If that control is missing, the card is usually still assigned as a default or backup method, an open order, or a subscription or membership billing method. Change that relationship first, then try again. Removing a card from a wallet does not cancel a membership, reverse an order, or necessarily change a charge already authorized.
Shopping credit, wallet balances, gift-card value, and stored debit or credit cards are separate account features. A retailer may let you manage one without offering a way to cancel, cash out, transfer, or refund another. The exact rules below are documented for the US versions of Amazon, Walmart, and eBay; labels can differ by app version, device, country, and account type.

First identify what you want to change
“Delete my card” can describe several different actions. Choosing the wrong one can leave a recurring bill active or make you think stored credit has disappeared when it has not. Check which account object you are looking at before changing anything.

| Saved debit or credit card | The payment method stored in the retailer’s wallet for future checkout. | An order already placed, a pending authorization, a membership, or a separate backup-payment setting. |
| Default payment method | Which method the retailer normally selects first for eligible purchases or billing. | Other cards, existing orders, or a subscription unless its billing method is changed. |
| Backup payment method | What may be tried if the preferred method cannot complete a charge. | The card’s existence in the wallet; removing a visible default does not prove that no fallback remains. |
| Order-specific payment method | The method attached to one order, when the retailer permits an edit. | The card saved in the general wallet. |
| Subscription or membership billing method | How a recurring service is billed. | The membership itself. Removing a card is not a cancellation request. |
| Retailer balance, shopping credit, cash, or gift-card value | A stored-value balance that can be applied at checkout under that retailer’s terms. | A bank or credit card, and usually the card-removal process. |
Before deleting anything, note the last four digits and expiration date shown for each method, check whether an order or recurring service uses it, and verify whether another method is available. Do not assume that a card disappearing from the wallet will stop a charge that has already been initiated.

A safe, retailer-neutral removal sequence
- Open the account payment area. Look for Wallet, Payments, Payment options, or Your Payments rather than the checkout screen.
- Select the exact method. Confirm the last four digits, card type, and any nickname so you do not alter another card.
- Check its relationships. Look for a Default label, backup-payment setting, open or pending orders, subscriptions, memberships, and recurring billing.
- Move those relationships first. Set another method as default, change the order’s payment method if the retailer allows it, and update subscription or membership billing in its own settings.
- Use the wallet’s removal control. Choose Remove, Delete, or the retailer’s equivalent and complete any confirmation prompt.
- Verify the result. Reopen the wallet, confirm the card is gone, and inspect active orders and recurring services separately. Keep the confirmation screen or email if the retailer provides one.
If no removal command appears after these checks, do not repeatedly retry checkout or deliberately let a payment fail. The card may be locked to a transaction or account relationship that only the retailer can release. Use the account’s current support route and describe the linked order, membership, or subscription.
Amazon (US): remove a card, then handle linked billing
Remove a saved card from Your Payments
- Sign in to Amazon and open Your Account > Your Payments.
- Select the saved card.
- Choose Remove from wallet to delete it. Choose Edit instead if you only need to update the number, expiration date, or billing details.
- Reopen Your Payments to confirm that the card no longer appears.
Amazon specifically warns that changing a saved payment method does not change an open order. If an order is already placed, open that order and use its order-specific payment-change flow when available. Editing the wallet alone will not retroactively replace the method attached to that purchase.
When Amazon will not let you remove it
Amazon Pay’s guidance identifies three common blockers: the card is the default method, it is attached to an active subscription, or it is linked to a pending order. Add another valid method and set it as the new default, then update every linked order, subscription, or membership transaction. Return to Your Payments and retry Remove from wallet.

Amazon Pay also places backup-payment controls under Your Payments > Settings. Review that area if you are trying to prevent a fallback charge. A card that is no longer your primary choice can still matter if it remains configured as a backup method.

Changing details versus deleting the method
If the physical card was replaced and the account shows an old number, editing may not be sufficient. Confirm which digits the issuer changed. Where Amazon displays the old card as a separate method, remove that entry and add the replacement card. If an open order still shows the old method, handle the order itself rather than relying on the wallet update.
Walmart (US): wallet removal and the limited order-edit window
Remove a card from the Walmart wallet
- In the Walmart app or on Walmart.com, open Account > Settings > Wallet.
- Choose Edit beside the card.
- Select the option to remove it. Walmart’s troubleshooting sequence labels this Account > Wallet > Edit > Remove Card.
- Return to Wallet and verify that the correct card is no longer listed.
If a card number changed, Walmart instructs customers to delete the old card and add the new one rather than trying to overwrite the number. Check the digits before saving so a replacement is not mistaken for the original.
Change the method for an existing Walmart order
Wallet removal and an order payment change are separate. For an eligible order, go to Account > Purchase history, select the order, and choose Edit under Payment Method. Walmart says this option is limited to an order in placed or prepared status, can be used once per order, and is unavailable after the order is on the way or delivered.
If the order does not meet those conditions, the wallet card can still be removed if no other relationship blocks it, but that action does not rewrite the order’s original payment arrangement. Check the order page for its current status before attempting the one-time edit.

Handle Walmart+ and other linked billing
Walmart warns that a card linked to an active order, subscription, or membership may not be removable. For Walmart+ billing, open Manage Membership > Payments & Billing and change the method there. Only after the membership points to another method should you return to Wallet and remove the old card.
To replace the wallet’s default, open Wallet, choose the desired method, and select Set as Default. This changes the preferred method for future eligible charges; it does not by itself change an existing order or cancel Walmart+.
Walmart Balance and Walmart Cash are not cards
Walmart lists Walmart Balance among accepted payment methods and says Walmart Cash can be used for purchases in stores and online. These are stored-value or account-credit features, not saved debit or credit cards. Removing a card does not delete either balance.
The cited Walmart payment guidance does not establish a universal process for canceling, cashing out, transferring, or refunding these balances. Read the terms for the specific balance or contact Walmart support rather than treating it like a wallet card. Keep any distinction between a bank-card refund and a retailer-held balance clear when asking for help.

eBay (US): update saved details, but do not assume a removal path
Update a saved card
- Sign in and open My eBay > Payments.
- Under Payment options, choose Edit.
- Update the card details and save.
- Return to Payment options to confirm the change.
At checkout, eBay offers a Remember this card for future orders choice. Clear that choice when you do not want a newly entered method saved for later purchases.
If eBay does not show Remove
The eBay help material covered here explains editing and saving card details, but it does not provide a documented card-removal procedure. Do not invent a hidden menu path. Use the current controls shown in My eBay > Payments; if no removal action is visible, use eBay support and identify the saved method you want removed. Updating a card is not the same as canceling an order or recurring obligation.
Why a saved card cannot be deleted
Use this symptom-to-action checklist instead of repeatedly tapping the remove button.

What deleting a card does—and does not—do
Deleting a saved method is an account-wallet change. It prevents that particular saved entry from being selected as a future wallet option, subject to the retailer’s systems and any separate billing relationship. It does not, by itself, perform any of the following:

- Reverse a completed purchase or refund an order.
- Cancel a pending authorization already sent to the card issuer.
- Change an open order whose payment method is managed separately.
- Delete retailer balance, shopping credit, Walmart Cash, or gift-card value.
- Remove a duplicate card saved under another account, profile, household member, or checkout setting.
If your goal is to stop a future recurring charge, open the recurring service’s billing page and cancel or change that service according to its own controls. If your goal is to dispute a charge, use the retailer and card issuer’s dispute process; deleting the card is not a dispute.
Managing shopping credit, wallet balances, and gift cards
Do not treat stored value like a bank-card record
A shopping app can show a card beside a balance even though they have different rules. A card is normally a funding method connected to an issuer. A balance or credit is held in the retailer account and may be restricted to qualifying purchases, promotional conditions, or a particular region. The wallet’s Remove Card command addresses the former, not the latter.
Check the exact balance type
Identify whether the account shows a retailer balance, promotional shopping credit, cash rewards, or gift-card value. Record the displayed amount and any expiration or eligibility language before requesting a change. The available evidence does not establish one cross-retailer policy for cancellation, refunds, transfer, or expiry, so rely on the named retailer’s terms for that specific balance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAsk support a precise question
When a balance cannot be changed in self-service, tell support the balance name, amount, account email, and the action you want: cancellation, refund, transfer, or an explanation of restrictions. Do not ask only to “remove credit,” because an agent may interpret that as deleting a saved card while you mean stored value.
Preventing an unwanted fallback charge
- In the wallet, identify the current default method.
- Review backup-payment settings where the retailer provides them. Amazon Pay places these under Your Payments > Settings.
- Open each active membership or subscription and confirm its billing method.
- Check open and pending orders separately from the wallet.
- Remove obsolete cards only after another valid method is assigned where required.
- After saving changes, revisit the account the next day or before the next billing date to confirm the new method remains selected.
Avoid leaving an account with no valid method when a paid membership is still active. A failed primary payment can trigger the retailer’s configured fallback behavior, and the precise sequence depends on that retailer’s terms.
App, device, and country differences
The documented paths in this guide are US instructions accessed October 13, 2026. Retailers can rename menus, move Wallet under a different account tab, or expose different controls in iOS, Android, and desktop versions. Country-specific payment rules and account types can also change what appears.
If a label differs, match the function rather than the wording: find the account-level payment wallet, the order’s own payment editor, and the membership’s billing page. Do not assume that a tutorial for another country or an older app version applies to your account. When the documented relationship is absent but removal still fails, provide support with the exact screen name, card’s last four digits, order or membership identifier, and the time of the attempted change.

Quick Recap
A quick decision path
- Is it a saved card? Use the account wallet’s remove control.
- Is it the default or backup? Set another method as default and review fallback settings first.
- Is it tied to an order? Use the order-specific payment editor, if the order status permits one.
- Is it tied to a subscription or membership? Change billing in that service’s settings; removal is not cancellation.
- Is it a balance, cash, or gift card? Follow that retailer’s stored-value terms rather than card controls.
- Is the control still unavailable? Contact the retailer with the relationship that is blocking removal instead of assuming the card has been deleted.
