Report winnings as income, keep winnings and losses documented separately, and treat any payer withholding as a prepayment rather than your final tax bill. Because poker cash flow is uneven, review your expected federal tax whenever results or other income change and reserve cash as it arrives instead of relying on a year-end guess.
This guide covers federal rules for the 2026 tax year. Your state, filing status, other income, withholding, credits, deductions and the facts of your poker activity can change the result. The IRS’s Publication 505 (2026) and current Form 1040-ES instructions control for your filing.

What poker income must you report?
The IRS treats gambling winnings as taxable income. That includes cashes from tournaments, cash-game results, online payouts and other gambling proceeds. The IRS says winnings are reportable whether or not you receive Form W-2G; a missing form does not make the money tax-free. See the IRS’s Publication 17 (2025) and its Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (01/2026).

W-2G withholding is not your final tax rate
Under Publication 505 for 2026, certain gambling winnings from a wagering pool, including payments to poker-tournament winners, are subject to 24% federal income-tax withholding when the winnings are more than $5,000. The payer reports the amount and withholding on Form W-2G. The 24% is a prepayment: your eventual federal liability could be higher or lower after your full return, other income, deductions, credits and withholding are considered.
Keep each W-2G and enter its withholding with your other federal tax payments when preparing the return. Do not assume that a tournament’s 24% deduction means you owe exactly 24%, and do not assume a tournament with no withholding has no tax due.
How the 2026 gambling-loss rule changes your budget
For a 2026 federal return, Publication 505 limits the gambling-loss deduction on Schedule A to the lesser of 90% of gambling losses or gambling winnings. The deduction is generally available only when you itemize, and it is not a simple reduction of the gross winnings you report. Older explanations that describe a dollar-for-dollar deduction up to winnings are not reliable for 2026.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose your records show $10,000 of poker winnings and $4,000 of documented losses during 2026. You still track and report the $10,000 of winnings as income. Ninety percent of the losses is $3,600; because that is less than $10,000, $3,600 is the federal Schedule A gambling-loss limit before considering whether you itemize and whether any other current-year rule affects your return. This example is not a personal tax calculation.
If losses are $12,000 against $10,000 of winnings, 90% of losses is $10,800, but the limit is the lesser amount—$10,000. The rule therefore prevents a deduction above winnings and can also leave 10% of otherwise documented losses outside the deduction. Keep the tax year attached to any explanation: a later Congress or a new IRS publication could change the percentage.
When do irregular poker results require estimated payments?
Federal income tax is a pay-as-you-go system. Publication 505 states: “The federal income tax is a pay-as-you-go tax.” If your poker income is not sufficiently covered by withholding, you may need estimated payments; the IRS specifically says, “If you receive gambling winnings not subject to withholding, you may need to pay estimated tax.”

- Do you expect to owe at least $1,000 after subtracting withholding and refundable credits?
- Will your withholding and credits be less than the smaller of 90% of your current-year tax or 100% of your prior-year tax? For certain higher-income taxpayers, the prior-year comparison is 110% rather than 100%.
Both parts and special situations matter. Use the current IRS Estimated tax FAQ, Publication 505 and Form 1040-ES worksheet rather than a generic quarterly-tax percentage. Your filing status, wages, spouse’s withholding, investment income, credits and prior return can materially change the answer.
Prior-year safe harbor versus a current-year estimate
A prior-year safe-harbor approach uses the applicable percentage of your prior-year tax and is often easier to administer when poker results are unpredictable. A current-year estimate can better match a year in which winnings are unusually high or low. Compare both on the current IRS worksheet and make sure your total withholding plus payments satisfy the rule you are relying on. A safe harbor can prevent an underpayment penalty; it does not necessarily mean your final return will show no balance due.
A practical cash-flow system for poker players
Tax law does not prescribe a poker-specific savings percentage. The following process manages the timing problem without pretending one reserve rate fits every taxpayer.
- Log activity immediately. Enter every tournament or session while the information is available. Record the date, activity type, venue or platform, amount won or lost and the cash movement.
- Collect evidence in a separate folder. Save W-2G forms, tournament statements, account histories, payment-provider records, bank deposits and withdrawals, canceled checks, wagering tickets and receipts. Match each document to the relevant ledger entries.
- Reconcile on a fixed schedule. At least monthly, compare your ledger with poker-room statements and bank or payment accounts. Investigate missing payouts, duplicate entries and amounts that were recorded as net results rather than gross winnings and separate losses.
- Build a whole-return estimate. Start with all household income, including wages and investment income, then enter withholding, refundable credits, deductions and the poker amounts on the current IRS worksheet. Include any W-2G withholding; do not use the tournament deduction as a substitute for the estimate.
- Move a personally calculated reserve. Transfer an amount based on that whole-return estimate to a separate savings account whenever cash arrives. Recalculate after a large cash, a winning streak, a major loss, a job change, a new credit or a change in withholding. The transfer is a budgeting choice, not an IRS recommendation.
- Schedule payments before deadlines. If the worksheet indicates estimated tax, follow the current Form 1040-ES payment schedule and retain confirmations. Do not wait until filing season to discover that a withholding shortfall accumulated.
- Review state and local rules. Federal guidance does not answer every state or city question. Check the rules for your residence and, where relevant, the location or jurisdiction connected with the gambling activity.
Why a fixed “poker tax percentage” is risky
A headline reserve such as 25% or 30% ignores tax brackets, filing status, wages, self-employment or business questions, credits, itemized deductions, state tax and withholding already taken. The IRS sources establish reporting, payment and recordkeeping duties, but they do not publish a universal poker reserve rate. Use a current estimate and keep the reserve adjustable.

Separate bankroll money from tax money
A volatile bankroll and a tax reserve serve different purposes. Keep the reserve in an account you can access for a payment even during a losing month, and do not count it as money available for the next buy-in. When a payout is split among bankroll, living costs and reserve, record the full winning and the transfers separately. Moving money between your own accounts does not replace the session record or change the amount of winnings to report.
Reforecast after a large result
A single large tournament cash can change the estimated-tax calculation even if the rest of the year is quiet. Update the worksheet when a result materially changes your projected winnings, when another household income source changes, or when withholding is adjusted. A losing month does not automatically erase an earlier payment obligation, and a late-year win may leave less time to build cash for a payment. Keep a dated copy of each estimate so you can explain why a payment amount changed.
What records should you keep?
IRS Publication 529 (12/2020) says, “You must keep an accurate diary or similar record of your losses and winnings.” Its examples remain useful for organizing evidence, although you should check current-year deduction rules before filing.

Minimum diary fields
- Date of each specific wager, session or tournament.
- Type of activity, such as a named tournament, cash game or other table game.
- Name and address or location of the gambling establishment, or identifying platform details for online play.
- Names of people present when relevant to identifying the session.
- Amounts won and amounts lost, recorded separately rather than only as a net figure.
Supporting documents
- Forms W-2G and 5754, where issued.
- Tournament buy-in, payout and result records.
- Wagering tickets, receipts and canceled checks.
- Credit-card records, bank withdrawals and deposits.
- Statements or payment slips from the gambling establishment or platform.
- Account exports, emails and payment-provider histories that tie the activity to dates and amounts.
A spreadsheet, bookkeeping application or paper ledger can make the diary easier to maintain. None replaces the underlying evidence. A notebook marketed as a gambling-winnings-and-losses ledger is optional; it is not IRS-approved and cannot guarantee that a deduction will be allowed.

How to reconcile winnings, losses and cash movement
Use one row per session or tournament where practical. A useful spreadsheet layout has columns for date, venue or platform, activity, buy-in or funds at risk, payout, separately documented loss, payment date, W-2G number, withholding and evidence location. Keep a running total of winnings and losses in separate columns.
Cash movement and taxable reporting are not always simultaneous. A payout may arrive days after a tournament, funds may remain in an online account, and a W-2G may cover a particular payment rather than your entire year. Reconcile the event record, the payer statement and the bank or wallet movement instead of treating a deposit as the only proof.
Handling online accounts and multiple payment methods
Download account histories regularly rather than assuming a platform will preserve old records indefinitely. If you move funds through several wallets or bank accounts, retain the original transaction detail and avoid counting the same transfer as a new win. Label deposits, withdrawals, buy-ins and payouts consistently, then tie each payout to the tournament or session that produced it. Where a platform statement shows only a net account change, preserve any available hand, tournament or transaction detail that separates wins and losses.
Withholding and estimated payments compared
| Feature | Payer withholding | Estimated payment |
|---|---|---|
| Who sends the money | The payer deducts it before paying certain winnings. | You send a payment to the IRS based on your own estimate. |
| Relevant 2026 poker example | More than $5,000 from a qualifying wagering pool, including certain poker-tournament prizes, is subject to 24% federal withholding. | May be required when expected tax after withholding and refundable credits is at least $1,000 and the IRS percentage test is not met. |
| What it proves | That the payer withheld a stated amount shown on Form W-2G. | That you made a payment for the period; it does not determine your final liability. |
| What to do at filing | Report the income and claim the withholding with your other payments. | Apply the payments with withholding and credits against the calculated tax. |
Neither method changes the requirement to keep your own complete activity records. If withholding already covers the applicable safe-harbor test, additional estimated payments may not be required, but the current worksheet should make that determination.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reporting only net poker profit
Problem: Combining winning and losing sessions into one annual number can understate reportable winnings and obscure the loss limitation.
Fix: Preserve gross winnings and losses as separate totals, supported by session-level records, then apply the current return instructions.

Questions that require personal or state-specific advice
Federal sources do not establish whether your poker activity is a trade or business, whether you qualify as a professional gambler or which activity-related expenses you may deduct. Do not assign yourself a tax classification based only on frequency, skill or intent. Those questions depend on facts and current law.
State and local treatment can differ from federal treatment, including rules for reporting, deductions, withholding and where gambling income is sourced. Confirm the requirements for your state of residence and any other jurisdiction that may apply. A qualified tax professional can help reconcile W-2G forms, a detailed diary, other income and itemized deductions; verify credentials and current-year availability before relying on advice.
Year-end filing checklist
- Download every W-2G and payer statement for the year.
- Export or print poker-room and tournament histories before access changes.
- Reconcile your diary totals to bank, card and payment-account records.
- Separate gross winnings, documented losses and federal withholding.
- Run the current IRS worksheet, including other household income, withholding and credits.
- Check whether the 2026 Schedule A 90% limitation and itemization rules apply to your losses.
- Confirm federal estimated payments and payment confirmations.
- Review state and local filing obligations.
- Retain the diary and supporting documents with the filed return records.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I owe tax if I never received a W-2G?
Generally, yes. Gambling winnings are reportable whether or not a payer issues Form W-2G. Use your own session diary, platform statements and payment records to identify all winnings.
Is the 24% tournament withholding my final tax?
No. For qualifying poker-tournament pool winnings over $5,000, 24% federal withholding is a prepayment. Your final result depends on all income, withholding, credits, deductions and filing facts.
Can I subtract poker losses from winnings before reporting income?
Do not report only a net figure. Report winnings and document losses separately, then apply the current deduction and itemization rules. For 2026, the Schedule A loss limit is the lesser of 90% of losses or winnings.
Do all poker players have to make quarterly estimated payments?
Not necessarily. The general test considers whether you expect at least $1,000 due after withholding and refundable credits and whether payments meet the applicable 90% current-year or 100% prior-year test, with a 110% prior-year figure for certain higher-income taxpayers.
What should my poker tax reserve percentage be?
There is no IRS-prescribed poker percentage. Estimate your whole-return liability using current IRS worksheets, account for withholding and other income, and adjust the reserve as results change.
What records are most useful if the IRS asks about my activity?
Keep an accurate diary with dates, activity, venue or platform, people present when relevant, and separate amounts won and lost. Retain W-2G or 5754 forms, tournament records, tickets, receipts, bank and card records, and platform statements.
The Bottom Line
Track every poker result as it occurs, keep winnings and losses separate, and treat withholding as only a prepayment. For 2026, check the 90% gambling-loss limit, use the current estimated-tax worksheet when withholding may be short, reserve cash from each payout, and verify state rules before filing.
