There is no single Xiaomi switch that disables every AI function. To reduce or stop a particular capability, use the control that matches it: review the feature’s app permissions, change optional settings in the Mi AI suggestions widget, or clear Xiaomi HyperAI Engine data. These actions are separate, and removing one permission does not automatically disable all AI features.
Xiaomi’s controls and available features vary by phone model, HyperOS version, language, and region. The safest approach is to identify the specific feature first, then change only the permission or privacy setting that feature needs.

What “turn off AI” means on a Xiaomi phone
On Xiaomi phones, “AI” is a collection of services rather than one application with one master switch. HyperOS may expose writing assistance, speech recognition, search, translation, summaries, recommendations, and context-aware actions. Each can have different data access and processing arrangements.

That is why disabling location, for example, may affect a location-aware recommendation or proactive action but leave an offline translation tool available. Similarly, clearing the HyperAI Engine’s stored data is not the same operation as revoking permissions, and Xiaomi does not promise that clearing it disables every AI capability.

Xiaomi’s HyperAI Engine Privacy Policy (version v20260803, effective August 3, 2026) says users can switch the service’s location, Bluetooth, device-status, and device-ID permissions on or off. The same policy provides a separate route for clearing the engine’s data. General application permissions use the normal Android/Xiaomi permission screens.
Which AI features your phone can actually use
Before changing anything, check whether the feature is present on your handset. Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 product information lists AI Writing, AI Speech Recognition, AI Search, and AI Translate. Examples include selectable writing styles, smart screen recognition, live transcription, recording summaries, on-device content search, web answers, interpretation, subtitles, and offline face-to-face conversation translation.
Xiaomi explicitly qualifies this list: “Xiaomi HyperAI features are available only on select models, in select languages and regions.” The privacy policy also marks several services as limited to certain device models and system versions. A feature shown on Xiaomi’s global product page may therefore be absent from your phone, disabled for your language, or unavailable in your country.

Check the four variables that determine availability
- Model: Different Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices have different hardware and software support.
- System version: HyperOS releases can add, rename, or remove settings.
- Language: Speech, writing, translation, and transcription support is language-specific.
- Region: Xiaomi can limit a feature or a cloud service by market.
If an AI option is missing, that does not necessarily indicate a permission problem. Confirm the phone model and software build, install available system or app updates, and check whether the feature is supported in your selected language and region.

The exact wording and placement can differ between Xiaomi phone and software versions. If a label is not identical, look for the equivalent permission, privacy, or app-management screen rather than assuming the feature has no control.

How to review permissions for an AI feature
1. Identify the app or service involved
Start with the feature’s visible entry point. A writing tool may be part of the keyboard or an editor; transcription may be associated with Recorder; search may be provided by HyperAI Search; recommendations may appear in the Mi AI suggestions widget. Open the feature’s information or privacy panel when one is available so you are changing the relevant component instead of disabling an unrelated system app.
2. Use the per-app route
- Long-press the app icon.
- Tap Application info.
- Choose Permission management.
- Select a permission and choose the least access level that still supports your intended use, such as “Allow only while using the app,” “Ask every time,” or “Don’t allow,” when those choices are offered.
Xiaomi’s privacy support instructions use this route for general application permissions. The available choices depend on the permission type and your Android/HyperOS version.
3. Use the central permissions route
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Permissions.
- Choose the permission category or the app, then review and change the entries shown.
This route is useful when you do not know which app owns a feature or want to audit every app that can access a category such as location, microphone, contacts, or nearby devices.
4. Read Xiaomi’s explanation before denying access
Xiaomi says it explains why a permission is requested and the possible effect of withholding it. A permission change can make a capability unavailable, reduce its accuracy, or remove context from a result. Denying microphone access can prevent speech recognition; denying location can limit location-aware actions; denying Bluetooth can affect nearby-device context. The precise effect depends on the feature, so treat the explanation on your phone as the authoritative description for that build.
HyperAI Engine permissions you can control directly
The HyperAI Engine policy identifies four permission categories that users can turn on or off:

- Location: Used by features that need location context. The policy distinguishes precise and approximate location in some services.
- Bluetooth: Allows the service to use Bluetooth connection information or nearby-device context where applicable.
- Device status: Covers device-state information needed by certain context-aware functions.
- Device ID: Provides an identifier used by the service for supported operations.
To review them, open the Xiaomi HyperAI Engine entry from the phone’s app or permission-management screens and change each category separately. Do not assume that turning off one item disables the engine, removes its data, or affects every other Xiaomi AI app.
How to turn off personalized recommendations and the User Experience Program
Personalized recommendations
Xiaomi’s HyperAI policy describes an optional personalized-recommendation function. It may use precise and approximate location, device status, step count, and app installation or usage information to create aggregated profiles. The policy says those profiles are saved to Xiaomi servers in encrypted form.
The policy’s stated control is not a general HyperAI switch: “You can control your privacy settings or turn off personalized recommendations at any time in the privacy settings of the Mi AI suggestions widget.” Open the Mi AI suggestions widget, enter its privacy settings, and disable personalized recommendations if that option appears on your phone. The exact widget layout and available choices may differ by version and region.
User Experience Program
The same policy describes a User Experience Program involving location and a Bluetooth MAC address. It says this information is processed on-device and uploaded to the cloud. If you do not want to participate, use the widget’s privacy settings to unenroll. Leaving this program does not revoke ordinary app permissions and does not disable unrelated AI features.
How to clear Xiaomi HyperAI Engine data
Clearing data is appropriate when you want to remove the service’s stored app data or reset its local state. It is not a substitute for changing permissions and is not documented as a way to disable every AI function.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose Manage apps.
- Find and open Xiaomi HyperAI Engine.
- Use the available storage or data controls to clear the service data, then confirm.
Names such as “Clear data,” “Clear storage,” or “Storage” can vary. Clearing data may reset local preferences or require a feature to initialize again. If your goal is only to stop location or Bluetooth access, change that permission instead of deleting the service’s data.
Where Xiaomi says AI data is processed
“On-device” describes a particular feature or data flow; it does not establish that every Xiaomi AI operation stays on the handset. Xiaomi’s policies describe a mixture of local storage, local processing, cloud services, and third-party large-model capabilities.

Why an “on-device” label is not a promise that everything is offline
Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 information describes an “edge-to-cloud AI data security” approach that includes on-device privacy storage and confidential cloud computing. That wording presents a security architecture, not a claim that every model runs entirely on the phone.
The HyperAI Search policy is more specific: it says information used by that search function is stored only on-device. A different section of the policy describes proactive intelligence using device and behavior signals, and it allows screen content to be collected when a command concerns what is currently displayed. Another section describes cloud-stored encrypted profiles for personalized recommendations. These statements can all be true because they refer to different functions.

Look for four separate answers: what information the feature can access, whether it is processed on-device, whether it is stored on-device, and whether any portion is sent to Xiaomi or a third-party service. Do not substitute a marketing label for those details.
How to make a privacy-focused decision
If you want to keep AI but reduce access
- Leave the feature enabled and deny permissions unrelated to its purpose.
- Choose approximate location instead of precise location when the phone offers that choice and the feature still works for you.
- Review microphone, contacts, files, nearby devices, and location access for the specific app or service.
- Keep optional personalized recommendations disabled if you do not want usage-based profiles.
If you want to stop one feature completely
- Disable its relevant permission first.
- Turn off its optional setting in the Mi AI suggestions widget if it is a recommendation or User Experience Program function.
- Clear Xiaomi HyperAI Engine data only when you also want to reset stored service data.
- Reopen the feature and verify that it no longer performs the action; some components may be integrated into system apps and may fail silently or show a permission prompt.
If you want to minimize cloud involvement
- Prefer features whose policy explicitly says the relevant information is stored only on-device, such as the HyperAI Search statement for its indexed information.
- Disable personalized recommendations if you do not want aggregated profiles saved to Xiaomi servers.
- Unenroll from the User Experience Program if you do not want its described location and Bluetooth-MAC upload.
- Check whether a feature uses Private Cloud Compute or another cloud path before treating it as offline.
Troubleshooting common permission problems
The AI feature disappeared after a permission change
That is usually an expected dependency rather than a fault. Restore only the permission the feature’s explanation identifies as necessary, then test again. If the feature still does not appear, verify model, HyperOS version, language, and region support; availability is not uniform across Xiaomi phones.
The permission switch is missing
Some system services expose controls through a central permissions page, a widget privacy panel, or a feature-specific notice instead of the ordinary app screen. Search Settings > Apps > Permissions, inspect the Mi AI suggestions widget, and open the feature’s own privacy settings. Labels can change between software builds.
Clearing data did not stop AI responses
Clearing Xiaomi HyperAI Engine data resets that service’s stored data; it is not documented as a master disable. Revoke the relevant app or service permissions and disable optional settings separately. A different system component may be providing the response.

A feature works locally but still asks for network access
Local processing and network use are not mutually exclusive. A feature can keep one class of content on-device while using cloud services for another operation, an update, a web answer, or a third-party model. Read the feature-specific notice and distinguish local storage, local processing, and cloud transmission.
A repeatable audit checklist
- Write down the exact AI feature you want to control.
- Confirm that your model, HyperOS version, language, and region support it.
- Identify the app or service that presents the feature.
- Open Application info > Permission management, or use Settings > Apps > Permissions.
- Review location, Bluetooth, device status, device ID, microphone, contacts, files, and any other permission shown for that feature.
- Read the feature-specific privacy notice and note whether information is stored or processed on-device, sent to Xiaomi, or handled by a third party.
- Open the Mi AI suggestions widget’s privacy settings and disable personalized recommendations or leave the User Experience Program if those are your concerns.
- Use Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Xiaomi HyperAI Engine to clear data only if resetting stored service data is your goal.
- Test the feature after each change so you know which setting caused a capability to change.
What Xiaomi’s documentation establishes—and what it does not
The official documentation establishes permission-level controls, a documented path for clearing HyperAI Engine data, optional controls for personalized recommendations and the User Experience Program, and feature-specific descriptions of local and cloud handling. It does not establish that every Xiaomi phone has identical labels, that every AI function has a dedicated global toggle, or that all AI operations remain on-device.
For the most accurate result, apply the controls visible on your own phone and read the notice attached to the exact feature. A permission decision should be based on the data that feature needs and the effect of denying it, not on the word “AI” alone.
