How to manage location sharing and privacy in Google Maps

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop someone seeing your live location in Google Maps, open Maps, choose your profile picture or initial, tap Location sharing, select that person, and tap Stop. On a computer, open Menu → Location Sharing and select Stop beside the person. Android also has a device-and-account-level pause switch, but turning it off pauses updates without ending existing shares.

That distinction matters because Google Maps location sharing is only one part of your location privacy. Recipients may see more than a moving dot, Timeline can retain a separate history, and device permissions or Google account settings can allow other location signals. Use the control that matches what you are trying to change.

What Google Maps Location Sharing reveals

Location Sharing is an intentional, recipient-by-recipient share. You choose people, and each person appears as an entry you can review or stop. It is not the same as making your location public to everyone who can find your Google account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says a recipient can see:

  • Your name and profile photo.
  • Your recent device location, including updates made while Google apps are not actively open.
  • Your device’s battery level and whether it is charging.
  • Arrival or departure events if that recipient adds a notification for a selected place.

The location shown is the recent location reported by the device. If the phone is offline, powered down, has location disabled, or cannot obtain a reliable signal, the recipient may see an older update rather than a current position. The sharing entry itself remains active until you stop it or the selected duration expires.

A recipient can add up to five arrival or departure notifications for their own account. Google says you receive an email, and may also receive a push notification when Maps notifications are enabled, if someone adds one of these alerts.

These details make Location Sharing more consequential than a simple map pin. Battery status can reveal whether a phone is likely to remain reachable, while an arrival or departure rule can create notifications tied to a place and time. Review the recipient list whenever a relationship, household arrangement, travel plan, or work responsibility changes.

Review every person who can see your live location

Android and iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose Location sharing.
  4. Review the people listed. Tap an entry to inspect its status, duration, and available controls.

The list is the fastest way to identify an active share with a friend, family member, or another account. Review it after changing phones or Google accounts, because Android’s system-level control is specific to both a device and an account.

Check the account indicator before making changes if several Google accounts are signed in. A share created under one account will not necessarily appear when you are viewing another account. On iPhone and iPad, use the Maps app for the recipient list; the Android system-level Google Location Sharing menu described below is not an iOS settings path.

Computer

  1. Open Google Maps in a browser.
  2. Choose Menu → Location Sharing.
  3. Select a person’s entry to view the available details or stop the share.

Google requires a mobile device to initiate real-time sharing, but you can manage existing Location Sharing settings from a computer. If the computer does not show an expected entry, check the same Google account in the mobile app and confirm that the account is eligible for the feature.

Stop sharing with one person

In the Maps app

  1. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Tap Location sharing.
  3. Select the person you want to remove.
  4. Tap Stop and confirm if Maps asks.

This ends the share for that recipient. It does not automatically change your other recipients, Timeline history, or the location permissions granted to other apps.

On a computer

  1. Open Google Maps and choose Menu → Location Sharing.
  2. Find the person’s entry.
  3. Choose Stop beside that entry.

Stopping a share also ends arrival and departure notifications that depend on that share. A recipient cannot continue receiving updates from that stopped entry, although information they already saw or recorded outside Maps is not something the stop control can retrieve.

Android system settings

Android provides another path to the same person-specific list:

  1. Open Android Settings.
  2. Tap Location.
  3. Choose Location services.
  4. Tap Google Location Sharing.
  5. Select the person and tap Stop.

Because this control is device- and account-specific, check every Android device and Google account combination that might have its own sharing state. Stopping one entry here does not grant or revoke location permission for unrelated apps.

If you are trying to remove every recipient, repeat the person-specific stop action for each listed entry. There is no single Timeline switch that removes Maps recipients, and changing a phone’s general location permission is not a substitute for clearing the recipient list.

Pause updates without ending shares (Android)

If you need a temporary pause rather than a permanent change, open Settings → Location → Location services → Google Location Sharing and turn off Use Location Sharing. Google describes this as pausing updates for that device and account.

Turning off Use Location Sharing does not stop existing person-specific shares. The shares remain configured, and updates resume when you turn the setting back on. Use this option only when you intend to resume sharing later. If a person should no longer have access, use their individual Stop control instead.

Control Scope Immediate effect What remains
Maps Stop for a person One recipient Ends that live-location share Other recipients, Timeline, and app permissions are unchanged
Android Use Location Sharing off One Android device and account Pauses location updates Existing shares remain and can resume when re-enabled
Timeline controls Account location history Stops or deletes history according to the selected setting It does not end a live Location Sharing recipient
Device or app location permission Device, app, or browser Changes whether that software can request device location It does not by itself remove a Maps recipient

Manage arrival and departure notifications

Location Sharing and location alerts are related but distinct. A person who receives your shared location can configure an alert for your arrival at, or departure from, a place they select. Google says you receive an email and may also receive a push notification when Maps notifications are enabled. Up to five such notifications can be added per person.

Turn off notifications while keeping the share

  1. Open your Google Account’s Location Sharing settings.
  2. Find the setting named Allow Location Sharing notifications.
  3. Disable it.

This removes the notification layer while leaving the underlying live-location share active. If you want that person to stop seeing your location altogether, return to Maps Location Sharing and use Stop; stopping the share automatically ends its dependent notifications.

If an alert seems unexpected

  • Review each recipient in Maps Location Sharing rather than relying only on a notification email.
  • Check whether the alert is an arrival/departure rule set by a recipient, not a new recipient added to your account.
  • Stop the person’s share if you do not want them to receive any more live updates.
  • After stopping, verify that the person no longer appears as an active entry on the device where you made the change.

Disabling notifications is useful when you still want a trusted person to have access but do not want emails or push messages about alert changes. It does not hide your location from that person. Only stopping the underlying share removes their live access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep Timeline separate from live sharing

Timeline is an opt-in history feature. When enabled, it regularly saves precise device locations, including periods when Google apps are not being used. Google explicitly describes Timeline and Location Sharing as separate controls: Location Sharing can work while Timeline is off, and disabling Timeline does not end a live share.

Stop or delete Timeline history

Use your Google Account activity controls to stop saving Timeline data or delete existing history. Google offers automatic deletion choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. These are retention settings for Timeline history, not durations for a person-specific live share.

Deleting Timeline data does not retract a location already shown to a recipient through Location Sharing. Conversely, stopping a recipient does not promise that historical Timeline records have been deleted. Review both areas when your goal is a clean break from past and present location exposure.

Google notes that privacy-setting screens are being updated gradually, so labels or menu layouts may differ from older screenshots. Follow the current names shown in your account rather than assuming that an older guide’s path is unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Timeline is therefore best treated as an account-history question: what locations were saved over time, how long should they remain, and what should be deleted? Location Sharing is a live-access question: which specific people can receive recent updates now? Answering one does not answer the other.

Check device and account location permissions

Choosing a Maps recipient is only one privacy layer. Google’s privacy guidance says apps and websites may receive device location depending on your phone’s location setting and each app or browser’s permissions. Some Google apps may also estimate location from an IP address. Those signals are separate from the list of people in Maps Location Sharing.

Use a layered review

  1. Review Maps Location sharing and stop recipients who should no longer have access.
  2. On Android, inspect Settings → Location → Location services → Google Location Sharing and confirm whether Use Location Sharing is paused or active.
  3. Review location permission for apps and browsers in the phone’s operating-system settings. Remove Allow all the time access from apps that do not need it, where your device offers that choice.
  4. Review Timeline and its automatic-deletion setting in your Google Account.
  5. Check Google Account privacy and activity controls if you want to limit stored location history or other account activity.

Changing an app permission can prevent that app from obtaining new device readings, but it is not a substitute for removing a Maps recipient. Similarly, turning off a Maps share does not revoke location permission from a ride, weather, navigation, or browser app.

Review browsers as well as installed apps. A website can have its own permission in the browser, while a Google service may use account settings or an approximate signal such as an IP address. The practical result is that a clean Maps recipient list does not guarantee that no software can process any location-related signal.

When controls or entries are missing

The Location Sharing option is unavailable

Google says feature availability can depend on age, region, supervised-account restrictions, and Google Workspace administrator settings. A managed work or school account may not expose the same controls as a personal account. Confirm that you are signed into the intended account, then check whether an administrator or family-management policy applies.

Eligibility can also explain why instructions differ between two people or two accounts. Do not assume a missing menu means that a share is active or inactive; verify the signed-in account and any organization or family restrictions first.

You can manage but not initiate sharing on a computer

That behavior is expected: Google says a mobile device is required to initiate real-time Maps sharing. Use the Maps app on an eligible phone to create a new share, then use a computer for supported management tasks.

A stopped person still appears

Reopen the current account’s Location Sharing list and verify that the entry is no longer active. If multiple accounts are signed in, switch accounts and check each one. On Android, also inspect the device-level Google Location Sharing list, because a different device/account combination can have its own state. A stale map view or an old notification is not proof that a new live update is still being sent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A recipient sees an old location

Location Sharing reports a recent device location, not necessarily a continuously refreshed position. Lack of connectivity, a powered-off phone, disabled device location, or permission changes can leave the last reported point visible for a time. To end access rather than merely prevent a fresh update, use the person-specific Stop action.

Privacy checklist for changing phones or accounts

  • On the old phone, open Maps and review every Location Sharing recipient.
  • Stop shares that should not transfer to the new setup.
  • If the old device is Android, check its Google Location Sharing system list and the Use Location Sharing state.
  • Sign into the new device with the intended Google account before creating any new share.
  • Review Timeline separately; live-sharing changes do not delete stored history.
  • Audit app and browser location permissions on both devices.
  • If an account is supervised or managed by an organization, verify which controls the administrator or family manager allows.

A quick privacy audit

When you need a complete review rather than a single stop action, work from the narrowest control to the broadest:

  1. List every person under Maps Location sharing, and stop entries that are no longer justified.
  2. Inspect any arrival or departure notifications and decide whether to disable notifications or end the underlying share.
  3. On each Android device, check the device-and-account Use Location Sharing switch.
  4. Review Timeline collection, existing history, and the 3-, 18-, or 36-month automatic-deletion choice.
  5. Audit operating-system, app, and browser location permissions.
  6. Check whether a supervised account, Workspace administrator, or regional eligibility rule limits what you can change.

This order prevents a common mistake: changing a broad phone setting while leaving a specific recipient configured, or deleting history while forgetting that a live share is still active.

What to remember

Use person-specific Stop when the relationship or permission ends. Use Android’s Use Location Sharing switch only for a temporary pause on that device and account. Treat Timeline as a separate history system, and check app permissions and account privacy settings for other ways location can be collected or estimated. This layered approach tells you who can receive live updates, what those updates can include, and which past records require a separate cleanup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop sharing my location on Google Maps?

Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing, select the person, and tap Stop. On a computer, use Menu → Location Sharing and choose Stop beside that person.

Can someone see my battery on Google Maps Location Sharing?

Yes. Google says a recipient can see your device’s battery level and whether it is charging, along with your name, photo, and recent device location.

Does turning off Timeline stop live location sharing?

No. Timeline and Location Sharing are separate controls. Turning off or deleting Timeline history does not end a live share; stop each recipient in Maps.

How do I pause Google Location Sharing on Android?

Go to Settings → Location → Location services → Google Location Sharing and turn off Use Location Sharing. This pauses updates for that device and account but leaves existing shares configured, so updates resume when you turn it back on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a recipient know if I stop sharing?

Stopping ends that person’s live share and any arrival or departure notifications that depend on it. They may still retain information they already saw or recorded outside Maps.

Why can I not find Location Sharing in Google Maps?

Availability can depend on your age, region, supervised-account status, or Google Workspace administration. Confirm the signed-in account, and remember that a mobile device is required to initiate real-time sharing even though existing settings can be managed on a computer.

The Bottom Line

For a permanent change, stop each recipient in Maps. For a temporary Android pause, turn off Use Location Sharing—but remember that configured shares remain. Review Timeline, arrival alerts, app permissions, and account restrictions separately because none of those layers is automatically cleared by a single Maps action.
