That is the main account-level control, but it does not cover every Microsoft privacy setting. Windows 11, Edge, Copilot, third-party data sharing, activity history and website privacy signals each have separate controls. Use the sections below to adjust the surfaces you actually use, and remember that opting out changes how ads are selected rather than guaranteeing fewer ads or zero tracking.
What Microsoft’s advertising controls actually change
Microsoft’s privacy controls are distributed across your account, Windows, Edge and Copilot. A change in one place does not automatically apply everywhere. For example, disabling the Windows advertising ID affects Windows apps that use that identifier, while Edge’s browsing-activity setting controls whether Microsoft can use activity such as browsing history and viewed web content to personalize Microsoft services.

| Surface | Where to change it | Primary effect | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft account | Privacy dashboard > More privacy settings > Review ad settings | Turns off personalized advertising associated with the account and lets you remove listed interests. | It does not remove every ad, erase all activity immediately, or control every browser or website cookie. |
| Windows 11 | Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers | Controls the advertising ID used by compatible Windows apps and Windows’ personalized tips, ads and recommendations. | It does not govern website cookies, every Microsoft ad system or third-party advertising. |
| Microsoft Edge | Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Privacy | Controls use of Edge activity for personalization of ads, search, shopping, news and other Microsoft experiences. | It does not automatically delete local browser history when cloud activity is deleted. |
| Copilot | Copilot > Settings > Personalization | Provides an in-product Allow ads personalization control. | Availability and labels can change; the account dashboard remains the broader Microsoft-services control. |
| Edge Global Privacy Control | Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Privacy | Sends websites a signal that you prefer your data not be sold or shared for targeted advertising. | Websites decide whether to honor it, and Microsoft currently documents availability in the United States. |
Microsoft says turning off a personalization feature can alter relevance without reducing the number of ads. Treat each setting as a separate choice about data use and ad selection, not as a universal “no ads” switch.

Turn off personalized ads for your Microsoft account
This is the most important step if your goal is to stop Microsoft from associating personalized advertising with your account across Microsoft services.

- Sign in to your Microsoft account and open the Microsoft Privacy dashboard.
- Under More privacy settings, select Review ad settings. This opens Personalized ad settings.
- Turn See ads that interest you off.
- Under Choose the things that interest you, review the interest categories Microsoft lists. Remove interests that are inaccurate, outdated or unwanted.
- Review Share my data with third parties for personalized ads separately. If you do not want that sharing choice enabled, switch it off as well.
The dashboard labels can change as Microsoft updates its account pages. If the wording differs, look for the current personalized-advertising or ad-settings control rather than assuming a similarly named Windows or Edge switch does the same job.
What you should expect after switching it off
- Microsoft should stop using the account-level personalized-ad setting to select ads that are tailored to your listed interests and associated account data.
- You may still see the same number of ads. Microsoft’s Windows privacy guidance explicitly says disabling an advertising identifier does not reduce ad volume; the ads may simply be less relevant.
- Other Microsoft services can have their own personalization controls. Review Windows, Edge and Copilot if you want a broader change.
- The setting does not by itself remove browser cookies, local history, advertising identifiers held by other companies or data already stored by third parties.
Manage personalized advertising in Windows 11
On supported Windows 11 releases, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. Review both of the privacy choices shown there.
Turn off the Windows advertising ID
Disable Let apps show my personalized ads by using my advertising ID. This affects Windows applications that choose to use Microsoft’s advertising identifier. It does not control every form of interest-based advertising, including website cookies or all ads served by Microsoft and third parties.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft Support explains the trade-off this way: “Turning the advertising ID off will not reduce the number of ads you see, but it may mean that ads are less interesting and relevant to you.” In practical terms, you are changing the signal available to participating apps, not blocking their ad spaces.
Turn off personalized tips, ads and recommendations
Review the separate setting for personalized tips, ads and recommendations and turn it off if you do not want Windows to tailor those suggestions. Keep this choice distinct from the advertising-ID switch: one controls a device identifier used by apps, while the other controls Windows’ own recommendation and promotional experiences.

If your menu says “General” instead
Newer Windows 11 versions use Recommendations & offers. Some systems may still display an older General privacy page. Search Settings for “advertising ID,” “recommendations” or “personalized offers” if the newer path is not present. The exact layout depends on your Windows release and Microsoft’s current Settings design.
Windows 10 should not be your primary reference for a current setup: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The privacy concepts are similar, but labels and available controls can differ on unsupported or older installations.

Edge can use more than page visits to personalize Microsoft experiences. Microsoft describes the relevant activity as including browsing history, favorites and collections, usage data, viewed web content and device data.
- Open Edge and select Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services, then the Privacy section.
- Turn off the option that allows Microsoft to save browsing activity for personalization of Microsoft Edge and Microsoft services.
Why this Edge switch matters beyond ads
The same activity can influence personalized ads, search results, shopping recommendations, news and other Microsoft experiences. Turning it off therefore changes more than advertising. Search and news suggestions may become less tailored, even though the setting is often sought by people who are primarily concerned about ads.
Microsoft says activity is not collected for this personalization during InPrivate or Guest browsing. Those modes limit collection for the described personalization purpose; they are not a promise that websites, internet providers or every security and diagnostic system will retain no data.

How Edge and the account setting work together
The account-level See ads that interest you choice can prevent personalized advertising based on data such as browsing history even when the Edge activity control is still on. Conversely, turning off account ad personalization does not automatically stop every use of Edge activity for search, shopping or news personalization. If you want to limit both advertising and those other experiences, review both controls.
Cloud activity versus local history
If you are signed in to Edge with a Microsoft account, you can review and delete shared activity through the account privacy dashboard. Deleting browsing activity from the cloud dashboard does not automatically delete the local history stored in each device’s Edge profile. To remove local records, use Edge’s own clear-browsing-data command on every device where the history exists, and check whether synchronization is enabled before assuming the two records are identical.
Manage advertising personalization in Copilot
Microsoft’s Copilot guidance describes a separate in-product control:
- Open Copilot.
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Turn Allow ads personalization off.
Copilot also directs users to the personalized ad settings in the Microsoft Privacy dashboard for a broader Microsoft-services choice. Use the Copilot switch when you want to control the Copilot experience specifically, and check the account dashboard if you want the account-level setting changed as well.
Microsoft’s Copilot support page states that Copilot does not show personalized ads to users under 18. Eligibility rules, product surfaces and control labels can change, so do not treat that statement as a substitute for checking the current settings shown on your account.

Use Edge’s Global Privacy Control correctly
Edge includes a separate Global Privacy Control (GPC) setting under Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Privacy. When enabled, Edge sends websites a signal that you prefer your data not be sold or shared for targeted advertising.
GPC is a website-facing preference signal, not a replacement for Microsoft’s account ad toggle. A website may honor, ignore or interpret the signal according to its own legal and technical obligations. Microsoft currently documents this Edge option as available in the United States, so its presence may vary by region and release.
Enable GPC if you want participating websites to receive that preference automatically. Keep the Microsoft account, Windows and Edge personalization settings in place if you also want to change how Microsoft uses data within its own services.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review interests, third-party sharing and dashboard activity
Remove unwanted interest categories
The personalized-ad settings page lists interests Microsoft associates with your account. Removing an item corrects the profile used for ad selection, but it is not the same as deleting all account activity. Review the list periodically, especially after a shared device has been used by another person or your interests have changed.
Make the third-party sharing choice separately
Share my data with third parties for personalized ads is a distinct choice on the account dashboard. Do not assume that turning off See ads that interest you automatically documents or changes this sharing preference. Open the separate control and set it according to your preference.

Clear activity without overstating the result
The Privacy dashboard is also where Microsoft lets you view or clear account activity data. Microsoft says that after you clear activity, removal from its systems begins. That wording describes a process, not an instant deletion guarantee. Synchronised activity, local browser records, service logs and data already held by third parties can have different retention and deletion paths.
For a thorough cleanup, handle the relevant layer separately:
- Clear the activity categories offered in the Microsoft Privacy dashboard.
- Clear local Edge history and site data on each device where you used the browser.
- Review Windows and Copilot personalization switches.
- Check the third-party sharing option on the account ad-settings page.
- Use GPC for participating websites where that option is available.
Choose the right combination for your goal
| Your goal | Controls to review | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Stop personalized ads tied to a Microsoft account | Account Privacy dashboard: See ads that interest you; review interests and third-party sharing. | Ads can continue to appear and may still be selected using non-account signals. |
| Reduce personalization inside Windows apps | Windows 11 advertising ID and personalized tips, ads and recommendations. | Only participating apps and Windows recommendation surfaces are affected. |
| Prevent Edge activity from shaping Microsoft experiences | Edge browsing-activity personalization setting. | Search, shopping and news personalization may also become less tailored. |
| Limit Copilot ad personalization | Copilot > Settings > Personalization > Allow ads personalization, plus the account dashboard for broader coverage. | Control availability and wording can change. |
| Ask websites not to sell or share data for targeted advertising | Edge Global Privacy Control. | Microsoft documents current availability in the United States, and websites may not honor the signal. |
| Remove records from both cloud and device | Clear dashboard activity and clear local Edge data separately. | Cloud deletion does not automatically erase local history or third-party copies. |
Troubleshoot when ads still look personalized
You still see ads after opting out
That result is expected. Opting out generally changes the selection method, not the existence or number of ads. Check that the account switch is off, then review the Windows advertising ID, Edge browsing-activity setting and Copilot control if those products are involved.
The setting is missing
Sign in to the account that is actually used by the service. Work, school and personal Microsoft accounts can expose different policies and dashboards. In Windows, search Settings for the relevant term because Microsoft moves controls between pages. In Edge, update to a supported release and check the full Privacy, search, and services section rather than relying on a shortened settings search result.
Ads changed on one device but not another
Account settings can follow your sign-in, while Windows advertising-ID settings are device-level. Check each Windows installation and each Edge profile. A browser profile that is not signed in, or a device that has not synchronized recent settings, may continue using its previous local configuration.
Old browsing history remains visible
Dashboard activity and local Edge history are separate stores. Clear the local browser data on the affected device, and repeat the process for other devices or profiles. Allow time for account-side removal to propagate; Microsoft does not promise that clearing the dashboard produces instantaneous deletion from every system.
A website ignores Global Privacy Control
GPC is a signal, not a technical block. If a site does not honor it, use that site’s own privacy or cookie controls and review its policy. GPC still remains useful for sites that recognize the preference, but it cannot enforce a result on every domain.
Quick Recap
A practical privacy-setting checklist
- Open the Microsoft Privacy dashboard and turn off See ads that interest you.
- Remove inaccurate interests.
- Review and, if desired, disable Share my data with third parties for personalized ads.
- In Windows 11, disable the advertising ID and personalized tips, ads and recommendations if you do not want those features.
- In Edge, decide whether Microsoft may save browsing activity for personalization.
- In Copilot, review Allow ads personalization.
- Enable Edge GPC if you are in a supported region and want websites to receive the preference signal.
- Clear cloud dashboard activity and local browser history as separate tasks.
- Recheck settings after major Windows, Edge or Copilot updates because labels and availability can change.
