The safest approach is to separate two jobs: use local manual saves for important checkpoints and alternate decisions, and use Witcher 3’s built-in cross-progression only to carry the latest save of each save type to another platform. Before changing devices, update the game, confirm the edition, connect the same CD PROJEKT RED account on both platforms, create a fresh transfer save, and wait for the cloud icon beside its name.
The save-management rule that prevents most losses
Do not treat cross-progression as a complete historical backup. CD PROJEKT RED Support describes its scope precisely: “Cross progression provides the latest save for every save type.” That means the feature is designed to continue your current progress on another platform, not to preserve every manual save you have ever made as an online archive.

Keep meaningful local manual saves for moments you may want to revisit: a difficult quest before a major choice, a branching romance decision, a build experiment, or a point before entering downloadable content. Separately, create one new save when you want to move between platforms. Confirm that the cloud icon appears beside that save before you leave the source platform.
The official material reviewed does not publish one universal local-slot limit or one retention rule for every platform. Save lists, deletion behavior, and autosave rollover can differ by platform and edition. Inspect your own Load Game list and protect important saves instead of relying on an assumed number of slots.

Once your account is linked, cross-progression is enabled by default according to CD PROJEKT RED’s instructions. You can also check or change it under Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression.
Prepare both platforms before moving a save
Preparation is where you avoid the most confusing failures. Complete these checks on the source and destination platforms before deleting anything or changing editions.
- Update the game: install the latest patch available for each platform. The official cross-progression instructions tell players to ensure the game is current.
- Identify the edition: record whether each installation is the base game, GOTY, or Complete Edition. The title shown in your console library and the title shown in the game can matter when diagnosing a missing save.
- Confirm the account: use one CD PROJEKT RED account for the source and destination. A different account will not expose the uploaded save.
- Review the local list: open Load Game and identify the manual saves you must keep. Do not delete a branch merely because you expect the cloud service to retain it.
- Match modifications: if the source save uses mods, prepare the destination with the same compatible set. A mod mismatch can stop the save from loading correctly.
- Keep the source available: leave the original platform and its local saves untouched until the destination save has loaded successfully.
Enable cross-progression and upload a transfer save
Use the in-game procedure rather than assuming that a previously linked account has synchronized every old save.

- Use the on-screen Cross Progression command.
- Connect the game to your CD PROJEKT RED account when prompted. If you need to check the setting later, open Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression.
- Return to your save list and create a new manual save specifically for the transfer. Give it a recognizable name or position in the list so you can identify it on the destination.
- Wait for the cloud icon to appear beside that save’s name. Treat the icon as the upload confirmation. Linking the account alone is not proof that an older local save has uploaded.
- Leave the source save intact. Your older manual saves are useful checkpoints even after the new save is available online.
Creating a fresh transfer save is safer than selecting an old entry and hoping it has already synchronized. It gives you a clear point in time and a visible confirmation state.

Load the save on the destination platform
- Install or update the game on the destination platform so it is running the latest available patch.
- Check the destination’s edition against the source: base, GOTY, or Complete.
- Open My Rewards and connect the same CD PROJEKT RED account used on the source platform.
- Open Load Game.
- Locate the uploaded save. The save you created for transfer should be the easiest one to identify, especially if you noted its position or name.
- Load it before making further changes. Confirm that Geralt’s level, inventory, quest state, and recent location match the source platform.
- After confirming the transfer, create a new local manual save on the destination. This gives you a current local checkpoint before you continue playing.
If the uploaded entry does not appear, do not overwrite local saves or delete the source installation. Work through the compatibility checks in the troubleshooting section first.
Use local manual saves for checkpoints and alternate choices
Cross-progression is best for carrying your current line of play. Local manual saves are better for preserving history. A conservative save plan uses both without confusing their purposes.
Keep a small set of meaningful checkpoints
Save before decisions that can change quests, relationships, rewards, or the direction of a story. Also save before a major battle, before starting downloadable content, and after completing a difficult objective. These saves are valuable because they let you return to a known state without depending on the latest cross-progression entry.

When you want to test two choices, make a manual save immediately before the decision. Continue one branch, then return to the checkpoint if you want to explore the other. Use clear notes in your own naming system—such as “before romance choice” or “before final contract”—rather than relying on an unnamed sequence of entries.

Do not assume every older save is retained online
The documented cross-progression scope is the latest save for each save type. It does not promise an archive of every prior manual save, nor does the reviewed official material establish one universal local retention policy. Preserve irreplaceable checkpoints in the local list and inspect the list regularly.
Protect the source until the move is proven
Do not delete the source installation, remove its local saves, or begin a new run on the destination until the transfer save loads and you have made a destination-side checkpoint. This is especially important when changing editions or using mods.
Edition compatibility: base game, GOTY, and Complete
Edition mismatch is a common reason a save appears to be missing even when the account is correct. CD PROJEKT RED Support states that console saves are not compatible between the base version and the GOTY/Complete Edition because the console treats them as separate products.
In practical terms, a local save created in the base console product should not be expected to appear as a normal local save in the GOTY or Complete product. The publisher points to cross-progression as the route for continuing from the base version. That route still requires the current in-game account-linking procedure, an uploaded save with the cloud icon, and the same account on the destination.

Before troubleshooting a missing save, write down the exact product installed on each platform. A correct account cannot make incompatible local product files interchangeable. If you are moving from the base version to a GOTY or Complete installation, retain the base installation and its saves until the cross-progression save has loaded successfully in the new product.
Mods and cross-platform loading
Mods add another compatibility condition. CD PROJEKT RED advises using the same mod set on both platforms for cross-progression. A save created with missing, different, or incompatible mods may fail to load correctly on the receiving installation.
Before uploading a modded save
- List the mods enabled in the source installation.
- Check that the destination can use the same compatible versions.
- Avoid changing the mod set between creating the transfer save and loading it elsewhere.
- Keep an unmodded checkpoint if you need a fallback that does not depend on the mod setup.
On consoles, achievements and trophies are disabled on modded saves. That consequence is separate from whether the save transfers, but it matters when deciding which branch to use for achievement progress.

Troubleshoot a save that is missing or will not load
Check one variable at a time. Do not respond to a missing entry by deleting files or repeatedly overwriting saves.
The cloud icon never appears
- Return to Load Game and confirm that cross-progression is connected.
- Open Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression and verify the setting.
- Create a new manual save rather than waiting for an older local save to upload automatically.
- Wait for the save entry to show the cloud icon before leaving the source platform.
- Check that the game is updated and that the platform has a working connection to the account service.
The destination shows no uploaded save
- Open My Rewards and verify that the destination is connected to the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Confirm that you are looking in Load Game, not only at local saves created on the destination.
- Check the source save again. If it lacks the cloud icon, return to the source and create a fresh transfer save.
- Compare the base, GOTY, or Complete edition on both ends.
- Keep the source saves untouched while you repeat the account and edition checks.
The save appears but will not load
- Compare the enabled mods on both platforms. Use the same compatible set, or test an unmodded checkpoint if one exists.
- Check for an edition mismatch, especially between the base console product and GOTY/Complete.
- Confirm that both installations are current and that the destination is using the account that uploaded the save.
- Do not overwrite the source with a new playthrough while diagnosing the problem.
An older manual save is missing
That does not necessarily indicate a failed transfer. Cross-progression supplies the latest save for each save type rather than an unlimited historical archive. Look for the local entry on the original platform, and do not infer a universal retention or slot limit from another platform’s behavior.
Switch players: use the current in-game procedure
Earlier Switch guidance referred to moving from older Steam or GOG cloud integration to the Cross Progression feature introduced in update 4.04. For a current transfer, follow the present in-game workflow: update the game, connect the CD PROJEKT RED account through Cross Progression, create a save, wait for the cloud icon, and connect the same account through My Rewards on the destination.
Treat older cloud-integration instructions as historical context, not as a substitute for the current account-linking and cloud-icon checks.
A conservative routine for every platform change
- Finish the current session: make a manual checkpoint after the latest important event.
- Create a transfer entry: make another new manual save intended specifically for cross-progression.
- Verify upload: wait for the cloud icon beside the transfer entry.
- Record compatibility: note the source edition and whether the save uses mods.
- Prepare the destination: update the game and connect the same CD PROJEKT RED account under My Rewards.
- Load and inspect: verify the character, inventory, quests, and location.
- Make a destination checkpoint: save locally before continuing.
- Retain the source: keep the original local saves until you are satisfied that the move worked.
This routine gives you two safety nets: the cloud-confirmed current save for changing platforms and local manual checkpoints for branches and recovery.
