Choose the control that matches what you want
Galaxy settings offer several levels of control. Picking the narrowest one avoids losing alerts you still need.

Samsung notes that menu layouts and options can vary slightly by device model or software version. Google’s Android guidance gives the same warning: “Important: Settings can vary by phone.” If a label below is different on your Galaxy, use the Settings search field for Notifications, Permission manager, or the app’s name.

Turn all notifications from one app on or off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps. Scroll through the list, or use the search control to find the app.
- Tap the app’s name.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn Allow notifications on or off.
Turning the switch off is an app-wide change. The app may still update internally, but Galaxy will no longer deliver its notifications while the switch is disabled. Turn it on again from the same page when you want alerts back.
There is also a shortcut from an alert you have already received. Touch and hold the notification, then tap its settings control to open notification options. Android documents this route as a general alternative; the exact icon and wording can differ on Galaxy phones.
Use the notification panel for a quick change
If the unwanted alert is currently visible, touch and hold it rather than opening Settings first. The notification’s settings control can take you directly to that app’s notification options. This is useful when you do not know the app name or when several apps have similar names. Review the page carefully before switching off the main control: a category-level change is usually safer if you only dislike one type of alert.
Disable one notification category instead of the whole app
Many apps divide alerts into categories such as direct messages, calls, downloads, reminders, or marketing. On the app’s Settings > Apps > app > Notifications page, look below the main switch for the categories the app exposes. Turn off only the unwanted category, or open it to change its sound, vibration, pop-up, and related behavior.
Why categories may not appear
- Categories are created by the app, so one app may offer several while another offers only a single channel.
- Names and controls differ between Galaxy models, One UI releases, and app versions.
- Some categories are fixed by the app and cannot be renamed or removed from Galaxy Settings.
- An app may hide a category until it has generated that type of notification, so check again after using the relevant feature.
If you cannot find a category, check the app’s own settings for notification types, then return to Galaxy Settings. Do not assume that the absence of a category means the app cannot send alerts; it may simply group all alerts together.
Examples of narrow changes
- Keep a chat app’s direct-message category enabled but disable its promotional or recommendation category.
- Keep calendar reminders visible but make a low-priority update category silent.
- Keep delivery-status alerts but turn off pop-ups so they remain in the notification shade without covering the screen.
- Keep security or account warnings alerting while silencing routine status updates.
Category settings are persistent. If an app update changes its categories or adds a new one, revisit the list instead of assuming the previous arrangement still covers every alert type.
Control sound, vibration, pop-ups, and silent delivery
Within a category, Galaxy may provide separate choices for sound, vibration, and pop-up display. The exact controls depend on the app and phone. A category can therefore remain enabled while becoming less intrusive.

Android’s general help describes alerting notifications as able to sound and appear on the lock screen, while silent notifications do not sound or vibrate but remain in the notification shade. Galaxy labels can differ, so verify the result by sending a test alert or waiting for the next normal notification.

Avoid confusing phone volume with notification permission
If a notification is present but quiet, the app permission may be working normally. Check the category’s sound setting, the phone’s notification volume, vibration settings, and any active Do Not Disturb or Mode rule. Media volume does not always control notification volume, so adjust the notification slider specifically when your model separates the controls.
Manage lock-screen visibility and sensitive content
An app can be allowed to notify you while its message text stays hidden until the phone is unlocked. Open the Galaxy’s lock-screen notification settings from Settings and search for Lock screen notifications if the path differs on your model. Options commonly include showing notifications, hiding them, or hiding sensitive content.
A system-wide lock-screen choice can affect every app. Some Galaxy versions also expose per-app controls, but availability is not universal. If a notification appears in the shade after unlocking but not on the lock screen, check these privacy settings before disabling the app’s notification permission.

Hiding sensitive content can leave an indicator visible while concealing the sender or message preview. Hiding lock-screen notifications entirely prevents the alert from appearing there, but it does not necessarily remove it from the notification shade after you unlock the phone.
Do Not Disturb and Modes: temporary filtering
Use Do Not Disturb or a Mode when the goal is to limit interruptions temporarily or on a schedule. This is different from turning off an app’s permission: the app remains allowed to post notifications, but the current mode decides whether they make sound, vibrate, or interrupt you.
Set up a temporary quiet period
- Open Settings and search for Do not disturb, or open it from the notification panel’s quick settings if your Galaxy provides the tile.
- Choose whether the rule is immediate, scheduled, or tied to a mode such as sleep or work.
- Review the exceptions for people and apps, plus alarms and other allowed interruptions.
- Save the rule and check its end time or schedule so it does not remain active unexpectedly.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking Do Not Disturb when an app appears to be missing alerts. If one app must always break through, add it to the mode’s allowed-app list rather than disabling Do Not Disturb for everything.
Modes are useful when the same quiet rules recur. A scheduled sleep mode can filter alerts overnight, while a meeting or work mode can apply a different set of allowed people and apps. Because the app’s notification permission remains enabled, normal delivery resumes when the mode ends.
Notification permissions versus camera, location, and other app permissions
The word “permission” covers two different systems. Notification permission controls whether an app can send alerts. The app’s Permissions page controls access to device data and features such as the camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, or nearby devices.

To review feature access, open Settings > Apps > app > Permissions. You can also open Samsung’s Permission manager and select a permission type to see which apps have access. Google’s instructions explain both per-app and permission-type views in its Android app-permission guide.
Disabling a notification does not revoke camera or location access. Conversely, denying a data permission can break an app feature without changing whether the app is permitted to post notifications. Change each setting for the outcome you actually want. For example, if you want a navigation app to stop announcing updates, change its notifications; if you want to stop it using location, change its location permission instead.
If notifications from Secure Folder apps are missing
Secure Folder has its own notification and background-activity controls. Samsung’s troubleshooting steps apply specifically to apps installed or running inside Secure Folder.

- Tap Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the affected app and enable Allow notifications.
- If the option is present, enable Allow background activity while locked. Samsung says this option is available only in the latest Secure Folder app version.
- Temporarily turn off Power saving while diagnosing the problem.
- Check Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb and its allowed-app rules.
- Open the phone’s battery or background-app controls and remove Secure Folder from Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps if it is listed.
After changing these controls, unlock Secure Folder and wait for a normal test event. Re-enable power saving after testing if you need it; the purpose of turning it off is to identify whether background restrictions are suppressing delivery.
Do not test only by opening the app. Opening it can refresh data manually and make the problem appear fixed even though background delivery is still blocked. Use a normal incoming message, reminder, or other event while Secure Folder is locked.
Galaxy Store notification exception
Samsung’s Galaxy Store support instructions describe a specific limitation: Galaxy Store notifications cannot be completely turned off from that area, but individual Notification categories can be switched off. Treat this as a Galaxy Store-specific behavior, not a rule for every app. The cited Samsung page is Manage app updates on a Samsung Galaxy device.
Troubleshoot an app that still does not alert
The main switch is off
Return to Settings > Apps > app > Notifications and enable Allow notifications. Then check whether the specific category is also disabled.
Only one type of alert is missing
Open the category list and inspect each relevant category. An app update can add a new category or change its default behavior, so review the list after updating the app.

The alert is in the shade but makes no sound
Check whether the category is set to silent, whether its sound is set to none, and whether the phone is in Do Not Disturb or a Mode that suppresses sound and vibration. Also check the phone’s notification volume and vibration settings.
The alert sounds but does not appear on the lock screen
Review lock-screen notification visibility and the sensitive-content choice. A privacy setting may be hiding the notification or its text while leaving delivery enabled.
Alerts arrive only after opening the app
For Secure Folder apps, check background activity, power saving, sleeping-app lists, and Do Not Disturb as described above. For other apps, inspect Galaxy’s battery and background restrictions for that app; an app that is prevented from running in the background may not receive events promptly.

Use Settings search for the app name and Notifications. If the app has no category controls, it may expose only the app-wide switch or require changes inside its own settings. Exact labels vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Changes do not seem to take effect
Check that you changed the correct copy of the app. Secure Folder can contain a separate instance with separate notification controls. Also confirm that you changed the category that generated the alert, not a similarly named category. Send or wait for a fresh notification after saving, because an older alert already in the shade may retain its previous appearance.

Model and software-version notes
Samsung’s Galaxy support article covering these controls was last updated June 9, 2026. It covers common Galaxy families, but the available options and exact paths still vary by model and software. Google’s Android notification guidance likewise treats its labels as general guidance rather than a guarantee for every Galaxy release; its Modes documentation notes that some instructions apply only to Android 14 and newer.
When your screen does not match the steps, check Settings > About phone > Software information for the Android and One UI versions, then use Settings search. Do not infer that a control is absent merely because it has moved into a category, mode, or lock-screen submenu.
