On Android, open the Google app’s Permissions page or use Permission manager. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings > Privacy & Security for camera and microphone, and Location Services for location. The labels and choices vary by Android manufacturer, Android release, iOS version, and device.
Changing a permission affects the Google app’s ability to use that hardware or location data; it does not create one universal privacy switch for every Google service, website, or source of location information.

Find the right control for your phone
| Phone | Camera and microphone | Location | Activity indicators |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | Settings > Apps > Google > Permissions | Google app’s permission page, or Settings > Privacy/Security & privacy > Permission manager | Privacy dashboard shows recent permission use; Android may also provide device-wide Camera access and Microphone access switches |
| iPhone or iPad | Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera or Microphone | Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then Google | Green or orange status indicator; Control Center can identify recent camera or microphone use |
On Android, the exact menu names depend on the phone maker and software version. If you do not see a menu shown here, use Settings search for Google, Permissions, or Privacy dashboard. On Apple devices, Google appears in the camera or microphone list only after the app has requested that access.
These controls are per app and per permission. Turning off the microphone does not automatically turn off camera or location access, and changing Google’s permission does not change permissions granted to Chrome, Google Maps, Google Assistant, or another app. Review each app separately when you want a broader privacy change.

Android: change Google app permissions
Use the Google app’s App info page
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps. If your phone does not show a complete list, tap See all apps.
- Select Google. Be careful to choose the Google app, not a similarly named service.
- Tap Permissions.
- Tap Camera, Microphone, or Location.
- Choose one of the options offered on your phone. Android commonly provides Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow for camera, microphone, and location. Location can also offer All the time. Older or customized Android versions may show fewer choices or use different wording.
For a permission you want to remove completely, choose Don’t allow. To restore it later, return to the same page and select an allow option. Android can ask again the next time a feature needs access, depending on the choice you made and the app’s behavior.
Allow only while using the app is a useful middle setting: Google can use the permission while its screen or an eligible feature is active, but it is not granted unrestricted background access. Ask every time, where available, makes Android display a prompt whenever the app requests access. Read the prompt before approving it, because a choice made there can replace the setting you selected previously.
Use Permission manager instead
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy, Privacy, or a similarly named menu.
- Open Permission manager.
- Choose Camera, Microphone, or Location.
- Select Google, then set the available allow, ask, or deny option.
This route starts with the type of data or hardware rather than with an app. It is useful when you want to review every app that can use the microphone, camera, or location, not just Google. It can also reveal that another app, rather than Google, is responsible for an unexpected permission prompt.

Review recent access in Privacy dashboard
Android’s Privacy dashboard lists recent permission activity. In the documented Google flow, Android 13 displays up to seven days of activity, while Android 12 displays the preceding 24 hours. Open Settings > Privacy (or Security & privacy) > Privacy dashboard, select a permission, and tap an entry to see the app and time of use. The dashboard is an audit view; change the grant on the Google app’s Permissions page or in Permission manager.
A dashboard entry tells you that the operating system recorded use; it does not mean Google is continuously recording or storing everything captured. For more context, open the Google app’s own settings and review voice, Lens, or location-related controls. The dashboard’s time range and display can differ on a manufacturer’s version of Android.
Check device-wide camera and microphone switches
Some Android phones include separate privacy controls named Camera access and Microphone access. These switches can block that hardware for every app, including Google, even when the Google app’s individual permission still says that access is allowed. Look under Settings > Privacy or Settings > Security & privacy. Turn the device-wide switch back on before troubleshooting an app that suddenly cannot record audio or video.

These controls may also be available as Quick Settings tiles. A disabled tile can make Lens or voice search fail without changing the Google app’s permission page. If an administrator manages a work profile or a family device, a policy may hide or lock the switch; in that case, only the administrator can change it.
Set location precision separately from permission
On Android versions that support it, the Google app’s location permission can include an Approximate or Precise choice. This is the accuracy level granted to the app. It is different from the phone’s broader Location Accuracy setting, which controls how the device combines available signals to estimate its position. You can therefore have location permission enabled while limiting Google to an approximate area, or have precise permission selected while the device’s overall accuracy setting affects the resulting fix.
Location permission and the main device Location switch are separate checks. If Location is turned off for the whole phone, an app-level grant cannot produce a current device fix. Turn the device Location switch on only when you want location-based features, then verify Google’s individual setting and precision choice.
iPhone and iPad: change Google app permissions
Allow or block camera access
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Camera.
- Turn the switch beside Google on or off.
The Google app is listed after it has asked for camera access. Turning the switch off prevents the app from opening the camera until you grant access again. If Screen Time, a device-management profile, or another restriction prevents camera use, the switch may be unavailable or the request may not appear.
Allow or block microphone access
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Microphone.
- Turn the switch beside Google on or off.
Apple requires an app to request permission before it can use the microphone. Apple’s iPhone guide explains that apps must request permission and explain why they are asking in Control access to hardware features on iPhone. If you previously selected “Don’t Allow,” the app may not show a new prompt; change the switch in Settings instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose Google’s location access
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Tap Google.
- Select an option shown on your device, such as Always, While Using the App, Ask Next Time, or Never.
Not every app or iOS version offers every option. If Google is absent, open the app and use a feature that needs location, then return to this list after the permission request appears. The main Location Services switch must also be on; turning it off overrides individual app choices.

When iOS offers Precise Location, its switch controls whether Google receives a more exact position or only an approximate area. This setting is separate from choosing While Using the App or Always: one controls timing, the other controls accuracy.
Use Apple’s indicators to notice access
A green indicator appears when an app is using the camera, including when the camera and microphone are being used together. An orange indicator appears when an app is using the microphone without the camera. Open Control Center to see which app recently used either input. These indicators help you notice activity; the per-app switches in Privacy & Security are where you grant or revoke access.
An indicator can remain visible briefly while an app finishes using hardware, so check Control Center and the app you were using before assuming unexpected access. Indicators do not show location use; review Location Services and its status list for that permission.

What each Google app permission enables
Camera
Camera access powers camera-based features in Google Lens. Google describes Lens uses including translating text, searching for objects, and obtaining details about places. A camera grant made through Lens is shared automatically with Google Search, so revoking the Google app’s camera access can disable or limit those Lens and Search functions. Text searches, saved images, and other features that do not need a live camera can continue to work.
Allowing camera access does not mean every Google screen opens the camera. The app requests or uses it when a feature needs a live view. You can deny the request, continue with typed search, or choose an existing image when Lens offers that alternative.
Microphone
Microphone access supports voice input in the Google app and voice-related Assistant features. The “Hey Google” wake feature uses the microphone in the background while that feature is enabled. Google notes that Assistant or the Google app needs microphone permission for its respective voice functions. Denying the permission leaves keyboard and other non-voice input available, but voice commands and dictation that depend on the microphone will not work.

Microphone permission is not the same as permission to save your voice activity to a Google Account. Account activity controls, device permissions, and the operating system’s indicators are separate settings. If you want to review or delete saved voice activity, use your Google Account controls rather than relying only on the app permission switch.

Location can help Search, Assistant, and Lens return nearby results and updates. Examples include finding coffee shops, bus stops, and ATMs near you. If obtaining a current location fix takes a long time, Google may use a device location from the last time the Google app was used. With location denied, you can still include a place name in a query, such as coffee shops in Chelsea, to request results for a specific area.
App permission is not the only possible source of location-related information. Google notes that websites and apps can receive an IP address as part of internet connectivity, and the location source shown in Search can differ. Turning off the Google app’s location permission therefore limits its direct access to the device location; it does not promise that every online request is anonymous or that no approximate location can ever be inferred.
Choose the least access that still works
- Occasional camera scans: On Android, use Ask every time if available, or grant camera access only when you plan to use Lens. On iPhone and iPad, leave Google’s Camera switch off until needed, then turn it off again afterward.
- Voice search only when requested: Deny microphone access when you do not use voice input. If you use “Hey Google,” the wake feature requires microphone access while enabled.
- Nearby results while using Search: Choose While Using the App rather than continuous background access when your phone offers that distinction.
- Maximum location reduction: Select Don’t allow on Android or Never on iOS, and add a place name to searches when you want geographically targeted results.
- Reduce precision: Where Android offers it, choose approximate location instead of precise location. Review the device’s Location Accuracy setting separately if the resulting position is unexpectedly broad or inaccurate.
- Temporary testing: If a feature fails, grant only the one permission it needs, test it, and then return to the setting you prefer. This avoids leaving camera, microphone, and location enabled simply because one feature was being diagnosed.
Troubleshoot a permission that seems ignored
Google does not appear in the list
On iPhone or iPad, an app appears under Camera, Microphone, or Location Services only after it requests that access. Open Google and start the feature that needs the permission, respond to the prompt, then revisit Settings. On Android, use Settings search for Google or open Apps > See all apps if the app is not visible in the first list.
The setting is present but the feature still fails
- Confirm the app-level permission is allowed.
- Check the whole-device Location, Camera access, or Microphone access switch.
- Close and reopen Google after changing the grant.
- Install any pending Google app or operating-system update, then test again.
- Check whether a work profile, parental control, or device policy is enforcing a restriction.
A permission grant cannot fix a damaged sensor, blocked network connection, or an account feature that is unavailable. Use the permission screen to isolate access first, then investigate those separate causes.
Voice search or “Hey Google” stopped working
- Open the Google app’s permission page and confirm that Microphone is allowed.
- On Android, check that the device-wide Microphone access switch is on.
- On iPhone or iPad, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Review the app’s own voice or wake-feature setting if you intentionally disabled “Hey Google.”
- Try a short voice search while watching the Android dashboard or Apple orange indicator to confirm which app is requesting the microphone.
Lens cannot scan or identify something
- Confirm that Google has camera permission.
- On Android, check the device-wide Camera access control if your phone provides one.
- On iPhone or iPad, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
- Reopen Lens after changing the permission so it can request the camera again.
- Use a saved photo or typed query if you do not want to grant live camera access.
Nearby results show the wrong area
- Verify that Location Services (iPhone/iPad) or the Android location permission is enabled for Google.
- On Android, check whether Google has approximate rather than precise access and review the separate Location Accuracy setting.
- Remember that Google may use a previous device location when a current fix is delayed.
- Specify a place name in the query when you need results for a different area.
- Check that the device date, time, and network connection are normal, since stale conditions can delay a fresh location fix.
Android and iPhone: important differences
| Question | Android | iPhone or iPad |
|---|---|---|
| Where do I start? | Google’s App info page, or Permission manager. | Privacy & Security, then Camera, Microphone, or Location Services. |
| Can access be requested repeatedly? | Often yes with Ask every time, depending on permission and Android version. | Ask Next Time may appear for location; camera and microphone generally use an on/off grant. |
| Can I limit accuracy? | Approximate or precise location may be offered. | Precise Location can be turned off for supported apps. |
| How do I notice use? | Privacy dashboard and, on some phones, system privacy indicators. | Green camera, orange microphone, and Control Center history. |
Neither platform’s labels are universal. A phone maker can reorganize Android menus, and an iOS update can change the wording or available choice. Use the closest matching permission category rather than treating a missing label as evidence that the app has unrestricted access.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off microphone access for the Google app?
On Android, open Settings > Apps > Google > Permissions > Microphone and choose Don’t allow. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn Google off. A device-wide Android Microphone access switch can block all apps as well.
How do I let Google use my camera again?
On Android, return to the Google app’s Permissions page and choose an allow option for Camera. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and turn Google on. Reopen Lens after changing the setting.
Can I allow location only while I use Google?
Usually. Android may offer Allow only while using the app, while iOS may offer While Using the App. Select that option instead of All the time or Always when you want nearby results during active use without continuous background access.
Why is Google missing from iPhone Camera or Microphone settings?
Apple lists an app after it has requested that permission. Open Google, start Lens or voice search, respond to the request, and then return to Settings > Privacy & Security. Device restrictions can also prevent a request from appearing.
Does denying location make Google searches anonymous?
No. It prevents the Google app from directly receiving the device location permission, but websites and apps can receive an IP address as part of internet connectivity, and Google may use other signals. Add a place name to specify the area you want.
What is the difference between approximate and precise location?
The choice controls how accurately the app can receive your position. It is separate from whether access is allowed and, on Android, separate from the device-wide Location Accuracy setting. Approximate access can still support broad local results.

Use your phone’s Settings—not a single in-app switch—to control Google’s camera, microphone, and location access. Android offers app permissions, Permission manager, precision choices, and a Privacy dashboard; iPhone and iPad use Privacy & Security, Location Services, and hardware indicators. Grant only the level of access you need, check device-wide controls when a feature fails, and remember that turning off one permission does not erase every other source of location or account activity.
