How to manage notification summaries on a Google Pixel

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

On a supported Google Pixel, open Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries. Turn the feature on or off there; Google says it is off by default. To stop a particular app from appearing in summaries, open Don’t include these apps on the same screen and select that app.

Notification summaries are optional AI-generated overviews of unread message notifications. They are not available on every Pixel, in every language, or for every notification, so the steps below cover eligibility, app exclusions, expected behavior, and fixes when no summary appears.

Turn notification summaries on or off

Google’s currently published Pixel guidance uses the label Notification summaries. The setting controls the AI summary feature itself, not whether an app is allowed to send ordinary notifications. You can therefore disable summaries without muting messages, and you can keep summaries enabled while excluding only one or two apps.

  1. Open the phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Notification summaries.
  4. Switch summaries on or off.

Google says the default is off. If you have never changed this setting, the phone will normally show the original message notifications without an AI-generated overview. Turning the switch on allows eligible unread-message notifications to be processed for a summary; it does not convert every notification into a summary immediately.

When summaries are enabled, a summary of unread messages can appear in the notification shade. When disabled, Pixel stops generating this type of summary, but the underlying app notifications continue according to their normal notification settings. Existing notifications are not necessarily rewritten after you change the switch, so test with a new message rather than relying on an older item already sitting in the shade.

The wording or capitalization can vary slightly with your Pixel’s software version or language, but the path remains the Notifications settings area described in Google’s guide: Google Pixel Help: Use AI to manage your notifications.

Exclude one app from summaries

You do not have to disable summaries globally. To keep summaries for most apps while leaving out a specific messaging app:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries.
  2. Tap Don’t include these apps.
  3. Select each app you want to omit.

The exclusion list is useful when you want summaries from one messaging service but prefer to read another service’s alerts exactly as they arrive. Select the app whose notifications should not be summarized, then return to the previous screen. The summary switch can remain on for all other eligible apps.

Exclusion affects summary generation for the selected app; it does not uninstall the app or automatically block its regular notifications. You should still receive that app’s normal alerts if its own notification permissions and channels allow them. If you later want the app included again, return to the same list and remove its exclusion. If a summary is missing, checking this list is one of the fastest ways to distinguish an intentional exclusion from a feature failure.

Check whether your Pixel and language qualify

Supported devices

Google lists AI notification summaries for Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-Series models. If your phone is an earlier Pixel or a Pixel A-Series device, the Notification summaries option may be absent even after a system update. The absence of the menu on an ineligible model is different from a toggle that is present but turned off.

Google’s eligibility statement is for the feature generally, not a promise that every model or carrier configuration will expose identical controls. A compatible model still needs the appropriate software components and a supported system language. If you are comparing phones, treat Pixel 9 or later, excluding A-Series, as the stated compatibility threshold rather than as a guarantee that every message will be summarized.

Supported languages

Summaries work in English and Japanese. Your Pixel’s primary system language must be English or Japanese to access the summaries setting. A message written in another language may not be summarized, even when the phone itself is eligible.

To check the primary language, open the phone’s language settings and verify that English or Japanese is the first system language. The primary language matters separately from the language used in an individual conversation. Changing language can alter the labels and availability of notification features, so restart the phone after making a major language change and then look again under Notifications.

Language detection also affects individual messages. Mixed-language text can be difficult for the feature to identify, and a notification made only of emoji may not provide language information at all. For a reliable test, use a normal sentence in English or Japanese rather than a short fragment, a string of emoji, or a message that switches between languages.

What a notification summary contains

When the feature is on, Pixel can summarize unread messages from notifications generated by popular messaging apps. Google gives Google Messages, Android Messages, and WhatsApp as examples, along with other messaging apps. The summary text is marked with a sparkle icon so that it is distinguishable from the original notification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A summary is an additional view of unread notification content. It does not replace the conversation inside the messaging app, and it does not guarantee that every message in a thread will receive an overview. Tap or expand the notification to view the full conversation or the individual messages. If the overview is too brief or you need exact wording, the expanded notification or the messaging app remains the authoritative view.

Because the feature works from unread message notifications, it is not a general-purpose summary of every alert on the phone. Promotional alerts, system notices, and other non-message notifications are not what this control is designed to summarize. The app must also be allowed to post a notification in the first place; a message that never generates an alert cannot appear in a notification summary.

Why some messages have no summary

Google identifies several normal limits:

  • The notification is too short. A brief message may not contain enough text to summarize. A one-word reply or a tiny fragment can therefore appear without an overview.
  • Language detection is uncertain. Mixed-language text or a notification made only of emoji can prevent a summary from being generated.
  • You are actively using the phone. Google says the screen needs to be off briefly before a summary may be produced. Looking at the phone immediately after a message arrives is not a dependable test.
  • The app is excluded. An app listed under Don’t include these apps will not contribute to summaries.
  • The device or language is not eligible. The feature is limited to the supported Pixel generations and English or Japanese described above.

These conditions mean that a missing summary does not necessarily indicate a fault. The original notification can arrive normally while the AI summary is omitted. Results can also differ from one message to the next because length, language, app, and screen state are different.

Fix notification summaries that do not appear

Work through the checks in this order. After changing a setting, send or receive a new message so you are testing a fresh notification rather than an older item already in the shade. Keep the test simple: use an eligible messaging app, a reasonably long English or Japanese message, and a locked screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Confirm the feature and app list

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries.
  2. Make sure summaries are enabled.
  3. Open Don’t include these apps and confirm the messaging app is not selected.

If the summaries menu is missing entirely, check the device and primary-language requirements before trying other fixes. A missing menu on an earlier Pixel or an A-Series model is an eligibility issue, not evidence that the switch is hidden somewhere else.

2. Allow Android System Intelligence notification access

Pixel uses Android System Intelligence for this notification function. In Settings > Notifications > Privacy > Notification read, reply and control, confirm that Android System Intelligence is allowed. If access is disabled, the phone may be unable to process notification content for summaries even though the main summaries toggle is on.

After restoring access, wait for a new notification. Do not assume that an old alert will be reprocessed automatically. If the permission was intentionally disabled for privacy or control reasons, enabling it is a prerequisite for this feature; leaving it off means summaries may remain unavailable.

  • Gemini AI Integration: Built-in Gemini AI assistant supercharges your productivity and creativity, helping you accomplish tasks faster, generate content, and unlock new possibilities right from your smartphone without needing additional apps or subscriptions

3. Turn off Battery Saver while testing

Battery Saver can prevent background processing needed for summaries. Disable it temporarily, wait for a new message, and leave the phone idle long enough for the notification to be processed. You can turn Battery Saver back on after testing, but summaries may again be delayed or skipped while restrictive power controls are active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery Saver can affect both the summary operation and the arrival of some alerts. That is why it is worth testing with the setting off before concluding that the AI feature is broken. If the alert arrives only after Battery Saver is disabled, investigate ordinary notification delivery separately from summary generation.

4. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi and charging overnight

Google advises connecting the Pixel to Wi-Fi and charging it overnight so required AI updates can download in the background. This is particularly useful after a setup, reset, major system update, or period when the phone has been offline.

Overnight charging is not a requirement to keep summaries permanently enabled; it is a practical way to let background components finish updating. Keep the phone connected, leave Battery Saver off while diagnosing the issue, and check the feature again after the update opportunity has passed.

5. Restart after changing permissions or power settings

Restart the Pixel after enabling summaries, restoring Android System Intelligence access, or changing battery settings. A restart gives the notification service a clean start after those controls change. Then test with a new, sufficiently long message in English or Japanese while the screen is off briefly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test the message and timing conditions

Use a notification with enough natural-language text to summarize. Avoid a test consisting only of emoji or a short fragment, and avoid mixed-language text if language detection is likely to be uncertain. Lock the phone and let the screen remain off briefly; summaries may not be generated while you are actively using the device.

Check the result in two stages. First, verify that the original notification arrives. Second, look for the sparkle-marked summary. If the original appears but the sparkle-marked overview does not, focus on eligibility, permission, exclusion, language, length, and screen-off timing. If the original never arrives, use the notification-delivery checks below instead.

Notification summaries versus Notification organiser

Pixel has another notification feature with a similar name. Notification organiser sorts incoming notifications into categories; it does not summarize unread message content. The two controls are separate, so changing one does not switch the other on or off.

Feature Purpose Settings path Eligibility and behavior
Notification summaries Creates an AI overview of unread message notifications. Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-Series; English or Japanese primary system language. Summaries may be absent for short, emoji-only, mixed-language, or actively viewed notifications.
Notification organiser Sorts notifications into categories such as Promotions and news, and Social and suggested content. Settings > Notifications > Notification organiser Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-Series; English primary system language; supported regions are Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Google says Promotions and news are enabled by default in Notification organiser. Social and suggested categories can be enabled in its settings. Because the organiser changes sorting rather than message wording, turning it off will not restore a missing AI summary, and turning summaries on will not categorize unrelated alerts.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint., Etc. For Developers, Carrier Unlocked models will not allow an Unlocked Boot Loader.

The eligibility rules also differ. Notification summaries require English or Japanese as the primary system language. Notification organiser requires English and one of the listed supported regions: Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, or the United States. A Pixel can therefore meet one feature’s language or region conditions without meeting the other’s.

Exclude an app from Notification organiser

If your concern is sorting rather than summarization, Google provides two exclusion routes:

  • Long-press a notification from the app and turn off the organiser for that app.
  • Open Settings > Notifications > Notification organiser > Don’t include these apps > Manage apps, then choose the app.

Those controls belong to Notification organiser. For AI summaries, use the separate Notification summaries > Don’t include these apps list. An app excluded from the organiser can still be eligible for summaries, and an app excluded from summaries can still be sorted by the organiser; the lists do not substitute for each other.

When the problem is a missing alert, not a missing summary

First determine whether the original notification arrived. If the alert itself is absent or delayed, summary troubleshooting may not address the cause. A summary can only be generated from notification content that reaches the phone and remains available as unread content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do Not Disturb silences most notifications while it is active.
  • Battery Saver can stop or delay some alerts and background work.
  • Adaptive Battery can also delay some notifications by restricting background activity.

Check these controls in the phone’s notification and battery settings, then send a new test message. If the original notification appears but has no sparkle-marked summary, return to the summary-specific checks: eligibility, Android System Intelligence access, app exclusions, message language and length, and screen-off timing. Google’s general notification guidance is available in Control notifications on your Pixel phone.

What to do if the Notification summaries menu is unavailable

An unavailable menu usually points to eligibility rather than a hidden switch. Confirm all of the following:

  • The phone is a Pixel 9 or newer model and is not an A-Series device.
  • English or Japanese is the primary system language.
  • The phone has completed pending system and AI component updates.
  • You are looking under Settings > Notifications, not inside Notification organiser.

If all conditions appear correct, connect to Wi-Fi, charge overnight, restart, and check again. Google’s public eligibility guidance does not state that every carrier, region, or software build will expose the control at exactly the same time, so a missing menu can remain a rollout or configuration issue rather than a user error.

Do not confuse an absent menu with an app exclusion. The Don’t include these apps list appears inside the summaries screen; it cannot create the summaries feature on an unsupported phone. Likewise, Notification organiser’s presence does not prove that Notification summaries should be available, because the two features have separate requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility note before changing phones

If your current Pixel does not support notification summaries, Google’s stated requirement is a Pixel 9 or later excluding A-Series models. That is a compatibility threshold, not a recommendation to buy a particular device, and it does not establish a current price or retailer availability. A supported phone still needs English or Japanese as its primary language and can omit summaries for the content and timing reasons described above.

  • Use Wi-Fi and overnight charging for background AI updates.
  • Restart, then test a sufficiently long message while the screen is off briefly.
  • If alerts themselves are missing, check Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver, and Adaptive Battery separately.
  • Look for the sparkle icon to distinguish an AI summary from the original notification.
  • Use the Notification organiser settings only when you want categories, not message summaries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off notification summaries on a Google Pixel?

Open Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries, then switch the feature off. Regular app notifications continue according to their normal settings.

How do I stop one app from being summarized?

Open Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries > Don’t include these apps, then select the app. Remove it from that list later if you want summaries again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Pixel phones support notification summaries?

Google lists Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-Series models. Earlier Pixels and A-Series phones may not show the summaries setting.

Which languages are supported?

Google lists English and Japanese. The primary system language must be English or Japanese to access the summaries setting.

Why did I receive a message but no summary?

The notification may be too short, mixed-language, emoji-only, from an excluded app, or received while the screen was active. Summaries can also be unavailable because of device or language eligibility.

Why is the Notification summaries setting missing?

Check that the phone is a Pixel 9 or newer model excluding A-Series and that English or Japanese is the primary system language. Connect to Wi-Fi, charge overnight for background AI updates, restart, and check again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Notification summaries and Notification organiser?

Notification summaries create AI overviews of unread message notifications. Notification organiser sorts alerts into categories such as Promotions and news, and Social and suggested content. Each has its own setting and eligibility rules.

What should I check if notifications themselves are late or missing?

Check Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver, and Adaptive Battery. These controls can silence, stop, or delay alerts independently of whether an AI summary is generated.

The Bottom Line

Use Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries to turn Pixel’s AI message summaries on or off, and use Don’t include these apps for app-level control. The feature is listed for Pixel 9 and later excluding A-Series, with English or Japanese as the primary language. If a summary is missing, check Android System Intelligence access, app exclusions, Battery Saver, background updates, message length and language, and whether the screen has been off briefly. Keep Notification organiser and ordinary alert controls separate because they solve different notification problems.
