disabled.

A Cabined Account can still use a Fortnite gift-card balance for Epic games such as Fortnite, but Epic says that balance cannot be used for Fortnite Crew. The account status therefore affects what the child can do even before you finish configuring payment controls.

What parents should do

  • Complete the consent process only through the adult account and contact method associated with the child’s account.
  • Explain to the child that disabled checkout features are an account-status protection, not a technical failure.
  • Continue configuring platform controls, because consent does not secure purchases billed by another platform.
  • Check the account after consent is completed; newly available features may change which payment route needs protection.

Set Fortnite and UEFN time limits

Fortnite and UEFN provide account-level time controls that can set a daily amount and permitted time windows. Epic says these settings follow the same Epic account across devices. They can also distinguish Play time from Create time, which is useful when you want to allow editing or building without granting unlimited Fortnite play.

  1. Open the child’s Epic Parental Controls area.
  2. Choose the Fortnite and UEFN time-control settings.
  3. Set the daily allowance.
  4. Set the allowed time window, such as the hours when play is permitted.
  5. Set separate Play and Create limits if your family wants different allowances.
  6. Save the changes and check the account on each device the child uses.

Device and console limits remain independent. A console can reduce the time allowed by the Epic account, but changing a device limit does not change the account-wide Fortnite or UEFN setting. Apply both layers when you need a consistent bedtime or school-day rule.

Use a gift card as a finite balance, not a parental-control feature

An Epic Fortnite gift card can add a limited balance to the Epic account for Fortnite purchases. That finite balance can help you avoid attaching an unrestricted payment method, but it is not a parental setting, does not create a daily time limit, and does not stop purchases through another billing route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Cabined Account, Epic says gift-card balance can be used for Epic games such as Fortnite but not Fortnite Crew. If you use a card, combine it with the Epic PIN, platform purchase approvals and V-Bucks rules rather than treating the balance as a complete spending lock.

Recommended setups for common family situations

Situation Controls to apply Reason
Child plays only on a PC with Epic checkout Epic payment PIN; remove stored purchasing methods; configure Fortnite/UEFN time limits These controls address Epic-processed purchases and account-wide time
Child plays on a console Console family purchase approval and time limits; Epic PIN for any Epic checkout; V-Bucks review Console billing bypasses the Epic PIN
Child uses several devices Epic account controls plus the current family settings on every device Account time settings travel with the account, while device limits are separate
Child is under 13 or below the regional consent age Check Cabined status; complete consent if appropriate; keep platform controls active Real-money features may be disabled while consent is pending, but other billing routes still need protection
Child has V-Bucks available Review paid-random-item permission where offered; restrict how V-Bucks are obtained and spent V-Bucks are excluded from the Epic PIN and the $100 Epic-payment limit

Troubleshoot a purchase or time limit that did not work

A purchase completed without the Epic PIN

Check the receipt or transaction history to identify the processor. If the charge came from a console or another platform, the Epic PIN was not designed to stop it; configure that platform’s approval and payment settings. If the charge used V-Bucks, review the V-Bucks controls and the account’s available balance.

The child exceeded the expected daily budget

Determine whether the transaction was an Epic-payment purchase covered by the under-13 rule or a platform/V-Bucks transaction outside it. The $100 figure is not a combined cap across all routes. Remove saved payment methods and lower the platform’s own spending allowance where possible.

The paid-random-item option is missing

Epic says the feature is not available in every region. Confirm that the account is using the intended region and then rely on platform approvals and household rules for V-Bucks spending if the setting is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The child can play after the account limit ends

Check whether the child is using another Epic account, whether the limit applies to Play or Create, and whether the device has a separate schedule. Recheck the account on every device and use the device-level restriction as a second enforcement layer.

The child cannot buy anything

Review whether the account is Cabined and awaiting parental consent. Real-money purchases are disabled during that period. A Fortnite gift-card balance may still work for eligible Epic games, but not Fortnite Crew.

Maintenance checklist for parents

  • Review the child’s Epic sign-in and connected devices whenever a new console, computer or phone is added.
  • Confirm the billing processor before approving any purchase.
  • Keep the Epic PIN private and change individual restrictions when the family rule changes.
  • Check V-Bucks balances and paid-random-item permissions separately from real-money settings.
  • Revisit account-wide Fortnite/UEFN limits and each device’s schedule after a school-term, holiday or hardware change.
  • Read the current platform and Epic settings when menus or regional availability change; controls can differ by country, device and software version.

Bottom line

Use layered controls: Epic’s PIN and under-13 policy for Epic-processed money, platform family settings for platform billing, a separate V-Bucks review, and both account-wide and device-level time limits. Check Cabined Account status before troubleshooting a blocked purchase, and treat gift-card balance only as a finite funding method. No single Fortnite setting protects every payment route or every device.
