1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep Frostpunk’s city stable by treating heat, coal, and food as one connected loop: heat the buildings that need it, track the coal cost of your settings, and turn raw food into Food Rations at a Cookhouse. Check conditions and supplies regularly rather than relying on one fixed build order; the right balance changes with temperature, population, research, laws, and scenario.
How heat and coal work together
The Generator is the city’s main heat source, and its settings determine how much coal it burns. The community-maintained Frostpunk Wiki’s Generator reference lists consumption at Steam level 1 and Range 1 as 6 coal per hour, or 144 coal per day before efficiency technologies. The page reports higher use as power rises, and extending range also increases consumption. Treat these as wiki-reported game values; check your game version and scenario before assuming they apply unchanged.

Think of your coal stockpile as a budget for the Generator and any other active heating. Raising power or range may protect more buildings or provide more warmth, but it also spends that budget faster. Use the temperature forecast and the condition of homes and workplaces to decide when extra heat is actually needed.

Choose how to cover buildings
Heat coverage and heat intensity are different decisions. The Generator’s range determines the area it reaches, while Steam Hubs provide additional heat zones and heaters support individual buildings. For clustered buildings, compare whether a Steam Hub can cover several at once; for an isolated building, a heater may be the practical choice. Each option’s value depends on the layout, how many buildings need heat, and when they need it.
#1 Best Overall
- POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVAL GAME: In Frostpunk, players will take on the role of leaders of a small colony of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world that was hit by a severe ice age. Their duty is to effectively manage both its infrastructure and citizens.
- STRATEGY BOARD GAME: Make the Laws, send out expeditions to uncover the fate of humanity in the frozen wastes, face the consequences of your actions in front of those you swore to protect.
- MULTIPLE PATHS TO VICTORY: The players will decide the fate of their people. Will you treat them like another resource? Are you going to be an inspiring builder, a fearless explorer, or a bright scientist? Is your rule going to be a sting of tyranny or an era of law and equality?
- HIGHLY VARIABLE: The core gameplay is brutal, challenging, and complex, but easy to learn. The citizens won’t just be speechless pieces on the board. Society members will issue demands and react accordingly to the current mood, so every decision and action bears consequences.
- NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This board game is designed for 1 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 16 and older. Average playtime is approximately 120-150 minutes.
The community guide to A New Home recommends putting early buildings near the Generator, then balancing heaters and Steam Hubs as the city expands. That is advice for that scenario, not a universal optimum. The guide also suggests adjusting Generator heat around warmer periods and colder conditions, including night-time demand. Recheck the forecast and affected buildings before changing settings.
Use overdrive as a temporary buffer
The Generator reference describes overdrive as adding heat without extra coal consumption, but it builds stress that can threaten the Generator. It can help when immediate warmth matters and your coal budget is tight; it is not a substitute for watching the stress meter. Treat it as a temporary measure and monitor stress while it is active.

How to keep food moving into rations
Raw food and Food Rations are separate stages. Raw-food sources include Hunters, Hothouses, scouting locations, an outpost, and a law-based alternative, according to the community-maintained Frostpunk Wiki’s Food reference. The appropriate route depends on what the scenario makes available, your research, workforce, and whether a source depends on an outpost or law.
- Secure a raw-food source. Choose an available route and staff or operate it as the scenario requires.
- Provide a Cookhouse. It converts raw food into Food Rations; the Cookhouse reference gives the conversion as 1 raw food to 2 rations.
- Watch both supply and demand. Check raw-food production and ration stock against your population and upcoming needs. Citizens who do not eat can progress through hungry and starving states, as described by the Food reference.
The available references list food routes but do not establish a single best production method or a universal per-person consumption rate. Compare the options your scenario actually offers rather than assuming one route always wins.

A practical check-in for changing conditions
Use this sequence when the weather shifts, the city grows, or supplies start to tighten:
- Check the temperature forecast and identify homes or workplaces at risk.
- Review coal against the current Generator level and range, plus active Steam Hubs and heaters.
- Increase heat where conditions require it; for grouped buildings, consider whether a shared heat zone makes sense.
- If using overdrive, monitor the stress meter instead of leaving it unattended.
- Check raw-food production, then confirm the Cookhouse can turn supply into Food Rations.
- Reassess after changes to temperature, population, research, laws, or scenario demands.
This is a decision loop, not a tested optimal build order. 11 bit studios describes Frostpunk as a society-survival game about ruling the last city on Earth; detailed mechanics and scenario tactics here come from community-maintained game references, not publisher-authored strategy guidance.
